family 1970
- In 1970 he founded Virgin as a mail order

recording studio was built in Oxfordshire where the
first Virgin artist, Mike Oldfield, recorded
"Tubular Bells", later released in 1973. 1984

Virgin
Atlantic Airways, formed in 1984, is now the second
largest British long haul international airline and
operates a fleet of Boeing 747 and Airbus A340
aircraft to New York, Miami, Boston, Los Angeles,
Orlando, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Johannesburg,
Tokyo, Las Vegas, Delhi, Lagos, Port Harcourt,
Shanghai and the Caribbean. The airline is based on
the concept of offering a competitive and high
quality Upper Class, Premium Economy and Economy
service. The airline has won many major awards,
including Airline of the Year Award several
times. 1993 - British Airways,
faced with likely defeat, settled the case,
(Brandson vs. British Airways) -- paying
£500,000 to Branson and a further
£110,000 to his airline; further, BA was to
pay the legal fees of up to £3 million.
Branson divided his compensation among his staff,
the so-called "BA bonus." (After the so-called
campaign of "dirty tricks," Branson sued rival
airline British Airways for libel in 1992. King
countersued Branson, and the case went to trial in
1993. 1993
- the combined sales of Virgin Group Companies
exceeded $1 billion US. In addition to his own
business activities, Branson is a trustee of
several charities, including The Healthcare
Foundation, a leading healthcare charity
responsible for the launch of a health education
campaign named Parents Against Tobacco, aiming to
limit tobacco advertisements and sponsorships in
sports. 1995
- Between 1995 and 1998 Richard Branson, Per
Lindstrand and Steve Fossett (who joined the team
after the tragic death of Alex Ritchie), made a
number of attempts to circumnavigate the globe by
balloon. In late 1998 they made a record-breaking
flight from Morocco to Hawaii but their dream of a
global flight was shattered by bad weather, and
then a Swiss team successfully circumnavigated the
globe in early 1999. 2003 - July, Branson flew
a replica of the first heavier-than-air flying
machine, the glider designed by Sir George Cayley,
at the original site in Yorkshire 2003 - October, he teamed
up with balloonist Steve Fossett as lead sponsor
for an attempt to break the record for a non-stop
flight around the world. A new aircraft, the
GlobalFlyer, was built specially for the attempt by
Scaled Composites and on March 3, 2005, at about
01:50 PM CST, Fossett completed the record-breaking
flight after 67 hours and 1 minute, with an average
speed of nearly 300 mph (480 km/h). 2004 - On September 25,
he announced the signing of a deal under which a
new space tourism company, Virgin Galactic, will
license the technology behind SpaceShipOne to take
paying passengers into suborbital space. The group
plans to make flights available to the public by
late 2007 with tickets priced at
$190,000. 2005. - Branson Listed on
