Troy Cory was among the first
international entertainers and the first
American entertainer to perform in the
People's Republic of China, beginning in
1988. In itself a notable
culture-historical feat, in view of
China's closed door policies of the late
70s and well into the 80s. The PRC's
administrative climate in comparison is
much less restrictive now and China's open
door policy enables many entertainers to
introduce themselves to the populace
Chinese audiences. Shanghai

More Than 60 Debut Vehicles at LA Auto
Show's AutoMobility LA
With more than 60
debut vehicles locked in for this year's
AutoMobility LA, nearly half will make
their highly-anticipated world premiere,
including an all new-vehicle from Hyundai
and a pickup truck from Jeep. Kia is also
expected to have multiple vehicles make
their world debut, including one of the
brand's best-selling cars.
German
luxury automaker Audi has confirmed that
the e-tron GT concept 4-door electric
performance coupe will make its global
premiere at AutoMobility LA for media and
industry professionals. Mitsubishi's
newest concept is also set to make its
North American debut at the show.
This
year, 57% of AutoMobility LA's debut
vehicles span across several segments
within the luxury class; these include
Volvo's latest luxury sedan, the all-new
S60, which will make its auto show debut
alongside the all-new V60 Cross Country
wagon. The Swedish automaker has also
confirmed that its global CEO is
slated to make significant announcements
about the company's progressive approach
to transportation from its all-new display
at AutoMobility LA.
The
Polaris Slingshot three-wheeled roadster
will also have its 2019 lineup of models
make their auto show debut at AutoMobility
LA, including the S, SL, SLR, and new
Grand Touring.
"Cars
are designed, purchased, tuned, customized
and enjoyed year-round here in Los
Angeles," said Terri Toennies, Executive
Vice President and General Manager of
AutoMobility LA and the Los Angeles Auto
Show. "In a city that's known for its car
culture and overall passion for cars,
there is no better place to debut
vehicles, reach influencers and engage
with the masses than AutoMobility LA and
the LA Auto Show.
About the Los Angeles Auto Show and
AutoMobility LA
Founded in 1907, the Los Angeles Auto
Show (LA Auto Show®) is the first
major North American auto show of the
season each year. In 2016, the
show's Press & Trade Days merged with
the Connected Car Expo (CCE) to become
AutoMobility LA, the industry's
first trade show converging the technology
and automotive sectors to launch new
products and technologies and to discuss
the most pressing issues surrounding the
future of transportation and mobility.

As we celebrate
the fall season, KCET has just announced
its special Thanksgiving marathon
that
will feature two
KCET original shows including
Emmy-award® winning food series THE
MIGRANT KITCHEN which explores
California's booming food scene through
the eyes of a new generation of chefs and
culinary artisans whose cuisine is
inspired by the immigrant experience.
KCET will continue
the holiday celebration with over three
hours of historical series LOST LA
(sponsored by Union Bank and a
co-production with USC Libraries) hosted
by public historian Nathan Masters. LOST
LA uncovers the dreams that built
modern-day Los Angeles through documents,
photos and other rare artifacts from the
region's libraries and archives.
The marathon will
kick off Thurs., Nov. 22
LOST LA: "Descanso Gardens" -
Descanso Gardens, located in La
Cañada Flintridge just east of Los
Angeles, is a 150-acre botanical garden
that welcomes thousands of visitors
annually. This documentary not only
explores the natural, year-round beauty of
this urban retreat, but reveals its
surprising history as one of Southern
California's most beloved public
gardens.
LOST LA: "Dream
Factory"
Los Angeles is often identified with
Hollywood, but there's more to the
entertainment industry than its
facade of movie stars and blockbuster
films. This episode explores the career of
Lois Weber, a filmmakerwho rose to
greatness in a nascent film industry that
welcomed women into creative leadership
positions; as well as a Central Casting
Bureau that capitalized on the city's
segregated ethnic enclaves when filling
background roles.
LOST LA:
"Yosemite"
Yosemite National Park has seen some
drastic changes since its birth as a park
and preserve in 1864. From a scenic land
maintained by indigenous peoples to its
emergence as a tourist attraction,
Yosemite Valley has become a postcard for
the natural beauty of the state. But
Californians have long fought over how to
manage the Park that currently is a site
of conflict over humanity's relationship
with nature.
LOST LA: "Desert
Fantasy".
California's deserts have sparked the
imaginations of millions of people around
the world including real estate developers
that have created desert utopias like Palm
Springs and Las Vegas. From the famously
alien landscape of Joshua Tree National
Park tothe wide expanses of seemingly
empty land, the desert has been seen as a
place of reinvention and a blank slate to
create dreams.
LOST LA: "Beach
Culture".
One of Southern California's great
international exports has been its beach
culture. Surfers, bodybuilders, and
acrobats taught Californians how to have
fun and stay young at the beach.
LOST LA: "Ghost
Towns".
Three California ghost towns are explored.
Bodie was a Mono County gold mining
settlement that was preserved in time
while Llano Del Rio was a socialist
utopian community in the Mojave Desert.
Finally, Zzyzx was a former health spa on
the way to LasVegas. Some California
dreams succeeded, giving birth to
metropolitan regions in the state's north
and south. Other dreams failed, leaving
nothing but ruins.
LOST LA:
"Venice"
Venice Beach boasts a rich, multilayered
history. From its origins as a themed
seaside resort to its international fame
as a countercultural hub, explore Abbot
Kinney's original Venice of America
development, the community of Beat poets
who called Venice home and how the
commercial renaissance has impacted the
historically African-American neighborhood
of Oakwood.

Amazon
pitched its facial-recognition system in
the summer to Immigration and Customs
Enforcement (ICE) officials as a way for
the agency to target or identify illegal
immigrants.
Amazon
has marketed the technology to police
departments as a way to target and
identify criminals, and it is used in
Florida and Oregon. Civil rights and
privacy advocates are concerened that
the unproven technology's expansion could
have a chilling effect on public protests
or embolden government and police efforts
to supercharge mass surveillance.
In June Amazon
employees urged the company to reject work
that could be used for government
surveillance. It is said hundreds of
anonymous Amazon workers wrote CEO Jeff
Bezos a letter roughly one week after the
meeting, saying, "We refuse to build the
platform that powers ICE, and we refuse to
contribute to tools that violate human
rights."
Microsoft,
a tech giant building facial-recognition
tools that compete with Amazon's, came
also under fire from employees for the
potential work it could do as part of a
major ICE contract.
Google
has also faced internal resistance over
its contributions to Project Maven, a
Defense Department initiative that would
allow AI to identify objects in
battlefield drone video. [No word on
whether Google employees oppose
its Dragonfly search
engine, which was developed secretly
for China. It links users' searches
to their personal phone numbers, making it
easier for the Communist government to
track every citizen. Google's Dragonfly
also blocks any content Communist rulers
don't want their citizens to see.]
Amazon
has a number of government contracts and
is believed to be the lead contender to
win the Pentagon's $10 billion
cloud-computing contract, known as JEDI
(Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure).
The company also operates a private cloud
service for top-secret intelligence used
by the CIA.

New iPhone could deal blow
to phone carriers as classic SIM cards
face extinction
Each new iPhone is
usually good news for mobile network
operators. In anticipation the latest
Apple Inc. device always comes with
upgrades that make it easier to play
games, watch films and download reams of
data. More data means bigger phone
bills.
However,
the new iPhones might not be so welcome.
That's because there's a possibility that
Apple could introduce so-called electronic
sims, or eSIMs, a shift to become
inevitable to the new technology.
The
SIMs issue (under investigation by the
DOJ) has been rife since Apple complained
to the Justice Department that Verizon
Communications Inc. and AT&T Inc. were
colluding to prevent their
introduction.
There
are very few people who don't have a
smartphone already, meaning it's
increasingly a battle for market share
rather than new users.

The world's
entertainment content market, MIPCOM takes
place in Cannes, France, from 15-18
October.
"China has now emerged as a major producer
and consumer of film and television and
will play a leading role at MIPCOM, to
present to the world great Chinese stories
and work with colleagues around the globe
to usher in a better future," said Mrs. Ma
Li, Director General of the International
Cooperation Department of the National
Radio and Television Administration,
People's Republic of China.
"The Chinese television and entertainment
sector has a special place within the
MIPCOM and MIPTV community going back to
2004 when MIPTV welcomed the largest-ever
delegation of Chinese TV executives at an
international television market. As MIPCOM
2018 Country of Honour, China will be
showcasing its wide range of programme
genre destined for international
television channels," commented Laurine
Garaude, Director of Reed MIDEM's

Comcast Corp.
won out over 21st Century Fox and the Walt
Disney Co. in the battle for Sky
television by offering nearly $40 billion
for the satellite-TV service that boasts
23 million customers in five European
countries.
Winning Sky is a
huge boost for Comcast and its chief
executive, Brian Roberts. His company,
which started as a small Tupelo, Miss.,
cable system a half-century ago, has
steadily grown through acquisitions and
should soon boast more than 50 million
customers worldwide. Comcast will have a
presence in some of the most prosperous
countries in Europe -- Britain, Ireland,
Germany, Austria and Italy.
Sky is one of the
most popular TV brands in Europe. Last
year, the satellite TV broadcaster
produced $18.5 billion in revenue. It
creates its own original programs, runs
the popular Sky News channel and maintains
exclusive partnerships in Europe with HBO,
Showtime and Warner Bros. studio.

Cory Meets JiangZemin, former President
PRC
Back in the
80s, as a goodwill ambassador representing
the U.S.A., Troy Cory and his back-up
dancers and singers, "The Brooke Sisters,"
were the first entertainers from the
United States to appear in a full staged
program in the People's Republic of China
during the Shanghai TV Festival, and
televised on China's National Television
(CCTV), viewed by over 300 million
people.
It was there Cory met Jiang Zemin, then
mayor of Shanghai, and who later became
the 5th President of the People's Republic
of
China.
The '88 Shanghai Concert was the
beginnings of Troy's concert tours in
China for the next two decades. The
concerts, just to name a few, included the
following cities: Shanghai, Beijing,
Anshan, Harbin,
Fuzhou and and Tsingtao
(Qingdao)
