The
content-rich programme with full 4K projection,

colourful and vivid way."
Other companies presenting extracts of new Ultra HD

A h h h .
. . Spring in Cannes
where mild breezes
blow as the warm Mediterranean sun smiles over this
beautiful spot on the Cote d'Azur. There you can
feel a timeless sensuality, assuaging a nostalgia
for the Mediterranean which since as far back as
the 16th century has been a constant theme in many
a Northern European's
life.
"Now give us lands where the olives grow,"
Cried the North to the South, "Where the sun with a
golden mouth can blow blue bubbles of grapes down
the vineyard row!" Cried the North to the South.
(to borrow a phrase from the English writer
Elizabeth Barret
Browning).
"Cannes," wrote Charles Lentheric, the
indispensable and erudite historian of maritime
Provence, in 1880, "is a town where you feel no
need to work," and "where the inhabitants were not
interested in the world that lay beyond their shady
gardens, or the sheltered balconies of their
hotels."
Now the world has come to Cannes, chosen it
to be their Mediterranean queen for its annual
events, and when you stroll along the Croisette on
some warm April day you will hardly share Mr.
Lenteric's sentiments. Voila! Cannes! It has
emerged so cosmopolitan. -

Cory's Road to
China>
First American to perform on Stage in China,
PRC.
Troy Cory was among the first international
entertainers and the first American entertainer to
perform in the People's Republic of China,
beginning in 1988. In itself a notable
culture-historical feat, in view of China's closed
door policies of the late 70s and well into the
80s. The PRC's administrative climate in comparison
is much less restrictive now and China's open door
policy enables many entertainers to introduce
themselves to the populace Chinese
audiences.
Cory
Meets JiangZemin, former President
PRC
Back
in the 80s, as a goodwill ambassador representing
the U.S.A., Troy Cory and his back-up dancers and
singers, "The Brooke Sisters," were the first
entertainers from the United States to appear in a
full staged program in the People's Republic of
China during the Shanghai TV Festival, and
televised on China's National Television (CCTV),
viewed by over 300 million
people.
It was there Cory met
Jiang Zemin, then mayor of Shanghai, and who later
became the 5th President of the People's Republic
of
China.
The '88 Shanghai
Concert was the beginnings of Troy's concert tours
in China for the next two decades. The concerts,
just to name a few, included the following cities:
Shanghai, Beijing, Anshan, Harbin, Fuzhou and and
Tsingtao (Qingdao)

The 75-minute musical
tribute to the Gershwins will be performed by
Alexis and the Gershwin Singers & Band under
the musical direction of Steven Applegate.
"It is my privilege to
continue the musical legacy my uncles have left.
Great music should be passed down from
generation to generation like any of life's
precious gifts," said Alexis Gershwin.
Her program of songs in
"Gershwin Sings Gershwin" will include "I've Got a
Crush on You," "Our Love is Here to Stay," and
"Someone to Watch Over Me," to name only a few.

I'll Take Romance" (American Productions Group,
Inc.), as well as a single dance mix, "Alexis
Gershwin -- The Man I Love."
George and Ira Gershwin will
always be remembered as the songwriting team
synonymous with the sounds and style of the Jazz
Age. The two brothers composed scores for
Broadway and Hollywood.
Their now-classic folk
opera, "Porgy and Bess" (co-written with DuBose
Heyward), is constantly revived in opera houses and
theatres throughout the world. Among the
Gershwin brother's treasure trove of songs they
have left us are: "My One and Only," "How Long Has
This Been Going On?," "The Man I Love," "Someone to
Watch Over Me," "A Foggy Day," "Strike Up The

That costly box that funnels cable or satellite
service into your TV might be going the way of the
black rotary-dial telephone -- in the technology
trash bin.
Those boxes soon could face new federal regulations
designed to break the hold of Comcast, Verizon,
DirecTV and other providers on the devices that
millions of Americans depend on to watch TV.
About 99% of the nation's 100 million pay TV
subscribers lease a set-top box, with the average
household paying $231 a year in rental fees,
according to a survey by Sens. Edward Markey
(D-Mass.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.).
Those costs being the reason a growing number of
so-called cord cutters are dropping their
conventional pay TV service and now are streaming
programming over the Internet directly through
smart TVs or via much smaller devices, such as
Chromecast, Roku, and Apple TV, that they can
purchase instead of
rent.
Still, providers like Time Warner Cable Inc, and
others are experimenting with their own customized
apps that would enable customers to ditch the
set-top box and gain access to their programming on
a variety of devices. Pay TV companies are warning
against adding new federal mandates as video
options rapidly evolve.
"There is no quicker way to disrupt this vibrancy
that is creating the greatest TV programming in the
world than for the government to try and fix
something that isn't broken," said Brian Dietz, a
spokesman for the National Cable &
Telecommunications Assn. trade
group.

BERLIN
-- Meryl Streep Wraps up
Berlin Film Festival. The 66-year-old Oscar-winning
actress served on the festival's jury ... During
the festival, she also attended the premiere of the
George Clooney's "Hail, Caesar!"
Meryl Streep and her Berlin
jury have picked the winners of the 66th annual
film fest's Gold and Silver Bears. The most
politically-charged Berlin Film Festival of recent
years came to a head with the awards ceremony for
the winners of the Gold and Silver Bears. Meryl
Streep said of the Golden Bear-winning film "Fire
at Sea" from Gianfranco Rosi:
Three-time Oscar-winner
Streep said her 7-member jury was "swept away" by
Fire at Sea, which she called "urgent, imaginative
and necessary filmmaking." It is a documentary on
the refugee crisis, looking at the island of
Lampadusa in Italy where thousands of refugees have
flooded into Europe. "This is a film that commands
our attention and demands action."
Rosi told reporters after
the awards ceremony late Saturday, February 20,
that he would aim to show the film to the people of
Lampedusa in an open-air screening in the
spring.
The festival had placed a
special spotlight on the refugee issue, after
Germany let in more than 1.1 million asylum seekers
last year.
Donations boxes to support
charities helping torture survivors were placed at
cinema venues, and festival internships and free
tickets were reserved for migrants.
George Clooney, whose Hail,
Caesar! opened the event, even met with German
Chancellor Angela Merkel with his wife Amal "to
talk about how best we can help."

BERLIN
-- The 11-day Berlinale, one
of the top three cinema showcases in Europe along
with Cannes and Venice, got off to a brilliant
start with the opening film Hail, Caesar! - with
directors Joel & Ethan Coen as well as actors
George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, Josh Brolin,
Channing Tatum and Alden Ehrenreich in attendance
&endash; the spectacular list of stars continues:
Pernilla August, Susanne Bier, Daniel Brühl,
Daniel Burman, Isabel Coixet, Doris Dörrie,
Kirsten Dunst, Colin Firth, Greta Gerwig, Brendan
Gleeson, Isabelle Huppert, Julia Jentsch, Denis
Lavant, Jude Law, Spike Lee, Laura Linney, Julianne
Moore, Cynthia Nixon, Guy Pearce, Michael
Peña, Tim Robbins, Gianfranco Rosi, James
Schamus, Michael Shannon, Alexander
Skarsgård, André
Téchiné, Emma Thompson, Wayne Wang,
and many more, have all put in appearances during
the first half of this year's Berlinale.
There were standing ovations for Jury President
Meryl Streep who - with her co-jurors Lars
Eidinger, Nick James, Brigitte Lacombe, Clive Owen,
Alba Rohrwacher and Ma?gorzata Szumowska - will
award the Berlinale's main prizes on February 20.
And
so far the turnout of visitors at the 66th Berlin
International Film Festival has been tremendous. At
half time, almost 250,000 tickets have been
sold.
Closing & Award Ceremony of the 66th Berlin
International Film Festival will take place
February 20.
Plight of refugees
This year's Berlin Film Festival shines a spotlight
on the plight of refugees in a string of
documentaries and movies as Europe s endures the
largest refugee influx since World War II, with 1.1
million asylum seekers arriving in Germany last
year, the theme of migration will be omnipresent at
the festival and the politically attuned showcase
hopes to attract refugees as well as film fans this
year.
Jay Weissberg, a Europe-based critic for trade
publication Variety, said it was no surprise that
the Berlin festival would make refugees a theme at
a time when Europe is wrestling with how to deal
with the millions fleeing to its shores.
The
festival that began in 1951 when Germany -- and
Europe -- was recovering from a war that had
uprooted millions of people is making an extra
effort to welcome the latest wave of refugees who
have fled war in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere.
Refugees
will be taken behind the scenes of the festival,
some accompanied by NGO workers who are helping
them to adjust to life in Germany, and there will
be a refugee-staffed food truck serving up
Mediterranean fare with the aid of a celebrity
chef, the festival said in a statement.
Kosslick, the festival's director, told Reuters in
an interview that without losing sight of its
primary goal of presenting the best of world
cinema, this year's Berlinale is programmed in part
to show why people become refugees.
"If you lose your homeland
you don't lose it because you want to leave your
house, you want to leave your garden, your flowers,
your family," Kosslick said. "You want to be happy,
and you are leaving because you are not happy and
this is the way you can see the whole
Berlinale."
Germany has taken in more than a million refugees
over the past year, the largest number of any
European country.
The Berlinale's European
Film Market (EFM) is also heading for success in
2016. This international platform for trading in
film rights and audio-visual content has again
registered a rising number of visitors and
exhibitors.

selected as the 2016 Tournament of Roses Grand
Marshal.
Throughout his almost 40-year career making
documentary films, Burns, age 62, has been honored
with countless awards, including 14 Emmy®
Awards, two Grammy® Awards and two Oscar®
nominations. Burns will ride in the 127th Rose
Parade® presented by Honda, themed "Find Your
Adventure" on January 1, 2016.
"The Rose Parade is an annual tradition woven into
the fabric of America, so it's such an honor to be
chosen as the Grand Marshal," said Burns. "I've
never been to the Parade in person, so this will be
a new adventure for me. I'm looking forward to
sharing the experience with my family and all the
fans of the Rose Parade who will be watching on New
Year's Day."
Burn's next film, Jackie Robinson, made with his
daughter Sarah Burns and her husband David McMahon,
will air on PBS on April 11 and 12, 2016.
Burns was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1953. He
graduated from Hampshire College in Amherst,
Massachusetts, in 1975 and went on to be one of the
co-founders of Florentine Films.

The Golden Mike Awards® are Southern
California's most prestigious, and most coveted,
broadcast journalism prize. What sets the Golden
Mikes apart from other competitions is the "Golden
Mike Standard of Excellence." Unlike most awards
contests in which winners are determined by
selecting which entry is the "best" among all those
submitted in each category, winners of the Golden
Mike Awards®" must also meet the "Standard of
Excellence." If the judges decide that no entry in
a category meets the "Standard of Excellence," then
no award is given in that category. As a result,
Golden Mike Award® winners know that their work
has been judged to be "excellent," as well as the
"best."
