115-Oscars No Shows, 1960 - 2016
• Hollywood stars who snubbed the Academy Awards
Not everyone in Hollywood enjoys the gala event. Over the years, a handful of Hollywood A-listers have refused to attend the ceremony, and some who've sidestepped the show did so when they were up for awards of their own.
•••• From Katharine Hepburn to Will Smith, here are Hollywood stars who snubbed the Oscars.
•••• 2016 - Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith called for a boycott of the Academy Awards ceremony upon learning that the nominations, for the second year in a row, featured no actors of color. The actress and her superstar husband, Will Smith, were soon joined in the boycott by other Hollywood heavyweights including Oscar-winning directors Spike Lee and Michael Moore, while other stars -- including Oscar winners George Clooney and Lupita Nyong'o -- spoke out in support.
•••• 2003 - Peter O' Toole - In 2003, Peter O' Toole became the first actor to ever refuse an honorary Oscar. Maybe he did so out of pride. The legendary "Lawrence of Arabia" star, who'd been nominated eight times throughout his nearly 50-year career and lost every single time, wrote to the Academy, explaining, "I am still in the game and might win the lovely bugger outright. Would the Academy please defer the honor until I am 80?"
•••• The Academy responded by telling him stars like Paul Newman and Henry Fonda were given Honorary Oscars and went on to actually win one shortly after. O'Toole was sold, and happily showed up to accept his award.
•••2002 - Woody Allen though he's been nominated several times throughout his decades-long career, has never shown up to receive an Academy Award, explaining, "I have no regard for that kind of ceremony. I just don't think they know what they're doing. When you see who wins those things -- or who doesn't win them -- you can see how meaningless this Oscar thing is."
•••• Allen did make one appearance on the Oscars stage. In 2002, just six months after the September 11 attacks, the director presented a montage of films made in his beloved New York City.
•••• 1987 - Paul Newman was nominated six times from 1961 until 1982, and although he attended the ceremony many times, he never took home an award.
•••• Newman was nominated a seventh time in 1987 for "The Color Of Money." All bets were on him, but by that point, the actor was over it, and decided ahead of time he wouldn't attend the ceremony. "It's like chasing a beautiful woman for 80 years. Finally, she relents and you say, 'I'm terribly sorry. I'm tired,'" Newman explained.
•••• 1981 - John Gielgud, British actor, charmed audiences as the unflappable, acid-tongued butler Hobson in 1981's "Arthur," but the actor didn't bother showing up to the ceremony to accept his award when his name was called.
•• Gielgud, who throughout his eight-decade career nabbed two Oscars, three Tonys, an Emmy and a Grammy (among other honors) -- once said of awards shows, "I really detest all the mutual congratulation baloney and the invidious comparisons which they evoke.""
•••• 1974 - Katharine Hepburn holds a Hollywood record for being nominated 12 times and winning four Oscars over her long career, but she never attended the ceremony to hear her name called. "As for me, prizes are nothing," she once said. "My prize is my work." Hepburn made exactly one appearance at the Academy Awards in 1974 to present the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award to producer and friend Lawrence Weingarten. "I'm living proof that a person can wait 41 years to be unselfish," she quipped.
•••• 1973 - Marlon Brando caused a ruckus when he boycotted the ceremony in 1973 to call attention to Hollywood's misrepresentation of Native Americans. Brando, who won Best Actor honors that year for his performance in "The Godfather," had Native American civil rights activist Sacheen Littlefeather approach the podium to decline his award and give a protest speech on his behalf.
•••• 1970 - George C. Scott was the first actor to refuse to accept an Oscar. The legendary actor, who was nominated in 1970 for his gripping portrayal of Gen. George S. Patton in "Patton," telegraphed the Academy months before the ceremony to let them know he didn't want the award. On the night of the ceremony, presenter Goldie Hawn opened the envelope and cried, "Oh my God! The winner is George C. Scott," but the actor, true to his word, was home on his farm in upstate New York.
•••• Scott said of the Oscars, "The ceremonies are a two-hour meat parade, a public display with contrived suspense for economic reasons." Oops!
•••• 1960 - Elizabeth Taylor, screen legend, was a frequent Oscar nominee, nabbing her first award for her role as a high-class escort in 1960's "Butterfield 8." Six years later, Taylor was poised to win again for her riveting performance opposite husband Richard Burton, who was also nominated, for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" However, Burton had already lost four times at the Oscars and would almost certainly lose again, so both husband and wife boycotted the ceremony in protest -- though Taylor made up an excuse about Burton being afraid to fly back to the states from Paris. Taylor did win again and never issued a statement thanking the Academy.

Paris - • 115- France will be MIPTV 2019's Country of Honour
MIPTV, the international market for entertainment content development and distribution, takes place in Cannes, France from 8-11 April 2019. The MIPTV Country of Honour programme will include a series of conferences and promotional events dedicated to France's TV industry, with further details due to be unveiled in the coming weeks.
•••• In September, France's export promotional association TV France International reported impressive figures for French TV programming in foreign markets for 2017, with total revenue of 325 million euros &endash; the second-best performance in the past 20 years. French exports go well beyond Europe with a notable increase in the United States and Canada, up 16% last year.
•••• While overall international sales have doubled over the past eight years, French animation confirmed its leading position, thanks to the globally acknowledged expertise of Gallic producers. Animation accounted for 37% of total export revenue. Meanwhile, the documentary genre recorded its second-best performance in 10 years, while foreign sales of drama series has known a record year with a 28% increase over 2016. More and more French-made series of all kinds are traveling the world, reaching international audiences. Series like "Le Bureau des Légendes" (The Bureau) or "Midnight sun" (TV France Export Prize 2018) are paving the way to other consistent successes of drama series like long running "Candice Renoir", Sci-fi "Missions" or political fare "Baron Noir".
•••• "It could not be better timing to celebrate France's creativity and savoir-faire on the international content scene. Over the years, French production has taken a growing share of the international market in every genre, from animation to documentary, formats and, of course, drama series. French creators and producers are developing more and more programmes with international appeal without sacrificing that undefinable French touch," said Laurine Garaude, Director of Television Division at Reed MIDEM, which organises MIPTV. "We are proud that MIPTV can play its part in supporting the French television industry and promoting French programming on the international market via the 2019 Country of Honour project."
••••"Today, French producers and distributors are thriving in the full spectrum of programme sectors and are achieving strong ratings wherever their shows are broadcast," said Hervé Michel, President, TV France International. "TV France International is proud to support France, MIPTV Country of Honour, we welcome initiatives that raise the profile of France's television industry and support sales of French programmes throughout the world. And so do distributors' syndicate SEDPA, producers' syndicate USPA, SPFA, SPECT and SATEV.
•••• Marco Bassetti, CEO, Banijay Group: "France is our home. Ten years ago, our story started here and we have since gone on to build a business which houses iconic national talent including Nagui and Cyril Hanouna. Now standing as the leading production entity in the French market, we are thrilled to see the country recognised at this year's MIPTV and look forward to celebrating the nation's achievements at the market."
••••France is consistently among the leading delegations at MIPTV with 535 companies and 1,420 participants attending the 2018 edition. French exhibiting companies already signed up for MIPTV 2019 include: ARTE France, Cyber Group Studios, Gaumont, Federation Entertainment, France tv distribution, M6 Metropole Television, Millimages, Newen Distribution, Canal+ Group, TF1 Studio, Wild Bunch, About Premium Content Xilam Animation, Banijay, Mediawan, Orange, Eurodata TV Worldwide, Lagardère Studios, PGS Entertainment, Superights, Thema, Futurikon, Mediatoon, ZED….
••••Other previous Countries of Honour and Country Focuses at both MIPTV and MIPCOM include China, Russia, Japan, Germany, Turkey, Nordics (Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden), Mexico, Israel, and Argentina.

• 115- Berlin Film Festival (Feb 7-17) opened with a tribute
to Dieter Kosslick, the festival's director since 2001, where he received a standing ovation, as he took to the stage to welcome international stars, filmmakers, and cinephiles for the final time as festival director. The 69th Berlinale opened with a 1920s-style serenade dedicated to Kosslick by popular German singer Max Raabe and entertainer Anke Engelke, who also hosted the ceremony.
•••• Monika Grütters, Germany's culture and media commissioner heaped praise on Kosslick for his 18 years at the head of one of the world's largest film festivals.
•••• Grütters continued her praise: "The most beautiful compliment, ladies and gentlemen, does not come from those privileged to sit here tonight but from those who stand for hours to buy tickets. The most beautiful compliment is 350,000 tickets sold every year."
•••• "Our Berliner Bear in gold and silver, our beautiful trophy, is our most famous ambassador of film, but only one person can compete with him. That's you, dear Dieter. And at the opening of your 18th and our 69th Berlinale, you deserve to be in the spotlight," she said.
•••• The festival opened with the world premiere of Lone Scherfig's "The Kindness of Strangers," a contemporary drama following disparate characters as they all struggle to survive in a New York City winter and find laughter, love, and kindness in each other.
•••• Also attending were The Berlinale's new director team, Carlo Chatrian and Mariette Rissenbeek, who will assume the reins next year.
•••• About: The Berlin International Film Festival also called the Berlinale, is a film festival held annually in Berlin, Germany. Founded in West Berlin in 1951, the festival has been held every February since 1978 and is one of the "Big Three" alongside the Venice Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival.
•••• The Golden Bear (German: Goldener Bär) is the highest prize awarded for the best film at the Berlin International Film Festival.
•••• With around 300,000 tickets sold and 500,000 admissions each year, it has the largest public attendance of any annual film festival. Up to 400 films are shown in several sections across cinematic genres. Around twenty films compete for the festival's top awards, the Golden Bear and several Silver Bears.

Super Bowl LIII: Patriots defeat Rams 13-3 in defensive struggle to win franchise's sixth championship

Los Angeles Times' Super Bowl Front Page "Lambs not Rams" went Viral that said it all.

101- Rams head to Super Bowl 53 after defeating Saints 26-23 in NFC Championship game -
They'll play the New England Patriots at Super Bowl
Overtime field goal sends Rams to Super Bowl: Until it mattered, the Los Angeles Rams never led against the New Orleans Saints in the NFC conference championship game in the Superdome, rocking with fans.
•••• And when it did, in overtime, Greg Zuerlein hit a 57-yard field goal that stunned the Saints and silenced the crowd, sending Jared Goff and the Rams into the Feb. 3 Super Bowl against either the Chiefs or Patriots.
image-+00TCS/JaredGoff200w.jpg•••• "Unbelievable," was the only word Goff could come up with in his postgame interview. "[We were] just trying to score, get into field goal range . . . C.J. [Anderson] was running the ball well and I expect Todd [Gurley] to have a [heck] of a game in the Super Bowl. I can't believe I'm even saying that. Unbelievable."

Jared Goff - June 2016
-- first overall pick by the Los Angeles Rams in the 2016 NFL Draft.

•••• At the biggest moment of the game, the Rams' John Johnson came up with the big play, intercepting a deflected Drew Brees pass at the L.A. 46-yard line with 13:56 left. That set up Zuerlein for the game-winner with 11:47 left. The victory by the Rams is the first in the conference title game by the road team in six years, but it wasn't without controversy.
•••• At issue was a no-call on what appeared to be pass interference on a Brees pass to Tommylee Lewis. It was broken up by Nickell Robey-Coleman, with Fox's Mike Pereira, Dean Blandino and Troy Aikman calling for a pass-interference flag. The Saints ended up settling for field goal with just under 2 minutes left.
•••• Overtime! A 48-yard field goal attempt by Greg Zuerlein with 19 seconds remaining tied the score and sent the title game into overtime. (Game tied at 23-23, 0:19 remaining in fourth quarter)
•••• A bad call? At the worst time, officiating becomes the focus. The Rams defense had become pesky, holding the Saints scoreless in a six-possession stretch of the second half when Drew Brees did that thing he does, finding Ted Ginn on a 43-yard pass with just over 2 minutes left, giving the Saints a first down at the Rams' 13-yard line. The Los Angeles defense stiffened and, on third down, Brees's pass to Tommylee Lewis was broken up by Nickell Robey-Coleman, with Fox's Mike Pereira, Dean Blandino and Troy Aikman calling for a pass-interference flag. The result? The Saints, who probably should have just gone to a power running game there, settled for a 31-yard field goal with 1:41 left.

GaryRegisJSeverino200w.jpg113- Eyewitness News celebrates 50th anniversary. - By Gary Sunkin
Phote LtoR: TVI's Gary Sunkin; Regis Philbin, John Severino

January 6th 1969 marked the First Broadcast KABC -TV of Eyewitness News following the departure of news director/Baxter Ward.
•••• Legendary Al Primo launched the Eyewitness News format in Philadelphia (the name itself had been used for some years before that by Westinghouse's TV stations for its local newscasts, and in fact was first used by KYW itself in 1959 when it was based in Cleveland, Ohio). In this format, which was meant to be faster in pace than the standard newscast format (in which an anchor simply read headlines), a reporter in the field would be the "eyewitness" to a news event to the anchor in the studio and the viewer at home. The anchors became personalities instead of presenters with the introduction of banter, or "happy talk" as it was named by Al Primo. Anchors would give their own personal comments in between stories to let viewers know their personalities.
•••• Primo also chose the musical score from the Tar Sequence in the movie Cool Hand Luke (composed by Lalo Schifrin) as the news theme to WABC's Eyewitness News, a move which also exposed many other TV stations in the United States (and by extension, their viewers) to Schifrin's work.
•••• Eyewitness News is a style of news broadcasting that is used by local television stations in different markets around the world. It refers to a particular style of television newscast with an emphasis on visual elements and action video. It replaced the traditional "man-on-camera" newscast.

115- Michael Jackson Docu
stirs controversy at Sundance Film Festival,
"Leaving Neverland" premiered at the Sundance Film Festival (Jan. 24 - Feb. 3) and is set to air on HBO this spring in a two part series that explores allegations of sexual misconduct by the legendary singer. Meanwhile the Michael Jackson Estate is denouncing the documentary's allegations.
MICHAEL JACKSON'S FAMILY MAKES STATEMENT
Michael Jackson is our brother and son. We are furious that the media, who without a shred of proof or single piece of physical evidence, chose to believe the word of two admitted liars over the word of hundreds of families and friends around the world who spent time with Michael, many at Neverland, and experienced his legendary kindness and global generosity.

Cars, The Internet of Things, and more at the International Consumers Electronics Show (CES,) Jan. 8-11, Las Vegas
"Things that didn't Internet before are now Internetting."
As CES ballooned into an overwhelming crush of products, in recent years, longtime attendees griped about too much stuff and not enough substance.
•• There was less emphasis on the typical CES electronics like televisions, tablets and smartphones, and more attention paid to industry-changing innovations such as connected, electric and driverless cars; the Internet of Things; drones; virtual reality and gaming; and entertainment tech. To reflect that shift, the Consumer Electronics Assn., which produces CES, ind 2016 changed its name to the Consumer Technology Assn. -- a symbolic move.

+101- Cory Meets JiangZemin, former President PRC
• • Back in the 80s, as a goodwill ambassador representing the U.S.A., Troy Cory and his back-up dancers and singers, "The Brooke Sisters," were the first entertainers from the United States to appear in a full staged program in the People's Republic of China during the Shanghai TV Festival, and televised on China's National Television (CCTV), viewed by over 300 million people.• •
• • It was there Cory met Jiang Zemin, then mayor of Shanghai, and who later became the 5th President of the People's Republic of China. The '88 Shanghai Concert was the beginnings of Troy's concert tours in China for the next two decades. The concerts, just to name a few, included the following cities: Shanghai, Beijing, Anshan, Harbin, Fuzhou and and Tsingtao (Qingdao)

101- Cory's Road to China;

•••Troy Cory was among the first international entertainers and the first American entertainer to perform in the People's Republic of China, beginning in 1988. In itself a notable culture-historical feat, in view of China's closed door policies of the late 70s and well into the 80s. The PRC's administrative climate in comparison is much less restrictive now and China's open door policy enables many entertainers to introduce themselves to the populace Chinese audiences.
