Troy Cory was among the first
international entertainers and the first
American entertainer to perform in the
People's Republic of China, beginning in
1988. In itself a notable
culture-historical feat, in view of
China's closed door policies of the late
70s and well into the 80s. The PRC's
administrative climate in comparison is
much less restrictive now and China's open
door policy enables many entertainers to
introduce themselves to the populace

Following the
Hollywood Foreign Press Assn having been
bumped off the air by NBC -- following
months of heated controversy -- the 79th
Golden Globe Awards were handed out at a
starless, no-host, lackluster private
event in the ballroom of the Beverly
Hilton hotel.
With
the event neither televised nor
live-streamed -- and with the media barred
from covering it in person -- the HFPA
unveiled this year's winners to the public
on its web site and via social media.
As always the night
had its big winners. Steven Spielberg's
sweeping new take on "West Side Story"
claimed the top prize in the musical or
comedy category. Jane Campion's brooding
western "Power of the Dog" won the best
picture prize in the drama category, and
S. The HBO series "Succession" and "Hacks"
won the top series prizes, while actors
including Nicole Kidman, Will Smith,,
Michael Keaton and Kate Winslet claimed
trophies too.
However,
none of the nominees chose to attend the
event. No stars were there to deliver the
usual comic banter or give emotional
acceptances speeches.
Where
the Hilton would in former years have been
the epicenter of Hollywood glamour, power
and money, there was just a quiet Sunday
night, with only Hilton staff and the
occasional hotel guest passing outside the
ballroom. There were no glamorous and
high-priced studio-hosted after-parties,
no limousines, no red carpet interviews,
no snapping flashbulbs
Indeed,
given the HFPA's current troubles, many in
Hollywood believe the Hollywood Foreign
Press Assn. would have been better off
simply sitting this year out rather than
attempting to go ahead awkwardly with a
celebrity-free ceremony

Microsoft said on
Friday it will not participate in person
at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES)
2022 in Las Vegas, joining a list of
companies opting not to have a physical
presence at next month's event on concerns
over the rapid spread of the Omicron
COVID-19 variant.
Several other
companies including US automaker General
Motors, Alphabet's Google and
its self-driving auto-technology
company Waymo, Facebook
parent Meta
Platforms, Twitter, Lenovo,
AT&T, and Amazon.com dropped
in-person attendance plans earlier this
week, saying they would not send employees
out of caution over the spread of
Omicron.
GM Chief
Executive Mary Barra had been
scheduled to give a keynote speech at the
annual conference on January 5,
during which the company would have shown
its electric Silverado pickup
"We have decided to
move to an all-digital approach with our
activation at CES 2022 in January," the
US automaker said in a statement. "We
are continuing with our plans on Jan. 5 to
share our significant company news,
including the reveal of the Chevrolet
Silverado EV."
A Google spokesperson
said in a statement: "After careful
consideration we have decided to withhold
from having a presence on the show floor
of CES 2022," adding that Google would
continue to "identify and support virtual
opportunities."
Waymo said in
a blog post that it hopes to
participate virtually if possible at the
Las Vegas event, which traditionally has
drawn over 180,000 people from around the
world to discuss emerging technologies and
party through the night with business
contacts.
ByteDance-owned TikTok said
it would hold a virtual event for partners
and advertisers. Also on
Thursday, Intel said it would
minimize staffing at CES.
The health and
safety of our employees, partners and
customers is always a top priority,"
the chipmaker said. "Our plans for CES
will move to a digital-first, live
experience, with minimal on-site
staff."
CES officials said
the event will still be held in person
from January 5-8 with "strong safety
measures in place," including vaccination
requirements, masking and availability
of COVID-19tests.
"Our mission
remains to convene the industry and give
those who cannot attend in person the
ability to experience the magic of CES
digitally," CES said in a statement. "CES
2022 will go forward as important
innovation for world health and safety,
mobility and solving problems will be
exhibited."
It added that while
it had received 42 exhibitor cancellations
since last Thursday, that was less than 7
percent of the exhibitor floor and 60
others had been added.
The Omicron variant
of COVID-19 was first detected last month
in Hong Kong and southern Africa, sparking
global concerns about a fast-spreading new
version of the virus. Coronavirus
infections have soared wherever highly
infectious Omicron
has spread, triggering new restrictions in
many countries.

2022
///
As CES returns to
Las Vegas, the show will display the next
wave innovation that will shape 2022 and
the economy of tomorrow. The show is set
to feature a plethora of exhibitors
advancing two of the most compelling
technology megatrends of the future:
intelligent automation and the evolution
of the metaverse.
CES is right around the corner, with
over 2100 exhibiting companies
and hundreds of thought
leaders from around the world are
ready to show you how tech has never been
more important in our lives. Key industry
audiences are also showing strong
commitment: 195 of the Fortune Global
500, 77 of the Interbrand 100,
66 of the top retailers, leading US
and global media and attendees
from 159 countries are already
registered and joining us in Las
Vegas. We're ready to bring the industry
back together to experience the next
generation of innovation.
The
Expansion of Intelligent
Automation
Advancements
in cloud infrastructure have allowed tech
companies to pursue more expansive uses of
intelligent automation. This will be
critical as limited available hours and a
tight labor market will require artificial
intelligence (AI) solutions to play a
larger role in the post-Covid economy.
A
mainstay of past shows, autonomous vehicle
(AV) technology will once again be on
display with the intelligent automation
technology's entire value chain showcased
throughout CES 2022. From AV chipmakers
like Qualcomm to leaders in AV perception
technologies like LIDAR leader Luminar to
autonomous vehicle pioneer and first-time
exhibitor Waymo, CES 2022 decidedly will
be an intelligent mobility event.
Still,
AV technology will not be the only area
where AI solutions shine. First-time
exhibitor Beyond Honeycomb is poised to
demonstrate how automation is propelling
innovation forward in the rapidly growing
FoodTech sector. Beyond Honeycomb will
showcase their technology that
allows sensors to study a recipe,
AI to learn a dish, and then allow a
robotic kitchen to prepare the meal.

PASADENA,
CA
--
The
Tournament of Roses is back. After the
coronavirus canceled last year's event,
the 133rd Rose Parade will march down
Pasadena's Colorado Boulevard on Saturday,
Jan. 1, 2022.
LeVar Burton is the grand marshal of the
floral float-filled festivities, which
will air live starting at 8 a.m. PT / 11
a.m. ET on local ABC, NBC, KTLA-5, RFD TV
and Univision channels, and will precede
the 108th Rose Bowl game, which
is presented by Capital One Venture X.
NCAA
football teams the Utah Utes and the Ohio
State Buckeyes will play against each
other in the 2022 Rose Bowl game, which
begins at 2 p.m. PT / 5 p.m.
Already cut the cord? You can stream the
Rose Parade and Rose Bowl game online if
you have a subscription to select live TV
streaming services,
including DirectTV Stream ($70
to $95 monthly), FuboTV ($65 per
month), Hulu with Live TV ($70
per month; includes Disney+ and ESPN+),
SlingTV's Blue or Orange & Blue
plans ($10 to $20 for the first
month, then $35 and up monthly)
and YouTube TV ($65 per
month).
"Dream. Believe. Achieve," is the 2022
theme is and spectators (including those
tuning in) can expect to see floats from
TV shows such as ABC's The
Bachelor and Fox's The Masked
Singer as well as from brands,
corporations and nonprofits including the
AIDS Health Foundation, AMC Theatres,
China Airlines, City of Hope, Louisiana
Office of Tourism, Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day,
Reese's and Trader Joe's. Southern
California cities such as Burbank, South
Pasadena
Due to
concerns
over the rapid spread of the Omicron
COVID-19 variant hundreds of flights have
been canceled this week. The Holiday Bowl
in San Diego was canceled five hours
before kickoff because of COVID-19 issues
with the UCLA Bruins. A performance of
Hamilton at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre
was scrapped on Christmas Eve -- with the
audience already seated -- because of
breakthrough infections backstage.
The famed New Year's Eve celebration in
New York City's Times Square has been
scaled back. The New Year's Eve event in
Los Angeles' Grand Park will be streamed,
with no live audience.
But the Rose Parade will go on, with
organizers expecting hundreds of thousands
of spectators along Pasadena's Colorado
Boulevard.
"All the planning that we have done has
positioned us well to be able to host the
Rose Parade in a safe and healthy way,"
said David Eads, executive director of the
Tournament of Roses.
"The overall sense of renewal and rebirth
of the Rose Parade is forefront with
everybody. We've come up with a couple of
terms for it: 'One parade, two years in
the making,' and 'The bloom is back.'"
The Tournament of Roses is requiring the
6,000-plus parade participants, including
people on floats, marching bands, and
equestrians, to provide proof of
vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test
within 72 hours of the event.
Parade
spectators ages 12 and up in ticketed
areas, like grandstands, will also have to
provide proof of vaccination or a negative
test within 72 hours. Ticket holders ages
18 and up will have to provide photo
identification, and all attendees ages 2
and up in those areas will be required to
wear a mask.
Along
the rest of the 5.5-mile route, where
people can just walk up and watch,
vaccination and negative test results will
not be checked.
"What
we're asking is they take personal
responsibility," staying in family pods,
social distancing as much as possible,
wearing masks and getting vaccinated and
boosted, Eads said.
There
is some comfort, Eads said, in both the
Rose Parade and the Rose Bowl game between
the Utah Utes and Ohio State Buckeyes --
which also will require vaccination or a
negative test from attendees -- being
outdoor events, which health officials say
are safer than indoor gatherings.

New
Year's Day Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game
to ring in the year
2022
///
PASADENA,
Calif. (May 6, 2021) -- As the Pasadena
Tournament of Roses® and its
community partners prepare for the return
of the Rose Parade® presented by Honda
on January 1, 2022, they offer the first
in a series of sneak previews of floral
float entries that will inspire and charm
our worldwide audience on New Year's
Day.
Since the first Rose Parade in 1890, each
float entry presents a unique theme and
visual story that bring their vessel to
life. The theme of the 133rd Rose Parade
-- "Dream. Believe. Achieve."-- is
reflected in the official renderings for
float participants Donate Life, Lions Club
International and Rotary Rose Parade
Float Committee.
The
three organizations' longtime Rose Parade
participation, totaling 85 entries since
1980, continues with symbolic and
spectacular storytelling sure to be
embraced by millions of streetside
and broadcast viewers from across the
country and around the world drawn to
America's New Year Celebration.
The
centerpiece of the 2022 Donate Life float,
"Courage to Hope," is the winged Lion of
Venice from Italy's Piazza San Marco, set
amidst the Venetian Gothic architecture of
the Doge's Palace and Venice's
quintessential gondolas and canals. The
Lion speaks to the Courage and Hope shared
by donor families who have enabled a
legacy through their decision to donate
life; transplant candidates awaiting
life-saving and healing organ, eye and
tissue donation; and all who have been
impacted by the pandemic. Each year more
than 50 organizations nationwide sponsor
the float's life-saving mission,
amplifying the Donate Life/Done Vida
message to viewers and communities
nationwide.
For
nearly 30 years, the entries developed by
Lions Float, Inc. tell inspirational
stories about how the largest service
organization in the world helps others
through humanitarian services, such as
education initiatives like the Lions Quest
program that helps students develop their
social and emotional skills. Aboard the
float are two Lions alongside three ships
filled with children, teachers and mentors
who are on a "Quest for Kindness," a value
championed by the organization worldwide.
Towering above the riders is a lighthouse
representing thousands of Lions clubs,
programs and events that serve as
"Beacons" within their communities.
The Tournament of Roses is a volunteer
organization that hosts America's New Year
Celebration® with the Rose
Parade® presented by Honda, the
Rose Bowl Game® and a variety of
accompanying events. The Association's 935
volunteer members supply more than 80,000
hours of manpower, which will drive the
success of 133rd Rose Parade, themed
"Dream. Believe. Achieve.," on
Saturday, January 1, 2022, followed
by the 108th Rose Bowl
Game.

In Life's current Bicentennial
issue, radio checks in, at #86 on the hot
"100 Events That Shaped America," 19
buttons behind Bell's telephone.
Erroneously, Life lists Guglielmo Marcon's
dots and dashes as the first wireless
broadcast, a fable echoed by the World
Almanac and Encyclopedia Britannica. It's
a forgivable mumpsimus, since the evidence
offered on the following pages has not,
until now, appeared in any national
publication.
The birth of broadcasting is a bizarre
soap opera saga, a lacrymal legend of
mystery, machination, ephemeral
enshrinement, decline, disillusionment and
disaster. It's denouncement dissolves six
miles north of Murray, Kentucky, in a
two-room shanty constructed of pine and
cornstalks, where radio's uncelebrated
architect is discovered 48 hours after his
death, his records scattered, his
equipment destroyed, his brain partly
eaten by rats. Even local radio fails to
mention his demise. He is Nathan Beverly
Stubblefield, the man history over-heard
and then overlooked.
