In
case you've been in the Arctic and didn't get the
Oscar news, the documentary film "March of the
Penguins" took over the spotlight at the Academy
Awards and Luc Jacquet was awarded best director!
The critically acclaimed hit
documentary film "March of the Penguins" was
honored with its very own Oscar by the Academy at
the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. The G-rated
documentary which is narrated by actor Morgan
Freeman is about the struggles that the penguins go
to each year to create, feed and protect their
families in Antarctica.
Luc Jacquet was awarded with
his well-deserved Oscar for As the film's ingenious
director he not only took the stage with his fellow
filmmaker Yves Darondeau and some of their crew,
but they all ended up carrying gigantic stuffed
penguins onto the stage with them! It was a
heartwarming tribute to the furry friends they had
made while making the
film.
Larry
and I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing
the prize-winning French director at the Ojai Film
Festival recently. The charming Frenchman spent
quit a long time with us at the opening night gala,
talking, sharing wine and enjoying the festivities.
During the Oscars Larry and I were definately
rooting for Jacquet and our favorite film. Larry
was thrilled as usual when all his Oscar picks
ended up winning the awards! Lets just hope we
never see a stuffed Larry doll at the Oscars!
Entertainment
columnists will henceforth be honored by the newly
organized Harrison Carroll Cinema Reporting Prize,
it was announced at a star-studded banquet held at
the Marquis Restaurant
recently.
Wanna
know where John Wayne hides out when in Newport ??
On his "Wild Goose" yacht, that's were -- and at
Catalina . . . but not at the usual surfing spots.
He has a favorite little cove called "White's
Landing" on the leeward side between the isthmus
and Avalon. "Duke" was there recently between takes
form his ne pic, "the Little Cowboys,' for Warners.
Incidentally, John, who is one of our favorites in
the Hollywood galaxy, did a bit of entertaining at
the Marquis Restaurant on Sunset Boulevard in honor
of the Harrison Carroll Reporting Prize Award. The
things we remember best were a couple of typical
Wayne-erisms" -- to
wit:
John
is chairman of the new Harrison Carroll Reporting
Prize Foundation. Other members of the board are
Brayden Linden, president; Gerd Oswald, vice
president, and Ernest Borgnine, vice chairman,
while the Board of governors includes many notables
including Melvin Belli, Troy Cory, Sammy Davis Jr.,
Glenn Ford, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Terry Moore (who
attended the meeting in hot pants along with her
mother in a green slack suite), Anthony Quinn,
Robert Wagner and Racquel Welch.
