115- 124th Rose
Parade
-Tuesday, Jan.
1, 2013,
Pasadena By
Gary Sunkin
Known as the most favorite parade to kick
off the New Year for thousands of spectators who
lined the 5 1/2 mile parade route through Pasadena.
With temperatures dipped into the low 40s everyone
embraced an occasional beam of sunshine as some
were bundled up in blankets and scarfs in
grandstand seats and choice spots on sidewalks
along the route.
Every year I revel in the excitement,
exuberance and optimism in the air, and again this
year's themed "Oh the Places You'll Go!! Rose
Parade, didn't find me
disappointed.
The "A Healing Place" float honored nursing
professionals around the world, and the 2013's
president of the Sally Bixby, the first nurse and
second woman to lead the pageant founded in 1890 to
enhance Southern California's image as a perceived
paradise of sunshine and flowers.
However, maybe the most dramatic moment was
when Army Sgt. 1st Class, Eric Pazz, bounded off
the platform in combat boots and fatigues with his
surprised little son dashing from the sidewalk into
his father's arms, believed by his family to be
still in Afghanistan. The crowd leaped into a
standing ovation and moments later he presented his
wife with a rose and the family boarded the float
"Canines with Courage," honoring military dogs.
Riding in a horse drawn carriage adorned
with roses and fern, was tournament's Grand
Marshall, Jane Goodall, internationally renowned
primatolologist known for her life's commitment in
Africa and for peace around the globe. 2013 will be
the 53rd anniversary of her field study of the
Gombe chimpanzees.
Escorting the 42-flower-bedecked floats were
21 silver-studded equestrian units prancing to the
beat of of the nation's top marching bands. There
were many crowd pleasers among breathtaking floats
and the San Jose Valley Christian/Beijing, China
No. 57 School "East-West Fusion Band," was the
first internationally combined high school band in
Rose Parade history.
"We are very thoughtful about making this
parade a positive, caring and uplifting way to
start the new year," Rose Parade president Sally
Bixby said during an earlier interview.
All in all, as always, it was a spectacular
parade.
///
December 2012 - The 124th Rose Parade
presented by Honda themed "Oh, the Places
You'll Go!" will take place on Tuesday, January 1,
2013, featuring spirited marching bands from
throughout the nation, majestic floral floats, and
high-stepping equestrian units.
The 124th Rose Parade (which is often
referred to as the "Rose Bowl
Parade") will be broadcast on ABC, Hallmark
Channel, HGTV, KTLA (Tribune), NBC, RFD-TV and
Univision. The Parade is also seen in more than 220
international territories and countries.
The Grand Marshal of the 124th Tournament of
Roses, Dr. Jane Goodall On New Year's Day, will
ride in the 124th Rose
Parade® presented by Honda and
themed "Oh, the Places You'll Go!." She
will then toss the coin before the 99th Rose
Bowl Game® presented by VIZIO. Dr.
Goodall has been an inspiration to the Pasadena
Tournament of Roses as the organization continues
to seek ways to make the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl
Game more sustainable by finding ways to evolve
waste-management practices and inspire that change
in those who participate in Tournament of Roses
events.
"We selected our theme, 'Oh, the Places
You'll Go!' with Dr. Goodall in mind as Grand
Marshal," said Tournament of Roses President Sally
Bixby. "The theme can be interpreted as a
celebration of accomplishment, discovery and travel
of course, but equally valid is its implicit call
to action. We think Dr. Goodall's life story
is a testament to the sense of adventure and
openness to possibility that this phrase suggests:
As a young woman, she defied convention to
follow her dreams, and she has committed herself to
a life of global citizenship, inspiring children
and adults alike along the way. 2013 will be
the 53rd anniversary of her field study of the
Gombe chimpanzees. I can think of no one
whose life has better exemplified our theme and
message than Dr. Jane Goodall. Dr. Goodall is
now an international icon, but it is her passion
for discovery and how she has used her celebrity
for the betterment of the world that has drawn us
to her." Click

2008 Rose Parade highlights
Beijing Olympic
Float
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Beijing Olympic
Float joined the renown Pasadena Tournament of Rose
Parade in Los Angeles on Tuesday, giving the show a
spectacular flavor.
Millions of spectators from around the world
cheered as the Beijing Olympic Float passed.
The Rose Parade featured magnificent floral floats,
high-stepping equestrians and spirited marching
bands, displaying the tradition and pageantry for
which it is renowned.
The Beijing Olympic Float, organized by the
Roundtable of Southern California Chinese-American
Organizations and sponsored by Pasadena-based Avery
Dennison Corp., was one of the highlights of the
119th Rose Parade.
This was the first time that the Chinese people
from the Mainland and overseas Chinese have joined
their hands in participating in the grand gala in
its 119-year history.
The float represented the good wills of overseas
Chinese to the upcoming Beijing 2008 Olympic Games,
organizers said.
The theme of this year's New Year's Day parade is
"Passport to the World's Celebrations." It featured
46 floats, 21 marching bands and 18 equestrian
units.
The Beijing Olympic Float themed "One World, One
Dream" was a generous gift from the Beijing Olympic
Games to the American people and the Parade,
according to the organizers.
The float featured the upcoming Olympics' five
official mascots rotating on a base and decorated
with a combination of flowers, including carnations
and daisy petals.
Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard said the Beijing
Olympics Float "celebrates a great international
tradition of competition, discipline and commitment
to strong human values."
"The tournament views the float as I do, as a
celebration of the Olympic Games," Bogaard
said.
"The Tournament of Roses, which now has a history
extending over 119 years, is a nonpolitical
organization," he said. "It celebrates a great
competition consistent with the theme of the Rose
Parade this year, which is the World's Great
Celebrations."
"My sense is that the spirit of the day will be to
celebrate the strength and the positive
achievements of people," Bogaard said.
Richardson Rowe, a tourist from New York, said the
Beijing Olympic Float gave a new meaning to the
Rose Parade on the new year eve. "The
beautifully-decorated float impressed me a great
deal. It serves as a vivid introduction to the
Beijing Olympic Games," he said.
This year's Rose Parade was broadcast on the
American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), the
National Broadcasting Company (NBC), Univision,
HGTV, Travel Channel, Discovery HD as well as
several local television stations in the Los
Angeles area. The Parade was also seen in more than
150 international territories.

It has
come a long way since its early days. The Rose
Parade's elaborate floats now feature high-tech
computerized animation and exotic natural materials

still built exclusively by volunteers from their
sponsoring communities, most are built by
professional float building companies and take
nearly a year to construct. The year-long effort
pays off on New Year's morning, when millions of
viewers around the world enjoy the Rose Parade.
The first
Rose Queen was crowned in 1905, and every year
since 1929, Rose Queens and Rose Princesses have
been a part of the Tournament of Roses.
