Founded on December
2, 1986, the Satellite Broadcasting and Communications
Association of America (SBCA) is the national trade
organization representing all segments of the
satellite industry. It is committed to expanding the
utilization of satellite technology for the broadcast
delivery of video, data and voice services. The SBCA
is composed of DBS platform providers, programmers,
equipment manufacturers, retailers, encryption
vendors, software technology providers and national
and regional distribution companies.
SBCA's headquarters
are in Alexandria, VA, a suburb of Washington, D.C.

Directors
The
Association is governed by a 40 member Board of
Directors elected by executive, retail and distributor
members of the Association. The 2001 chair of the
board is Christine Sheehan, MTV Networks. Other
officers are: Vice Chair and Secretary, Stanley
Kozlowski, National Rural Telecommunications
Cooperative (NRTC); Vice Chair and Treasurer, Eddy
Hartenstein, DIRECTV; Vice Chair, Retailer, Rik
Hawkins, Starpath Communications; Past Chair,

The SBCA is
comprised of five groups:
Programming, Manufacturing, Retail Distribution,
Multiple Dwelling Units (MDU) and Satellite Internet
Group. Each group contains divisions that are
represented by a chair and vice chair, all who serve
on the SBCA board of directors.
The Association
currently has more than 1,400 members. It is funded by
membership dues, the SBCA National Satellite
Convention and Exposition and advertising. There are
eight classes of membership, each offering different
benefits and voting privileges. National Conventions
Held annually,
the SBCA
National
Satellite Convention and Exposition is the premiere
exhibition and trade show for the home satellite
television industry. As the largest satellite
convention in the world, the SBCA Expo features over
160 exhibiting companies displaying an array of
satellite dishes, receiving equipment, and nationally
recognized programming fare.
In addition,
industry experts conduct seminars addressing new
satellite technology, legislation, home theater,
business management, marketing and public relations
efforts.

Convention will be held August 2-4 at the Opryland
Hotel in Nashville, TN.

PUBLIC RELATIONS
PROGRAM -
The Public
Relations Program coordinates industry and technical
communications with SBCA member companies. The program
is charged with representing the Association on
various telecommunications committees, planning
bodies, and serves as a clearinghouse for resource
materials including technical manuals, legislative and
regulatory white papers, and general industry
information. GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS -
The SBCA maintains
a vigorous legislative and regulatory program to
represent the satellite industry before Washington,
D.C. policy makers. The Association is very active in
the establishment of a public policy climate which
encourages the development of the satellite industry
and pursues its goals actively in the Congress, the
Administration, and at the Federal Communications
Commission. EDUCATION - In the satellite industry, we
are known for quality products and satisfied
subscribers.
The SBCA education
department is committed to providing an ever-expanding
array of educational opportunities for anyone involved
in the satellite industry. Satellite Convention
workshops cover sales & marketing, business
management, installation and technical applications
& training.
We also offer ten
Training-on-Demand programs especially designed for
individual long distance learning, and personalized
field seminars and on-site training. In 1998 the SBCA
also introduced the BEST Certification and Standards
Program, comprised of multiple phases of training and
testing dedicated to the advancement of satellite
retailers.
SkyTRENDS -
This is the market
research, data collection and reporting program for
the home satellite industry. Through a
partnership between the SBCA and Media Business Corp,
SkyTRENDS collects and maintains a comprehensive,
computerized database of satellite industry
information.
SkyRESEARCH -
This monthly
statistical newsletter, jointly produced by SkyTRENDS
and Media Business Corp, has approximately 1,000
subscribers. The official publication of the
SkyTRENDS Programs, SkyRESEARCH collects and collates
the industry's data and reports. SkyRESEARCH
accepts no advertising. SkyFORUM - This semi-annual
satellite/financial symposium is the educational
component of the SkyTRENDS program. SkyFORUM was
developed to create a higher awareness of the
satellite industry among financial and investment
communities and to heighten the media attention on the
industry.
