The movie industry is made up of
hundreds of independent motion picture
production and distribution reaches its
peak every year atthe American Film Market
(AFM), the world's largest film market.
Founded in 1981, the AFM is a pivotal
destination for independent film companies
and business people from all over the
world. Each year, more than 8,000 industry
professionals converge in Santa Monica for
eight days of deal-making, screenings,
seminars, premieres, networking and
parties.
The AFM offers unique accessibility
to the ever-changing global motion picture
industry. Unlike a film festival, the AFM
is a marketplace where production and
distribution deals are closed. In just
eight days, more than $800 million in
deals will be sealed on both completed
films and those that haven't started
shooting yet. Participants come from more
than 70 countries and include acquisition
and development executives, agents,
attorneys, directors, distributors,
financiers, film commissioners, producers,
writers, the world's press, and all those
who provide services to the motion picture
industry.
The
AFM is produced by the Independent Film
& Television Alliance (IFTA), the
trade association representing the world's
producers and distributors of independent
motion pictures and television
programs.
Films
available at this year's AFM can be found
in the The Film Catalogue,, IFTA's
comprehensive and authoritative online
source which gives up-to-the-minute
details on nearly 6,000 independent motion
pictures, and is regarded as the most
extensive and significant online film
resource for distributors and buyers
around the
globe.
The
Film Catalogue allows users to explore the
database of films by a myriad of search
options, including language, production
status, year of completion, budget,
director, cast, company, title and genre,
and is available in English, Italian,
Spanish, German, French, Portuguese,
Japanese, Mandarin and Korean.
The site operates on a year-round
basis and highlights market line-ups at
AFM, EFM, Filmart and Cannes.
This
year's AFM highlights include --
:
More than 800 screenings of more than 400
films.
30 films screened every two
hours.
More than 400 production/distribution
companies
exhibiting.
The AFM Conference Series, a five-day
conference program covering topics
spanning from treatment to screen and
featuring the industry's global thought
leaders, decision makers and experts, and
14 intimate, interactive and informative
Industry Conversationsled by visionaries,
trendsetters and experts.

The business of independent motion
picture production and distribution - a
truly collaborative process - reaches its
peak every year at the American Film
Market. Over 8,000 industry leaders
converge in Santa Monica for eight days of
deal-making, screenings, seminars, red
carpet premieres, networking and parties.
Participants come from over 70 countries
and include acquisition and development
executives, agents, attorneys, directors,
distributors, festival directors,
financiers, film commissioners, producers,
writers, the world’s press all those
who provide services to the motion picture
industry.
Founded in 1981, the American Film
Market (AFM) has grown steadily to become
the premiere global marketplace where
Hollywood’s decision-makers and
trendsetters all gather under one roof.
Unlike a film festival, the AFM is a
marketplace where production and
distribution deals are closed. In just
eight days, more than $800 million in
deals will be sealed — on both
completed films and those that haven’t
started shooting yet — making AFM
the must-attend industry event.
The AFM transforms Santa Monica. The
Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel and the Le
Merigot Beach Hotel are converted into a
busy marketplace. All 23 screens on the
Santa Monica Promenade and the surrounding
community become AFM screening rooms for
the entire eight-day event and eight
digital and video screening rooms are
added just for the AFM. Participants may
view more than 900 screenings of
approximately 500 films - 31 new films
every two hours - the majority of them
world or U.S. premieres. Titles range from
big budget blockbusters that will be
released by the major studios in the U.S.,
to lower budget art and genre films
recognized at international film
festivals, all destined for theaters and
television around the world.
With 8,000 attendees, 900 screenings,
and seminars programmed by leading
industry organizations, the American Film
Market continues to be the pivotal
destination for independent filmmakers and
business people from all over the
world.

A
h h h . . . Fall in Cannes
no matter if it's in the Spring or Fall,
there's the mild breezes' blow as the warm
Mediterranean sun smiles over this
beautiful spot on the Cote d'Azur. There
you can feel a timeless sensuality,
assuaging a nostalgia for the
Mediterranean which since as far back as
the 16th century has been a constant theme
in many a Northern European's
life.
"Now give us lands
where the olives grow," Cried the North to
the South, "Where the sun with a golden
mouth can blow blue bubbles of grapes down
the vineyard row!" Cried the North to the
South. (to borrow a phrase from the
English writer Elizabeth Barret
Browning).
"Cannes," wrote
Charles Lentheric, the indispensable and
erudite historian of maritime Provence, in
1880, "is a town where you feel no need to
work," and "where the inhabitants were not
interested in the world that lay beyond
their shady gardens, or the sheltered
balconies of their hotels."
Now the world has
come to Cannes, chosen it to be their
Mediterranean queen for its annual events,
and when you stroll along the Croisette on
some warm April day you will hardly share
Mr. Lenteric's sentiments. Voila! Cannes!
It has emerged so
cosmopolitan.
