Troy Cory was among the first
international entertainers and the first
American entertainer to perform in the
People's Republic of China, beginning in
1988. In itself a notable
culture-historical feat, in view of
China's closed door policies of the late
70s and well into the 80s. The PRC's
administrative climate in comparison is
much less restrictive now and China's open
door policy enables many entertainers to
introduce themselves to the populace
Chinese audiences. Shanghai

Amazon
pitched its facial-recognition system in
the summer to Immigration and Customs
Enforcement (ICE) officials as a way for
the agency to target or identify illegal
immigrants.
At the June meeting
in Silicon Valley, revealed in emails as
part of a Freedom of Information Act
request by the advocacy group Project
on Government Oversight, officials
from ICE and Amazon Web Services talked
about implementing the tech giant's
Rekognition face-scanning platform to
assist with Homeland Security
investigations.
An Amazon Web
Service official specializing in federal
sales contracts, whose name was redacted
in the emails, wrote that the conversation
involved "predictive analytics" and
"Rekognition Video tagging/analysis" that
could possibly allow ICE to identify
people's faces from afar -- a type of
technology that immigration officials have
voiced interest in for its potential
enforcement use on the southern
border.
"We are ready and
willing to support the vital [Homeland
Security Investigations] mission," the
Amazon official wrote.
Amazon's Jeff Bezos
personally owns The Washington Post.
Amazon
has marketed the technology to police
departments as a way to target and
identify criminals, and it is used in
Florida and Oregon. Civil rights and
privacy advocates are concerened that
the unproven technology's expansion could
have a chilling effect on public protests
or embolden government and police efforts
to supercharge mass surveillance.
In June Amazon
employees urged the company to reject work
that could be used for government
surveillance. It is said hundreds of
anonymous Amazon workers wrote CEO Jeff
Bezos a letter roughly one week after the
meeting, saying, "We refuse to build the
platform that powers ICE, and we refuse to
contribute to tools that violate human
rights."
Microsoft,
a tech giant building facial-recognition
tools that compete with Amazon's, came
also under fire from employees for the
potential work it could do as part of a
major ICE contract.
Google
has also faced internal resistance over
its contributions to Project Maven, a
Defense Department initiative that would
allow AI to identify objects in
battlefield drone video. [No word on
whether Google employees oppose
its Dragonfly search
engine, which was developed secretly
for China. It links users' searches
to their personal phone numbers, making it
easier for the Communist government to
track every citizen. Google's Dragonfly
also blocks any content Communist rulers
don't want their citizens to see.]
Amazon
has a number of government contracts and
is believed to be the lead contender to
win the Pentagon's $10 billion
cloud-computing contract, known as JEDI
(Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure).
The company also operates a private cloud
service for top-secret intelligence used
by the CIA.
Bezos
has donated money to fund college
scholarships for
"undocumented" students, but he has
also publicly supported the tech
industry's contributions to
national-security efforts and other
government work.
"If
big tech companies are going to turn their
backs on the Department of Defense, we are
in big trouble," Bezos said at a recent
event. Asked about illegal immigration, he
added, "I'd let them in if it were me. I
like 'em, I want all of them in. But this
is a great country and it does need to be
defended."

NO HOLLYWOOD,
California - The 18th
annual Valley
Film Festival (VFF) will take
place, October 31 &endash; November 4,
2018 at Laemmle NoHo7 in the NoHo Arts
District. It kicks off with the
World Premiere of 818, a character driven
drama that weaves five stories in one
Valley. Directed by Chris Gehrt, Joe
Hackett, and Joe Taylor.
Tickets available
at ValleyFilmFest.com.
The Valley Film Festival supports local
and international voices that advance
storytelling, while furthering the
education, production, and exhibition of
film. VFF has been showcasing great
content for 18 years and is a non-profit
project of Community Partners.
"United by Film," has been the
Festival's unwritten theme for the last
few years and is now front and center,
complete with the hashtag
#unitedbyfilm. "As a festival, we see
the universal threads in film submissions
from all over the world," said VFF's
founder Tracey Adlai. "There is an the
explosion of cinema coming out of the
Middle East to Russia, to the 818, f
sharing stories that know no borders and
unify our hopes, dreams, conflict,
heartbreak, and tragedy."
Prior to the screening, Academy Award
® nominee and Golden Globe ®
winner, Sally Kirkland, will be presented
with the Jack F. Murphy Award for
Achievement in Independent Filmmaking.
Kirkland was chosen for her incredible
career spanning six decades in theater,
film, and TV, her advocacy of the arts,
and her involvement with VFF over the last
18 years.
VFF18's Centerpiece Screening is the Los
Angeles premiere of GEORGE MICHAEL:
FREEDOM &endash; THE DIRECTOR'S CUT.
Directed by George Michael and David
Austin, this deeply autobiographical film
is narrated by the late GRAMMY® Award
winner. George takes us through his
musical life, his thoughts on public life,
and openly into his very private life.
Closing the Festival is the World Premiere
of I'LL BE NEXT DOOR FOR CHRISTMAS, a
comedy about a family that's crazy for
Christmas, except for the 16-year-old
daughter, directed by David Willis.
Features: Nicole Sullivan (Mad TV),
Atticus Shafer (The Middle), Jonathan
Mangum (GLOW), Juliette Angelo
(Speechless, New Year's Eve), Beth
Littleford (Crazy Stupid Love), and
Kirrilee Berger (One Dollar).
VFF is planning to announce the launch of
The Valley Film Market, currently
scheduled for March 2019. "We're more than
an exhibitor," said Adlai, "and we'd like
to help films make the transition from the
festival circuit to a full theatrical or
VOD release by facilitating the
introduction of independent film
producers, distributors, and sales agents
in an intimate setting."
ABOUT THE JACK F. MURPHY AWARD: This award
was founded to honor the memory of Jack F.
Murphy (1947-2013), a film producer and
distributor who worked for Seven Arts
Productions, Criterion Pictures Corp., and
American Cinema Marketing. In 2001 Murphy
formed Associated Screen Artists to
produce and develop feature films
including Havoc. He revived Richard
Elfman's 1980 production of Forbidden Zone
as a film festival favorite and cult
classic. Jack was a founding member of The
Valley Film Festival's Advisory Board and
a lover of independent film. John
Putch (Route 30 trilogy, Cougar Town) was
the Festival's inaugural recipient in
2017.

New iPhone could deal blow
to phone carriers as classic SIM cards
face extinction
Each new iPhone is
usually good news for mobile network
operators. In anticipation the latest
Apple Inc. device always comes with
upgrades that make it easier to play
games, watch films and download reams of
data. More data means bigger phone
bills.
However,
the new iPhones might not be so welcome.
That's because there's a possibility that
Apple could introduce so-called electronic
sims, or eSIMs, a shift to become
inevitable to the new technology.
The
SIMs issue (under investigation by the
DOJ) has been rife since Apple complained
to the Justice Department that Verizon
Communications Inc. and AT&T Inc. were
colluding to prevent their
introduction.
There
are very few people who don't have a
smartphone already, meaning it's
increasingly a battle for market share
rather than new users.

Comcast Corp.
won out over 21st Century Fox and the Walt
Disney Co. in the battle for Sky
television by offering nearly $40 billion
for the satellite-TV service that boasts
23 million customers in five European
countries.
Winning Sky is a
huge boost for Comcast and its chief
executive, Brian Roberts. His company,
which started as a small Tupelo, Miss.,
cable system a half-century ago, has
steadily grown through acquisitions and
should soon boast more than 50 million
customers worldwide. Comcast will have a
presence in some of the most prosperous
countries in Europe -- Britain, Ireland,
Germany, Austria and Italy.
Sky is one of the
most popular TV brands in Europe. Last
year, the satellite TV broadcaster
produced $18.5 billion in revenue. It
creates its own original programs, runs
the popular Sky News channel and maintains
exclusive partnerships in Europe with HBO,
Showtime and Warner Bros. studio.

Back in the
80s, as a goodwill ambassador representing
the U.S.A., Troy Cory and his back-up
dancers and singers, "The Brooke Sisters,"
were the first entertainers from the
United States to appear in a full staged
program in the People's Republic of China
during the Shanghai TV Festival, and
televised on China's National Television
(CCTV), viewed by over 300 million
people.
It was there Cory met Jiang Zemin, then
mayor of Shanghai, and who later became
the 5th President of the People's Republic
of
China.
The '88 Shanghai Concert was the
beginnings of Troy's concert tours in
China for the next two decades. The
concerts, just to name a few, included the
following cities: Shanghai, Beijing,
Anshan, Harbin,
Fuzhou and and Tsingtao
