four Central Asian states launch the
Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)
and sign an agreement to fight ethnic and
religious militancy while promoting trade
and investment. The group emerges when the
Shanghai Five - China, Russia, Kazakhstan,
Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan - are joined by
Uzbekistan.
