In Memory of our friends, Joe Franklin, Stan Chambers, Gary Owens
114- TV Newsman, Stan Chambers died.
By: Gary Sunkin

Back in 1949, when the Story broke that a little girl was trapped in a well in San Marino thousands of Angelenos snapped on their Television sets. They kept them on for the next 27 hours. Stan Chambers, one of the two reporters with Bill Welch on the scene for KTLA-TV Channel 5's unusual broadcast, recalled years later of this role in TV News History. "It was then that I decided that I really wanted to be in News."
•••• Stan Chambers was with KTLA 5 News for 63 Years and covered over 22,000 stories for the Los Angeles TV station from fires, floods, plane crashes, to car chases, and more. Among the major stories Chambers reported were the 1961 Bel-Air Fires/Brentwood Fire, the 1963, Baldwin Hills dam disaster, the 1965 Watts Riots, the 1968 assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, the 1971 Sylmar Earthquake and the 1984 Olympics.
••••Before he retired in 2010, he received the longtime broadcaster for the Society of Professional Journalists' Helen Thomas Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. His many honors include numerous local Emmy and Golden Mike award, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a building at KTLA named after him.
••• Chambers passed away on February 13th, 2015 in this home in Holmby Hills, California. He died at 10:30 am at 91 years old. He was a gentleman, and one of the nicest persons, always treating people with respect. I had known Stan Chambers for about 50 years.

114- GaryOwens, announcer on "Rowan & Martin's Laught-In" Died. He was 80.
••• Gary Owens whose deep voice was one of the most famous in show business, was a familiar part of radio, TV and movies for more than six decades.
•••• He hosted thousands of radio programs, appeared on scores of TV shows, including Lucille Ball and Bob Hope specials, did commercials and also voiced hundreds of animated characters.
••••On "Laugh-In," the 1968-73 sketch show starring Dan Rowan and Dick Martin, Owens was shown on camera in a parody of an old-school announcer, with his hand cupped firmly over his ear. But his voice was always the real thing, rich and authoritative.
••••Owens had "such a great voice, so smooth. That was his real voice, even if he was ordering in a restaurant," said Tom Kenny, the "SpongeBob SquarePants" voice actor who worked with Owens on cartoons including "Dexter's Laboratory."
••••"Laugh-In" creator and producer George Schlatter, who knew Owens but said he hired him for the show after hearing his voice boom through the Smoke House restaurant restroom, called him a "lovely, lovely man."
••••"He had a whimsical, fey sense of humor and he brought a lot to 'Laugh-In' in the way of thoughts, words and jokes," Schlatter said.
••••Given Owens' jam-packed resume, was he a workaholic?
••••"Gary did not work. Gary played," Schlatter said. "He was a very charming, creative, witty guy who had a good time."
•••• Owens, a native of Plankinton, South Dakota, was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in Washington D.C. in 1995 and into the National Television Hall of Fame in 2001.
••• He arrived in Los Angeles in 1961, and was heard on a variety of Los Angeles radio stations including KMPC, KFI and KIIS FM, and hosted a national show on The Music of Your Life Network. He was part of Armed Forces Radio for 10 years and host of the syndicated "Soundtrack of the 60s."
"Beautiful downtown Burbank"-
the catchphrase coined by Owens on his KMPC show, became a favorite of Johnny Carson on NBC's "Tonight Show."
••••Owens' animation voiceover credits include "Space Ghost," ''Blue Falcon" and "Garfield and Friends" and "The Ren & Stimpy Show."
••••"National Lampoon's European Vacation," ''The Green Hornet" and "Neil Simon's Prisoner of Second Avenue" were among his film credits.
••••Besides son Scott, Owens is survived by his wife of 57 years, Arleta, and their son, Chris, a musician and producer.

110- Google releases translate App upgrade
•••The idea of a universal translator has been a longtime fixture in science fiction and a welcome tool of every language student.
•••• The app is an advanced mobile-translation tool, recognizing more than three dozen languages. But it's part of a much bigger trend and, with service like Microsoft's Skype translator, turning video chats into real-time multilingual conversations.
•••• With the new app, you are able to detect the languages being spoken so you don't even have to press the translation button on the phone each time you talk. It's now so much more natural.
Google Translate has had voice controls for a few years, but the latest version works more seamlessly.
••••In this version, the app is supposed to pick up who is talking based on the language being spoken. So, say you wanted to order a slice of chicken pizza in Italian. Using the app, you could walk into a pizza parlor, and, with your lips at an awkward proximity to the phone's microphone, make your request, after which a robotic voice would spit out the question in Italian.
•••••Google has been doing some form of translation since 2001. The Google Translate app now has 90 languages and some one billion daily users. Barak Turovsky, the product leader for Google Translate, said that 95 percent of the people who use Google's translation technology -- whether on a phone or desktop -- live outside the United States.

115- CES 2015: Wearables Everywhere. Intel demos button size wearable computer
•••• Intel CEO Brian Krzanich showed off a minuscule computer, dubbed Curie, during a keynote speech at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. He pulled a button off his blazer, and chatted with someone through a robot during the keynote presentation.
•••• The button stick let him unveil Curie, a new computing module that's the size of the button. It's tiny size emphasizes it can power a raft of new wearable technology such as rings and bracelets. Curie will become available to wearable makers this year.
•••• Curie appeared much smaller than a postage-stamp-size computer, called Edison, that Krzanich showed off at last year's CES, and is a sign that hardware makers are eager to build wearable devices of all kinds. It also points to the unwelcome size of many existing smart watches and smart glasses.

CES 2015: • 106- Net neutrality rules reclassification proposed
••• Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler strongly hinted Wednesday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that he would propose net neutrality rules next month that treat broadband Internet service providers as utilities subject to much stricter regulation. That however would clash with powerful cable tv operators that offer Internet access.
•••• If Wheeler does propose to reclassify ISPs and regulate them under Title II of the Communications Act, that would be a stinging defeat for ISPs and a victory for advocates of a stringent approach to net neutrality -- including President Obama, who appointed Wheeler. It also would almost certainly draw a challenge in court and from the Republican-controlled Congress.

• PASADENA, Calif. -- Pasadena Celebrates New Year with Rose Parade
By Gary Sunkin
•••• Known as the most favorite parade to kick off the New Year for thousands of spectators who lined the 5 1/2 mile parade route through Pasadena. With temperatures dipping into the 30s crowed braved the chill for the 126th Rose Parade, and embraced an occasional beam of sunshine as some were bundled up in blankets and scarfs in grandstand seats and choice spots on sidewalks along the route. The 2015 theme chowcased those who "elevate the human spirit by who they are, what they have done and what they continue to do.
•••• Every year I revel in the excitement, exuberance and optimism in the air, and again this year's themed "Inspiring Stories", didn't find me disappointed.
••• "Inspiring Stories" was the theme of the 126th Rose Parade presented by Honda.
•••• The very nature of this theme allows us to reflect on and appreciate many people around us who elevate the human spirit by who they are, what they have done, and what they continue to do. It pays tribute to those who have loved unconditionally, persevered courageously, endured patiently and accomplished much on behalf of others.

106- Supreme court rules TV streaming service Aereo illegal
Justices accept argument of major broadcasters that Aereo's service amounts to a violation of copyright law.

••••The US supreme court has ruled that Aereo, the TV streaming service backed by media mogul Barry Diller, is illegal.
•••• In a 6-3 decision, the court rejected an earlier appeals court decision which had ruled the fledgling service did not breach broadcasters' copyright. The Supreme Court has ruled that Aereo, the upstart television streaming service, violated copyright laws by resending broadcast signals without paying licensing fees.

///106- ATBA says FCC report spells war on broadcasters.
WASHINGTON DC &endash; After consideration and study of the GN Docket No. 12-268 REPORT & ORDER released by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on June 2nd, the Advanced Television Broadcasting Alliance (ATBA) voiced concern that the FCC has declared war on broadcasters, especially LPTV and Translator stations. The FCC is seemingly denying a significant amount of the nation free over-the-air television access in favor of providing well-funded wireless carriers with more spectrum for profit. The FCC in the R&O concluded that the concerns of broadcasters "are outweighed by the detrimental impact that protecting LPTV and TV translator stations would have on the repacking process and on the success of the incentive auction."

tviNews Reports
By: Josie Cory, Mark Anderson, and Troy Cory

i/dh-TroyInterviewer-108.jpg••••In an era that has seen the downsizing or demise of most household-name tradeshows, Digital Hollywood is flourishing as a sort of live-content aggregator attracting various industry stalwarts to hold private meetings all at the same venue, then network together at conference tracks, keynote roundtables and after-hours parties.
•••• Victor Harwood who is presiding over several annual trade shows dealing with entertainment, media, advertising and technology events, besides Digital Hollywood, said back in 2007, "The idea of putting together a tradeshow by hassling people to buy booth space is old -- anyone who did that is not in business anymore."
•••• His upcoming Spring confab at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, in Marina Del Rey, CA, made up of separate multi-track but co-located events is still the only conference that brings together creatives, agents, distributors, technologists, financiers, lawyers and media -- legally, it's very hard for a lot of these people to be in the same room, unless there's a common purpose and a common theme. More minds have been changed -- at Digital Hollywood than at any other conference."

/Imagescustomers/DigitalHollywood108w.jpg106- AereoVs.Broadcasters
The Areo Debate "To Be or Not to Be," provided food for a heated discussion at the Digital Hollywood Spring conference May 7, 2014. Moderated by James M. Burger, Partner, Thompson Coburn, Neil W. Netanel, Professor of Law, UCLA Law School; John C. Ulin Partner, Arnold and Porter midway through the debate were interreupted by questions of the audience which became increasingly agitated. It did make for a lively debate though considering the fact that most panelists usually take questions only at the end of a panel discussion.
•••• A ruling to be followed closely by advocates of net neutrality, and broadcasters, the US Supreme Court justices questioned the legality of Areo as they weighed whether the starup violates copyright law by recording over-the-air programming from an off-site antenna and delivering it to customers via the internet. Areo aims to upend the broadcast industry's decades-old business model by letting customers in 11 cities watch live and recorded shows for as little as $8 a month.
•••• Barry Diller, Chairman and Senior Executive of media company, IAC/InterActiveCorp, said broadcasters are seeking to stifle innovation for their own financial gain by suing to shut down Aereo Inc., the streaming-video company he's backing. "I am really tired of being accused of stealing anyone else's programming when we are not," Diller said. "It's kind of obnoxious to take away programming they have promised the public they could receive directly simply because they want to take away every dollar from consumers.

i/dh-TroyInterviewer-108.jpg/images-2014-tShows.tvi/fcc-Mark-Hoffman108.jpg

Aereo's faceoff at the nation's highest court against broadcasters including 21st Century Fox Inc., and CBS Corp, stemmed from its bid to forge a technological route around the television companies' copyrights. It was Diller, co-creator of Fox's broadcast network, who pushed Aereo beyond its original plan to offer services only in parts of New York, Aereo CEO Chet Kanojia stated.
•••The Supreme Court arguments didn't indicate a like outcome, as justices, including Stephen Breyer repeatedly questioned whether ruling against Aereo would broadly imperil cloud-computing technologies that let consumers remotely store content such as video and access it through the Web.
•••• U.S. copyright law gives owners the exclusive right to perform their works "publicly." If Areo is deemed to be a public rather than private performance, the ruling may affect cloud storage offerings from companies like Google Inc., Dropbox Inc., Apple, Amazon.com Inc. and Box Inc.
•••• "If you stop Aereo, you stop technology," Diller said.

"Let me be clear. If someone acts to divide the Internet between 'haves' and 'have-nots,' we will use every power at our disposal to stop it," Wheeler said. "As chairman of the FCC, I do not intend to allow innovation to be strangled by the manipultion of the most important network of our time, the Internet."
•••The Cable Show, the industry's 2014 annual gathering in Los Angeles had no shortage of news to pick apart given Comcast's 45 billion deal  to buy Time Warner Cable as well as the deal Comcast cut with Charter Communications.
•••• But what was actually on the minds of many were the companies that weren't at the show at all: Netflix, Hulu, Amazon.com, Google, Yahoo, AT&T, Verizon, Dish and DirecTV -- essentially every company that isn't strictly speaking a cable company.
•••• However, the fact that Netflix was nowhere to be found at the show, either at the session or on the exhibition floor, was telling.
•••••The National Cable and Telecommunications Association, which runs the Cable Show, says companies such as Netflix have appeared at the conference in the past to participate on panels, but they've never been a big presence.
•••• Many of the cable networks, such as Turner (which owns CNN and TNT), Fox News, Discovery Communications and AMC were there partly to show off their programming, but mostly to take meetings with the cable industry. Privately, some of them have said the conference would be more useful if the satellite and telephone companies were also here.

106 The Book --"A Deal to Steal-Wireless TelePhone®™© - the Movie" -- (Library of Congress: Catalog# 2012906001)
109- dealtosteal680.html / Book Review: The Wireless Telephone®™© - "the Movie." "Sometimes an idea whose time
has come -- is just a little too soon!"

••• This fast-moving, epic-scale 440 page tviPublishing.com book, %5E%3D%A5SMART90MAY-%40mac150/ImagesStub/stubtelephondelgreen108w.jpgdocuments over 110 years of the device itself, and the effects & elements of The Wireless Telephone®™©. The device, and the elements and effects attached thereto, were first developed, registered, demonstrated, and published by: NATHAN B. STUBBLEFIELD, of MURRAY, KENTUCKY
•••The sole purpose of the public Wireless Telephone®™© demonstrations was to sell territorial deeds throughout the U.S.A. for the use of his WiTEL®™© device for broadcasting purposes, that including his 7 digital TeleKey Area Code connecting system.
••• Since that time, 1892 to 2012, the improvments of his designs and the maintanance of his intelectual property rights by his territorial deed Wireless Telephone®™© holders, and his heirs. A few of the name changes used, and accepted by the NBSwitel.com organization to identify and update the Wireless Telephone®™© name to fit modern-day unsage include: Radio, Television, LookRadio, WiTEL, CellPhone, iPhone, Firewire-187, etc.
••• Like authors of the Bell & Edison inventions, the NBS WirelessTelephone.org family will own the nbswitel.com intellectual property rights -- "FOREVER MINUS A DAY."
•••
The five chapters of WiTEL facts, and true-life adventures of one of the most unsung inventors in history, whose revolutionary innovations have effected every human being on the planet over the last three generations! Based on the true story of inventor and part-time melon farmer Nathan B. Stubblefield's (and subsequently his grandson Troy Cory's) battle with the government and U.S. telephone industry.
••• "Firewire" tells the tale of two very different men from two very different eras who share not only the same blood, but the same fight - whose battle to receive recognition for the invention of the wireless telephone would come at a heavy price. But the determined small-town inventor and the impassioned big-city entertainer both refused to be silenced, and they took on the rural backstabbers and the corporate titans alike in a battle that nobody thought either could win.
••• The Stubblefields started out as a typical 1880's Kentucky family, trying to live their version of the American Dream, but ended up as anything but! When Nathan invents a unique device that he prophesied would eventually be used by nearly everyone in the world &endash; he was not far from wrong. Decades later, when his grandson learns that it was his relative who indeed invented the wireless phone, Cory thinks he's struck gold. But his aspirations are dashed after the telephone monopolies and political pirates who initially seized Stubblefield's creation as their own are just as determined to shut out his descendant decades later, as well.
•••Ignored, threatened and then buried in years of struggle, Cory is haunted by what was done to his family. He becomes a man obsessed with justice and the conviction that his grandfather's life work -- or for that matter, anyone's work -- be acknowledged by those who stood to benefit. And while paying the toll for refusing to compromise his dignity, this everyday David will try the unthinkable: to strategically bring Goliath to his knees in a cooperation with truth and justice for all. --Donna Jeffries
• You don't get to bust through the airwaves without catching a little static
••• Across the landscape of the American Industrial Revolution, within the field of urban electrification and communication, the legacy of prominent inventors such as George Westinghouse, Thomas Edison, and Alexander Graham Bell stand proud. Their achievements celebrated, their status recognized. But they do not stand alone. Concealed by the shadows of history, and even more by the deviousness of corrupt men in power, is the figure of Nathan B. Stubblefield, a contemporary of those great men and one of that era's most innovative and prolific inventors..
••• At the time of his death in 1928, Stubblefield had been granted dozens of patents, mostly relating to electrical and wireless technologies. His inventions completely revolutionized the world of communications that we know today, yet not many people even know his name. With over 5.6 billion wireless phones in use today - there's no denying, wireless technology has irreversibly changed the world..
••• This story will open your eyes and challenge what you think you know about not only your cell phone, but the challenges and the victories that brought these innovations to us in the first place. More importantly, it gives us insight into the human tragedy and triumph that was and still is a part of the reality of our most innovative technological pioneers today in America. --Donna Jeffries

• 102c- Birthplace of the Wireless Telephone®™©, and its NBS Wireless Telephone®™© registered service marks.
•• The NBS Wireless Telephone®™© organization, founded in Murray, Kentucky, doesn't manufacture the present-day Wireless Telephone®™© . . . "BUT DOES MAKE the iPhone and CellPhones of today WORK," says Troy Cory-Stubblefield.
••• As chief executive of the NBS WiTEL®™© organization, Troy Cory-Stubblefield closely watches over the way the effects and elements of his NBS WiTEL®™© organization are used and paid for by Telco providers, and users.
••• Underlining each and every Wireless Telephone®™© sold today . . . is a NBS WiTEL®™© service mark utilized by iPhone, and Cellphone provider/users. Charging high-tech batteries by its NBS EMW induction system, or being assigned a WiTEL®™© phone number to connect each WiTEL®™© user together are just a couple of the elements. The NBS Wireless Telephone®™© was invented and developed at Teléph-on-délgreen Industrial School, Murray, Kentucky, commencing in 1892.
stubtelephondelgreen300w.jpg••• The once upon a time Kentucky industrial school . . . is once again star-crossed. But this time, with a happy ending. Murray, Kentucky touts itself as the birthplace of the Wireless Telephone®™©, and with ample reason. Taking a throwback to 1907, the Nathan B. Stubblefield Industrial School was renamed to Teléph-on-délgreen, and again several decades later to emerge at same location as Murray State University.
••• Still a humbling sense of history so deep-seated that residents often rattle off dates: 1892, 1898, 1902, then 1908. That year symbolizes the granting of all of the Service Marks needed for Murray's monopoly of the Wireless Telephone®™©. 1910, was the year NBS' Teléph-on-délgreen WiTel construction began in a big way. The years 1910 through 1914 also marks the time of great change in American RF WiTEL®™© industry. The managerial side of industry was growing and American corporations were reorganizing and becoming more efficient with the help of the U.S. government,.
NBSPatent02AutoDraw108w.jpg•• 1914, the NBSWireless Telephone®™© manufacturing ends, and one-way listening devices Radios, begins. With the enachment of Government regulatory RF seizures. Teléph-on-délgreen's NBS WiTel®™© EMW etherwave pipeline is replaced with a new word -- "RF," and "RADIO." (see Mann-Elkins Act of 1910, and the 1913 "Kingsbury Commitment).
••• The years 1907, 1929, and 2008 are all asscociated with the great depressions, followed by years of growth of the fabled Murray State University, NBS WiTEL®™©, AT&T, GE, and now -- the free for all Internet user.
••• No mater how you look at it, many obserers believe it's just a matter of time before lawmakers step in to decide once and for all who calls the shots for the "freebie" EMWs provided by the 1907 Wireless Telephone®™© service marks. Will the winner be the Telco operator, online users, or the rules of laws set forth in writting to protect service mark owners?

In March, 1963, TVI hosted the first "Annual Festival of World TV Classics Award " at the Huntington Hartford Theater. Television Internatinal Magazine Founder, Al Preiss.
Born in Waseca, Minnesota, Preiss began his career in the newsroom at WCCO-TV in Minneapolis as a sportscaster. He later moved to Los Angeles, where he began teaching television courses at the University of Southern California.
••• It was there, in 1955 when Al Preiss had a vision -- a vision that materialized in 1956, when he and his colleague Sam Donaldson launched TELEvisionFilm Magazine.
••• Both Al and Sam had an honest conviction that, "the television film industry had reached a stage where it needed a national publication that would analyze and put into focus -- the news, issues and problems which particularly concern the production and distribution of film for television.
••• When Al Preiss died in August 1986, the television industry lost an untiring advocate and a giant of a good friend. The tall, wonderfully amiable publisher truly seemed to do it all -- attending nearly every press conference, speech, convention and reception, and was never seen without his trademark clear plastic briefcase. You turned around at these functions and there was Preiss, taking notes, talking animatedly, telling stories, doing his job. One that he not only loved, but felt was necessary and important. He did it all with the help of his charming wife of 25 years, Sylvia, who was editor of the magazine during the years of 1985 and 1986.
••• The controlling interest of the magazine, with all of its archival history was purchased in 1987 by Television International, Inc., headed by Josie Cory.

115- Cory's Road to Harbin, China
Troy Cory was among the first international entertainers and the first American entertainer to perform in the People's Republic of China, beginning in 1988. In itself a notable culture-historical feat, in view of China's closed door policies of the late 70s and well into the 80s. The PRC's administrative climate in comparison is much less restrictive now and China's open door policy enables many entertainers to introduce themselves t o the populace Chinese audiences
