Qiu Ying • [Ch'iu Ying; • zi • Shifu; • hao • Shizhou]
-----(b Taicang, Jiangsu Province, ?1494 - d c. 1552). Chinese painter. Chinese historical writings refer to Qiu as one of the Four Great Masters of the Ming period (1368 -1644), along with Shen Zhou, Wen Zhengming and Tang Yin. He was certainly the most versatile of the four. He was born into a humble family and studied painting with Zhou Chen in the literary and cultural city of Suzhou, centre of the Wu school of painting. He lived and worked on the fringes of scholarly Suzhou society. His livelihood depended solely upon his skill in satisfying the tastes and demands of his patrons. He was, however, more fortunate than other commercial artists in having three art collectors as patrons, with each of whom he stayed for several years. One was Chen Guan from Suzhou. The other two were both younger than Qiu: Zhou Fenglai (1523 - 55), from nearby Kunshan, and the well-known wealthy collector Xiang Yuanbian, whose home was in Jiaxing in Zhejiang Province.

Home market

Chinese Court Art andFan History & Glossary

----- Authentic information about Chinese mentality, fine appreciation of local life beliefs - imaginative assets - nature and landscapes are obtained by the study of Chinese fans made for the home market, rather than those for export.
-----From round hand screens to folding fans, the innumerable ivory brisés to palace fans, from those woven to pieces created in jade or ivory, waxed paper, pith or silk leaves, all the fans, along with their utilitarian roles, reveal a potted history or lessons in religion. Knowledge in art has transcendental implications as the Taoist artists established linear representations of change, movement and energy; they fixed the framework for yin and yang in art. They, through moral (té) rather than physical force (li), nurtured a mellow and easygoing type of life-style, thereby integrating without effort the Buddhist belief in the impermanence of the world.
----- Searching for nirvana, they understood that growth means effort, that happiness is the beginning and that one often looks for what one has never lost.
----- In painting, a work of art is considered not only to representing nature, but is itself a work of nature. The very technique involves the art of artlessness.
-----Calligraphy, poetry, design, the dance of brushes on paper and the chef-d'oeuvre is here. Arts and crafts reached their zenith in the Ming (1368 -1644) and Qing dynasties (I644 -1911).
----- The court painters Qin Ying and Lan Ying created homogeneous archaic works in an academic style, similar to those of Wang Xie from the Zhe school in Hangzhou.
----- They produce monochrome paintings in ink completely different from those of the "literati" artists from Suzhou Wu school.
----- Through intuition, Shen Zhou, Wen Zhangrning and their disciples tried to reveal the hidden face of reality with practical dimension and virtuosity, and initiated a symbolic, spontaneous and improvised form of art.
----- Later on, fresh schools with new representatives tried to copy the ancients, to paint "in the manner of" (Fang), in order to separate art from nature and vice versa.
----- Trade flourished during the Ming dynasty but from 1729 foreigners were confined to the Canton region only.
----- The Asian derived subjects embrassed by the Occidental art, gave birth to "chinoiserie" objects, but strangely enough the purely Occi- dental subjects were reimported to China (yang shi), redesigned and widely re-exported.

• 107 - Arts & Science: This section features Entertainment news, and Media Reviews of Books, DVDs, Movies, Music, Theater and Television Programing. Who said that Sports, Courts and Wrestling were part of the entertainment world, and that the cost of entertainment and its artful antiquates will double in price for the consumer, because of multilevel distribution and Hollywood's war on consumer electronics manufacturers. TVI's insight into the Arts & Sciences, answer most questions, except for one! What name will Hollywood give to the reform school where they're going to hold all of the young computer hackers, -- for accidentally discovering movieland's secrets. It didn't take long for members of congress to realize that it was Hollywood's movie and music associations that were intentionally manipulating the worlds movie/music markets by withholding product from consumers to create high prices?
Today's Puzzle: Where are all of the millions of recycled movies and TV programs stored, and who collects and pays the royalties to the performers when the programs lie dormant? We Preserve The Moments.
