STATEMENT: To serve as the definitive source for
information about the consumer electronics
industry. The analog to digital television (DTV)
transition is going strong. TV manufacturers are
still leading the DTV charge, offering more than
300 models of DTV products including integrated
sets, digital monitors and set-top receivers at
affordable prices. CEA research shows a remarkable
level of satisfaction with the product with, as
expected, the biggest disappointment being the
relative dearth of HDTV programming. We're making
progress in the transition, but we still have
hurdles to overcome. The Federal Communication Commission's
expressed goals for digital television (DTV) are:
"to preserve and promote free, universally
available, local broadcast television in a digital
world" and "to promote spectrum efficiency and
rapid recovery of spectrum by fostering the swift
development of DTV." In order to meet those goals and for consumers
to realize the promise of DTV, several outstanding
policy issues must be resolved. Among these issues are intellectual property
rights, cable DTV must carry and, cable
interoperability. CEA is working with government
and related industries to address these issues and
to create solutions that will avoid marketplace
confusion and needless delay - bringing the
enhanced performance and services found in digital
television to consumers as soon as possible. CEA has led in the effort to promote HDTV to
consumers, as well, via viewing parties for major
DTV broadcasts such as the SuperBowl and the NCAA
men's basketball championships; DTV displays at
design shows that allow consumers to see the latest
DTV products in a home theater environment; and the
DTV promotional campaign with the National
Association of Broadcasters (NAB), which will be
launched in January 2002. Go To www.ca.org to browse through the DTV
Guide to learn more about this exciting
transition.
