• 115-China will be MIPCOM's 2018 Country of Honor
The world's entertainment content market, MIPCOM takes place in Cannes, France, from 15-18 October.
•••• "China has now emerged as a major producer and consumer of film and television and will play a leading role at MIPCOM, to present to the world great Chinese stories and work with colleagues around the globe to usher in a better future," said Mrs. Ma Li, Director General of the International Cooperation Department of the National Radio and Television Administration, People's Republic of China.
•••• "The Chinese television and entertainment sector has a special place within the MIPCOM and MIPTV community going back to 2004 when MIPTV welcomed the largest-ever delegation of Chinese TV executives at an international television market. As MIPCOM 2018 Country of Honour, China will be showcasing its wide range of programme genre destined for international television channels," commented Laurine Garaude, Director of Reed MIDEM's Television Division.
•••• The announcement comes hot on the heels of new industry data reporting that China is now the second largest television market in the world, overtaking the United Kingdom and behind the United States.
•••• According to a report from IHS Markit, China spent $10.9 billion on television programming in 2017 compared to $10 billion in the UK. TV broadcasters spent $6.4 billion while online giants Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent invested $4.5 billion to provide programmes for their online entertainment platforms. Original programming accounted for 49% of shows aired in China with the rest being made up of acquisitions (46%) and sports programming.
•••• "In recent years we have seen the growth in Chinese shows being presented at our events for sale to international broadcasters and an increase in cross-border partnerships between Chinese and international producers. We anticipate that the trend towards Chinese content being exported to international territories will speed up over the next two to three years and we are very keen for MIPCOM and MIPTV to be part of that process," noted Reed MIDEM's Laurine Garaude.
•••• "At MIPTV 2018 we showcased several Chinese formats including 'National Treasure.' And in the documentary sector, the agreement between Tencent and BBC to produce high-quality documentaries is an indication of the desire to develop bilateral production partnerships," added Laurine Garaude.
•••• The MIPCOM Country of Honour programme will include conference panel discussions on the Chinese market during MIPJunior and MIPCOM, multiple showcases of the latest Chinese programmes, a Chinese-themed Opening Night Welcome Reception, a look into the hottest shows from China in the popular Fresh TV presentation and the largest-ever China Pavilion.

PARIS -- CBS Studios International will host the world premiere screening of the new Showtime limited series, "Escape at Dannemora", at MIPCOM 2018
Screening will take place in the Palais des Festivals on Monday 15 October, with Ben Stiller, Executive Producer and series director attending the event in Cannes.
•••• "Escape at Dannemora" is based on the stranger-than-fiction account of a prison break in upstate New York in the summer of 2015 that spawned a massive manhunt for two convicted murderers. The prisoners were aided in their escape by a married female prison employee, with whom they both became sexually entangled. It stars Oscar®-winners Benicio Del Toro ("Traffic") and Patricia Arquette ("Boyhood"), alongside Paul Dano ("There Will Be Blood") and Bonnie Hunt ("Life with Bonnie"). • A People Priest

Monsingor Gallagher loved being a people priest. He was truly beloved and loved his parishes and high school ministry. He was also loved by many Archdiocesan committes he led as well as the man boards he was member of.

He passed away after a long battle with cancer, on July 26, 2018, at his beloved St Charles parish.

Msgr. Robert Gallagher was a native Angeleno, born on November 21, 1946. He went to grade school and high school at St. Genieve's in Van Nuys, California, where he was voted Student Body President. Bob always had a calling to be a priest noted Father Jose Magaña in his Sunday church bulletin. He would play priest as a little boy setting up an altar. Throughout grade school and high school, Bob continually talked of priesthood. His parents encouraged Bob to go to a co-ed college before entering seminary. He went to one year of college at Cal State Northridge, and ended up at St. John Seminary in Camarillo, California. He was ordained a priest on May 26, 1973, in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles after attending St. John's Seminary in Camarillo and later got his Master's degree. He has told the family many times throughout his life how he loves being a priest. Monsignor Gallagher truly was a people priest. He was truly beloved and loved his parishes and high school ministry. He was also loved by many Archdiocesan committees he led as well as the man boards he was member of said Father Jose.

• Vigil
•••• The day before the funeral mass, Wednesday August 1, a Vigil was held at St. Charles Borromeo, when fellow priests, family and parishioners had the opportunity to say a last goodbye to their beloved priest. His Eminence Roger Mahony told the audience how in the 26 month that Monsignor Gallagher was battling cancer he never heard a word of complaint and that he will be greatly missed.
•••• Music Director James Drollinger addressed all who attended with his words of gratitude to and love for Monsignor Gallagher, and ending with the heartfelt "St. Joseph's Song," by Michael Card.
••• Father Jose Magaña spoke of the last few days in the life of Bob as he likes to refer to Monsignor Gallagher, and of Monsignor Gallagher's repeated wishes that he wanted "to go home."

• Farewell
•••• On August 2, the faithful of St. Charles Borromeo Church turned out by the hundreds to say farewell to Monsignor Robert Gallagher, who served as pastor of the Catholic parish in North Hollywood for almost 20 years The service was conducted by the Rev. José Gomez, the archbishop of Los Angeles with His Eminence, Cardinal Roger Mahony, Archbishop Emeritus of Los Angeles, Reverend Alexander Salazar, Reverend Joseph Brennan , Reverend David O'Connell, Rev. Jeff Baker, Rev. Msgr. Peter Nugent and Reverend Jose Magaña, Pastor, in attendance.
•••• Auxiliary Bishop Edward Clark, who delivered the sermon, said he had known Msgr. Gallagher for 53 years, going back to their time in the seminary.
•••• He described Gallagher, as "very strong-willed, stubborn, opinionated… He liked things to be done his way" but added, "he had a boundless ability to make friends and to maintain friendships."
•••• Sunshine lit through the church's stained glass windows during the nearly two-hour service, warming the interior of the church that Gallagher helped renovate during his tenure at St. Charles Borromeo.
•••• Bagpipes played outside the church as Msgr. Gallagher's casket was placed into the hearse before being taken to Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City for burial.

St. Charles Borromeo Church is a Catholic church and elementary school that serves the North Hollywood community in Southern California.

The church, a beautiful building depicting Spanish, colonial-style architecture, is located at Moorpark and Lankershim in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. It is one of the oldest parishes in the San Fernando Valley dating back to 1921. It has long been a parish with celebrity members and many celebrities that have lived in the Toluca Lake, North Hollywood, and Studio City communities served by St. Charles Borromeo.

Hollywood connection

St. Charles Borromeo was the home parish of Bob and Dolores Hope, who lived a short distance from the church on Moorpark. In 1969, Bing Crosby, Loretta Young, Ed Sullivan, Ronald Reagan, Danny Kaye, Gregory Peck, Jack Benny, Danny Thomas, Dorothy Lamour and Spiro Agnew attended the wedding of Bob Hope's daughter, Linda, at St. Charles.

• 114- Generational soul singer, Aretha Franklin dies

Aretha Franklin, who became known as the "Queen of Soul" has died August 16, of advanced pancreatic cancer, according to her publicist Gwendolyn Quinn. She was 76.
•••• Aretha Louise Franklin was born March 25, 1942, in Memphis, the fourth of Barbara and Clarence LaVaughn Franklin's five children.
•••• As a child she sang gospel at her father's Baptist church in Detroit, Michigan, where her father, C. L. Franklin, was a minister. He surrounded her with voices from many record labels like Decca Records, Capitol Records, Aladdin Records, Mercury Records, Miltone Record Co, Savoy Record Company, and Specialty Records whose musicians included frequent house guests including Art Tatum, Nat King Cole, Dinah Washington, James Cleveland and gospel great Clara Ward, that later had a marked influence on her protegee Aretha Franklin, who adopted her moan for secular songs and who saluted Ward in the 1970s gospel album "Amazing Grace."
•••• At the end of the 1950s, Aretha saw her friend Sam Cooke of Specialty Records, move from gospel prominence to pop success. Rather than join some of her friends at the new local label Mowtown, she set her sights on a large international company.
• 1960 - Columbia Records
At the age of 18, she embarked on a secular career, recording for Columbia Records but achieving only modest success, but by the end of the 60s she was being called "The Queen of Soul."
• 1966 - Atlantic Records -
After signing to Atlantic Records in 1966, Franklin achieved commercial acclaim and success with songs such as "Respect", "Chain of Fools", "Think", "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)", and "Spanish Harlem".
• 1979 - Arista Records
After her father was shot during a burglary in 1979, she left Atlantic and signed with Arista Records. For the longest period of her recording career (1980-2003) she collaborated with industry legend Clive Davis's (CCO for Sony Music Entertainment).
•••• In 2003, she had ended the 23 year relationship with Arista and opened her own label, Aretha. Franklin released her first album on the label, "A Woman Falling Out Of Love," in 2011. It marked her fifty years in show business.
•••• BBC recording artist/producer Troy Cory, of the Troy Cory Show and executive producer Donald Butler created R&B Plus which aired on Channel 9, and included such artists, as Jeffrey Osborn, Freda Payne, Ray Charles, Janice Marie Johnson of a Taste of Honey, Siedah Garrett, Kenny G; Beau Williams; Rockwell; Nona Hendrix; Philip Baily; Cameo; Timmy Thomas; R.J. Reynolds.
•••• It was R&B that catapulted Franklin up to the top of her genre and she went on venturing into virtually every style of music, from jazz and classical to rhythm and blues, to pop and rock.
•••• In 1998, Franklin received international acclaim for singing the opera aria "Nessun dorma" at the Grammy Awards that year, replacing Luciano Pavarotti. Later that year, she scored her final Top 40 song with "A Rose Is Still a Rose."

Associated Press -- Aretha Franklin's funeral will be held Aug. 30 in her hometown of Detroit.
•••• The late singer's publicist, Gwendolyn Quinn, said Friday that the funeral, to be held at Greater Grace Temple, is limited to family and friends.
•••• Public viewings will take place Aug. 28-29 at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
•••• Franklin will be entombed at Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit, along with her father Rev. C.L. Franklin; sisters Carolyn Franklin and Erma Franklin; brother Cecil Franklin; and nephew Thomas Garrett.

• 101-Start-up NewTV - to bring Studio quality to digital video with $1-billion dollar infusion.
Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman are putting their biggest bet to hit Hollywood in lecent years -- on digital video start-up NewTV, to bring blockbuster production value to the low-budget video space.
•••• Katzenberg co-founded Dream Works Animation and was behind Walt Disney;s greatest animated hits. Whitman ran Hewlett-Packard for years and grew EBay into an e-commerce giant.
•••• Their backers include all the major film and TV studios -- such as Walt Disney Co., Warner Media and 21st Century Fox, which plan to create original content for the planned subscription service. Indie studios, including Lionsgate, have signed on as well.
•••• Digital upstarts have struggled to find a viable business model , but NewTV got a big confidence boost Monday, disclosing $1 billion in funding to produce and distribute short videos for mobile devices.
•••• A group of funders include Madrone Capital Parters in Menlo Park, Goldman Sachs Group Inc., JPMorgan Chase and Jack Ma's Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba.
•••• The start-up hasn't announced any shows or launched an app. However, Katzenberg and Whitman need a big war chest to make their offering stand out as companies such as Netflix, Apple and Amazon.com spend billions to woo established directors, writers, actors and producers.
•••• The videos, delivered in 10-minute episodes, are expected to cost $100,000 a minute to produce, about 30 times what most producers drop on bite-sized videos consumed on smartphones. NewTV will distribute comedies, dramas, reality TV programs and other shows licensed from the studios. The shows will be available on a subscription-based app that is expected to launch during the holiday season of next year.
•••• NewTV, the first big venture to emerge from Katzenberg's investment company WndrCo., aims to do with short online video what HBO did for television: get people to pay a subscription by offering the content people can't get from free channels.
•••• The app will have a lower-priced tier that includes ads and a higher-priced ad-free version. The executives did not say what it would charge.

•••• Wagner originally planned that Munich would be the focal-point of his music. After being banished from immediate contact with Ludwig II at the end of 1865, however, he switched his attention from Munich to Nuremberg, which he saw as especially appropriate for the performance of The Mastersingers and his other operas.

The company was ordered by the European Commission on Wednesday to pay $5 billion (¤ •4.3 billion euros) for unfairly pushing its apps on smartphone users and thwarting competitors.
•••• "Google has used Android as a vehicle to cement the dominance of its search engine," Margrethe Vestager, Europe's top antitrust official, said in a statement.
•••"They have denied European consumers the benefits of effective competition in the important mobile sphere," she added.
•••The Commission said that Google broke the law by requiring manufacturers to install its Google Search and Chrome apps as a condition for licensing Google's app store.
•••It said that Google paid some large smartphone makers and network operators to install apps on phones before they were sold. It also prevented manufacturers from selling devices running on alternative versions of its Android operating system.
•••Google has been ordered to stop the practices within 90 days, or face additional penalties of up to 5% of daily worldwide revenue for Alphabet Inc., Google's parent company.•••

Google's European fine raises pressure on U.S. regulators to examine the company's business practices
•••Joseph Simons, chairman of U.S. Federal Trade Commission, said his agency would "read what the EU put out very closely." He said that at a House subcommittee hearing hours after authorities in Brussels ordered Google to change the way it makes Android device makers pre-install its search and Web browsing apps.
•••"In the antitrust world, most of the problematic conduct occurs where firms are big and have market power," said Simons, referring to the duopoly of Google and Apple in the mobile software market. "This is one of the places we would focus."

The U.S. Justice Department is appealing the ruling that federal judge Richard Leon issued allowing AT&T Inc. to buy Time Warner Inc. in the biggest antitrust case of this century.

•••• • The appeal is surprising given that Judge Leon issued a sweeping rejection of the government's arguments. In the trial, the DOJ took the point that the deal violated antitrust law because it would harm competition in the pay-TV market and raise consumer prices.
•••••••• AT&T 's General Counsel said the company did not expect the Justice Department to appeal. "While the losing party in litigation always has the right to appeal if it wishes, we are surprised that the Department of Justice has chosen to do so under these circumstances," said David McAtee.

Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. reached a settlement in their U.S. patent battle, ending a seven-year fight over smartphone designs that far-reached the globe.
•••• Settlement terms were not disclosed and it is not known who first made the call after tiring to pay outside lawyers.
••••The string of lawsuits started in 2011 after Apple co-founder Steve Jobs threatened to go "thermonuclear" on any rival that used the Android operating system and accused Samsung of "slavishly" copying the iPhone design.
•••• The ensuing litigation cost each company hundreds of millions of dollars in legal fees and tested their reputations as innovators.

•••• AT&T is raising an obscure fee to make an extra $970 million a year, analyst says.
•••• Arguing for the Time Warner merger deal against the Justice Department in court this year, attorneys for AT&T claimed that prices for AT&T's pay-TV service, DirecTV, were likely to go down.
•••• AT&T Inc.'s wireless customers are expected to pay almost $1 billion more every year to the company after AT&T increased a monthly "administrative fee" this spring in a move that went largely unnoticed, according to an industry analyst.
•••• The analyst, Walt Piecyk of BTIG, initially estimated that AT&T could pocket about $800 million more per year from the higher fee, before revising that figure upward to $970 million once he learned that the fee hike also will affect tablets and smartwatches on AT&T's network, not just cellphones.

••••On Wednesday, June 27, Charlie Beck handed his chief's badge and four-star pin to his successor, Michel Moore. The batch and four stars pinned to Moore's collar were worn by Bratton before Beck.
••••He returned his gun, which he had inherited from a police officer who was killed in Afghanistan, to the officer's Los Angeles Police Department colleagues.
••••Beck then walked out of LAPD headquarters, greeted by rows of officers, including mounted patrols, who snapped to attention and saluted.
••••After shaking hands with Moore and his predecessor, former chief William J. Bratton, Beck climbed into a vintage black Pontiac GTO with the license plate "6T4 GTO," gunned the engine and drove off to his farewell party at the Los Angeles Police Academy in Elysian Park.

••It was LAPD veteran Michel Moore's first day leading the Los Angeles Police Department,- but he had worked closely with William J. Bratton and then Charlie Beck during their tenures as chief as they transformed a department once known for brutal tactics and corruption into one that is on the forefront of community policing and efforts to reduce police shootings.
••••"He's listened to the people of this city for three decades. He's learned the ins and outs of every facet," Mayor Eric Garcetti told city officials and LAPD officers at the Police Academy in Elysian Park. "Our next chapter is not something he'll need to learn on the job. He's already been busy writing it."
••••That next chapter, Moore said in his swearing-in speech, will include deepening the community's trust in the LAPD, as well as listening to the concerns of the department's 10,000 sworn officers and 3,000 civilian employees.
••••"A department that once operated with the mentality of policing a neighborhood by force has embraced the understanding that our true strength is shown by our ability to partner and collaborate," said Moore, 57. "To the people of Los Angeles, I am committed to deepening your trust by ensuring we are a department that is highly visible, accessible and responsive, policing with purpose, compassion and partnership."
••••In his speech, Moore also promised to reduce the use of deadly force by his officers, who in 2017 fatally shot 17 people, despite training that teaches them to step back from dangerous encounters and to use Tasers and beanbag shotguns when possible.
••••Moore had already been sworn in the previous day at City Hall, after the City Council voted unanimously to confirm his appointment. The oath-taking and pinning of the chief's four stars were reenacted Thursday in front of about 600 spectators.

Supreme Court ruling updates privacy law for a digital age.
•••• In a victory for privacy in the digital era, the Supreme Court ruled June 22, that the Constitution protects tracking data from a cellphone, requiring police to have a search warrant to obtain cell tower records that can show a person's movement over days or weeks.
•••• By a 5-4 vote the justices said the 4th Amendment protects the tracking data, even though these records are collected and held by a private company, not by the individual who is the target of the search.

• 108-KCET and KCOP to merge in changing market
•••• KCETLink Media Group (KCET) and PBS SoCal (KOCE), the flagship PBS outlet for Southern California, have agreed to merge the companies. The name of the new organization will be announced with the closing of the merger, which is expected to be completed in the first half of 2018.
•••• "This merger has been in the works for many, many years," said Dick Cook, chairman of KCET's board, who will become chairman of the combined entity when the deal closes this summer.
•••• The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which allocates federal dollars to public stations, long had persued the two stations to unite. That goal made more essential in an era in which President Trump and some members of Congress have threatened to slash funding for public broadcasting.
•••• Merger talks began three years ago but were put on hold because of the Federal Communications Commission's spectrum auction last year. More than half of the $19.8 billion generated in the auction went to broadcasters that were willing to relinquish some of their spectrum.
•••• KCET, based in Burbank, received about $65 million from the auction, while KOCE collected about $49 million. That money allowed the organizations to fortify their finances and establish endowments for programming.
•••• The two stations will fold together their separate assets, with neither side making any payments to the other, the officials said. Andrew Russell, president and chief executive of PBS SoCal (KOCE) will run the combined entity, which will have about 130 employees. No layoffs are immediately planned. KCET has been without a chief executive since February, when Michael Riley joined Ellen DeGeneres' company.
