Ted Turner Foundation
Founded in 1990 by Ted Turner, Turner Foundation, Inc. (the "Foundation") is a private, independent family foundation committed to preventing damage to the natural systems - water, air, and land - on which all life depends.
• •
The Foundation makes grants in the areas of the environment and population and focuses on four main components:
• • Safeguarding Habitat
The goal of this program is to protect terrestrial and marine habitats and wildlife critical for the preservation of biodiversity. Focus is placed on protecting functioning ecosystems, including core, intact habitats, buffer zones and wildlife corridors.
• • Growing the Movement
The goal of this program is to engage, organize and empower new constituencies in order to ensure the future protection of our environment. This initiative helps stimulate progress in all areas of funding - Safeguarding Habitat; Creating Solutions for Sustainable Living; and Healthy Communities, Healthy Planet.
• • Creating Solutions for Sustainable Living
The goal of this program is to modify patterns of consumption and to halt further degradation of our natural resources by addressing the environmental impacts of our personal, institutional and community choices. This initiative will help foster sustainable policies and practices. Issues may include clean energy, transportation and fuel alternatives, recycling, forest certification efforts, water consumption and conservation, groundwater depletion and human population.
• • Healthy Planet, Healthy Communities
The goal of this program is to restore or mitigate the effects of non-sustainable practices in order to enrich our quality of life and the health of our future communities and planet. Issues may include clean air; clean water; greenspace for community benefit; and environmental health and justice.
• •
The Turner Foundation will annually select priority issues within the above program areas in order to make the greatest impact with our financial resources. Priority issues will be determined by the Trustees in an ongoing effort to best address the most timely and relevant needs.
• • Turner has made his mark as one of the most influential philanthropists in the US. He directs most of his philanthropic activities through Turner Foundation, Inc., which was founded in 1991, the United Nations Foundation, which was created in 1997, and the Nuclear Threat Initiative, which was launched in January 2001.
• •
Turner is Chairman of Turner Foundation, Inc. (TFI), which provides support for the following efforts: 1) clean water and toxics reduction; 2) clean air through improved energy efficiency and renewables; 3) wildlife habitat protection; and 4) the development of equitable practices and policies designed to reduce population growth rates.
• •
TFI has made grants to hundreds of organizations including: Advocates for Youth, Alliance for Affordable Energy, American Bird Conservancy, Coosa River Basin Initiative, Global Green USA, Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention, Montana Land Reliance, National Audubon Society, National Public Radio, National Safe Energy Communications Council, Pacific Rivers Council, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Sierra Club Foundation, Union of Concerned Scientists, Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, and the World Watch Institute. In addition, the Turner Community Youth Development Initiative provides support for locally designed youth development programs in 30 rural communities near Turner's properties.
• •
The Turner Endangered Species Fund is a core grantee of the Turner Foundation, which works to conserve biodiversity by emphasizing efforts on private land, particularly on the Turner properties. Endangered species, which have been reintroduced or restored, include black-footed ferrets, condors, desert bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, Mexican wolves, red-cockaded woodpeckers and West Slope cutthroat trout.
• •
In September 1997, Turner announced his historic pledge of up to $1 billion to the United Nations Foundation (UNF). To date, the organization has awarded grants in support of the goals and objectives of the United Nations to promote a more peaceful, prosperous and just world. UNF has identified four core priorities: women and population; children's health; the environment; and peace and security.
• •
In early 2001, Turner launched the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), a foundation he co-chairs with former Senator Sam Nunn. NTI is working to close the growing and increasingly dangerous gap between the threat from nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and the global response.
• •
The Initiative is a place of common ground where people with different ideological views can work together to make real and significant progress to reduce the risk of use and prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction. NTI is committed to increasing public awareness, encouraging dialogue, catalyzing action and promoting new thinking about reducing the danger from nuclear, chemical and biological weapons on a global basis.

ByLines: Editors Note
It was Al Preiss, co-founder of TVI Magazine with Sam Donaldson, who told me to watch out for Ted Turner - "he was the man that had some big ideas for Hollywood," -- Al was right, He did! You can read in todays news about MGM growth, selling for over 8 billion dollars, and the things he has created for Times-Warner, and even visit the CNN towers that sits on the corner of Sunset and Gower. You can see the Ted Turner article we featured in 1987, "The Future of Colorization" - Josie Cory

• • Turner also enjoys several outdoor sports, especially hunting and fishing.
• • In addition to being one of the richest men in the world, he owns the Cable New Network, Turner Network television, the Atlanta Braves and Hawks, is a champion yachtsman and, up until his recent separation, was married to fitness guru and actress Jane Fonda.
• •
Turner, however, has seen his fair share of hard times. Born Robert Edward Turner III in Cincinnati, Ohio, Turner was faced with his father's suicide at the tender age of 24. Turner was known early on for his eccentric behavior. "Terrible Ted", as they used to call him, grew grass in his dorm while in school and had a particular interest in taxidermy.
• •
He was expelled from school after getting caught with a female companion in his private quarters. Other monikers Turner developed include "The Mouth of the South" and "Captain Outrageous", and Turner even arrived to collect his America's Cup prize drunk.

• •
TBS, Inc. is the leading provider of programming for the basic cable industry, and employs more than 8,000 people worldwide. Philip I. Kent oversees TBS, Inc. as chairman and chief executive officer.
• •
It is a frequently forgotten fact that Ted Turner was the skipper of the boat, Courageous, that won the America's Cup in 1977, the most prestigious event in yachting.
• •
Turner is the media mogul that pioneered the notion of TV "super-station" broadcasting to cable systems nationwide by means of satellite. The system, later dubbed TBS (Turner Broadcasting Station), entered over 160 million homes in approximately 200 countries and in nearly 40 languages. When TBS "fused" with Time Warner, Turner became Time Warner's largest shareholder with 10% of the company. Time Warner is widely known as the largest entertainment company in the world.
• •
Turner gobbled up the local Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Hawks, and aired a variety of other old movies on another station, as well as Cable News Network (CNN). CNN made huge strides while covering the 1981 Reagan assassination attempt, 1986 Space shuttle disaster and the Iraqi missile crisis, which placed reporters in the direct line of fire. Time and time again, CNN reports were, and still are, always the first ones on the scene.
• •
In 1986, Turner made a generous bid to purchase CBS but was unsuccessful. As a consolation, Turner purchased Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) / United Artists instead. Turner has attempted many unique ideas such as the "Checkout Channel", which provided news and information to people in supermarkets. This particular service, however, was quite short-lived.
• •
Turner is one of the few billionaires to realize the absolute significance of giving to those in need. He founded the Turner Foundation to support environmental causes and donated $1 billion to the United Nations. "All the money is in the hands of these few rich people and none of them give any money away," he said in an interview, "It's dangerous for them and the country."
• •
Turner has had three unsuccessful marriages and has five children. His wife, Jane Fonda, has also had three failed marriages and has three children from her earlier marriages. Turner and Fonda have several residences, including a 7,000-acre mansion in Montana, where they raise bison and fly-fish for trout.
• •
In 1998, he was considering a run for American presidency and said, "I am very serious about running for president, but Jane doesn't want me to do it."
