At the Las Vegas National Film
Association of Theatre Owners Convention the
news is currently that the Hollywood top seven
studios rose 8% last year to 82.1 million said
Jack Valente who heads the Motion Picture
Association, the industry key trade group that
breaks out 54.8 million to producers and movies
and 27.3 million for prints in advertising. The
figures were just released at the SHOWEST annual
convention for theatre operators.
The costs have been soaring since the late
1970's with special effects budgets climbing and
stars scaling to 20 million or more per film.
The main feature at the west coast show was
broadband the hot new topic of
telecommunications and the broadbandwagon. The
Western Cable Show kicked off the 21st century
with the recognition of the value role that
broadband now plays both in the world of cable
and the larger world of telecommunications.
Barry Diller president & CEO of USA Cable
and Films plus the Home Shopping Network and
former studio chief of 20th Century Fox studios
was one of the keynote speaker panelists at the
Western Cable Show 2000 in December.
Thanks to Lew Wasserman President of
Universal, who talked him into an appointment at
his offices in West Hollywood Larry asked
this question in the audience on the mic to Mr.
Valente, he also went on stage and asked Mr.
Valente: "Is it true what the Hollywood Reporter
and Variety said &endash; that when president
Clinton retires he will become his 2nd assistant
and later after you retire will become the head
of the Motion Picture Association? And Mr.
Valente quoted "It's a Hollywood fantasy." Jack
has just received Lifetime Membership in the
Hollywood Motion Picture Producer's Association.
He's the only third man in motion picture
association history to become its leader.

of Valente's interesting history Asking
him about his 51 armed combat missions as a
pilot commander in the army during World War II
and if it was true that Valente did in fact fly
on AirForce One back when vice president Lyndon
B. Johnson was being sworn in as president on
November 22 1963 the day that John F. Kennedy
was assassinated. Valente replied that yes he
was and that he was also the first hired
aassistant of L.B. Johnson. On June 1966 Valente
resigned from the Hollywood Post to join the
Motion Picture Association of America and to
become only the third man to be it's leader. His
agency was in charge of presidential visits
during the Kennedy presidency and V.P. Lyndon B.
Johnson. Larry also asked Valente what he felt
about digital theatre and are they HERE. Valente
