109- Award-winning actress Kyra Sedgwick reads Velma Gratch and the Way Cool Butterfly for back-to-school at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation's Storyline Online®
LOS ANGELES (September 2023) -- Award-winning actress and director Kyra Sedgwick is helping to kick off the new school year by reading Alan Madison's brilliant children's story Velma Gratch and the Way Cool Butterfly for the SAG-AFTRA Foundation's free children's literacy program Storyline Online®. In this new read-aloud, Sedgwick inspires young ones to embrace their individuality while learning some scientific facts about metamorphosis and migration along the way!
•••• Winner of the School Library Journal's Best Book of the Year, Velma Gratch and the Way Cool Butterfly is all about finding your passion and embracing your heart's desire, even if it looks different than what is expected of you. That's true for Velma, who is the youngest Gratch and entering the first grade. Velma is constantly reminded of her two older sisters who were practically perfect first graders. People can barely remember Velma's name, but all that changes on a class trip to the magnificent Butterfly Conservatory (where neither of her sisters have ever been) when a monarch roosts on Velma's finger, and becomes her new, winged friend. It's a transformative tale of a timid first grader who gains confidence and self-esteem when she discovers her passion for nature and science.
•••• Published in 2010 by Penguin Random House, the story is brought to life with illustrations by Kevin Hawkes. And with back-to-school underway, SAG-AFTRA Foundation President Courtney B. Vance is excited to welcome Velma Gratch and the Way Cool Butterfly to the Storyline Online library this September.
•••• "We are thrilled to have Kyra Sedgwick join the Storyline Online family. She is the perfect reader for Velma Gratch and the Way Cool Butterfly as Kyra, much like our heroine Velma, marches to the beat of her own drum!" says Vance. "Velma Gratch and the Way Cool Butterfly is so vibrant in both its message and illustrations, while also teaching a very important lesson about finding one's passion and learning to celebrate and embrace the differences within one's own family, and most importantly, within yourself. We can't wait to let this story fly!"
•••• With hundreds of millions of views worldwide, Storyline Online has been a trusted educational brand and resource for teachers, librarians and parents since 2001. As with all Storyline Online read-alouds, Velma Gratch and the Way Cool Butterfly is accompanied by a complementary supplemental activity guide for teachers that aligns with Common Core Standards to strengthen verbal, written and comprehension skills. Velma Gratch and the Way Cool Butterfly includes themes of individuality, science, and sibling rivalry, and is aimed at students in 2nd and 3rd grades.
•••• Kyra Sedgwick joins the impressive cast of Storyline Online readers including Angela Bassett, Kristen Bell, Connie Britton, Keith Carradine, Terry Crews, Viola Davis, Rosario Dawson, Cynthia Erivo, Sutton Foster, Jennifer Garner, Allison Janney, John Lithgow, Simi Liu, Rami Malek, Seth Meyers, Bob Odenkirk, Holly Robinson Peete, Chris Pine, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Justin Theroux, Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Yeoh, and dozens more who have volunteered their time and talent to promote literacy and inspire a love of reading in hundreds of millions of children worldwide.
•••• To watch Velma Gratch and the Way Cool Butterfly and all of Storyline Online's read-alouds, visit storylineonline.net. Keep up with new videos by subscribing to Storyline Online on YouTube and following Storyline Online on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

SAG-AFTRA CONGRATULATES THE WGA ON REACHING A TENTATIVE AGREEMENT WITH THE AMPTP

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 24, 2023) -- SAG-AFTRA congratulates theWGA on reaching a tentative agreement with the AMPTP after 146 days of incredible strength, resiliency and solidarity on the picket lines. While we look forward to reviewing the WGA and AMPTP's tentative agreement, we remain committed to achieving the necessary terms for our members.

Since the day the WGA strike began, SAG-AFTRA members have stood alongside the writers on the picket lines. We remain on strike in our TV/Theatrical contract and continue to urge the studio and streamer CEOs and the AMPTP to return to the table and make the fair deal that our members deserve and demand.
///

SAG-AFTRA HEALTH PLAN BOARD OF TRUSTEES UNANIMOUSLY APPROVES EXTENSION OF ACTIVE COVERAGE TO QUALIFIED PARTICIPANTS

LOS ANGELES (August 30, 2023) -- The trustees of the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan have unanimously agreed to a one-calendar-quarter extension of health coverage for certain qualified participants who would otherwise lose coverage on Oct. 1, 2023. This extension accounts for work opportunities that may have been lost in May and June of this year due to the WGA strike.

Qualified participants must be losing earnings-based or days-based coverage on Oct. 1, 2023, and have at least $22,000 in reported earnings (or 85 alternative days) from July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023. These reduced requirements apply only to continuation of existing active coverage and reflect a reduction that accounts for lesser earnings opportunities during May and June.

"This will come as a great relief to our members," said SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher. "I think it's important that we never forget that we are in a contract negotiation with the AMPTP and under no circumstances should the health and well-being of members and their families ever be weaponized against them because of this strike. The AMPTP is long overdue to return to the negotiating table with a fresh perspective on their integral relationship with SAG-AFTRA members. The ball is in their court to do the right thing on behalf of performers and accept the inevitable paradigm shift with grace and generosity."

SAG-AFTRA's National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, who also serves as a trustee, said, "It's a shame the studios and streamers have put so many SAG-AFTRA members in a position where they have to worry about basic necessities -- like whether they will remain covered by their health plan. The Board of Trustees' approval of this extension to some of those impacted by the AMPTP's intransigence will help alleviate some of that anxiety. The solution we're all hoping for, however, is that the AMPTP will return to the bargaining table."

SAG-AFTRA health plan participants who lose active coverage but don't qualify for the extension will receive a COBRA offer from the Plan. COBRA premium payment assistance or other resources that can help members find affordable coverage may be available through their state or through one of the entertainment industry's charitable foundations.

The SAG-AFTRA Health Plan is governed independently of the union.
///

101- SAG-AFTRA Statement regarding DANCING WITH THE STARS
LOS ANGELES (Sept. 21, 2023) -- Our members appearing on Dancing with the Stars are working under the Network Code agreement, which is a non-struck contract. They are required to go to work, are not in violation of SAG-AFTRA strike rules, and we support them in fulfilling their contractual obligations.
•••• The program is a SAG-AFTRA non-dramatic production under a separate agreement that is not subject to the union's strike order.
••••The majority of our members on Dancing with the Stars had contractual obligations to the show prior to the strike. Many are under option agreements that require them to return to the show if the producer exercises their option which the producer has done.
••••Our members are also subject to a "No Strike Clause" in the Network Code Collective Bargaining Agreement. This means our performers agree not to strike during the term of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and to show up to work during this term (the Network Code runs through June 30, 2024.) By not showing up to work, our performers can be held in breach of contract and the Union is prohibited from advising them not to work.
••••It is important to recognize that SAG-AFTRA is fighting against the studios and not members who are required to go to work every day under other union contracts or personal service agreements. We stand with our union siblings across the industry as we also recognize our obligations under federal labor law.

•••• Despite Polanski being accused of sexual assault of a minor in 1977, his film "The Palace," set in in a Swiss Hotel on New Year's Eve, will be featured in the festival as well as Allen's film "Coup de Chance," a French thriller, is to premiere at the festival, regardless of being accused of sexual assault in 1992.
•••• The lineup for the 80th edition of the festival, which -- despite the flashy names behind the films -- could have a little less Hollywood glamour than usual gracing the red carpet if the Hollywood actors and writers strikes stretch on. As part of the strike, actors cannot promote projects from the studios and streamers with whom the union is negotiating.
•••• The prestigious film festival already lost one high-profile premiere to the labor disputes in the U.S. in Luca Guadagnino's tennis drama "Challengers," starring Zendaya, which had been set to play in the opening night slot but has now been pushed to 2024. But Alberto Barbera, the director of the Venice Film Festival, said that the strikes' effects on the festival lineup had otherwise been minimal.

115- Lorenzo Mattotti creates official poster for Venice Inter'l Film Festival - TVIMagazine
••• Italian illustrator and artist Lorenzo Mattotti is, for the sixth consecutive year, the author of the image for the official poster, and for the fifth year, of the opening sequence for the Venice International Film Festival of La Biennale di Venezia, this year in its 80th edition (August 30 - 9 September 2023).
•••• The image chosen for the poster this year "is inspired by the tradition of on the road movies," explains Lorenzo Mattotti, and in this way seeks to express feelings of freedom, adventure, the discovery of new territories. I played with the graphics - underscores the author - to represent new worlds that can be explored through Cinema.
•••• We are convinced that there is a great future for Cinema that looks forward and ventures down new paths. Furthermore, the Venice International Film Festival is celebrating its 80th edition this year and we wanted to commemorate that in the number that appears on the license plate of an imagined car. Naturally, many are the films that can be evoked by this image, such as Il sorpasso, Easy Rider or Thelma and Louise. May each of us find our own on the road movie. This is our wish for Cinema, may it go far and sprint towards the future. A future of exploration, in search of new frontiers: a colourful luminous Cinema".
•••• Lorenzo Mattotti lives and works in Paris. He began his career in the late 1970s as a comic artist and in the early 1980s founded the Valvoline group with other illustrators. In 1984 he created Fuochi, which was greeted as an event in the world of comic art, and won important international awards. In cinema, he collaborated in 2004 on Eros by Wong Kar-Wai, Soderbergh and Antonioni, and was responsible for the presentation segments of each episode. He was a creative consultant for Pinocchio by Enzo D'Alò. In Incidenti, Signor Spartaco, Doctor Nefasto, L'uomo alla finestra and many more books, all the way to Stigmate published in Italy by Einaudi, Mattotti's work has evolved following an extremely consistent constant.
••••His books have been translated around the world. He publishes in newspapers and magazines such as The New Yorker, Le Monde, Das Magazin, Suddeutsche Zeitung, Nouvel Observateur, Corriere della Sera and Repubblica. He has illustrated many books for children including Pinocchio and Eugenio, which won the Grand Prix in Bratislava in 1993. He has held many solo exhibitions including an anthological exhibition at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome, at the FransHals museum in Haarlem and at the Musei di Porta Romana. He creates posters, covers, advertising campaigns and is the author of the Cannes 2000 poster and the posters for the Estate Romana festival.
•••• In May 2019, he presented to great acclaim in the Un certain regard section of the Cannes Film Festival, his first animated feature-length film as author and director, titled "La famosa invasione degli orsi in Sicilia" (The Bears' Famous Invasion of Sicily) inspired by the fable/apologue by

Train Festival 2023 draws large crowds at Los Angeles Union Station
- By Gary Sunkin

•••• In partnership with Metrolosangeles, amtrak and Metrolink, Train Festival invited guests of all ages to check out rail equipment on the tracks from various decades since the opening of the station, marvel at the rarest of model train exhibits and participate in tours about the history, restoration and art throughout the building.
•••• Los Angeles Union Station is the largest railroad passenger terminal in the Western United States and is widely regarded as "the last of the great train stations." The Station was commissioned in 1933 as a joint venture between the Southern Pacific, Union Pacific, Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroads and was intended to consolidate the three local railroad terminals.
•••• The Station was designed by the father-and-son architect team of John and Donald Parkinson with an innovative blend of Spanish Colonial, Mission Revival and Art Deco architecture now commonly referred to as Mission Moderne. The stunning facility was completed in 1939 for a reported $11 million and opened with a lavish, star-studded, three-day celebration attended by a half million Angelenos.
•••• Within just a few years of opening, Union Station transformed into a bustling 24-hour, seven-day-a-week operation with as many as 100 troop trains carrying tens of thousands of servicemen through the terminal every day during World War II.
•••• By the 1950s Americans favored cars and planes to the rails, and there were fewer passengers throughout the Station, but it remained a vital part of LA's transportation scene for decades. Union Station was designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 101 in 1972 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places and California Register of Historical Resources in 1980.
|
••• In the eight-plus decades since its opening, Union Station has captured the spirit and soul of Los Angeles and has emerged as a vital portal to the promise of the California dream and a vibrant destination for arts and culture.

Aft Skirt Installation Will Be First Milestone toward Lifting Space Shuttle
Endeavour into Vertical Launch Position for New
Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center

LOS ANGELES, July 6, 2023 --The California Science Center will commence Go for Stack, the complex process of moving and lifting each of the space shuttle components into place for Endeavour's upcoming, awe-inspiring 20-story vertical display in the future Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, currently under construction. This technically challenging feat has never been done outside of a NASA facility. The installation of the two aft skirts, the base of the solid rocket boosters, will mark the first Go for Stack milestone and lay the foundation upon which the entire shuttle stack will be built. This is the first step in creating the world's only display of an authentic, 'ready-to-launch' space shuttle system; complete with the orbiter Endeavour, solid rocket boosters, and external tank.
•••• The roughly six-month Go for Stack process will start with the installation of the aft skirts, on top of which the solid rocket motors will be stacked to form the solid rocket boosters. This will be followed by the move and lift of the external tank, ET-94; then, Space Shuttle Endeavour's final move across Exposition Park and lift into place by a large crane; and finally, the intricate mating of the orbiter with the rest of the space shuttle stack. Once finished, Endeavour will be in a vertical configuration towering 200-feet tall. The Air and Space Center building will be completed around the full shuttle stack.
•••• After more than eleven years on display at the California Science Center, December 31, 2023 will be the last chance to see Endeavour on exhibit for several years until the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center opens to the public. While Endeavour is off exhibit, the California Science Center remains one of the largest science centers in the nation, with
multiple hands-on exhibit galleries, special exhibitions, and IMAX movies for guests to experience.
•••• "Endeavour will be the star attraction of the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, a launchpad for creativity and innovation that will inspire future generations of scientists, engineers and explorers," said Jeff Rudolph, President and CEO of the California Science Center. "We are grateful to be at this point in the construction of the new Air and Space Center, and thrilled to start Go for Stack on July 20 to commemorate Space Exploration Day."

NASA-KimShiflett

•••• With an impressive artifact collection integrated with hands-on exhibits, the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center will be a major expansion that will double the Science Center's educational exhibit space, adding 100,000 square feet and 100 new educational exhibits. Guests of all ages will be encouraged to investigate scientific and engineering principles of atmospheric flight and the exploration of the universe. The Air, Shuttle, and Space Galleries will provide a unique educational opportunity for our Los Angeles community and guests from around the world, general admission free. The Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center is the third phase of the California Science Center's three-phase, three-decade master plan to develop one of the world's leading science learning centers. Building construction is underway, and together with artifact and exhibit installation, is expected to take several years.
•••• The California Science Center Foundation is actively fundraising to complete this ambitious project with $320 million raised toward the $400 million EndeavourLA Campaign goal. Everyone can help realize this exciting vision and donations at any level are welcomed.

40 Years of Munich Filmfest: A Gift to the Audience - TVIMagazine
It's that time again: this evening, June 23, the 40th edition of FILMFEST MÜNCHEN held its opening gala in Munich. Some 1,500 guests from the arts, the film industry, and local government attended the ceremony at the Gasteig HP8 venue for concerts and cultural events.
•••• More than 20 members of the cast and crew of the opening film "The Persian Version" attended the opening gala at FILMFEST MÜNCHEN. Among them were director Maryam Keshavarz and lead actresses Layla Mohammadi and Niousha Noor.
•••• They presented a culture-clash comedy and cross-generational portrait that uses humor to dissolve boundaries and provide a positive outlook during moments of bitter reality. The film is a story about Leila and her Iranian parents, who immigrated to the United States in the 1960s. As she tries to figure out her identity, Leila is torn not only between her two parents as a child of divorce, but also between two opposing cultures. It is a balancing act that she learns to master. As an added touch, the film team put on its own playlist after the screening, bringing the exuberant mood of the film to Munich.
•••• The approximately 1,500 invited guests who celebrated the opening of the 40th FILMFEST MÜNCHEN together included such prominent figures from the arts scene as Rufus Beck, Veronica Ferres, Iris Berben and Dr. Maria Furtwängler, as well as many other film directors, actors, actresses, and producers from Germany and abroad, along with the distinguished members of the festival juries, including Doris Dörrie, Friedrich Mücke, and Sophie Linnenbaum, and prominent political figures, including Bavaria's minister of digital affairs, Judith Gerlach, and Munich's vice-mayor, Katrin Habenschaden.
•••• Diana Iljine took the opportunity at the opening of the 40th FILMFEST MÜNCHEN to thank her team: "We as a team are here to provide a platform for creative people. And we do that with so much affection and so meticulously. That's magnificent. I wish to thank everyone who has been working tirelessly behind the scenes for months to prepare this festival, this anniversary. Now let's celebrate it together!"
•••• Minister of Digital Affairs Judith Gerlach highlighted the exceptional standing that Munich and Bavaria have in the film industry: "Over the forty years of its existence, FILMFEST MÜNCHEN has developed into Germany's largest summertime movie festival. And that's not by chance. Munich is home to outstanding production companies and studios. Digital film specialists work here on Hollywood blockbusters. Munich is a capital of filmmaking. And FILMFEST MÜNCHEN is the glittering showcase of this marvelous German and Bavarian film industry."
•••• Vice-Mayor Katrin Habenschaden was particularly enthusiastic about the films from the African continent as well as the stimulating program of supporting events: "Despite having turned 40, FILMFEST MÜNCHEN has remained young and audacious. The program reflects this; it is particularly wide-ranging this year and includes a focus on Africa, one of the most fascinating regions for cinema. The associated panel discussions and places for meeting up are valuable assets to the Filmfest. This is where the arts reveal what they can do best, namely bring different people together to create a community. With this anniversary film festival, Diana Iljine is delivering an impressive farewell performance that will hopefully resonate well."
•••• Festival director Diana Iljine also thanked all the partners and award sponsors for their unwavering commitment to FILMFEST MÜNCHEN.
•••• For this year's anniversary edition, the Filmfest has dug into the archives and will be screening, free of charge, some of the highlights from the four decades of its existence, from well-known classics to best-kept secrets. Munich audiences loved the Oscar-nominated film "Beyond Silence" by Caroline Link when it was screened in 1996. The film tells the story of a young woman named Lara, the daughter of deaf parents, who searches for and finds her own way through life. "Born in Flames" by Lizzie Borden, "Beautiful Dead Girls" by Dalibor Matani? and Jakob Lass's "Love Steaks" are also waiting to be discovered. "Young Soul Rebels" by British director and video artist Sir Isaac Julien, who came to Munich in May as part of a collaboration with Museum Brandhorst, will be screened as well.

• 101- SAG-AFTRA waivers are questioned
•••• Actors are opposed to appear in movies amid the actors' and writers' labor strikes and come amid scrutiny over decisions to except some productions from the strike that are not affiliated with any major studios or streaming platforms and have sparked questions of lately.
•••• Although much of Hollywood has come to a standstill amid the strikes more than 40 productions have been granted waivers to continue shooting during the mass work stoppage. But whether actors are crossing a picket line by participating in those productions has become a point of contention in the industry.
•••• Under the terms of the waiver said projects are required to abide by the guidelines SAG-AFTRA has presented to the AMPTP in bargaining. The guild is fighting for higher wages, greater shares of revenue generated by streaming hits and limitations on the use of AI, among other benefits and protections. The exempt poductions must operate under these terms until the union and the AMPTP agree on and ratify a new contract.
•••• There is a questions as to whether all the exempt projects are truly independent. However, it seems all want a swift end to this strike and get back to work after having won crucial new benefits.

Time is ticking as the SAG-AFTRA contract is to expire June 30.
SAG-AFTRA leaders describe negotiation talks as productive
•••• Members of the Directors Guild of America voted to ratify their contract, which provides increases in residuals and minimums as well as gains on working hours, family leave and creative rights.
•••• The SAG-AFTRA contract is set to expire next Friday June 30, and there has been some talk that the negotiations might be extended if the sides are unable to reach agreement on all points by then.
•••• Union president Fran Drescher and chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland are optimistic saying they hope to be able to achieve a deal with the studios.
••••If they do, that would avert a "double strike," in which performers would join the Writers Guild of America on picket lines outside the major studios.
•••• SAG-AFTRA represents 160,000 performers. The union is seeking robust protections around the use of artificial intelligence (AI), as well as increases in residuals and regulations on self-taped auditions, among other issues.
••••The use of the word "strike" was avoided and made no mention was made of the strike authorization approved by 98% of the membership just before talks began on June 7.
••••The SAG-AFTRA strike authorization gives the leadership the power to call a strike beginning on July 1 if no contract has been reached.

101- SAG-AFTRA And AMPTP Agree to Media Blackout for 2023 Contract Negotiations
LOS ANGELES (June 7, 2023) -- Today, SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP began formal negotiations for a new contract, and with the agreement that neither organization will comment to the media about the negotiations during the process.
•••• SAG-AFTRA's current contract with the AMPTP expires on June 30, 2023.

Writers' strike: What's at stake and how it could disrupt Hollywood
LOS ANGELES (June 6, 2023) - Like writers, actors have argued that their compensation has been undercut by inflation and the shift to streaming, which pays less in residuals (fees for re-aired shows) than traditional broadcast models.
•••• Other contentious issues include artificial intelligence and the lack of regulations surrounding how actors' voices and images are used.
•••• Additionally, the union wants to bolster contributions to SAG-AFTRA's health and pension plans and curb the practice of self-taped auditions, a trend that accelerated during the pandemic.
•••• Studios and casting directors increasingly have required actors to submit video of themselves auditioning for roles, forcing them to take on audition costs that have typically been the responsibility of productions, the union has said.
•••• The last time actors went on strike was in 2000 in a dispute over their commercials contract.
•••• A previous actors' strike against the major film and TV studios was in 1980.

SAG-AFTRA Members Approve Strike Authorization with 97.91% Yes Vote
Results Set the Stage for TV/Theatrical Contracts Negotiations
- TVIMagazine
LOS ANGELES (June 5, 2023) -- In a powerful show of solidarity, SAG-AFTRA members have voted 97.91% in favor of a strike authorization ahead of negotiations of the TV/Theatrical Contracts, with nearly 65,000 members casting ballots for a voting percentage of 47.69% of eligible voters.
•••• The strike authorization does not mean the union is calling a strike. SAG-AFTRA begins negotiations on June 7 with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. The affirmative vote on the authorization empowers the union's National Board to initiate a strike if the AMPTP won't reach a fair deal with the union. The current SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical Contracts expire at midnight on June 30, 2023.
•••• "The strike authorization votes have been tabulated and the membership joined their elected leadership and negotiating committee in favor of strength and solidarity. I'm proud of all of you who voted as well as those who were vocally supportive, even if unable to vote. Everyone played a part in this achievement," said SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher. "Together we lock elbows and in unity we build a new contract that honors our contributions in this remarkable industry, reflects the new digital and streaming business model and brings ALL our concerns for protections and benefits into the now! Bravo SAG-AFTRA, we are in it to win it."
•••• "I could not be more pleased with this response from the membership. This overwhelming yes vote is a clear statement that it's time for an evolution in this contract. As we enter what may be one of the most consequential negotiations in the union's history, inflation, dwindling residuals due to streaming, and generative AI all threaten actors' ability to earn a livelihood if our contracts are not adapted to reflect the new realities. This strike authorization means we enter our negotiations from a position of strength, so that we can deliver the deal our members want and deserve," said SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland.

101-SAG-AFTRA National Board Unanimously Agrees to Send Strike Authorization Vote to Members
LOS ANGELES (May 17, 2023) -- In anticipation of the union's forthcoming TV/Theatrical Contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which begin June 7, the SAG-AFTRA National Board agreed unanimously to recommend that its members vote to authorize a strike. An affirmative vote does not mean a strike would necessarily happen, but it would allow the National Board to call one if deemed necessary during the negotiations process. The action comes following a unanimous agreement by the TV/Theatrical negotiating committee that the strike authorization would give the union maximum bargaining leverage as it enters this round of negotiations with the AMPTP. SAG-AFTRA represents more than 160,000 entertainment and media professionals.
•••• "For the first time in a very long time, our member leadership stands in solidarity at the negotiating committee and the National Board levels on moving forward with a strike authorization. We must get all our ducks in a row should the need present itself, said SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher. "The prospect of a strike is not a first option, but a last resort. As my dad always says, 'Better to have and not need than to need and not have!' Therefore, I implore eligible members to follow the leads of both the negotiating committee and the National Board with an unprecedented show of solidarity and make three a charm with an emphatic 'yes' for a strike authorization vote!"
•••• SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland explained, "Strike authorization sends an important message during the negotiations process. A 'yes' vote gives the National Board the power to call a strike if the AMPTP does not negotiate fairly in our upcoming bargaining. This will be a seminal negotiation that will determine the future of what it means to be a working performer. We must be ready to fight to secure a meaningful deal for our members."
•••• Earning a living as a professional performer has become increasingly difficult, with both inflation and the streaming ecosystem undercutting compensation -- all the while, corporate profits and executive pay at studios continue to rise. Add to this the unregulated use of artificial intelligence and the burdens of the industrywide shift to self-tape, the outlook for working actors becomes unsustainable without transformative change.
•••• A successful strike authorization vote doesn't initiate a strike. Instead, the strike authorization permits the National Board to declare a strike if the studios and streaming companies fail to negotiate fairly with SAG-AFTRA for the benefit of its members.
•••• Postcards will be sent to eligible members on Thursday, May 18 with instructions on how to vote, and voting will close at 5 p.m. PT on Monday, June 5.
•••• The current SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical Agreement expires at midnight on June 30, 2023.

•••• In 2008, the Metro Board of Directors included initial funding for the Regional Connector in the Measure R sales tax ballot measure, which was approved by L.A. County voters. The project was also funded by approximately $1 billion in federal grants and loans, as well as bonds from the state's high-speed rail project.
•••• The project includes three new underground stations and extends from the L Line (Gold) in Little Tokyo and Arts District communities to the A (Blue) and E (Expo) Lines at 7th Street/Metro Center Station. •••• The festival opened Wednesday evening with the North American premiere of "Kiss the Future," a documentary produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck about how artists and musicians formed an underground community of resistance during the siege of Sarajevo in the 1990s, and the 1997 U2 concert celebrating the liberation of the Bosnian capital.
•••• "We are grateful to the people of Sarajevo and to U2 for giving us the opportunity to help tell this special story," Damon said in a statement. "Though this event happened almost 30 years ago, we feel it has strong relevance to today's world, serving as a powerful reminder that human creativity can provide a powerful antidote to even the most horrific of situations."
•••• In a separate statement after the selection was announced, U2's Bono said, "We know U2's marquee is helpful in getting the lives of these local heroes to a wider audience, but even at my most puffed up I couldn't have imagined our tiny role being given so much care, attention and screen time by [director] Nenad Cicin-Sain. If defiance is the essence of romance, then the people of Sarajevo are the most romantic figures. Viva Sarajevo!"

• 115- Pasadena Playhouse will receive the 2023 Regional Theatre Tony Award

PasadenaPlayHouse400w.jpg

•••• The Pasadena Playhouse, the State Theatre of California, is only the second Los Angeles institution to earn the honor
•••• The prize, which includes a $25,000 grant, will be presented at the 76th Tony Awards on June 11 in New York.
•••• Since the Writers Guild of America agreed to not picket the event, thus allowing the televised broadcast to proceed in a revised form.
•••• The Mark Taper Forum, was the first L.A. theater to receive the Regional Theatre Tony in 1977. Additional Southern California recipients are the Old Globe in 1984, South Coast Repertory in 1988 and La Jolla Playhouse in 1993.
•••• The Pasadena Play House doesn't lack the experiences of various crisis. In 2010 it was close to shutting down when most of the staff was laid off and the rreminder of the season cancelle while filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Rescued by the generous donors, the theater was back when producing artistic director Danny Feldman was appointed to succeed long-term artistic director Sheldon Epps in 2016.
•••• Founded in 1917 by Gilmor Brown, a resourceful theater enthusiast, Pasadena Playhouse began as a community theater. Early success inspired more than a thousand community members to buy the land at 39 S. El Molino Ave., on which a state-of-the-art theater was planned. In 1925, the attractive Spanish Colonial Revival building, now included in the National Register of Historic Places, opened its doors
•••• Under Brown's leadership, the theater drew attention through its programming ambition
•••• In 1928, Brown formally established a school of theater arts, which quickly built a national reputation as young Hollywood hopefuls flocked from across the country to break into the movie industry. Notable alumni from the school's extensive history include Eve Arden, Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, Sally Struthers, Jo Anne Worley, Robert Preston, Mako, Raymond Burr and Jamie Farr.
•••• After Brown died in 1960, the Playhouse began to stall. The Taper's emergence in 1967 created a new cultural center of gravity and the rise of university drama departments eroded the Playhouse's enrollment. The Pasadena Playhouse finally went dark in 1969. But resurrection would not be denied even if it took almost two decades.
•••• By 1986, the theater, which had been purchased by the city of Pasadena, was back in business. The main stage was humming again.
••••The last few years brought an unexpected challenge with a once-in-a-century pandemic closing the Playhouse for 20 months. The challenges remain formidable, but the theater seems finally on secure footing.
•••• However, this year saw one of the biggest initiatives in its history launched -- the Sondheim Celebration, a six-month-long festival in honor of the Broadway lyricist and composer who died in 2021.
•••• Survival of the Pasadena Play Playhas has been touch-and-go but now brought a welcome prize, The Tony Award.

Memorial DayMemorialFlag380w.jpg

What we now refer to as Memorial Day began as Decoration Day just after the Civil War in 1868. It was established as a day to remember the war dead by decorating their graves with flowers. The North and The South originally observed Decoration Day on different days until the mid-20th century when the last Monday of the month was chosen to honor all Americans who died while serving in the military.

Fellow Americans, It's Gary Sinise here

G Sinise400wCr.jpgYou may know me from my roles in movies like Apollo 13 and The Green Mile or the CBS television series CSI NY -- but it was in 1994 and playing the role of Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump, that my life changed and inspired my enduring connection to our defenders, veterans, and first responders.

This year, I'm honored to again serve as an Honorary Grand Marshal for the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C.

The National Memorial Day Parade is an event like no other … and this year, the American Veterans Center is bringing it BACK in full force, with 5,000+ participants marching down Constitution Avenue before a crowd of 250,000+ in-person, as well as T.V. broadcast that reaches 100 million households around the country.

Fellow American, the National Memorial Day Parade is PRIMARILY FUNDED by private contributions, including from generous Americans like you. Will you help chip in today to help support the Parade with a gift of $25, $50, $75, $150, or more?

Support the National Memorial Day Parade

When the American Veterans Center first called me 18 years ago and invited me to the National Memorial Day Parade, I was honored to join the event to remember our fallen heroes.

The American Veterans Center revived the Parade in 2005 after it had been dormant for nearly 70 years. And this year, they're bringing the Parade back better than ever.

Every American should be proud that generations of our brave servicemen and servicewomen, from the last of our "Greatest Generation" heroes of World War II to our veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq, will get the public thanks for their service that they deserve this year.

But I know that the defenders and families of the fallen who will join me in the National Memorial Day Parade will be thinking of their friends and loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country -- the brave Americans we honor on Memorial Day.

Sadly, our country is losing hundreds of World War II veterans each day, so the mission of the National Memorial Day Parade is more important now than ever -- as this year's event may be the LAST opportunity for our WWII heroes to commemorate their friends who never came home.

Please make your most generous contribution of $25, $50, $75, $150, $250, $500, to support the National Memorial Day Parade and make it the tribute that our nation's heroes deserve.

Support the National Memorial Day Parade

The National Memorial Day Parade costs a fraction of other major public events to put on each year. In fact, the entire parade costs about as much as just THREE balloons in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade or TWO floats in the Rose Bowl Parade!

That means that every dollar that's contributed by a generous American like you makes a difference for this important event.

Your support of the American Veterans Center not only helps the Parade, but also supports great programs like:

• Recording hundreds of oral histories of veterans from World War II to today before we lose these stories forever.

• Holding our National Youth Summit which allows young students a chance to hear firsthand from veterans from WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.

• Producing veteran-focused T.V. documentaries and specials that remind Americans of the price of our freedom.

Please join me in support of the National Memorial Day Parade with a gift of $25, $50, $75, $150, $250, $500, or more right now.

But no matter how much you can give to this important cause, I want to ask something additional of you.

On Memorial Day -- this year and every year -- please join me in honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.

Come to the National Memorial Day Parade in D.C. Visit a local veterans' cemetery. Send a note to a family of the fallen. Or simply take a quiet moment to think about the men and women who gave their lives to defend OUR country.

I believe while we can never do enough to express our gratitude to our defenders, veterans, and first responders, we can always do a little more.

Fellow American, thank you for your support of America's heroes, and please -- if you're able, make a gift to help fund the National Memorial Day Parade right now.

Sincerely,

Gary Sinise
Honorary Grand Marshal

115- Michael Douglas to receive Honorary Palme d'or at the 76th Festival de Cannes
" It is always a breath of fresh air to be at Cannes, which has long provided a wonderful platform for bold creators, artistic audacities and excellence in storytelling. From my first time here in 1979 for "The China Syndrome" to my most recent premiere for "Behind the Candelabra" in 2013, the Festival has always reminded me that magic of cinema is not just in what we see onscreen but in its ability to impact people all around the world. After more than 50 years in the business, it's an honor to return to the Croisette to open the Festival and embrace our shared global language of film." Michael Douglas
••• 32nd Festival de Cannes, time to walk up those red carpet Steps. Michael Douglas arrived for the first time on the Croisette. He was with actors Jane Fonda and Jack Lemmon, as well as director James Bridges for the presentation of "The China Syndrome." Thirteen years later, in 1992, the sulphurous "Basic Instinct," by Paul Verhoeven was presented in Competition. Shaking up the thriller genre, the film was the talk of the Croisette: it propelled Sharon Stone to the rank of international icon and confirmed the power of Michael Douglas' talent. In 1993, Joel Schumacher's Falling Down was presented in Competition, for the American actor's third participation at the Festival.

••• Michael Douglas will receive the Palme d'or d'honneur at the 76th Festival de Cannes, in recognition of his brilliant career as well as his engagement for cinema. The Festival de Cannes will pay a tribute to him during the Opening Ceremony broadcasted live on France 2 and internationally on ••• Brut. Tuesday, May 16.
•••• He reappeared on the Steps only 20 years later, with "Behind the Candelabra" by Steven Soderbergh. Transformed, moving and at the apex of his art, Michael Douglas played the famous singer and pianist Liberace. But his history with the Festival de Cannes began long before all this, through his father, Kirk Douglas, a lover of France and its cinema. The latter had marked the history of the Festival by presiding over the Jury in 1980. With the strength of his conviction and his character, he awarded the Palme d'Or to Akira Kurosawa and to Bob Fosse for "Kagemusha and All That Jazz."
•••• Michael Douglas has inherited his father's love for motion pictures, the kind of love that gives faith in the power of a film and spurs the desire to defend it body and soul. "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" by Milo Forman is proof of this; it is his first production in collaboration with Saul Zaentz and it gave him 9 Oscar nominations and the film was awarded Best Picture in 1975.
•••• Michael Douglas has worked as an actor with the greatest in the industry, such as Robert Zemeckis in "Romancing the Stone" (1984), Ridley Scott in "Black Rain" (1989) or Barry Levinson in "Disclosure" (1994). With Oliver Stone, he won the Oscar for Best Actor in 1987 for his portrayal of Gordon Gekko, a greedy New York broker in "Wall Street." The sequel, "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" was screened Out of Competition at the 63rd Festival de Cannes.
•••• In addition to his valuable contribution to cinema, Michael Douglas advocates multiple causes. In his capacity as a United Nations Messenger of Peace, he has been committed to nuclear disarmament across the world since 1998 and he has also been a longstanding advocate of gun control in the United States.
•••• To complete the tribute to Michael Douglas, a previously unreleased documentary by Amine Mestari, produced by Folamour with the support of Ciné+ and soon to be broadcast on Arte, will be shown on the Festival site for two days, from Sunday May 14 at 6pm to Tuesday May 16 at 6pm.
•••• This special documentary MICHAEL DOUGLAS, THE PRODIGAL SON shows how Michael, an actor and producer like his father Kirk, had to embrace their resemblance throughout his remarkable career in order to assert his difference. The time to learn how to become Michael when your name is Douglas.

WGA negotiations fail - Writers Guild strike begins
•••• The board of directors of the East and West Coast division of the WGA voted unanimously to call a strike effective 12.01 a.m. Tuesday, May 2.
•••• Thousands of members were to walk picket lines after the union was unable to reach a last-minute agreement with the major studios on a new three-year contract to replace the one expiring Monday night.
•••• The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers said it offered "generous increases in compensation for writers as well as improvements in streaming residuals."
••• Writers are seeking a larger slice of the pie as steaming has dramatically transformed the television business. They voted by a historic margin of 98% to 2% in favor to grant strike authorization sought by their leaders if the couldn't reach a deal on a new film and TV contract on behalf of 11,500 members.
••• The walkout which could last for weeks or even months, is expected to put a halt to much of TV and film prodction nationwide.

102- BuzzFeed News shutting down as company cuts staff
-
(Television Int'l Magazine)
NEW YORK - April 20, 2023 -- BuzzFeed News, which won a Pulitzer Prize for its reporting in 2021, is shutting down, due to economic challenges facing digital media companies attempting to deliver serious journalism.
•••• A memo from BuzzFeed chief Jonah Peretti announced the closure Thursday in a staff memo, which also said the New York-based company is cutting 15% of its staff.
•••• "While layoffs are occurring across nearly every division, we've determined that the company can no longer continue to fund BuzzFeed News as a standalone organization," Peretti said.
•••• BuzzFeed News, which once had as many as 250 employees, has undergone significant staff reductions in recent years, shrinking to a team of about 50.
•••• It used to be worth $1.6 billion; no it's down to $100 million.
•••• BuzzFeed was founded in 2006 and its news division launched in 2012. It was among the early successful online-only media sites, continuing a model established by Huffington Post, which BuzzFeed would later acquire.
•••• BuzzFeed, similard to other online news sites, has been hit by a deceleration in the advertising business amid greater economic challenges. With drops in advertising revenue, such companies have found themselves unable to support big staffs. Mass layoffs seem to have become so normal.
•••• Online news sites have also suffered because major social media companies, including Facebook, changed their algorithms, giving less focus to news publishers. Facebook's thinking is that its users would prefer to consume articles shared by friends. In addition, Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter has made that site less hospitable to news publishers.
••• NPR and PBS stopped using Twitte after receiving ''government funded' media label.
•••• Late last week, Twitter labeled the radio broadcaster as a "state-affiliated media" organization akin to foreign propaganda outlets such as Russia's RT and Sputnik. The move was quickly rebuked by NPR, which is publicly funded by listeners. NPR CEO John Lansing called the label "unacceptable." Twitter over the weekend updated the label to "government-funded media."
•••• BuzzFeed News earned a Pulitzer Prize in 2021 for an investigative series exposing China's mass detention of Muslims.
•••• The outlet also won two prestigious George Polk Awards, including for reporting how Facebook facilitated, then failed to control, disinformation spreading through its users' accounts, leading to violence.
•••• The division was also known for publishing an infamous dossier containing unflattering information about former President Trump in 2017.
•••• BuzzFeed's content was aimed at a younger demographic of digital natives who embraced the company's stories designed to get traction on social media.

•••• The leadership of the Writers Guild of America is asking its 11,500 members to authorize a strike should they fail to reach an agreement on a new contract with the studios. The guild's negotiators cited a lack of progress in contract talks that began last month.

101- SAG-AFTRA Acquires Commercial Office Property in North Hollywood, California - Site to Be Future Home to the Union's National Headquarters
LOS ANGELES, (APRIL 11, 2023) - SAG-AFTRA, the nation's largest entertainment industry union, recently closed a deal for the purchase of an existing commercial office building and nearby vacant lot in North Hollywood, California.
•••• The property features more than 118,000 square feet of commercial office space and is 100 percent leased with two anchor tenants -- Pilgrim Media Group and Screen Engine/ASI. In total, the purchase includes the building on 1.22 acres and a nearby 0.71-acre vacant lot that provides a significant development opportunity for future office space, event facilities or additional leasable square footage.
•••• SAG-AFTRA was represented by Arlene Sommer of Cushman & Wakefield in the $46.6 million acquisition from former owner Dr. David Lee of Jamison Properties.
•••• SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher said, "As National President, I began to investigate ways to diversify our investment portfolio and was surprised to learn we were the only entertainment industry union to not own our own headquarters versus paying large rents. After multiple sessions with my ED Duncan Crabtree-Ireland and CFO Arianna Ozzanto, it was determined that SAG-AFTRA was now in a financially sound position to pursue this goal. National Secretary-Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair Joely Fisher next took the lead in pursuit of a worthwhile real estate investment. She has dreamed of this day for years and showed great determination to complete the legacy that her mother, former Secretary-Treasurer, Connie Stevens began decades ago. Many thanks to this collaborative effort for bringing our union into this new chapter of ownership!"
•••• "This is a historic milestone for our union and a testament to our strength and resilience. The new building will provide us more space, better facilities, and greater opportunities to serve our members and advance our mission. By owning instead of renting, we will save money in the long run, build equity, and have more flexibility and stability. It also reflects our commitment to innovation and sustainability. I particularly want to thank Arianna Ozzanto, our extraordinary Chief Financial Officer, along with our dedicated member leaders, especially President Drescher, Executive VP Ben Whitehair, and Secretary-Treasurer Joely Fisher, for their dedication to moving this important project to fruition. We look forward to moving into our new home in a few years and continuing to make SAG-AFTRA the best union in the world for the professionals who work in front of the camera or behind a microphone," said National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland.
•••• Located in the heart of the Los Angeles "Media Triangle," the site is in close proximity to major studios and production facilities, including Netflix, Universal, Nickelodeon and Warner Bros. The property is conveniently located near major transportation arteries, including the 101 and 170 freeways and the Metro Orange Line.

102- These Countries spend the most time online
•••• Undoubtedly, we spend a significant portion of our day online. But just how much?
•••• According to data presented by the Atlas VPN team, the average time spent browsing the internet in 2022 was 397 minutes (6 hours and 37 minutes) per day. It equates to an astonishing 2,415 hours yearly, or nearly 30% of our time.
•••• However, there is some good news as daily online time actually decreased by 4.8% or 20 minutes compared to 2021 as we gradually moved past the pandemic.
•••• These figures are derived from data provided by Meltwater, and We Are Social. The data looks at internet usage trends worldwide among internet users aged 16 to 64.
•••• The time spent online varies significantly from country to country. South Africans are the most internet-addicted, with an average of 578 minutes (9 hours and 38 minutes) spent online each day, three hours more than the global average.

115- Berlin Film Festival reveals addictions to politics
Climate activists glue themselves to Berlinale's red carpet
BERLIN, Feb 16 -- The 73rd Berlin International Film Festival is in full swing and kicked off with GoldenBearBerlinale200.jpegpolitics, one cinematic low and a memorable high.
•••• A man and a woman glued themselves to the red carpet at the opening of Berlin's film festival on Thursday, calling on the German government and society to take more action to fight climate change.
•••The two activists glued themselves to the carpet after the arrival of film stars at the Berlinale Palast for the festival's opening ceremony, featuring a video address by Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and the premier of "She Came To Me", directed by U.S. director Rebecca Miller.
•••• The Last Generation group, which was behind the protest, said the current government and society are the last ones left with a chance of preventing the course to a climate hell with billions of deaths.
•••• "Advertising for sustainability on a small scale, like the Berlinale does, is important, but it will not save us on its own. We need to turn things around now," Raphael Voellmy, one of the activists, said in a statement.
•••• "If we continue escaping from reality, we will tear the first climate tipping points and unleash a deadly avalanche from which there is no escape," Lisa Winkelmann, the other activist, said.
•••• The protest did not interrupt the festival's opening ceremony.

Let's start with the politics...The topic was discussed during the opening jury press conference.

•••• The festival has never been shy about its political leanings and how engaged it is with current events. This 73rd festival was all about that from the get-go. It's no surprise, as Russia's war on Ukraine continues to rage on and Iranian citizens continue to be imprisoned and executed by a regime determined to destroy human rights and freedom of speech.
•••• The Berlinale has already announced a series of special events planned, including panel discussions and red-carpet protests in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and Iran. Artistic director Carlo Chatrian said the Berlinale would be a celebration of the "catalysing and revolutionary notion of cinema which unites even when it divides."
•••• Very early on, jury president Kristen Stewart - at 32 the youngest president in the festival's history - made some interesting remarks on the fact that we are currently living "in the most reactive, emotionally whiplashed time" and how the job of an artist is "to take a disgusting and ugly thing and transmute it, put it through your body and pop out something more beautiful and more helpful."
•••• Iranian-French actress Golshifteh Farahani, a co-juror, spoke about the symbolism of being in Berlin, especially in the context of what is happening in Iran.
•••• "It's very symbolic to be in Berlin, a city that broke the wall towards equality, freedom and brought so many people together. This year with Ukraine, Iran and the earthquake, it feels like the whole world is disintegrating - especially now with Iran," said Farahani.
•••• "In a country that is a dictatorship like Iran, art is not only an intellectual, philosophical thing - it's essential, it's like oxygen. Your existence by being an artist is put into danger. That's why it's so amazing to be here this year. Art and culture is a fire - we can all gather together and warm ourselves up. I'm really happy to be here to fight for freedom, in Iran and in the world," said the actress. The applause was immediate.
••••Echoing her comments, Hong Kong director Johnnie To (A Hero Never Dies, Election) spoke about the role of cinema as a tool to counter oppressive regimes.
Come the opening ceremony later that evening, Stewart and Farahani doubled down at the Berlinale Palast theatre.
••••"There are a lot of oppressions against our physical selves. I'm a girl, but I'm probably the least marginal version of a woman I can be," said Stewart.
••••As for Farahani, said stated with regards to the Iranian regime that it "lies and executes."
••••"The prisons of Iran are full of innocent people," she said. "We need you to stand on the right side of history with the Iranian people. This regime will fall."
••••"The wall of dictatorship is a thick wall. The revolution in South Africa took 800 days, ours has been just five months. This wall is one of oppression, attacking human rights. We need all of you. We need Germany, France, Europe. We need you to stand on the right side and to acknowledge it. Call it a revolution," she said.
••••To cap things off, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as has become his habit during major cultural ceremonies, appeared via satellite to introduce Sean Penn to the stage.
••••Seann Penn is currently in Berlin for his documentary Superpower, which features Penn's travels to Kyiv, his meetings with Zelenskyy, and focuses on the resilience of the Ukrainian people.
••••"A logical question comes up: On which side should culture and art be?" asked Zelenskyy. "Can art be outside of politics? Should cinema be outside of politics?"

•••• Should sports be outside politics? asks this writer.

••••Zelenskyy thanked the Berlinale for electing to ban creatives with ties to Russia, before concluding that "culture and cinema can be outside of politics, but not when it's a policy of aggression, mass crimes, murder and terrorism."
••••He added that the festival was "the showcase of the free world."

102-YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki announces plan to stepp down
MOUNTAINVIEW, Feb. 16, 2023 -- CEO Susan Wojcicki said that she's stepping down. Neal Mohan, chief product officer, will take the lead as the senior vice president and new head of YouTube.
•••• "Today, after nearly 25 years here, I've decided to step back from my role as the head of YouTube and start a new chapter focused on my family, health, and personal projects I'm passionate about," she said in a blog post.
•••• Wojcicki, 54, joined YouTube as CEO in 2014.
•••• She will continue working with YouTube teams, coaching members and meeting with creators, she added.
•••• Wojcicki said she agreed with Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai to, in the longer term, take on an advisory role across Google and Alphabet. "This will allow me to call on my different experiences over the years to offer counsel and guidance across Google and the portfolio of Alphabet companies," she wrote.
•••• "The time is right for me, and I feel able to do this because we have an incredible leadership team in place at YouTube," she noted. "When I joined YouTube nine years ago, one of my first priorities was bringing in an incredible leadership team."
•••• Wojcicki has long-held ties to Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who she let work out of her Menlo Park, California, home upon founding Google. Page and Brin rented the garage space for $1,700 a month from her. At the time Wojcicki was working in the marketing department at Intel.
•••• In 2006, she advocated for the $1.65 billion acquisition of YouTube.
•••• Wojcicki joined Google in 1999 and oversaw the design and build of Google's advertising and analytics products for 14 years. In recent years, YouTube has expanded its physical footprint in areas like New York and near its headquarters in San Bruno, California.
•••• During her tenure, she oversaw the company's rapid expansion to become the largest video platform in the world. YouTube now has more than 2.5 billion monthly active users and more than 500 hours of content are uploaded to the platform every minute, the company has said.
•••• The rapid growth became a challenge for the company to contain. Google and YouTube had to pay $170 million in 2019 to settle a case where the video platform allegedly violated children's privacy laws. Wojcicki also came under fire during the 2020 elections and the Covid-19 pandemic as the platform struggled to contain misinformation and disinformation campaigns.
•••• Wojcicki's blog post said she spent nearly 15 years of her career working with Mohan, the new head of YouTube, "first when he came over to Google with the DoubleClick acquisition in 2007 and as his role grew to become SVP of Display and Video Ads."
•••• YouTube has faced pressure in recent years amid a rise in popularity of social media, namely TikTok, which it has been trying to compete with through its short-form video platform Shorts. YouTube booked $7.96 billion in advertising revenue during the fourth quarter, which fell short of analyst expectations and was down 8% from the year prior.

101- The Chiefs prevailed in Super Bowl LVII
GLENDALE, Ariz -- Kansas City Chiefs scored 38-35 vs. Philadelphia Eagles to win Super Bowl LVII, and become NFL champs for second time in four years.
•••• Patrick Mahomes, The Kansas City quarterback, who hobbled into the halftime locker room wincing in pain, emerged a hero in the second half, hoisting the Chiefs out of a 10-point hole and leading them to a 38-35 victory over the mighty Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII at State Farm Stadium.
•••• Rihanna made her long-awaited return to the stage -- on the biggest stage in all of pop music -- backed by an expansive cast of dancers with with her half-time performance at Super Sunday.
••• She opened the show on a suspended platform high above the field at State Farm Stadium with the throbbing rap track "Bitch Better Have My Money" before segueing into a series of her uptemp EDM cuts "Where Have You Been," "Only Girl (In the World)" and "We Found Love." ••••

•••• The Super Bowl is the annual final playoff game of the National Football League (NFL) to determine the league champion. It has served as the final game of every NFL season since 1966, replacing the NFL Championship Game. Since 2022, the game is played on the second Sunday in February. Prior Super Bowls were played on Sundays in early to mid-January from 1967 to 1978, late January from 1979 to 2003, and the first Sunday of February from 2004 to 2021. Winning teams are awarded the Vince Lombardi Trophy, named for the coach of the Green Bay Packers who won the first two Super Bowls. Due to the NFL restricting use of its "Super Bowl" trademark, it is frequently referred to as the "big game" or other generic terms by non-sponsoring corporations. The day the game is played is often referred to as "Super Bowl Sunday" or simply "Super Sunday."
•••• The game was created as part of a 1966 merger agreement between the NFL and the competing American Football League (AFL) to have their best teams compete for a championship. It was originally called the AFL--NFL World Championship Game until the "Super Bowl" moniker was adopted in 1969's Super Bowl III. The first four Super Bowls from 1967 to 1970 were played before the merger, with the NFL and AFL each winning two. After the merger in 1970, the 10 AFL teams and three NFL teams formed the American Football Conference (AFC), while the remaining 13 NFL teams formed the National Football Conference (NFC). All games since 1971's Super Bowl V have been played between the winners of each conference's championship game.

101- Gustavo Dudamel Takes Baton To New York Philharmonic
LOS ANGELES, Feb 7 - Gustavo Dudamel, the longtime Music and Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is heading east: He's leaving L.A. to take the baton of the New York Philharmonic when his current contract ends in 2026, dealing a blow to the music world of Los Angeles
••• It's a big loss for LA fans that welcomed him to LA with a 10-minute standing ovation at his inaugural concert. Dudamel has become one of the most respected and sought after conductors in the world.
••• Known for his kinetic energy and bouncing curly hair, Dudamel has led the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 2009. He was hired by Deborah Borda, who is now the president of the New York Philharmonic.
••• New York Philharmonic officials made the announcement: Dudamel will become the Orchestra's next Music Director, beginning in the 2026-27 season, and will hold the title of Music and Artistic Director of the New York Philharmonic for a five-year term. Prior to that term, he'll serve as Music Director Designate during the 2025-26 season.
••• With Dudamel at the helm, the New York Times called the LA Phil "the most important orchestra in America - period."
••• Dudamel made his New York Philharmonic debut in November 2007, conducting works by Dvorák and Prokofiev as well as the Orchestra's first performances of Chávez's Sinfonia India (Symphony No. 2) since Leonard Bernstein led the piece in 1961.
••• In addition to his tenure in L.A., Dudamel has been Music Director of the Opéra National de Paris since 2021, and Music Director of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela since 1999. Dudamel, 42, has conducted 26 concerts of the NY Phil and made his debut there at just 26 years of age.•••
•••
Coming to Los Angeles at 27, Dudamel worked to bring new audiences to classical music at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl, promote music from the Americas and engage with contemporary composers and musicians.
•• As the most famous product of Venezuela's acclaimed network of music schools known as El Sistema, he also started a youth orchestra known as YOLA in 2007, providing 1,500 young people with free instruments and instruction.
••• LA Phil's chief executive officer, Chad Smith, congratulated Dudamel and said he "has left indelible marks on classical music, the LA Phil and Los Angeles."
••• Smith said Dudamel programmed some of the most ambitious works ever staged, inspired the orchestra to reach new levels of artistry, expanded the limits of Walt Disney Concert Hall, and demonstrated the power of music to change people's lives through YOLA.
••• "I am grateful to the musicians and leadership of the New York Philharmonic as we embark upon this new and beautiful journey together," Dudamel said on Tuesday. "As the great poet Federico García Lorca said: 'Every step we take on earth brings us to a new world.'"

115- Beyoncé breaks record for most Grammy wins ever
•••• The main ceremony was hosted by Trevor Noah in Los Angeles from Crypto.com Arena and broadcast on CBS while streaming on Paramount+ and Grammys.com.
•••• Beyoncé's career triumph came in the wake of her 2022 album "Renaissance." With her wins for R&B song, traditional R&B performance, dance/electronic recording and dance/electronic album, Beyoncé has broken the record for most lifetime Grammy wins and is now the most-awarded artist in Grammys history.
•••• Harry Styles took home album of the year, an honor most music critic thought Beyoncé should win, while Lizzo won record of the year, Bonnie Raitt won song of the year and Samara Joy was named best new artist.
••••With a leading nine nominations this year brought Beyoncé even with her husband, Jay-Z, for the most nods (88) of all time.
•••• Beyoncé entered the night with 28 Grammys, tied with producer and musician Quincy Jones and trailing only classical conductor Georg Solti, who won 31.
•••• The honor of winning best album of the year was thought by many music critics and fans Beyoncé should win. The formula for success in album of the year, which despite the fragmentation brought on by digital streaming is still the Grammys' equivalent of best picture, has always been a shifting mixture of commercial might, critical acclaim and cultural impact.
•••• This week, Beyoncé announced dates for her "Renaissance" stadium tour, which hits Inglewood's SoFi Stadium on Sept. 2-3.

115- Indie Films at Crossroad
••• When the Sundance Film Festival last came to Park City, it was before COVID-19 drastically affected millions of lives, yes. But also before the entertainment industry ecosystem of which the festival is a part was wildly upended.
•••• In general there is an indication of tough times for indie movies. The unpredictable COVID-19 situation is only part of the blame. Producers and studios are reckoning with long-term trends in audience behavior that were amplified by the pandemic. Moviegoers over 35 -- the prime demographic for festival selections -- are the most reluctant group to return to theaters, especially older women, according to industry data.
•••• In addition to halting the in-person version of the annual Utah conclave in 2021 and 2022, after all, the pandemic caused theatrical filmgoing to cease altogether for a time. And audiences for the arthouse movies that are the festival's lifeblood have been slow to return to cinemas in the years since.
•••• "It kind of sets the tone for the year," said Joana Vicente, CEO of Sundance Institute, citing the festival's traditional January date and penchant for identifying and incubating emerging talent. "It's this opportunity to spotlight all of the amazing new voices, new films that the team is excited about. And we put them out there and it's like we are setting culture. We are really creating the conversation."
•••• "Sundance is a place where we convene so many different groups of people," said Kim Yutani, the festival's director of programming. "It's filmmakers, of course, but then it's also press, it's industry, it's people who just love independent cinema. And to be able to create a program full of new films, in some cases by people who are not household names, to be able to put them into a program and to launch these films with this kind of nexus of constituents, to me that feels like a privilege."
•••• In recent years, streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+ have paid outsized sums of money for titles, only for their nontraditional release strategies and unpredictable algorithms to seem to soften their impact. Meanwhile, distributors with a stronger investment in theatrical exhibition, such as Sony Pictures Classics, Roadside Attractions, Focus Features, Searchlight Pictures, Magnolia Pictures and IFC Films -- all strong presences at Sundance before the streaming services -- were forced to compete with unprecedentedly deep pockets.
•••• Now, as the streamers trim the fat for a shifting economy and the more established players face an uncertain theatrical landscape, most everyone is trying to figuer over what the new normal might be, or even how to define success.
•••• The industry's approach to the festival changes with the times as surely as the topics covered by the films in the festival, which this year includes movies about the immigrant experience, the war in Ukraine and a host of other hot-button issues.
•••• "We change our business model constantly because the business changes constantly," said Tom Bernard, co-president of Sony Pictures Classics, which at last year's festival picked up "Living," starring Bill Nighy, then released it in conjunction with an awards campaign for the lead actor.
•••• "The streamers are going to sort of collide. How many [services] can you subscribe to?" said Bernard. "I think that you're going to have a new version of a cable package, only it's going to be your streamer package. Eventually when the fear of COVID is totaly over, the audience will be back."

115-Sundance- Is streaming the new hope for indie films?
PARK CITY, Utah - The Sundance Film Festival is under way since January 20 in a virtual format as the in-person event was cancelled January 5, amid a surge in COVID-19 cases in the state brought on by the omicron variant. Accordingly, the Sundance Film Festival's action is a responsible, community-focused measure in response to the current infection rates in our communities.
•••• Viewers have become used to being able to see a movie at home as soon as it hits theaters, or shortly after, as studios experiment with new distribution models. Many former moviegoers say they don't think they'll go back to theaters. Most living room TVs and sound systems don't replicate the movie house experience, but for many, they're good enough. However, for the little art-house films that dominate the scene at Sundance, the theatrical model seems no longer viable.
•••• At last year's Sundance, Apple paid $25 million for "CODA," a small and heartwarming drama about a teenage girl with a deaf family, for its streaming service Apple TV+. Disney-owned Searchlight Pictures and Hulu paid $12 million for Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson's music documentary "Summer of Soul." Those trends aren't going away soon.
•••• The streamers' ability to spend makes it difficult for traditional specialty distributors to compete for the top titles. Those companies for long have used the promise of a big-screen campaign as a bargaining chip with filmmakers.
•••• According to distribution chiefs a movie with a robust theatrical release can be more profitable and have longer-term cultural resonance than a streaming release. They make money not just at theaters but later through video on-demand and by selling to pay-cable channels and streaming services.
•••• Going forward, you're going to have to look at these films as being produced for the streaming market. That's the only market for them.
•••• This year's Sundance has the hallmarks of another seller's market, given the scarcity of available films and the proliferation of deep-pocketed buyers creating the expectation of bidding wars and eye-popping price tags, despite the lack of standing ovations and glitzy socializing typical of the non-virtual Sundances. •••• More than 80 feature-length films are screening during the Sundance program. Nearly 75% of the pictures showing at the festival did not have a distributor as of Thursday.
•• Streamers are buying up the bigger titles and there's going to be a level of competition this year not seen before."

106- SAG-AFTRA Statement on Rust Charges
LOS ANGLES, CA - Jan. 19, 2023 - SAG-AFTRA released the following statement on news regarding charges in the Rust tragedy.
•••• " The death of Halyna Hutchins is a tragedy, and all the more so because of its preventable nature. It is not a failure of duty or a criminal act on the part of any performer.
••••"The prosecutor's contention that an actor has a duty to ensure the functional and mechanical operation of a firearm on a production set is wrong and uninformed. An actor's job is not to be a firearms or weapons expert. Firearms are provided for their use under the guidance of multiple expert professionals directly responsible for the safe and accurate operation of that firearm.  In addition, the employer is always responsible for providing a safe work environment at all times, including hiring and supervising the work of professionals trained in weapons.
••••"The Industry Standards for safety with firearms and use of blank ammunition are clearly laid out in Safety Bulletin 1, provided by the Joint Industry-Wide Labor Management Safety Commission. The guidelines require an experienced, qualified armorer to be put in charge of all handling, use, and safekeeping of firearms on set. These duties include "inspecting the firearm and barrel before and after every firing sequence," and "checking all firearms before each use."
••••"The guidelines do not make it the performer's responsibility to check any firearm. Performers train to perform, and they are not required or expected to be experts on guns or experienced in their use. The industry assigns that responsibility to qualified professionals who oversee their use and handling in every aspect.  Anyone issued a firearm on set must be given training and guidance in its safe handlin g and use, but all activity with firearms on a set must be under the careful supervision and control of the professional armorer and the employer."

SAG-AFTRA represents approximately 160,000 actors, announcers, broadcast journalists, dancers, DJs, news writers, news editors, program hosts, puppeteers, recording artists, singers, stunt performers, voiceover artists, influencers and other entertainment and media professionals. 101- Georgia Bulldogs beat T.C.U., 65-7, at Sofi Stadium - By Gary Sunkin

GeorgiaBulldogsNatl.jpg

•••• Texax Christian became the conference's unlikey hero this season as it soared to 13 wins, including one in the semifinal over Michigan, by coming the first Big 12 team to win a game in the plaoff format. TCU was facing Georgia in the final -- a college football juggernaut -- but seemed to perhaps have a chance with a unique defensive style, a Heisman finalist quartrack and one of the best receivers in the nation.
•••• T.C.U. uncharacteristically, was not the resilient team it had been all yar. The Horned Frogs had won five games in comeback fashion, often down double digits, but on Monday night seemed to lay down as Georgia ran up the score.
••• On Moday night, on the biggest stage in one of the biggest games for the Big 12 in recent memory, T.C.U suffered arguably the most embarrassing defeat in College Football Playfoff history, losing, 65-7 in a game that was mostly not competitive.

115-FILMFEST MÜNCHEN announces collaboration with EURO CINE EXPO
•••• Euro Cine Expo announce an exciting collaboration with FILMFEST MÜNCHEN, Germany's largest summer film festival, and Film Commission Bayern, the first information and contact point for national and international production companies.
•••• The partnership aims to strengthen and enhance both events and the production site Bavaria, attracting and boosting common industry delegates, internationally and nationally, whilst increasing visibility and awareness.
•••• Euro Cine Expo and FILMFEST MÜNCHEN will work together to ensure that access to both events is covered by one ticket, with easy transport options between the venues to maximise ease of access to both events.
•••• This year's Euro Cine Expo welcomed over 100 exhibitors and almost 2000 visitors from around the world, and delivered an international platform for the film, TV and cinematography industry, including an exhibition and seminar programme, and next year's event will be further enhanced with a larger exhibition area and an updated flow through the hall spaces.
•••• FILMFEST MÜNCHEN is also a major event for representatives of the film industry, who come together to exchange ideas and initiate new projects. This is the place to explore the whole spectrum of contemporary global cinema, from independent gems to star-studded German and international films.
•••• The Film Commission Bayern, as a department of FFF Bayern, the regional film funding, is the first information and contact source for national and international production companies, presents Bavaria as a production and shooting location at international festival markets and trade fairs and and aims to ensure optimal filming conditions.
••• Taking place at the Motorworld complex from June 30th - July 1st, Euro Cine Expo 2023 will offer the cinematography industry an unrivalled opportunity to showcase its brands and network in person as business continues to rebound from the pandemic. The event will deliver a festival feel for attendees with on-site restaurants, food trucks, and areas to socialise.
••• Claire Saunders, event director commented: "We look forward to creating a partnership which will promote mutual support, and raise the profile of the European and global Film and TV industry."
••• "We as the Film Commission see enormous potential in Euro Cine Expo collaborating with Filmfest München in Munich next summer. Euro Cine Expo is not simply an event for film technology, but will convey a festival flavour over the two days of the event.
••• Dr. Throsten Grieser, Commercial Director of FILMFEST MUNICH ads: "FILMFEST MÜNCHEN is not only Germany's largest summer film festival, but has also always been an important central meeting point for the national and international film industry at the end of June. Together with FFF Bayern and Euro Cine Expo we will be able to create an exciting and even broader B2B offering and further international networking opportunities."

115- Trends Shaping the Technology of Tomorrow at CES
••• The CES Show will display the next wave innovation that will shape 2023 and the economy of tomorrow. The show is set to feature a plethora of exhibitors advancing two of the most compelling technology megatrends of the future: intelligent automation and the evolution of the metaverse.
••• CES is right around the corner, with over 2100 exhibiting companies and hundreds of thought leaders from around the world are ready to show you how tech has never been more important in our lives. Key industry audiences are also showing strong commitment: 195 of the Fortune Global 500, 77 of the Interbrand 100, 66 of the top retailers, leading US and global media and attendees from 159 countries are already registered and joining us in Las Vegas. We're ready to bring the industry back together to experience the next generation of innovation.
••The Expansion of Intelligent Automation
•••Advancements in cloud infrastructure have allowed tech companies to pursue more expansive uses of intelligent automation. This will be critical as limited available hours and a tight labor market will require artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to play a larger role in the post-Covid economy.
•••A mainstay of past shows, autonomous vehicle (AV) technology will once again be on display with the intelligent automation technology's entire value chain showcased throughout CES 2022. From AV chipmakers like Qualcomm to leaders in AV perception technologies like LIDAR leader Luminar to Waymo, CES 2023 decidedly will be an intelligent mobility event.

  • History: Founded in 1956 by ABC's Sam Donaldson and his partner Al Preiss and acquired by the Cory's in 1987.

In April 1956 TVI (TELEvisionFILM Magazine) debuted it's first edition with offices at 1580 Crossroad of the World, Hollywood, CA. In March, 1963, TVI hosted the first "Annual Festival of World TV Classics Award " at the Huntington Hartford Theater. Since 1956 TVI grew to command the print readership of television network executives in 142 countries on six continents, covering the industry of television, film, telecommunication and WiTEL. In the mid-90s Television International Magazine (TVI Magazine) went online as: tvimagazine.com

. . . "People read what they want," says tviNews. "There is no master plan what people are interested in." The question is, how can we partner with people to have a symbiotic realationship?

Television Internatinal Magazine Founder, Sam Donaldson.
Samuel Andrew Donaldson became interested in broadcasting at an early age and, after graduating from New Mexico Military institute, majored in telecommunications at Texas Western. He immediately began working at local stations as a disc jockey, announcer and interviewer. While still in El Paso, he had his first taste of television, working as an announcer in the region's first television station.
•••• While attending graduate school at the University of Southern California, Donaldson met publisher Al Preiss, and they both formed TELEvisionFILM Magazine. Both seeing where the international television market was heading, the name was changed to Television International Magazine.
•••• In his book "Hold On Mr. President" Donaldson writes .... After getting my B.A., I went to the University of Southern California for a year of postgraduate work. This time I worked hard but didn't stick to it. Instead, I started a magazine in Hollywood all with five thousand dollars and a friend named al Preiss. We went first-class, letter press printing instead of offset, four-color ads instead of black and white. It soon became evident that we needed fifty thousand dollars, not five." Eventually Donaldson sold out to Al Preiss who continued publishing the magazine until his death in 1986. In 1987 The Cory's purchased the Magazine fro,m Al's widow Sylvia Preiss.

Television International Magazine Co-Founder, Al Preiss.
Born in Waseca, Minnesota, Preiss began his career in the newsroom at WCCO-TV in Minneapolis as a sportscaster. He later moved to Los Angeles, where he began teaching television courses at the University of Southern California.
••• It was there, in 1955 when Al Preiss had a vision -- a vision that materialized in 1956, when he and his colleague Sam Donaldson launched TELEvisionFilm Magazine.
••• Both Al and Sam had an honest conviction that, "the television film industry had reached a stage where it needed a national publication that would analyze and put into focus -- the news, issues and problems which particularly concern the production and distribution of film for television.
••• When Al Preiss died in August 1986, the television industry lost an untiring advocate and a giant of a good friend. The tall, wonderfully amiable publisher truly seemed to do it all -- attending nearly every press conference, speech, convention and reception, and was never seen without his trademark clear plastic briefcase. You turned around at these functions and there was Preiss, taking notes, talking animatedly, telling stories, doing his job. One that he not only loved, but felt was necessary and important. He did it all with the help of his charming wife of 25 years, Sylvia, who was editor of the magazine during the years of 1985 and 1986.
••• The controlling interest of the magazine, with all of its archival history was purchased in 1987 by the Cory's.

2006/ImagesPersonOfTheWeek/01NBStubblefieldPOW108w.jpgWarnerNBSPromoLogo108w.jpg 102- Nathan B. Stubblefield, the Man History Overheard
By Harvey Geller
•••• In Life's current Bicentennial issue, radio checks in, at #86 on the hot "100 Events That Shaped America," 19 buttons behind Bell's telephone. Erroneously, Life lists Guglielmo Marcon's dots and dashes as the first wireless broadcast, a fable echoed by the World Almanac and Encyclopedia Britannica. It's a forgivable mumpsimus, since the evidence offered on the following pages has not, until now, appeared in any national publication.
•••• The birth of broadcasting is a bizarre soap opera saga, a lacrymal legend of mystery, machination, ephemeral enshrinement, decline, disillusionment and disaster. It's denouncement dissolves six miles north of Murray, Kentucky, in a two-room shanty constructed of pine and cornstalks, where radio's uncelebrated architect is discovered 48 hours after his death, his records scattered, his equipment destroyed, his brain partly eaten by rats. Even local radio fails to mention his demise. He is Nathan Beverly Stubblefield, the man history over-heard and then overlooked.

TroyCoryChinaLogo108w.jpg ••• Troy Cory was among the first international entertainers and the first American entertainer to perform in the People's Republic of China, beginning in 1988. In itself a notable culture-historical feat, in view of China's closed door policies of the late 70s and well into the 80s. The PRC's administrative climate in comparison is much less restrictive now and China's open door policy enables many entertainers to introduce themselves to the populace Chinese audiences.

• • It was there Cory met Jiang Zemin, then mayor of Shanghai, and who later became the 5th President of the People's Republic of China.
The '88 Shanghai Concert was the beginnings of Troy's concert tours in China for the next two decades. The concerts, just to name a few, included the following cities: Shanghai, Beijing, Anshan, Harbin, Fuzhou and and Tsingtao (Qingdao)

114- Scott B. Whitenack-Stubblefield Esq., great-grand son of wireless telephone inventor, Nathan B. Stubblefield, died - By Troy Cory
Scott Bryan Whitenack passed away untimely on September 18, in Los Angeles, CA.
•••• Scott, aka Scott Stubblefield, was one of four children with siblings, Alden, Keith, and Priscilla. (His brother Keith pre-ceded him in death at the age of 32). His parents were Troy Cory Stubblefield, an entertainer and author and Dorothy Swafford, owner of a furniture and antiques retail store. Scott's children are Steven, David and grand-children, William, Bruce, Cora and Max, borne to Steven and Skylark. Scott's great-grandfather is Nathan B. Stubblefield, the inventor of Radio, in 1882, and patent holder of the wireless telephone (1908) and his great-great-great .... grandparents were - John and Priscilla Alden who were part of the pilgrimage who sailed on the Mayflower to Plymouth Rock from England in 1620.

(The Stubblefield story is incorporated within several photographs and denotes of and about S Scott to show how their personal ambitions and dreams parallel each other - both died - before their dreams and ambitions were fulfilled)

SCOTT.jpg
During the time he studied for the State Bar, Scott lived with Josie and myself on our family estate in Pasadena. He passed the State Bar the first time and was among only 33% to do so.
The balance of time was spent doing cinematography for my TV shows, which he considered an artistic outlet besides his major life's work, in the field of law. After he passed the State Bar he handled numerous legal cases and ended up working as an associate lawyer with Melvin Belli with whom he engaged in several cases and won a lawsuit that became precedent case law. Whitenack was committed to his legal profession for over three decades.

r•••
If you needed legal advice or help with a motion filing, Scott was there with his trusty law books. He was very intelligent, outspoken and an independent thinker.
•••• He also was a family man, who loved hiking and scuba diving, a good game of tennis and enjoyed bringing his sons to Paramount Ranch for regular family outings and Father's Day get-togethers.
•••• As to his love for cinematography he videotaped additional segments for the movie "Christmas around the World." Scott later became my producer and cinematographer for "To Catch a Dream" filmed in Europe. The video project brought him and the production team to Paris, Venice, Cannes, Munich and Salzburg. Said footage with perfect picture-book pans of the Eiffel Tower, the Seine River, the leaning Tower of Pisa and the Venice Bridge of Sigh, is a legacy he left behind for us.
•••• In the early 90s during the writing of our 4-volume set of books entitled "the SMART-DAAF Boys" about the invention of radio and the the wireless telephone, Scott lent a helpful hand in giving his legal aspect of his great-grandfather Nathan Stubblefield's copyrighted and patented invention. He also was the co-author of "Bank America, the Tortfeasor."

•••• ScottJohnWayneCrop200w.jpg

Scott as a teenager with John Wayne
at LA Herald-Express columnist Harrison Carroll's Cinema Reporting Prize press conference.

•••• His favorite poem is found on a card he prepared for one of my Father's Days titled "The Force That Through The Green Fuse Drives The Flower."

••••• He leaves behind his father, Troy Cory-Stubblefield, his mother Dorothy Steele, sister Priscilla Stubblefield Cory, brother and sister-in-law Alden and Sara Stubblefield, step mother Josie Cory-Stubblefield, ex-wife Lore Engel Whitenack, sons David and Steven, daughter-in law Skylar, and great-grandchildren, William, Bruce, Cora and Max; Nephew Ryan Whitenack, and niece Jenny Wharton. His brother Keith pre-ceded him in death at the age of 32).
