China's National Television, viewed by over 300

as the first and only performers allowed to visit

without government control!
---- Troy has reigned in China, as the
American Pop/Country Singer, for over sixteen
years. His 1988 STV Festival TV show appearance was
televised and seen by over 300 million Chinese
viewers-----Being one of the first Americans to
entertain and help bring in a billion dollars worth
of business to and from China, Troy accepts himself
as an ambassador of goodwill. Troy with his China /
U.S.A. resources, has been able to combine his
Musical / TV Shows, with his China Expo Trade
Missions, since 1988.
----Back with Larry on the Beat
Larry's new "discovery" the gorgeous Sandra Giles
is a famous swing dancer and actress who's actually
been a part of the entertainment industry for a
long time. Sandra, who started her career doing
tire commercials and later in acting &endash;
starred in her first film "The Matchmaker" back in
1958. Talk about matchmaking - over the years,
Sandra has dated many famous actors including Elvis
Presley, Omar Shariff and Frank Sinatra.
---- No one could miss her as she cruised
around in her pink 1957 T-Bird with the pink mink
interior! Sandra is famous for her phenomenal
dancing ability, and avidly continues to promote
West Coast Swing. In her illustrious career Sandra
has also appeared in films such as, "Daddy-O",
"Last of the Red Hot Lovers", and "It Happened at
the World's Fair" and in TV series such as "Odd
Couple", "Land of the Giants", and "Columbo".
The
30th annual Saturn Awards were
recently held at the Sheraton Universal Hotel
Ballroom
and Larry was there!
----According
to actress Ann Robinson (star of SciFi classic film
"War of the Worlds") who was with Larry at the
star-studded event, "Larry is always there at the
right time". In fact it was Larry who introduced
his long-time friend Ann to director James Cameron
that evening. Cameron was very excited to meet Ann
and discuss the making of "The War of the Worlds"
with her. Ann happens to be a very intelligent
storehouse of information on not only the famous
film, but all topics related &endash; such as
space, science, statistics, special effects, etc..
Cameron was delighted to learn about how some of
the special effects were done. The film was done
way back before the technology we have today
existed. According to Ann, "We didn't have
computers back then &endash; we had smarts and
genius
punching a button and blowing up
things doesn't take a
genius".
----Cameron was particularly interested in
how the special effects were done to make the
films' alien arm look like it shriveled up and died
in one notable scene. Ann explained to him that the
alien body was really hollow and that they had
ingeniously filled it with air and red lights. When
it was time for the alien to die &endash; they
simply changed the red lights to grey then sucked
all of the air out of the alien to make it appear
as if it was shriveling and dying! Incredibly, for
another scene, the alien body was originally
supposed to be packed with raw liver! But expert,
Charlie Gemora and his daughter took the situation
into their hands and ended up putting Charlie into
the alien suit instead!
---- As for the famous, eerie sounds of the
alien spaceships &endash; Ann reveals that the
"boing, boing" sound of the firing spaceships were
actually the sounds of a loose guitar string being
plucked and recorded backwards! The hissing sounds
of the spaceships were actually sounds emitted from
high-tension poles being struck by big sticks! And
the sound of the aliens unscrewing their spaceship
door was really a mayonnaise jar being opened in
the bottom of an empty toilet bowl! The classic
film, which won an Oscar for its phenomenal special
effects, is considered to be one of the greatest
science-fiction masterpieces of all time. It's
amazing what you could do with $600,000 and a
little genius back then!
----By the way, Variety magazine has
reported that Tom Cruise will be producing and is
set to star in a remake of "The War of the Worlds",
with Steven Spielberg to direct. In honor of the
enduring interest in this film and in celebration
of it's 50th Anniversary this year, Paramount
Pictures will be releasing a new DVD version soon.
Ann and her co-star of the film, Gene Barry just
finished up doing special interviews which will be
included in the new DVD package. Gene Barry, by the
way, just celebrated his birthday on June 14
&endash; Happy Birthday Gene!!
---- Meanwhile, back at The Saturn
Awards
the awards, which are presented
annually by The Academy of Science Fiction Fantasy
& Horror Films, was originally founded by the
late Dr. Donald Reed &endash; who was the genius
behind the transformation of the "Count Dracula
Society" into what we know today as The Academy of
Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror
Films.
----When the Academy gave out their first
awards over 30 years ago, SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE and
BLACULA were the hot winners, and genre films were
not taken very seriously. But all of that has
changed today - genre films and their creators are
now the mainstream and are among the most
successful and respected in the industry. This
year's Oscar sweep of LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF
THE KING finally ended the idea that SciFi or
fantasy films could not combine commercial success
with awards acceptance.
---- This years Saturn Award Winners
included: Best Actress on a TV series &endash;
Amber Tamblyn for "Joan of Arcadia"; Best Actor on
a TV series &endash; David Boreanaz for "Angel";
Best Actress in Film &endash; Uma Thurman for "Kill
Bill"; Best Actor in Film &endash; Elijiah Wood for
"Lord of the Rings"; Best Film Director &endash;
Peter Jackson &endash;for "Lord of the Rings" -
which also won for Best Film; Best Horror Film
award went to "28 Days"; and The Best SciFi Film
award went to "X 2: X-Men
United".
----This years Saturn Awards were produced
by Steven Carter and Robert Holguin - who made sure
to place a huge one-sheet from "War of the Worlds"
right up in front by the podium &endash; because,
as he said, it's his favorite movie and he knew Ann
Robinson would be there that night. The ceremony
started out with a funny short introductory film
called "Who Are The Saturn Awards?" After the film,
Mark Altman gave a short introductory address, and
then they brought out the master of ceremonies,
comedian Jeffrey Ross.
---- If you've ever seen any of those
"celebrity roasts" then you can imagine the type of
acerbic wit Ross was trying to achieve &endash;
unfortunately he ended up offending half of the
audience with his opening remarks. "An awards show
for science fiction and horror... you people are
freaks and geeks. The best looking guy here tonight
is Gollum."
---- The first award of the evening was
actually a holdover from last year's award
ceremony, when James Cameron was unable to attend
to pick up his Donald A. Reed Award. Upon receiving
his award, Cameron wrapped up his speech by saying,
"I look back at how science fiction and fantasy was
treated when I was a kid, and even when I was
starting out, and it was ghettoized. Now, they are
among the most successful and commercially
acclaimed films ever. We may all be freaks and
geeks, but these days, that's a pretty great thing
to be."
---- Gale Anne Hurd also accepted the Donald
A. Reed Award, as this years honoree. She and
Cameron, who picked up the same award, bookended
the evening with their acceptance speeches. Hurd
also talked about how Dr. Reed was one of the first
people to actually support the original TERMINATOR
at a time when even the films' distributor seemed
ashamed of it. Which seems incredible since the
film is now acknowledged as a classic.
---- Another classic in the news &endash; is
the film "Imitation of Life" starring Lana Turner.
"Imitation of Life" recently held its 40 year
Anniversary screening and celebration of the films
new print, in Hollywood. Ann Robinson - who is seen
around Hollywood a lot lately - also happened to
star as a chorus girl in the film, along with
Juanita Moore and Susan Kohner. Ann was a part of
what was known as the "Golden Circle" back then
&endash; a group of talented contract players
destined for stardom. Barbara Rush, Marion Ross and
Judith Ames were also a part of this
group.
----We are all sorrowful to see the passing
of former president Ronald Reagan. Larry happens to
have an interesting story about how he met Reagan
many years ago. During pre-production and casting
of the early 1970's SciFi film "Monster A-Go Go"
producer Bill Rabane and Larry were hanging around
one rainy day on Randolph Street in Chicago. Rabane
and Larry - who Rabane called "My associate and
press agent with a lot of guts" &endash; were late
to a meeting so were rushing around, and
practically mowed down this man in a trench coat
who was also rushing to get underneath the marquee
of the Woods Theatre and out of the rain. The man
wearing the trench coat just happened to be Ronald
Reagan.
---- Having few inhibitions in those days,
the dynamic duo ended up blurting out the whole
synopsis (of "Monster A-Go Go") to Ronald Reagan,
as they all stood there together under the marquee.
Larry and Bill took extra measure to make sure to
tell Reagan that actress June Travis was set to
co-star in the film and that they felt sure that he
would be the perfect star for the flick. Maybe not
too far fetched &endash; after all Reagan did star
in a flick about a chimp called "Bedtime for
Bonzo".
---- It just so happened that not only did
Reagan know June Travis, but he also knew one of
the investors of the film. Reagan ended up asking
to see the script and to work out a deal with his
agent. He carefully wrote his agents name on a pad
of paper for them, and told the duo that if they
could work it out that he might be interested in
it! - Leave it to Leverett again!
