• 101- The Annual PaleyFest is headed back to the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood

LOS ANGELES, February 2024 -- The Paley Center for Media announced the schedule for the 41st annual William S. Paley Television Festival, which will take place from Friday, April 12 through Saturday, April 20, at the DOLBY THEATRE in Hollywood.
•••• The nation's premier television festival celebrating creative excellence, PaleyFest LA brings audiences together with television's brightest stars from the most acclaimed and buzzworthy TV shows, and features screenings of special preview and premiere content with never-before-seen TV footage.
•••• The 2024 selections encompass a collection of the best programs that television has to offer featuring beloved shows celebrating their farewell seasons and milestone anniversaries, as well new shows certain to take their place among television's most iconic series and current fan favorites. This year's festival will open with a conversation with the stars of the award-winning The Morning Show (Apple TV+), which will be followed by events honoring Loki (Disney+), Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO) and Young Sheldon (CBS) both celebrating their farewell seasons, the highly anticipated Avatar: The Last Airbender (Netflix), Late Night with Seth Meyers (NBC) celebrating its 10th anniversary, Family Guy (FOX) celebrating its 25th anniversary with a live table read, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (CBS).

• SAG-AFTRA Members Ratify TV Animation Agreements
LOS ANGELES (Mar. 22, 2024) -- In national voting completed today, members of SAG-AFTRA ratified the 2023 Television Animation Agreement and the 2023 Basic Cable Animation Agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Members approved the new three-year contracts by a vote of 95.52% to 4.48%.

•• The contracts provide strong protections around the use of artificial intelligence and a pattern-busting 7% wage increase that applies retroactively to July 1, 2023.

••• "The foundation of this agreement was based on the feedback we got from members who work these contracts, and that remained the negotiating committee's focus throughout bargaining. We are proud to have delivered an agreement that offers big wins in those areas," said TV Animation Negotiating Committee Co-Chairs Bob Bergen and David Jolliffe. "This is the first SAG-AFTRA animation voiceover contract with protections against the misuse of artificial intelligence."

•• "This contract represents a meaningful step forward in expanding our A.I. protections. The contract provides important new terms in the areas of foreign residuals, high-budget SVOD productions, late payments and much more. I am gratified we were able to achieve these significant gains without the need for a work stoppage, and want to express my appreciation to our outstanding negotiating committee chairs and members, as well as lead negotiator Ray Rodriguez and the dedicated negotiating staff," said National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland.

••• Votes were submitted online and by mail-in ballot, with the deadline of today, March 22, 2024, at 5 p.m. PDT. The final vote was certified by Integrity Voting Systems, an impartial election service based in Everett, Washington. The agreement becomes effective retroactive to July 1, 2023, and expires June 30, 2026.

•••• Negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers were delayed due to last year's TV/Theatrical strike, and the previous contract was extended. On Feb. 22, SAG-AFTRA announced the tentative agreement with the AMPTPT.

  Cillian Murphy, wins Best Actor for "Oppenheimer"

Oppenheimer Scores Seven Wins during the night, including Best Picture, Actor,
Supporting Actor, Director, Original Score, Cinematography, Editing

In a surprise, Emma Stone won best actress for Poor Things, which also snapped up three crafts wins, for best costume design, production design, and makeup and hairstyling. She beat out perceived frontrunner Lily Gladstone, who has scooped up numerous awards for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon.

Da'Vine Joy Randolph won best supporting actress for The Holdovers.

Hayao Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki's "The Boy and the Heron" was named best animated feature, while Jonathan Glazer's "The Zone of Interest" won the Oscar for best international feature. 20 Days in Mariupol won the award for best documentary.

Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell won the Oscar for best original song for "What Was I Made For?" from Barbie.

Justine Triet and Arthur Harari won best original screenplay for "Anatomy of a Fall," while Cord Jefferson won best adapted screenplay for "American Fiction."

• 115-Oscars No Shows, 1960 - 2016
• Hollywood stars who snubbed the Academy Awards
There have only been three people that refused the awards, actors George C. Scott and Marlon Brandon and screen writer Dudly Nichols.
Not everyone in Hollywood enjoys the gala event. Over the years, a handful of Hollywood A-listers have refused to attend the ceremony, and some who've sidestepped the show did so when they were up for awards of their own.
•••• From Katharine Hepburn to Will Smith, here are Hollywood stars who snubbed the Oscars.
•••• 2016 - Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith called for a boycott of the Academy Awards ceremony upon learning that the nominations, for the second year in a row, featured no actors of color. The actress and her superstar husband, Will Smith, were soon joined in the boycott by other Hollywood heavyweights including Oscar-winning directors Spike Lee and Michael Moore, while other stars -- including Oscar winners George Clooney and Lupita Nyong'o -- spoke out in support.
•••• 2003 - Peter O' Toole - In 2003, Peter O' Toole became the first actor to ever refuse an honorary Oscar. Maybe he did so out of pride. The legendary "Lawrence of Arabia" star, who'd been nominated eight times throughout his nearly 50-year career and lost every single time, wrote to the Academy, explaining, "I am still in the game and might win the lovely bugger outright. Would the Academy please defer the honor until I am 80?"
•••• The Academy responded by telling him stars like Paul Newman and Henry Fonda were given Honorary Oscars and went on to actually win one shortly after. O'Toole was sold, and happily showed up to accept his award.
•••• 2002 - Woody Allen though he's been nominated several times throughout his decades-long career, has never shown up to receive an Academy Award, explaining, "I have no regard for that kind of ceremony. I just don't think they know what they're doing. When you see who wins those things -- or who doesn't win them -- you can see how meaningless this Oscar thing is."
•••• Allen did make one appearance on the Oscars stage. In 2002, just six months after the September 11 attacks, the director presented a montage of films made in his beloved New York City.
•••• 1987 - Paul Newman was nominated six times from 1961 until 1982, and although he attended the ceremony many times, he never took home an award.
•••• Newman was nominated a seventh time in 1987 for "The Color Of Money." All bets were on him, but by that point, the actor was over it, and decided ahead of time he wouldn't attend the ceremony. "It's like chasing a beautiful woman for 80 years. Finally, she relents and you say, 'I'm terribly sorry. I'm tired,'" Newman explained.
•••• 1981 - John Gielgud, British actor, charmed audiences as the unflappable, acid-tongued butler Hobson in 1981's "Arthur," but the actor didn't bother showing up to the ceremony to accept his award when his name was called.
•• Gielgud, who throughout his eight-decade career nabbed two Oscars, three Tonys, an Emmy and a Grammy (among other honors) -- once said of awards shows, "I really detest all the mutual congratulation baloney and the invidious comparisons which they evoke.""
•••• 1974 - Katharine Hepburn holds a Hollywood record for being nominated 12 times and winning four Oscars over her long career, but she never attended the ceremony to hear her name called. "As for me, prizes are nothing," she once said. "My prize is my work." Hepburn made exactly one appearance at the Academy Awards in 1974 to present the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award to producer and friend Lawrence Weingarten. "I'm living proof that a person can wait 41 years to be unselfish," she quipped.
•••• 1973 - Marlon Brando caused a ruckus when he boycotted the ceremony in 1973 to call attention to Hollywood's misrepresentation of Native Americans. Brando, who won Best Actor honors that year for his performance in "The Godfather," had Native American civil rights activist Sacheen Littlefeather approach the podium to decline his award and give a protest speech on his behalf.
•••• 1970 - George C. Scott was the first actor to refuse to accept an Oscar. The legendary actor, who was nominated in 1970 for his gripping portrayal of Gen. George S. Patton in "Patton," telegraphed the Academy months before the ceremony to let them know he didn't want the award. On the night of the ceremony, presenter Goldie Hawn opened the envelope and cried, "Oh my God! The winner is George C. Scott," but the actor, true to his word, was home on his farm in upstate New York.
•••• Scott said of the Oscars, "The ceremonies are a two-hour meat parade, a public display with contrived suspense for economic reasons." Oops!
•••• 1960 - Elizabeth Taylor, screen legend, was a frequent Oscar nominee, nabbing her first award for her role as a high-class escort in 1960's "Butterfield 8." Six years later, Taylor was poised to win again for her riveting performance opposite husband Richard Burton, who was also nominated, for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" However, Burton had already lost four times at the Oscars and would almost certainly lose again, so both husband and wife boycotted the ceremony in protest -- though Taylor made up an excuse about Burton being afraid to fly back to the states from Paris. Taylor did win again and never issued a statement thanking the Academy.

• 101- The 39th Los Angeles Marathon Runs its Course from Dodger Stadium to the Avenue of the Stars, on March 17th - By Gary Sunkin, TVI
•••• This year, the LA Marathon falls on Sunday, March 17, which happens to coincide with St. Patrick's Day. The forecast tells of sunny skies and afternoon highs in the 70s. Thousands of runners and spectators across the world will be in Southern California this weekend for the 39th Los Angeles Marathon. 
•••• The 39th running of the 26.2-mile marathon on Sunday will begin at Dodger Stadium. and continue through several Los Angeles neighborhoods before the finish at Avenue of Stars in Century City. About 25,000 participants are expected during race weekend, which features several events including the LA Big 5K and LA Kids run scheduled for Saturday, March 16 at Dodger Stadium.
•••• Runners will cover locations like Downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, Little Tokyo, Hollywood, and more and will pass iconic landmarks, including Rodeo Drive, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Pantages Theater, Capitol Records, and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels.
•••• Running participants will not only accomplish their personal goals but also support McCourt Foundation's mission to build a healthier world.
•••• The Los Angeles Marathon, inspired by the success of the 1984 Olympics, was first run in 1986. It is the most popular marathon in the western half of the United States and is also keen to boast that it is "one of the biggest parties anywhere."
•••• The Event has a maximum race day time of six hours and 30 minutes runners are expected to finish within the 6:30 hour space.

• 115- "Oppenheimer" leads pack for the 2024 Oscars nominations
LOS ANGELES, (January 23, 2024) - The nominations for the 2024 Oscars were announced today with "Oppenheimer" leading with 13 nods.
••••• Tuesday's announcement brought a moment of surprise with no best director nomination for Greta Gerwig for "Barbie" - she and Noah Baumbach were nominated for the movie's adapted screenplay - and no acting nod for star Margot Robbie, who was also a
producer for the best picture nominee. ("To say that I'm disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement," said Ryan Gosling, who was nominated for his role as Ken.) Past Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio, who starred in "Killers of the Flower Moon," also did not receive an acting nomination this year.

••••• Meanwhile, DiCaprio's co-star Lily Gladstone became the first Native American to be nominated for best actress. America Ferrera scored a best supporting actress nomination for her performance in "Barbie" and Justine Triet became the eighth woman nominated for best director for "Anatomy of a Fall."

THE 96TH ACADEMY AWARDS will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2024 at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, honoring movies released in 2023.

• 101- The Octogenerian - ATAS a glittering dream - By Syd Cassyd

Hollywood, CA - The glittering dreams of the world for a new culture and perhaps world peace through television and radio turned to ashes when Hitler used all media to destroy the dreams and bodies of more than 30 million persons.
•••• When in 1946 seven industryites in communications joined me in founding the "first generation" of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, we didn't foresee that in 43 years we would get the recognition that the "third generation" TV Academy has today,
••••We weren't naïve, for since Jan. 6, 1884, the first TV system had already been patented. For those 62 years world leaders had already visualized the impact of the moving image of television on society. The problems in America was not when, but who would control the new technology.
••••Last week when ABC's former chairman, Leonard Goldenson, gave the Academy Foundation $1 million the "first generation,' we founders, knew that we had arrived. Elton Rule, former ABC president, is president of the foundation. Delbert Mann, a Burnside Avenue resident, is a member of the foundation.
••••From 1949, when ATAS brought forth the Emmy, the "third generation" Academy, the present one, reorganized in 1977, owned a little figure worth $1.5 million. That's the price the network now pay to broadcast the awards. But over the 43 years of ATAS history there have been many problems. Though we in ATAS, in 1949, did not copyright the Emmy, wed did protect it.
••••At lunch last week with Karl Malden and other film Academy moguls, I heard their problem of copyrights. Owners of the Oscars wanted to sell them at auction. But a clause in the contract provided that the Academy should have first choice in buying back an unwanted Oscar.
••••We, in the TV Academy, back in 1949, had that same clause for our trophy. But when New York and Hollywood were fighting over a personnel problem of aid presidents, employees of the Academy, the problem of copyright ownership of the Emmy was a part of a $100 million suit.
••••Believe me, if I had known of the million dollar goldmine which TV brought to our little "first generation" Academy, I would have hired some of those $100,000 attorneys, too. We could have protected the growth of ATAS in a more dignified method. We wouldn't have "three generations."
••••Watching all these goings on over 43 years, I had a point of view. If any power group in this huge organization wanted me to take sides, they would have to ay. One president wanted to know who owned the Emmy. Was there any agreement, etc.? I told them if they would pay me $2,000 for the history I would hire someone to write it with me. Lionel Rolfe and Nigey Lennon obliged. Printing costs were billed to ATAS.
••••But the slick attorneys slipped me a "mickey." That's a good old New York talk for a pill. They demanded that I leave my archives about the Academy to them, when I died. Strangely enough because I was abut to move, I donated all that material to ATAS/UCLA and thy picked it up in three van loads. Everything pertaining to NATAS.
••••Two weeks ago, the new resident of ATAS wanted to know what I did with the $2,000 and the Archives. In the haste of takeover by the "third generation," no once know that they had my donation already.
••••Because there are three generations of the Academy, each of the latter two calling themselves the "new" Academy, undoubtedly when the foundation selects people for the Hall of Fame, no one will be around to know that back in 1946, her was a "founder."
••••As Fred Sage, the fine actor in the "Wonder Years" notes, each generation has their own heroes.

• 107- Syd Cassyd, Remembered
Hollywood - (February 2024 ) Syd Cassyd was the Founder of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
••• Cassyd worked for the Army Signal Corps as a film editor under then-Col. Frank Capra during World War II. After the war, Cassyd moved to Hollywood, where he worked as an editor for Box Office magazine, as well as a grip at Paramount Pictures.
••• It was at Paramount that he met and teamed up with Klaus Landsberg, known for, among other things, pioneering live TV news coverage. Cassyd and Landsberg worked on an experimental Los Angeles television station that would eventually become KTLA-TV Channel 5.
•••While at KTLA, Cassyd felt that TV needed an organization in which people could share their ideas about the fledgling medium and talk about the future of the industry. He founded the academy with seven people who came to the first meeting. By the fifth meeting, there were 250 members.
•••Syd Cassyd founded the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in 1946, which has grown into one of the most influential organizations in the entertainment industry. In addition to sponsoring the annual Emmy Awards, which recognize outstanding entertainment and news achievement in television, the academy has a variety of outreach and archival programs.
•••Cassyd became the fourth president of the Academy in 1950 and over the years held various other positions. In 1991, the Academy's Board of Governors created the Syd Cassyd Founder's Award in his honor and presented the first to him.
•••In 1996, Cassyd received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
•••Cassyd died February 4, 2000, in Los Angeles, California. He was 91.

The history of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) dates to the earliest days of the television industry itself. When Syd Cassyd, its founder, first conceived of the organization, he envisioned a serious forum where all aspects and concerns of the fledgling medium could be discussed. Flash and glamor were of no interest to Cassyd. Indeed, for years he refused to even consider the notion of handing out awards.

"He thought television was a really wonderful tool for education," recalled his daughter, Donna Cassyd. "He used to make us watch shows like Omnibus, with Alistair Cook."

Fortunately for Cassyd and the other founders of the Television Academy, the organization eventually became both a place for serious discussion as well as a place to celebrate the industry's finest achievements with its annual Emmy Awards ceremonies.

101-SAG-AFTRA TV ANIMATION AGREEMENTS GO TO MEMBERS FOR RATIFICATION
LOS ANGELES (Mar. 1, 2024) -- The SAG-AFTRA 2023 Television Animation Agreements have been approved by the SAG-AFTRA Executive Committee, and the agreements will now be sent to members for ratification. The three-year contracts benefited from gains made to the TV/Theatrical Contract after the 118-day strike, particularly in the area of artificial intelligence protections.

"We were able to ride the wave of our strike victory to secure a better deal for members. That momentum paid off in terms of substantial wage increases, more than $3 million in back pay, two new holidays and the first SAG-AFTRA animation voiceover contract with artificial intelligence protections and gains," said SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland. 

"Thank you to Negotiating Committee Co-Chairs Bob Bergen and David Jolliffe, who secured a top-tier deal for members. Notably, I appreciate that we have enshrined in the contract what all members know: that a voice actor must be human. This contract builds on what we were able to achieve in live action to offer additional protections and gains in artificial intelligence that meet the specific needs of our dynamic voiceover community. Now, more than ever, doing voiceover work without a union contract is playing with fire," said SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher.

We built on the gains of the TV/Theatrical agreement to secure improved protections for Animation actors, without a strike. Among the highlights of the contract are: 

• Specific language acknowledging that the term "voice actors" includes only humans and that acknowledges the importance of human voice acting.

• Retroactivity with salary increases: A pattern-busting 7% wage increase applies retroactively to July 1, 2023. That's worth over $3 million dollars in instant gains for the members.

• Substantial artificial intelligence protections and gains for voice actors: 

? Removed the requirement that a digital replica must exclusively sound like the recognizable natural voice of an actor in order to be protected. 

? "Employment-based digital replicas," need only be recognized and identifiable via contracts and other regular business documents, confirming that it was in fact the performer's voice used to make the replica.  

? "Independently created digital replicas" need only sound like the "character voice" from which the replica was created. 

? Confirmation that if the voice actor's performance is digitally altered into a foreign language, the voice actor shall be eligible for residuals based on the distribution of the foreign language version.

? When prompting a generative artificial intelligence system with a performer name or names, consent of those performers is required. We have removed the requirement, which exists in live action, that a "major facial feature" be included in the prompt with no substitute for that criterion.

? We have established regular, mandatory artificial intelligence meetings with producers, which will include discussion of methods and systems to track the use of digital replicas. 

• We were able to keep the High Budget SVOD threshold for Animated projects at its lower-than-live-action level, and we made the same significant improvements to the formula that were achieved in live action.

• Further reducing the producer's ability to "freely bargain" with voice actors for compensation below union minimums on certain made-for-new-media animated programs. 

• Actors who perform improvised lines in the nature of "omnies" will be treated as principal performers with applicable residuals, meaning all new TV/basic cable animation productions moving forward are prohibited from using this omni contract for looping.

• Achieves Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and Juneteenth as contractual holidays with retroactive holiday pay for anyone who worked on the recent MLK Day.

• Upon request, the producer must provide sheet music, if it is available, for a voice actor required to sing.

• We are implementing a system to improve a series of outstanding compliance issues including late payment, recoupment of overpaid residuals, providing voice actors with executed copies of their contracts, and informing voice actors and their representatives at the time of an offer whether the animated program qualifies for "high budget" terms, including application of scale.

The Executive Committee, on behalf of the SAG-AFTRA National Board, is recommending a "yes" vote.

Members will now be asked to ratify the contracts. Postcards were mailed today to all eligible affected members. The postcards contain instructions on how to vote online or, for members who do not wish to vote online, instructions on how to request a paper ballot.  

Prior to the voting deadline of 5 p.m. PDT, Friday, March 22, 2024, two online informational meetings will take place on March 7 to familiarize members with the contract provisions and answer questions. Visit sagaftra.org/tvanimation for details.

SAG-AFTRA 2020 Television Animation Agreements expired last year, but were extended due to the TV/Theatrical/Streaming Strike, with negotiations scheduled for February. LOS ANGELES (Feb. 26, 2024) - SAG-AFTRA is pleased to confirm that earlier today a representative of our union monitored the return of several boxes containing Catherine Herridge's reporting materials from her CBS News office in Washington D.C. Herridge is currently reviewing the materials. 

We welcome CBS News' reversal which came after SAG-AFTRA's intervention and widespread media coverage that underscored shared concerns about press freedom and the First Amendment.

The resolution of this matter sends a strong message of protection for basic First Amendment principles. We further hope the public focus now turns to SAG-AFTRA's continued efforts to support a Press Shield law that provides additional federal protections for journalists and their confidential sources.

• 101- PBS SoCal Rebrands KCET Broadcast Channel as 'PBS SoCal Plus' - TVIMagazine
Los Angeles (Feburyary 2, 2024) - KCET and local Southern California PBS stations are set to be consolidated into one name: PBS SoCal.
••••The broadcaster noted that KCET programming will not be impacted.
•••• Though the Los Angeles-based public broadcaster KCET will still exist, it will be referred to as "PBS SoCal Plus," so that both PBS flagship broadcast stations will be under one unified brand starting Feb. 6.
•••• "PBS SoCal and KCET merged in 2018, and since then, have grown into a strong public media entity serving Southern California that reflects the diversity of our region and provides a full schedule of beloved and trusted PBS programs," PBS SoCal president and CEO Andrew Russell said in a statement. "While the broadcast channel name may be changing, the programs that viewers love on KCET -- Artbound, Lost LA, Father Brown, Must See Movies and more -- will remain available on the channel and across all of our platforms."
•••• Viewers' favorite programs will also be available to stream on website, pbssocal.org. Local viewers will still be able to watch KCET (now "PBS SoCal Plus") programming on 28.1 while PBS SoCal viewers will continue on 50.1. LOS ANGELES (Feb. 21, 2024) -- SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP have reached a tentative agreement on successor agreements to the 2020 Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists Television Animation Agreement and the 2020 Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists Basic Cable Agreement for Animated Motion Pictures.

Last total solar eclipse for the next 20 years

•••• On April 8, 2024, the contiguous United States will witness its last total solar eclipse for the next 20 years.
•••• The moon's total eclipse shadow will cross the Rio Grande into Texas at 1:25 p.m. Central time and trace an arc through 15 states all the way to Maine before crossing into Canada. The lower 48 states won't see another total solar eclipse until August 2044.
•••While many Americans are lucky enough to live in the direct path of the total eclipse, most will need to travel to see it. We've put together this guide on how you can safely see the eclipse, and how to find spots across the country likely to have the best viewing experience

Eclipse basics
Partial vs. total solar eclipses
•••No matter where they are in the continental U.S., members will see a partial solar eclipse, in which the moon covers some but not all of the sun. Cities that are close to the centerline of the eclipse but outside the path of totality, such as Houston and Cincinnati, will see the sun almost entirely covered. Cities that are farther away will see less coverage. Los Angeles, for example, will only see about half the sun covered at maximum partial eclipse. The partial eclipse lasts a few hours, depending on where it's viewed.
•••Members who live in or travel to a narrow strip that stretches from the Rio Grande Valley in Texas across South, Midwest, and Northern New England will see a total solar eclipse, meaning the sun will be 100% covered by the moon--an event referred to as "totality."
•••Though the total eclipse will only last a few minutes at each location, it's the most spectacular part of the event: stars are visible during the day, and it's the only time the sun's corona is visible to the naked eye. 

Safe viewing
•••Proper eye protection is necessary to view a partial solar eclipse; even when partially covered, the sun can still cause serious eye damage. Regular sunglasses aren't enough, either--those who plan to look directly at the partial eclipse should plan ahead and buy specialized eclipse viewers that use appropriate solar-filtering material.
•••Another tried-and-true method is to make a simple pinhole camera by poking a hole in a sheet of paper and letting the sun project through it onto another surface.
•••AAA TIP: Many eclipse events have eclipse glasses and other viewers available, either for free or for purchase, but it's always possible they'll run out. Getting your viewers ahead of time ensures you won't be left out.  
•••Eye protection isn't necessary during the brief total solar eclipse since the sun is completely obscured. However, viewers should take caution to ensure that the total eclipse has truly begun before removing protective eye gear, and be sure to put it back on immediately as soon as the total eclipse transitions back into a partial eclipse. 

Where to see the 2024 eclipse
There are many considerations when deciding where to go to view an eclipse.

• ••••All else equal, lower elevations are better than higher ones, as they are less likely to develop cloud cover.

• •••••Check weather forecasts starting a few days before the eclipse. Cloud cover and rainy weather are very common across much of the U.S. in early April. If cloud cover is reliably predicted for your viewing spot, look for another spot with better odds of clear skies.

• •••••Because the moon's shadow is a circle, viewing spots closer to the centerline of the eclipse path will see longer total eclipses. In Ohio, Toledo is on the edge of totality and will only see 1 minute and 53 seconds of total eclipse. Viewers willing to travel an hour southeast to Sandusky, however, will see a total eclipse that lasts twice as long: 3 minutes and 46 seconds.

• •••••Public gathering places such as parks and observatories will be crowded the day of the eclipse. Arrive early or seek an out-of-the-way venue instead. Expect traffic after the eclipse, too, as many viewers try to leave at once.

• 106- FCC to consider new outage-reporting rules, soliciting comments on FirstNet, deployable usage - By Donny Jackson
Washington DC (12th January 2024 - FCC commissioners are scheduled to consider new rules regarding the Disaster Information Reporting System (DIRS) and the Network Outage Reporting System (NORS), as well as a proposal seeking comments whether FirstNet should have reporting obligations and whether deployable coverage should be reported.
•••• Under the proposed new rules, all cable, wireless, wireline and interconnected voice-over-IP (VoIP) providers would be required to report outages when the DIRS is activated and must provide the FCC with a final report within 24 hours of DIRS being deactivated. The proposed rules also would suspend NORS reporting obligations for providers subject to DIRS, according to the FCC.
•••In the further notice, the FCC seeks comments whether FirstNet should be subject to NORS and/DIRS reporting. FirstNet currently is not required to file such outage reports, but its nationwide contractor--AT&T--does have to fulfill these obligations. The further notice also asks whether commenters believe "mobile recovery assets"--for example, deployable coverage solutions like cells on wheels (COWs) and cells on light trucks (COLTs)--should be noted in coverage assessments for NORS and DIRS.
•••In addition, the further notice proposes that DIRS reporting obligations be expanded to include broadcast, satellite and broadband providers.
•••FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel noted the proposed rules and a further notice of proposed rulemaking in a blog she released last week outlining the preliminary agenda items for the Jan. 25 open meeting.
•••"Fast and reliable reporting of communications outages during disasters can help emergency-management personnel make smarter and faster decisions when they matter most," according to Rosenworcel. "It can also offer valuable lessons to prevent service disruptions in the future.
•••"The Commission will consider rules to transition the current voluntary outage reporting structure to a mandatory structure for certain communications providers, as well as proposals to expand reporting from other providers."
•••Adopted in 2007, the DIRS reporting of commercial network outages has proven to be a useful tool to help the public gauge carriers' progress in restoring terrestrial communications networks to "normal" status after a disaster. However, many industry observers have questioned whether the daily DIRS maps may create an overly negative perception about wireless coverage in a given geographic area, because it does not reflect whether service providers have provided connectivity through deployable solutions like SatCOLTs in an area.
•••"We tentatively conclude that, if information regarding the location of mobile recovery assets were required to be supplied in DIRS, the Commission would obtain this information more efficiently and uniformly across providers than is currently the case, likely leading to better public safety outcomes," according to the FCC's draft further notice. "We seek comment on this conclusion. Should we require such reporting? If so, which subject providers should be required to provide such information?
•••"If reporting is adopted, we seek comment on what types of mobile assets should be reported (including COWs and COLTs) based on provider type, the level of granularity for which location information should be reported (e.g., on a zip code or street address basis) and on whether this information should be reported directly in existing DIRS forms or through other means. Should information on the time of deployment, coverage, or available power for such assets be reported as well?"
•••A potential wrinkle to the relevance of NORS and DIRS reporting is the expected development of satellite-direct-to-phone (Sat2Phone) technology that leverages low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites as cellular towers in space. If deployed as designed in cooperation with a carrier&emdash;the business model being pursued by companies like AST SpaceMobile, Lynk and SpaceX&emdash;Sat2Phone could provide seamless coverage to users outside a terrestrial-network coverage footprint in virtually all outdoor locations within the next several years.
•••Commercial wireless carriers have provided the FCC with network-outage information for years, but the requirement has not been extended to the FirstNet Authority's nationwide public-safety broadband network (NPSBN). The NPSBN is being built and maintained by AT&T, which is subject to NORS and DIRS requirements, which has allowed some officials to make inferences about the health of the terrestrial FirstNet system, according to the language in the proposed further notice.
•••"FirstNet is not currently subject to NORS or DIRS outage-reporting obligations and has never participated in NORS or DIRS on a voluntary basis," according to the further-notice draft.
•••"However, its importance to the public-safety community and the unique customer base it serves leads us to consider whether outage reporting is necessary and appropriate to provide a more complete picture of the overall health and resiliency of an increasingly important component of the nation's communications infrastructure, particularly during specific disasters during which FirstNet is specifically designed to provide more robust outcomes."
•••One question noted in the further-notice draft is whether the FCC has the authority to require such network-outage reporting from the FirstNet Authority, which was established by Congress in 2012 with statutory reporting requirements. This law mandated that the FCC grant the FirstNet Authority a license to the 20 MHz block of Band 14 spectrum in the 700 MHz band, but the FirstNet Authority is housed within the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) branch of the federal government.
•••"Do the Commission's general Title III authorities, coupled with section 6003(a) of the Public Safety Spectrum Act, support our ability to seek information beyond FirstNet's statutorily mandated reports?" the further-notice draft asks. "What other provisions might support such reporting? What quantitative estimates of potential costs and benefits of this integration are available? What would be additional improvements to public safety and other measures of welfare due to specifically reporting by FirstNet? How would the magnitude of these benefits compare to the benefits estimated in the Second Report and Order?"

•••• This new agreement paves the way for professional voice over artists to safely explore new employment opportunities for their digital voice replicas with industry-leading protections tailored to AI technology, allowing AAA video game studios and other companies working with Replica to access top SAG-AFTRA talent. 
•••• The agreement between the leading AI voice company and the world's largest performers' union will enable Replica to engage SAG-AFTRA members under a fair, ethical agreement to safely create and license a digital replica of their voice. Licensed voices can be used in video game development and other interactive media projects from pre-production to final release.
•••• Approved by affected members of the union's voiceover performer community, this contract marks an important step towards the ethical use of AI voices in creative projects by game developers, and sets the basis for fair and equitable employment of voice actors as they explore the new revenue opportunities provided by AI. In addition to establishing minimum terms and conditions, the agreement ensures performer consent and negotiation for uses of their digital voice double and requires that performers have the opportunity to opt out of its continued use in new works.

•••• As the industry comes out from under the cloud of two overlapping strikes lasting six months and the long tail of COVID-19, while bracing for a meager 2024 release calendar, the business of movies could certainly use the cheerleading that a healthy awards season is supposed to provide.
••• Ratings for the Globes, this year, were up.
••••The show drew an average of 9.4 million viewers, a 50% jump from last year's telecast on NBC, no doubt benefiting from an NFL game as a lead-in, in addition to having plenty of celebrities in attendance and popular movies in contention. In the pre-pandemic year of 2019, the Globes had more than twice that many viewers, reaching about 19 million.

The 81st Golden Globe Awards will honor the best in film and American television of 2023. The ceremony will be held on January 7, 2024, from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, produced by Dick Clark Productions, Ricky Kirshner, and Glenn Weiss; the latter will also serve as director.
•••• Feminist "Barbie," played by Greta Gerwig that traces its origins to toy store shelves, dominated nominations for the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. With 10 nods it makes the movie the second most-nominated (Cabaret) in the 81-year history of the show.
•••• "Barbie" was followed closely by "Oppenheimer," Christopher Nolan's look at J. Robert Oppenheimer and the development of the atomic bomb, which tallied eight nominations. "Oppenheimer" was released on the same weekend as "Barbie," a rare confluence of blockbusters that inspired memes and, later,  Halloween costumes, while boosting the box office. 
•••• Unlike the Oscars, the Globes honor the best of both film and television and steer clear of recognizing excellence in most below-the-line crafts like editing or cinematography. They also distinguish between film genres, recognizing the best comedies and musicals separately from the best dramas. Thus, "Oppenheimer" will compete for the top drama prize alongside "Killers of the Flower Moon," "Maestro," "Anatomy of a Fall," "The Zone of Interest" and "Past Lives." The ceremony will also be available to stream on Paramount+ and the CBS app. Paramount Global is the parent company of CBS. The Official Golden Globe 2024 afterparty will be hosted by Billboard.
•••• The Golden Globes come to CBS after its longstanding relationship with NBC ended, and as the award show works to rebuild its credibility under new leadership following a widely publicized scandal and boycotts over allegations of racism and ethical lapses within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which organized the Globes and voted for years to determine its nominees and winners. CBS is hosting the Golden Globes live in 2024, CBS Entertainment announced in a statement on Friday, Nov. 17.
•••• CBS will air the three-hour award show extravaganza live on the network on Sunday, Jan. 7, starting at 5 p.m. Pacific Time (8 p.m. Eastern Time) following an NFL football doubleheader. The show will stream on Paramount+ and the CBS app as part of a "new deal between the Network and the Golden Globes."

•••• Many stars and studios boycotted the show, long known for its boozy dinner-party atmosphere, as other allegations of ethical improprieties surfaced in the then Hollywood Foreign Press Association-owned award ceremony. 
•••• The Golden Globes returned to NBC for the 2023 broadcast in a one-year deal -- a make-or-break moment after the HFPA sold the award show to Todd Boehly's Eldridge Industries, dissolving the nonprofit and its membership, earlier in the year. 
•••• The firm, which owns Dick Clark Productions, which produces the Globes, and the Beverly Hilton, the award show's longtime home, turned the show into a for-profit venture.

• THEY TOLD HIM TO BE QUIET - by Adria Manary Adams
When the government tells you to be quiet, alarm signals should go off in your brain. Only a chosen few know the full extent of its power, and my uncle, Elwin Laurence Peterson, regrettably found out the hard way.

During World War II, he worked at the Washington D.C. Navy Yard in the optics and machine shop. While there, he received several awards for his contributions to the war effort. One concern that he became acutely aware of, was the difficulty that all facets of the military were experiencing in communications. Methods of transmitting vital information to and from ships, submarines, airplanes and troops on the ground had become increasingly problematic since the Germans were intercepting and/or scrambling our signals. In exploring the situation, Elwin realized that varying the frequencies on which the messages were sent would disable the enemy from capturing our communications. Since frequency variation was a prominent component of a television system that he had conceived of in the late 1920's, and patented in 1928, he suggested that the government use this significant piece of his "Transmitting System and Apparatus," patent number 1,747,791.

He absolutely believed that this method would provide clear, secured and unencumbered communication in military operations, thus saving many American soldiers.

After explaining how FM would benefit the Navy to the manager of his department, his
suggestion made its way up the ranks. In handwritten notes written by my uncle in 1945, he states:

"I was interviewed several times by various officers and engineers. At one of these interviews, a man who worked for Edwin Armstrong was in attendance. He had been called in because of his claim that Armstrong (now a Major in the Signal Corps), had been working on variations of wavelengths since 1931. At that point I informed the officers that I was well aware of his efforts, because I had demonstrated my version to Mr. Armstrong back in

1929 and again in 1930, when Bell Telephone and the Postal Telegraph Company had requested his opinion of my invention."

What Mr. Peterson did not mention in this meeting was that after seeing these demonstrations, Edwin Armstrong later used what he saw to further his efforts in transmission technology, which eventually helped him to become who many refer to as the "Father of Radio". If Armstrong was to be given this title, then Elwin Peterson should have been credited for being the "Grandfather of Radio". (The Armstrong patent was filed in 1933. Peterson's patent was submitted in 1928, five years earlier, and finalized in 1930, three years before Mr. Armstrong's.)

Norman Lear, TV Legend and creator of 'All in the Family' dies at 101
LOS ANGELES (December 6, 2023) -- SAG-AFTRA today honors the legacy of iconic writer-producer and SAG-AFTRA member Norman Lear, a television institution, who died Tuesday at age 101.
•••• SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher said, "I grew up watching Norman Lear sitcoms that made me think and question so much about the way we look and feel about a myriad of topics that were never a part of comedy. He took real issues and made them a part of sitcom families, and he showed life as it was. Not white-washed, not oppressed, but real, for young people, for women, for people of color, for people with and without money.

• The first time I worked for him, the first day of the reading of the script, I was late and I was so nervous. I walked into the room, everybody was sitting around the table, and I said, 'I'm so sorry that I'm late,' and Norman said, 'That's ok, anyone that can look that good at this hour of the morning deserves to be late,' and I never forgot his generosity and his brilliant need to elevate people and to think differently with a greater capacity for understanding each other. I saw him as recently as one year ago when I was being honored at the Hollywood Museum and he was presenting. We sat together and talked about so many things. I marveled at how sharp his mind still was even at a few months shy of 100 years old. He was a great man, a great producer, and a great American who will be greatly missed but long remembered."

• SAG-AFTRA Statement to Members Regarding End of Historic TV/Theatrical/Streaming Strike

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 9 -- SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher and SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator sent the following message to members today: 

We did it! Our historic TV/Theatrical/Streaming strike is over as of 12:01 AM this morning. After 118 days on strike, we are set to change the future of our industry with a transformative contract that includes gains for every category of SAG-AFTRA member who works this contract. 

This revolutionary agreement achieves major breakthroughs in addressing compensation via residuals and protections from generative artificial intelligence technology while reaffirming the role human performers play in the production of film, television, and streaming entertainment.

Tomorrow, the National Board will meet to review the tentative agreement and vote on whether or not to send it to you, the membership, for a ratification vote. 

Although full details will not be shared in advance of tomorrow's meeting, we wanted to share just a few key deal points: 

• More than one billion dollars in new wages and benefit plan funding;
• A streaming participation bonus;
• Minimum compensation increases that break the so-called "industry pattern;" 
• For the first time, consent and compensation guardrails on the use of AI;
• Raised Pension & Health caps that will channel more value into our funds; and 
• Critical protections for diverse communities.

We're proud of the phenomenal efforts of our TV/Theatrical Negotiating Committee, and send our sincerest thanks to you -- the members -- who made these gains possible by granting a strike authorization prior to negotiations, and remaining resolved throughout the 118 days of our strike. Your solidarity helped us achieve the necessary leverage to secure these unprecedented gains.

We're also grateful to our union siblings who stood by our side -- literally and figuratively -- from the very beginning. We truly could not have succeeded without your unwavering support. 

Effective immediately, all SAG-AFTRA members should fulfill their contractual obligations and return to work. Members and influencers may resume services relating to publicity and the promotion of motion pictures produced under the CBA and Television Agreement, without consequence or conflict with the union.

•••• In Life's current Bicentennial issue, radio checks in, at #86 on the hot "100 Events That Shaped America," 19 buttons behind Bell's telephone. Erroneously, Life lists Guglielmo Marcon's dots and dashes as the first wireless broadcast, a fable echoed by the World Almanac and Encyclopedia Britannica. It's a forgivable mumpsimus, since the evidence offered on the following pages has not, until now, appeared in any national publication.
•••• The birth of broadcasting is a bizarre soap opera saga, a lacrymal legend of mystery, machination, ephemeral enshrinement, decline, disillusionment and disaster. It's denouncement dissolves six miles north of Murray, Kentucky, in a two-room shanty constructed of pine and cornstalks, where radio's uncelebrated architect is discovered 48 hours after his death, his records scattered, his equipment destroyed, his brain partly eaten by rats. Even local radio fails to mention his demise. He is Nathan Beverly Stubblefield, the man history over-heard and then overlooked.

Rice died May 19, 2022 at the age of 81 in Daytona Beach, Florida
••• He grew up in the mountains of North Carolina, and fell in love with the beaches of Florida on a childhood visit. He made his home in Daytona Beach, where he worked as a high school chemistry teacher and part-time lifeguard.
••• It was at his part-time job that Rice was inspired by seeing people all over the beach using Coppertone suntan lotion. He became determined to create a unique competitor, using his chemistry knowledge to experiment with a suntan lotion formula, scented with coconut and fruit.
••• He famously mixed his first formula in a garbage can, bottling it at home in his garage with a $500 loan from his father to launch his business. He named it Hawaiian Tropic to evoke an exotic beach locale.
••• His experiment was a hit making him a multi-millionaire, with his Hawaiian Tropic suncare brand creating sales of $110 million per year.
••• Ricewith his Hawaiian Tropic brand became known for sponsoring beauty pageants and NASCAR racecars.
••• In 2004 he accompanied Troy Cory to a concert tour through China.
•••After selling Hawaiian Tropic to Playtex in 2007, Rice returned to the industry in recent years with the suncare brand Habana Brisa.

• 114- Scott B. Whitenack-Stubblefield Esq., great-grand son of wireless telephone inventor, Nathan B. Stubblefield, died - By Troy Cory
Scott Bryan Whitenack passed away untimely on September 18, in Los Angeles, CA.
•••• Scott, aka Scott Stubblefield, was one of four children with siblings, Alden, Keith, and Priscilla. (His brother Keith pre-ceded him in death at the age of 32). His parents were Troy Cory Stubblefield, an entertainer and author and Dorothy Swafford, owner of a furniture and antiques retail store. Scott's children are Steven, David and grand-children, William, Bruce, Cora and Max, borne to Steven and Skylark. Scott's great-grandfather is Nathan B. Stubblefield, the inventor of Radio, in 1882, and patent holder of the wireless telephone (1908) and his great-great-great .... grandparents were - John and Priscilla Alden who were part of the pilgrimage who sailed on the Mayflower to Plymouth Rock from England in 1620.

During the time he studied for the State Bar, Scott lived with Josie and myself on our family estate in Pasadena. He passed the State Bar the first time and was among only 33% to do so.
The balance of time was spent doing cinematography for my TV shows, which he considered an artistic outlet besides his major life's work, in the field of law. After he passed the State Bar he handled numerous legal cases and ended up working as an associate lawyer with Melvin Belli with whom he engaged in several cases and won a lawsuit that became precedent case law. Whitenack was committed to his legal profession for over three decades.•
r••• If you needed legal advice or help with a motion filing, Scott was there with his trusty law books. He was very intelligent, outspoken and an independent thinker.
•••• He also was a family man, who loved hiking and scuba diving, a good game of tennis and enjoyed bringing his sons to Paramount Ranch for regular family outings and Father's Day get-togethers.
•••• As to his love for cinematography he videotaped additional segments for the movie "Christmas around the World." Scott later became my producer and cinematographer for "To Catch a Dream" filmed in Europe. The video project brought him and the production team to Paris, Venice, Cannes, Munich and Salzburg. Said footage with perfect picture-book pans of the Eiffel Tower, the Seine River, the leaning Tower of Pisa and the Venice Bridge of Sigh, is a legacy he left behind for us.
•••• In the early 90s during the writing of our 4-volume set of books entitled "the SMART-DAAF Boys" about the invention of radio and the the wireless telephone, Scott lent a helpful hand in giving his legal aspect of his great-grandfather Nathan Stubblefield's copyrighted and patented invention. He also was the co-author of "Bank America, the Tortfeasor." •

••••• He leaves behind his father, Troy Cory-Stubblefield, his mother Dorothy Steele, sister Priscilla Stubblefield Cory, brother and sister-in-law Alden and Sara Stubblefield, step mother Josie Cory-Stubblefield, sons David and Steven, daughter-in law Skylar, and great-grandchildren, William, Bruce, Cora and Max; Nephew Ryan White, and niece Jenny Wharton. His brother Keith pre-ceded him in death at the age of 32.
