Spotlight
Humane! A Cruelty-Free Lifestyle Event
By Donna Jeffries of "Hollywood
Beat"
The Hollywood Palladium was
the location of the first annual Spotlight Humane
&endash; a Cruelty-Free Lifestyle Event. The expo,
celebrity fashion show and auction was held for the
benefit of The Humane Society of the United States
Hollywood Office, a non-profit organization whose
signature event is the Genesis Awards. The Genesis
Awards is an annual event which honors the news and
entertainment media for spotlighting
animal-protection issues.
The highly successful
Spotlight Humane event was a real consciousness
raiser. Geared not only towards those already
committed to a cruelty-free lifestyle, but also to
those interested in learning more, and those who
are just simply "cruelty-free-curious". The fun and
informative celebration highlighted the growing
trend for such a lifestyle. Hosted by Jane Velez
Mitchell ('Celebrity Justice'), the show introduced
the latest in food, fashion, accessories,
cosmetics, home furnishings and pet
products.
The highlight of the
festivities was "Compassion in Fashion" - a
spectacular New York style fashion show that
provided an exciting climax to L.A. Fashion Week.
Top models, including the newest and hottest
supermodel Gerren Taylor, hit the catwalk wearing
the best of next season's cruelty-free couture from
designers Bao Tranchi, Kate O'Connor, Sue Wong and
many others. Sexy "leather" dresses, and
full-length faux furs dazzled the
crowds.
The expo contained one of the
largest collections of cruelty-free products
gathered at one time, with hundreds of free
giveaways and samplings from conscientious
companies such as Ecco Bella Botanicals, John Paul
Mitchell, Naked Juice and Simple Green.
Participating restaurants who generously offered
samplings of their mouthwatering vegan cuisine were
Native Foods, Real Food Daily, and California
Vegan. Celebrity auction donors included Kim
Basinger, Martin Sheen and Mary Tyler Moore. All in
all, the event proved to be an important catalyst
in activating public awareness and encouraging
positive attitudes that hopefully will ultimately
lead to a more humane and compassionate society.
Most people are upset at the
idea of animal suffering. But without realizing it,
we can cause (or help stop) the needless suffering
through the products we buy and the foods we eat.
For example, almost all of the animals who end up
as belts and shoes suffer confinement, crowding,
branding, unanesthetized castration, tail-docking,
dehorning and cruel treatment during transportation
and slaughter. Much of our leather comes from
India, where the thriving leather trade is one of
the cruelest on the planet. Most animals become so
sick and injured by the time they arrive for
slaughter that they are beaten and dragged
mercilessly and have hot chili peppers and tobacco
rubbed into their eyes, and their tail bones
painfully twisted and broken in order to make them
stand up. Once inside the slaughterhouse their legs
are hacked off and they are skinned while still
alive. And not only are the animals suffering
&endash; tanneries in the U.S. use dangerous
substances like formaldehyde, coal-tar derivatives
and cyanide &endash; which threaten the environment
and human health. The Centers for disease Control
and Prevention found that the incidence of leukemia
among residents near one tannery in Kentucky was
five times the national average. For more
