As in previous years the Pflaums Posthotel Pegnitz housed the many prominent from the world of business, politics and television. Fanfares announced the host of the Festspiele.
The arrival of the guests resembled a fashion show, with the men dressed mostly in simple, dark suits and tie or bowtie. The woman however, showed more creativity in their choice of dress. From elegant to extravagant, from buttoned-up to sexy. This year's favorite shades were silver, lilac, cream or just simple black.
Honored guests were President Horst Koehler and wife Eva, Angela Merkel, candidate for chancelor, and her husband, Joachim Sauer, Ex-foreign minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher, former president Walter Scheel, former president Richard von Weizsaecker, Bavaria's Secretary of the Interior, Guenter Beckstein and Governor of Bavaria, Edmund Stoiber and wife Karin. Other prominent guests included EU vice president Guenter Verheugen, Justice Minister Brigitte Zypries, FDP-Chef Guido Westerwelle, environmental secretary Werner Schnappauf with daughter Marie-Terese, Thomas Gottschalk and his wife Thea, Countess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis, Margot Werner, and many more.

Wolfgang Wagner (b. 1919) is the son of Siegfried Wagner, the grandson of Richard Wagner and the great-grandson of Franz Liszt. He is currently the director (Festspielleiter) of the Bayreuth Festspiele, a position he assumed alongside his brother Wieland in 1951. Wolfgang and Wieland Wagner are largely credited with resurrecting the famous festival following Germany's collapse after the Second World War. Under his directorship, the famous Bayreuth Festspielhaus has undergone extensive renovations.
Known for his more modern, minimalist stagings of his grandfather's works, Wagner has attracted some criticism for what is seen as his autocratic sway over the Festival. Nonetheless, he has helped make the Bayreuth one of the most popular destination in the world of opera. There is a ten-year waiting list for tickets.
In 1994, he invited Werner Herzog (who had staged Lohengrin at Bayreuth in 1987) to make a documentary about the Festival, which was released under the title "Die Verwandlung der Welt in Musik". (The Transformation of the World into Music)
