Lary
Leverett "MR.
HOLLYWOOD'S" 50 YEARS IN SHOW BIZ
- By Donna Jeffries. -----This
year happens to be the 50th
Anniversary of Larry-leave it
to-Leverett's one-man launch and
assault on the entertainment
business. The man who would later
come to be known as "Mr.
Hollywood," started out his
career by working with the
Chicago Tribune at age 16 as an
assistant on the city desk. Larry
then went on to work as a
man-Friday on the NBC radio "Jack
Eigen Show." He also worked for a
few years booking talent at the
world famous "Chez Paris"
nightclub.
-----Ever
diversifying his talents in the
Biz - as an actor Larry played a
reporter in Humphrey Bogart's
last film "The Harder They Fall."
In 1956 Larry was rushed to
Hollywood with Tower Ticker
Columnist, Herb Lyon to do the
Clark Gable, Doris Day film
"Teacher's Pet." In 1957 Larry
was cast along with Carey Grant
in the Alfred Hitchcock classic
film "North by NorthWest" which
was shot partly in Chicago where
Larry was also responsible for
casting the Extras. At that time,
Larry was working for Mike Todd
on the world premiere of the
motion picture epic "Around the
World in 80 Days." In 1960 Larry
arranged and set up a special
appearance by the jazz singer
Toni Lee Scott for the Ralph
Edwards show "This Is Your
Life."
-----At
age 25 Larry was hired as the
Press Chief for the "Rat Pack" -
Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy
Davis Jr. and their engagement at
the world famous "Villa Venice"
outside of Chicago in Northbrook.
He was also personal press
representative in Chicago for
Agnes Moorehead, Joey Lewis,
Hedda Hopper, Joe E. Brown,
Johnny "Tarzan" Weismuller, Henny
Youngman, George Jessel, Tricia
Morrison, Ray Anthony's Band, Sy
Zitner's Band, and Billy "Old
Black Magic" Daniels for 22
years. He also represented over
200 nightclubs in an 11-year
period, including the Sherman
House Hotel. With Larry's
popularity and reputation in the
business building steadily he
eventually ended up with his own
radio talk show on WEAW in
Chicago called "Spotlight on
Talent."
-----In
his illustrious career Larry has
represented a bevy of blonde
bombshells including actresses
Clio Moore, Jayne Mansfield
(appearing on the "Midnight
Ticker" talk show), and British
actress Diana Dors (exclusive
nightclub engagement in Chicago).
Larry worked on the special
Halloween episode of the
Television series "Route 66",
interviewing guest stars - Boris
Karloff, Peter Lorre, Lon Chaney
Jr., Conrad Nagel, and series
stars Martin Milner, and George
Maharis. He also went on location
as press man with the show in
Cleveland, and Indianapolis. Larry
moved to Hollywood in 1964 and
began work on publicity for
Robert Wise's "The
Sound of Music" and "The Sand
Pebbles." He also worked on
Robert Aldridges' "The Flight of
the Phoenix." In 1965 he was
chosen as the Advanced Road
Manager for the T.V. tour of the
King Family throughout the United
States and Canada. Larry then
joined producer, writer, and
director Charles Martin at Samuel
Goldwyn Studios in Hollywood
where he worked as assistant
producer on the film "If He
Hollers Let Him Go" (which was
the first of a genre of popular
black-oriented films), starring
Raymond St. Jacques, Kevin
McCarthy, and Barbara McNair.
-----
At the
same time, Larry worked with T.V.
broadcasting pioneer Bill Welsh,
and honorary mayor Monty Hall
along with the rest of the
Hollywood Chamber of Commerce
members in putting together the
famous Hollywood Star Walk of
Fame. Larry was also responsible
for singer Billy Daniel's
receiving his "Star", as well as
entertainer Scatman Crothers, who
co-starred in Freddie Prinze's
"Chico and the Man" T.V.
series.
-----Larry
also set up the Grand Marshalls
and arranged for the antique cars
- including Harold Lloyd's
classic Rolls Royce - for the
star-studded "Hollywood Christmas
Parade." Larry also handled the
media and public relations
department of the Harold Lloyd
estate for several years. He
later became the P.R. Director
for the Miss California, U.S.A.,
and Miss Universe Pageants.
Personally representing Miss
Universe in her California
appearance, Larry was in charge
of setting up personal
appearances and television
interviews. Always surrounded by
beautiful women, lucky Larry also
went on to become a talent
coordinator and trainer for the
Los Angeles RAMS
cheerleaders.
-----Larry's
warm-hearted, compassionate, and
respecting nature towards women
has always earned him a special
place in the hearts of all the
talented young ladies he has
nurtured over the years. Many who
have gone on to become extremely
successful in their careers
thanks to the encouragement,
persistence and love of Larry.
Consequently, he almost always
has a lovely lady by his side
wherever he goes - much to the
jealousy of his fellow showbiz
colleagues! But it is the karma
of his inspiring ways, and spirit
of giving, that unintentionally
seems to always catapult this
soul-rich angel of a man into one
golden opportunity after another.
From literally putting Frank
Sinatra and the Rat Pack on the
map - to having Bridgette Bardot
offer him to spend the weekend
with her! From having President
Reagan ask him for a job - to
having the Pope make a special
detour just to meet him, and
being blessed by the Dalai Lamai!
His "Sight Vision Energy"
instincts are definitely charged
up!
-----As
a long time publicist and manager
he does it the old fashioned,
tried-but-true way he's the
Tom Parker of our times. Being a
relative of famous carney man
P.T. Barnum, he's used to
flamboyance. And whenever there's
a seemingly impossible job to be
done - never fear Larry-leave it
to-Leverett is there!

Well,
it's official -- Tom Cruise is
set to star in
the "War of the Worlds" remake
and shooting will begin in
November and you heard it
here first, many, many months
ago! Larry and I have not only
been covering the progress of
this project but we also covered
the special 50th Anniversary Gala
and screening of the original
sci-fi classic that took place at
The Vista Theatre on November 25,
2003 -- the exact date that the
film originally
premiered. Beverly
Hills' best kept secret is Sandra
Piller and Larry
Flynt's Supper Cabaret
Club.

On
Wednesday nights you can catch
gorgeous actress and dancer
Sandra Giles. She used to cruise
around Hollywood and Beverly
Hills in her pink '57 T-Bird with
the pink mink interior, and now
the Eternal Starlet, gorgeous,
Sandra can be seen at Larry
Flynt's Supper Cabaret Club.
---
Sandra,
who was the star of many hit
musical films of the 50's and
'60's, not only got to party with
Sammy Davis Jr. and James Dean,
but she also dated Frank Sinatra,
Omar Shariff, Michael Caine,
Trini Lopez, David Janssen, and
Elvis Presley! Yes, Sandra knew
how to have a good time and she's
still partying! Sandra can also
be seen at the Marina City Club
in Marina del Rey on Friday,
Sept. 3 at 7:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.
Sandra's party promises to have
plenty of dancing and lots of
great music.

West
& East Coast Swing, along
with Salsa, Disco, the Hustle and
much more will keep the crowd
grooving all night. Complimentary
dance lessons will be conducted
by Leba. Music will be provided
by D.J. Ceasar.

Some
of the western personalities that
have passed away since the last
Golden Boot Awards were also
honored at this years' event.
They included Charles Bronson,
Jack Elam, Ronald Reagan and Les
Tremayne (who also starred in
"War of the Worlds"). In the
early 1980s, veteran movie
sidekick Pat Buttram first
conceived the Golden Boot Award
as a way to recognize the
achievements of cowboy film
heroes and heroines, as well as
writers, directors, stunt people
and character actors who had
significant involvement in film
and TV westerns.

-----Just
because we like him so much we
are going to add this quick quote
from George Lucas regarding his
popular "Star Wars" films (which
Donna doesn't like by the way) --
Lucas says, "Popcorn pictures
have always ruled. Why do people
go see them? Why is the public so
stupid? That's not my fault."

LARRY
LEVERETT A Loving Tribute to Mr.
Hollywood By Donna
Jeffries.
I am honored and blessed to have
known this compassionate,
warm-hearted man who I can truly
say was the most upbeat positive
minded human being I have ever
met. Larry Leverett, known for
the last several years as "Mr.
Hollywood", died quietly of a
heart attack in his downtown
Ventura apartment on October 1 at
the age of 71. Larry enjoyed an
illustrious and quite varied
career in the entertainment
business for over fifty years. He
was a living legend who seemed to
have lived a dozen lifetimes
rolled into one. His enthusiasm
for life was infectious. He is
dearly missed by all those who
have known and loved him.
During the course of his
lifetime, Larry acquired a wide
circle of friends and
acquaintances, a vast social
network of people that included
everyone from producers and
waitresses, to bartenders and the
pope, from presidents and
transients, to celebrities and
the homeless. It didn't matter
who they were, Larry treated
everyone with the same level of
humanity and respect. "They don't
make them like Larry anymore",
said one of his dearest friends
Lori Murphy, upon learning of his
passing. "He was the kind of man
that knew the true definition of
a friend."
Larry led a fascinating life.
There was always a story about
the past or a new adventure to
talk about; something
extraordinary was always
happening with Larry and he loved
sharing it with others. Larry
grew up in Chicago and began his
career working with the Chicago
Tribune in the 1950's as an
assistant on the city desk where
he frequently found himself
working in the same circles with
legendary entertainment columnist
Irv "Kup" Kupcinet.
He began working in the movie
industry doing publicity work and
casting background talent for
productions shooting in Chicago,
including "North by Northwest",
the Hitchcock classic starring
Cary Grant. He also worked for
awhile as a publicist
successfully promoting several
popular nightclubs and hotels in
the Chicago area and booking
celebrity engagements. His
outstanding reputation did not go
unnoticed, and he was soon hired
as press chief for the famous Rat
Pack (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin
and Sammy Davis Jr.). Larry
eventually moved to Hollywood in
1964 and worked as an assistant
producer on several film projects
at Goldwyn Studios. During his
years in "Tinsel Town" Larry lent
a professional hand to many
historical events throughout the
years, including the first
official lighting of the famous
Hollywood sign, which he attended
along side legendary actress
Gloria Swanson. Larry was also
responsible for the unveiling of
several Stars on the Hollywood
Walk of Fame honoring various
celebrities that he
represented. He
was a constant fixture in
Hollywood for forty years
covering the entertainment news
and interviewing stars and
celebrities
for several popular local
magazines and newspapers as well
as continuing his public
relations work. He popped up
anywhere and everywhere, and was
spotted quite frequently on
various TV news shows, often
making an unplanned appearance.
He just always happened to be at
the right place at the right
time.
Throughout the years, Larry also
hosted and produced several radio
and cable TV shows, including the
popular "Hollywood Beat" show
which featured interviews with
such legendary filmmakers as
Motion Picture Academy
President/Oscar winning director
Robert Wise (The Sound of Music,
West Side Story), and Oscar
nominated director Peter
Bogdanovich (The Last Picture
Show, Paper Moon). Many of the
guests on "Hollywood Beat" were
longtime friends of Larry's,
including Wise, who Larry had
originally befriended while doing
publicity work for him back in
Chicago.
Larry's longtime friend, actress
Ann Robinson (War of the Worlds,
Imitation of Life) was very
saddened by the news of his
passing. "He was such a dear
friend. He knew everybody, and
was so connected to the Hollywood
of old. I'm going to miss him
dearly." Larry did a lot of
publicity work for several
well-known celebrities and
filmmakers throughout the years
including Mike Todd, Hedda
Hopper, Joe E. Brown, Jayne
Mansfield, Johnny "Tarzan"
Weismuller, Henny Youngman, the
King Family, Billy "Old Black
Magic" Daniels, and the late
actor Lee Van Cleef, whom Larry
maintained a close friendship
with for many years. Van Cleef's
wife Barbara expressed her
feelings upon hearing of Larry's
passing, "He was a bright spot in
the world. His positive attitude
never let him down. I'm glad I
knew him." She reminisced about
how Larry was instrumental in
having Van Cleef honored with one
of the very first Golden Boot
Awards, which, in the western
entertainment genre, is the
equivalency of winning an Oscar.
Barbara also fondly recalled how
much she and Lee enjoyed spending
Thanksgiving holidays with Larry
at their home each year. Another
dear friend of Larry's, actress
Sharman Kanter recalled, "He was
one of a kind. He exuded a joyful
exuberance that was uplifting to
numerous people he came into
contact with."
Among his many talents, Larry had
a special knack for being able to
recognize and appreciate the
special qualities in everyone he
met. He became somewhat of a
champion of the underdog in many
ways. He enjoyed encouraging
people to go after their dreams,
and steering them in the right
direction whenever he could,
looking for nothing in return.
"I'm a disciple of the arts" he
would say, "richness of the soul
is where real wealth lies". Larry
was a genuine people person.
Connecting with people on a
meaningful level, creating a
positive impact in whatever way
he could, and sharing the
compassion for the "pathos of
life" was what really mattered to
him. He encouraged all he met to
reach for their dreams and
celebrate their unique
individuality. "You're only
somebody when you're like nobody;
otherwise you're just like
everybody else" he would say!
Although these last four years he
was living miles away from
Hollywood, his affinity for show
biz never ceased and the two of
us, "partners in crime" as we
affectionately called each other,
would cover local entertainment
industry events such as the Ojai
and Santa Barbara film festivals
for various publications. We
would also occasionally venture
back to our old stomping grounds
in Los Angeles, where we first
met, to cover the American Film
Market, the Environmental Media
Awards, and the Genesis Awards
among other events. Of course we
would always run into old pals of
his wherever our journey took us.
Over the years, Larry has
introduced me to everyone from
Jack Lemmon and Billy Wilder, to
George Lucas and Ted Turner, from
Charlton Heston and Faye Dunaway,
to Taylor Hackford and Tippi
Hedron. I certainly can't say
it's been dull!
Indeed, Larry was a virtual Who's
Who of Hollywood. You could
literally name any well-known
person in the entertainment world
and he would have either known
them personally, or been
connected with them in one way or
another, and then he would
promptly launch into a
fascinating story and tell you
all about it! Of course, since
Ventura is quite a ways from
Hollywood, when Larry first moved
here and started telling his
stories, some eyes began to roll.
But once he whipped out his
cherished photo albums and the
doubters saw the proof, he left
their mouths dropping wide open.
His photo albums were indeed
something to behold and contained
striking images of Larry at
various Hollywood events and
awards shows, either shaking
hands or hugging, everyone from
President Ford to Harrison Ford,
from Bette Davis to Heather
Locklear, from Frank Sinatra to
the Lone Ranger!
Although Larry was truly larger
than life, he wasn't perfect, and
he'd be the first to admit his
faults. Some might say he talked
a little too much (but he had so
much to share), and he could act
like a big irresponsible kid at
times (but heck, he left home at
age 12). When you confronted him
he would apologize profusely,
promise to get his act together,
and those twinkling smiling eyes
of his would win you over in a
flash. Yes, he had his ways. And
oh, how he loved the ladies.
Although he had a keen eye and
profound appreciation for
glamour, Larry proudly described
himself as a "platonic Casanova".
Nurturing career dreams,
encouraging self esteem, and
connecting with women on a
"higher level" was all that was
on his agenda. "Most men can't do
this" he boasted. But of course,
he did enjoy his hugs and was
very happy to be a recipient
whenever he got the chance!
Many of his fellow residents at
the Ventura Inn, where he lived,
miss not seeing him walking
through the hallways or crossing
the lobby sharing his stories and
wisdoms of life with them like he
so often would do. According to
resident and friend David Scott,
"Larry was the Wizard of Oz of
show business. Like a mirage made
real. He was a free beautiful
show. I didn't need to go to the
movies, I had Larry."
Larry loved Ventura, and I
believe the years he spent here
were some of his finest. If he
wasn't strolling along the beach
"talking to the seagulls", he was
walking his beat along Main
Street, leisurely stopping in to
say Hi to pals at his favorite
shops and restaurants, and
smiling to everyone he passed
along the way. "... People loved
him here. He was like a huge
encyclopedia of Hollywood. He
knew so many people" says Ventura
shopkeeper and friend, Tamara
Carlson. Those closest to him are
thankful that much of Larry's
fascinating past was the subject
of a recently produced TV show,
slated for the Ventura cable
market. That came on the heels of
several other recent ironic
tributes highlighting his life
and career. You could say he left
on a very high note, and natural
ham that he was, he was really
getting a kick out of it. Larry's
friend and the producer of the
tribute show, Randall Richman
says, "There was something about
Larry that endeared you to him.
Always gracious, an interesting
man with lots of stories to tell,
I am glad we got an interview
with him before he passed. He'll
be sorely missed." ...And indeed
he will. I am proud to have been
able to call him my friend and
partner for eighteen years. He'll
be greatly missed, not just by
me, but by countless others whose
lives he has also touched. God
bless you Larry. We will always
remember and love you.
