By: Gary Sunkin
Back in 1949, when the
Story broke that a
little girl was trapped
in a well in San Marino
thousands of Angelenos
snapped on their
Television sets. They
kept them on for the
next 27 hours. Stan
Chambers, one of the two
reporters with Bill
Welch on the scene for
KTLA-TV Channel 5's
unusual broadcast,
recalled years later of
this role in TV News
History. "It was then
that I decided that I
really wanted to be in
News."
Stan
Chambers was with KTLA 5
News for 63 Years and
covered over 22,000
stories for the Los
Angeles TV station from
fires, floods,plane
crashes, to car chases,
and more. Among the
major stories Chambers
reported were the 1961
Bel-Air Fires/Brentwood
Fire, the 1963, Baldwin
Hills dam disaster, the
1965 Watts Riots, the
1968 assassination of
Senator Robert F.
Kennedy, the 1971 Sylmar
Earthquake and the 1984
Olympics.
Before
he retired in 2010, he
received the longtime
broadcaster for the
Society of Professional
Journalists' Helen
Thomas Lifetime
Achievement Award in
2006. His many honors
include numerous local
Emmy and Golden Mike
award, a star on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame
and a building at KTLA
named after him.
Chambers
passed away on February
13th, 2015 in this home
in Holmby Hills,
California. He died at
10:30 am at 91 years
old. He was a gentleman,
and one of the nicest
persons, always treating
people with respect. I
had known Stan Chambers
for about 50 years.

Gary
Owens whose deep voice
was one of the most
famous in show business,
was a familiar part of
radio, TV and movies for
more than six
decades.
He hosted thousands of
radio programs, appeared
on scores of TV shows,
including Lucille Ball
and Bob Hope specials,
did commercials and also
voiced hundreds of
animated characters.
On
"Laugh-In," the 1968-73
sketch show starring Dan
Rowan and Dick Martin,
Owens was shown on
camera in a parody of an
old-school announcer,
with his hand cupped
firmly over his ear. But
his voice was always the
real thing, rich and
authoritative.
Owens
had "such a great voice,
so smooth. That was his
real voice, even if he
was ordering in a
restaurant," said Tom
Kenny, the "SpongeBob
SquarePants" voice actor
who worked with Owens on
cartoons including
"Dexter's
Laboratory."
"Laugh-In"
creator and producer
George Schlatter, who
knew Owens but said he
hired him for the show
after hearing his voice
boom through the Smoke
House restaurant
restroom, called him a
"lovely, lovely
man."
"He
had a whimsical, fey
sense of humor and he
brought a lot to
'Laugh-In' in the way of
thoughts, words and
jokes," Schlatter
said.
Given
Owens' jam-packed
resume, was he a
workaholic?
"Gary
did not work. Gary
played," Schlatter said.
"He was a very charming,
creative, witty guy who
had a good time."
Owens, a native of
Plankinton, South
Dakota, was inducted
into the National Radio
Hall of Fame in
Washington D.C. in 1995
and into the National
Television Hall of Fame
in 2001.
He arrived in Los
Angeles in 1961, and was
heard on a variety of
Los Angeles radio
stations including KMPC,
KFI and KIIS FM, and
hosted a national show
on The Music of Your
Life Network. He was
part of Armed Forces
Radio for 10 years and
host of the syndicated
"Soundtrack of the
60s."
"Beautiful downtown
Burbank"-
the catchphrase
coined by Owens on his
KMPC show, became a
favorite of Johnny
Carson on NBC's "Tonight
Show."
Owens'
animation voiceover
credits include "Space
Ghost," ''Blue Falcon"
and "Garfield and
Friends" and "The Ren
& Stimpy Show."
"National
Lampoon's European
Vacation," ''The Green
Hornet" and "Neil
Simon's Prisoner of
Second Avenue" were
among his film
credits.
Besides
son Scott, Owens is
survived by his wife of
57 years, Arleta, and
their son, Chris, a
musician and
producer.

The
idea
of a universal
translator has been a
longtime fixture in
science fiction and a
welcome tool for every
language student.
This app is an advanced
mobile-translation tool,
recognizing more than
three dozen languages.
But it's part of a much
bigger trend and, with
service like Microsoft's
Skype translator,
turning video chats into
real-time multilingual
conversations.
With the new app, you
are able to detect the
languages being spoken
so you don't even have
to press the translation
button on the phone each
time you talk. It's now
so much more
natural.
Google Translate has had
voice controls for a few
years, but the latest
version works more
seamlessly.
In
this version, the app is
supposed to pick up who
is talking based on the
language being spoken.
So, say you wanted to
order a slice of chicken
pizza in Italian. Using
the app, you could walk
into a pizza parlor,
and, with your lips at
an awkward proximity to
the phone's microphone,
make your request, after
which a robotic voice
would spit out the
question in Italian.
Then
let's say the guy behind
the counter asks if you
want extra cheese. He
could ask you that
question in Italian, and
the phone would relay it
in English. Respond
"Yes" or "No" in
English, and out comes
Italian again.
The
second tool is a visual
translator. People can
place signs or other
text in a phone's
viewfinder, similar to
the way they take a
photo, then receive an
instantaneous
translation on the
screen.
Google
is one of a number of
companies trying improve
and to fulfill the
promise of translation
technology. Skype,
Microsoft's video
calling service,
recently announced a new
feature that
simultaneously
translates calls between
English and Spanish
speakers.
Google
has been doing some form
of translation since
2001. The Google
Translate app now has 90
languages and some one
billion daily users.
Barak Turovsky, the
product leader for
Google Translate, said
that 95 percent of the
people who use Google's
translation technology
-- whether on a phone or
desktop -- live outside
the United States.
Technologically
speaking, Google
Translate works similar
to Google's famous
search engine. First it
uses software to "crawl"
the web in search of
documents that have been
translated between
languages, then it
performs a statistical
analysis of likely
translations.
For
instance, if the
computer sees that the
French word chien has
been translated to dog
on millions of occasions
and in varying contexts,
it reasons that chien
probably means dog, and
in the process "learns"
that word.
The
apps conversation
feature can handle 38
languages and is
now available for the
first time
on iOS.
The number of languages
is expected to grow.

///.
Intel
CEO Brian Krzanich showed off a
minuscule computer, dubbed Curie,
during a keynote speech at the
International Consumer
Electronics Show in Las Vegas. He
pulled a button off his blazer,
and chatted with someone through
a robot during the keynote
presentation.
The button stick let him unveil
Curie, a new computing module
that's the size of the button.
It's tiny size emphasizes it can
power a raft of new wearable
technology such as rings and
bracelets. Curie will become
available to wearable makers this
year.
Curie appeared much smaller than
a postage-stamp-size computer,
called Edison, that Krzanich
showed off at last year's CES,
and is a sign that hardware
makers are eager to build
wearable devices of all kinds. It
also points to the unwelcome size
of many existing smart watches
and smart glasses.
The world's largest chip maker
evidently sees wearables as one
of the most important categories
in consumer electronics. It's a
belief held by a lot of other
companies at CES, where gadgets
meant to be worn on the body or
clipped to clothing were all over
the show floor this year.
Intel's new device will include a
Bluetooth low-energy radio,
motion sensors, and components
designed to rapidly and precisely
differentiate between different
types of physical activity.
Krzanich said Curie will run "for
extended periods of time" on a
coin-size battery and would be
available in the second half of
the year.
In playing with multi-copter
drones from Ascending
Technologies, Krzanich showed how
Intel's depth-sensing camera
technology called RealSense
allows drones to fly themselves
without colliding into objects.
Stick one in between two people
and it will "bounce" back and
forth between them.
RealSense cameras can also be
attached to robots that have
video-chatting screens, meaning
you could walk down the hall and
the robot would tag along to keep
a conversation going. A Food
Network app coming in the spring
that uses RealSense will let
chefs flick through a recipe by
swiping their hand in the air or
saying voice commands. Attached
to a special jacket, RealSense
can give visually-impaired people
a sense of space.

Federal Communications Commission
Chairman Tom Wheeler strongly
hinted Wednesday at the Consumer
Electronics Show in Las Vegas
that he would propose net
neutrality rules next month that
treat broadband Internet service
providers as utilities subject to
much stricter regulation. That
however would clash with powerful
cable tv operators that offer
Internet access.
If Wheeler does propose to
reclassify ISPs and regulate them
under Title II of the
Communications Act, that would be
a stinging defeat for ISPs and a
victory for advocates of a
stringent approach to net
neutrality -- including President
Obama, who appointed Wheeler. It
also would almost certainly draw
a challenge in court and from the
Republican-controlled
Congress.
The commission is expected to
vote on a new set of net
neutrality rules Feb. 26.
Wheeler
initially resisted the idea of
bringing ISPs under Title II,
hoping to craft net neutrality
rules that continued to treat
ISPs as lightly regulated
"information services." His
original proposal would have
allowed ISPs to strike deals with
content companies and online
services as long as they were
"commercially reasonable."
This approach has drawn support
from ISPs, but many net
neutrality advocates argue that
it would allow broadband
providers to divide their
networks into fast and slow
lanes. That would give
deep-pocketed companies another
advantage over start-ups, harming
competition and innovation, these
critics say.
Wheeler, though, said he had an
"aha moment" over the summer when
he considered how the
Telecommunications Act of 1996
treated wireless phone networks.
That law applied Title II rules
to wireless companies, but
exempted them from most of its
provisions &emdash; most notably,
the ones requiring regulators to
approve changes in rates.
"Under that for the last 20
years, the wireless industry has
been monumentally successful,"
Wheeler said.
Meredith Baker a former
Republican FCC commissioner who
now heads the wireless phone
industry trade group pushed back
against Wheeler's comment.
"Comparisons to the regulatory
framework for mobile voice are
misplaced and irrelevant," she
said noting theat Congress
applied parts of Title II to the
mobile phone companies to reduce
their regulatory load.
Wheeler cannot now use that same
deregulatory tool to extend
regulations and government
intrusion where it has never been
before," she said.
A spokesman for he NTCA blasted
Wheeler's shift in strategy.

Gary Sunkin
Known as
the most favorite parade to kick
off the New Year for thousands of
spectators who lined the 5 1/2
mile parade route through
Pasadena. With temperatures
dipping into the 30s crowed
braved the chill for the 126th
Rose Parade, and embraced an
occasional beam of sunshine as
some were bundled up in blankets
and scarfs in grandstand seats
and choice spots on sidewalks
along the route. The 2015 theme
chowcased those who "elevate the
human spirit by who they are,
what they have done and what they
continue to do.
Every
year I revel in the excitement,
exuberance and optimism in the
air, and again this year's themed
"Inspiring Stories", didn't find
me disappointed.
"Inspiring Stories" was the
theme of the 126th Rose Parade
presented by Honda.
The very nature of this theme
allows us to reflect on and
appreciate many people around us
who elevate the human spirit by
who they are, what they have
done, and what they continue to
do. It pays tribute to those who
have loved unconditionally,
persevered courageously, endured
patiently and accomplished much
on behalf of others.
They may be "heroes" or "stars"
to some, but they don't seek such
titles. They may be kind,
resilient, free-spirited or
intensely focused, and though
different from one another, they
are all inspiring because they
have overcome obstacles, achieved
the unthinkable, given
immeasurably or sacrificed
unselfishly. Whether for justice,
for charity, or for any other
good, they do so humbly and with
resolve. It is the story of their
journey that enriches our lives
regardless of the fulfillment of
the purpose.
The people we select to be a part
of our year-long preparation for
America's New Year Celebration
&endash; whether it is part of
the Rose Parade or the Rose Bowl
Game -- will share their stories
in an effort to inspire
others.
GRAND MARSHAL OF THE 2015 ROSE
PARADE
Olympian and World War II
prisoner of war, Louis Zamperini,
a true American hero who survived
excessive hardships will be the
Grand Marshal for the 2015 Rose
Parade, themed "Inspiring
Stories." Despite Mr. Zamperini's
passing, the Tournament of Roses
is dedicated to honoring him as
the Grand Marshal of the 2015
Rose Parade.
Zamperini wrote his personal
history in the book "Devil at My
Heels" and his life story was
documented in the New York Times
best-selling book, "Unbroken,"
written by Pulitzer Prize winning
author, Laura Hillenbrand. In
December 2014, Universal Pictures
will release the movie,
"Unbroken," a feature adaptation
of the book. Born in 1917 to
Italian immigrants, Zamperini
moved to Torrance, California in
1919 and became a world-class
runner by the end of high school.
Qualifying to run in the 1936
Olympics in Berlin, he was
America's top finisher in the
5000 meter run, finishing the
final lap in 56 seconds and
causing Adolf Hitler to request a
personal meeting with the track
star.
During World War II, Zamperini
retired from running and joined
the U.S. Armed Forces as a
bombardier in the South Pacific.
While on a reconnaissance
mission, Zamperini's aircraft
crashed into the Pacific Ocean.
He and a crewmate survived for 47
days in shark-infested waters
eventually drifting into a
Japanese-controlled region where
he was held and tortured for
another two years. He survived
the brutality of the war and came
back to Southern California where
he was treated like a hero and
celebrated for his longevity.
Zamperini married, had a family
and started on a quest of
forgiveness as an inspirational
speaker -- meeting with and
forgiving the Japanese military
guards who tortured him.
Zamperini lectured around the
world on how to deal with stress,
the meaning of Olympic spirit and
the freedom he found through a
personal relationship with
God.
Louis Zamperini joined the
impressive ranks of those who
have fulfilled this role
before.

known as the oldest of bowls,
the Rose Bowl Game kicked off a
myriad college football legacies
in 1902. Since then, the game has
been home to 17 Heisman Trophy
winners, produced 29 national
champions, featured 203 consensus
All-Americans and honored 110
college football legends by
inducting them into the Rose Bowl
Hall of Fame.
The first Tournament of Roses
football game, which was the
first post-season football game
in the nation, was staged at
Tournament Park on January 1,
1902. The game matched the West
Coast's Stanford against
Midwestern Michigan. (The teams
would later become members of
today's Pac-12 and Big Ten
conferences, respectively.)
Michigan routed Stanford, 49-0,
prompting the football contest to
be replaced with Roman-style
chariot races inspired by the
literary classic Ben-Hur.
Football was permanently
reinstated as part of the
Tournament's traditions in
1916.
The exclusive agreement among the
Tournament of Roses Association,
the Big Ten Conference and the
Pac-12 Conference was born in
1946, and the first game played
under the agreement took place on
January 1, 1947. The pact is the
oldest intercollegiate postseason
bowl agreement between two major
conferences in the United
States.
This collegiate classic has been
the occasion of many firsts. The
Rose Bowl Game was the occasion
of first local radio broadcast of
an East-West bowl game in 1926,
the first transcontinental radio
broadcast of a sporting event in
1927, the first local telecast of
a college football game in 1948,
the first national telecast of a
college football game in 1952 and
the first coast-to-coast color
telecast of a collegiate football
game in 1962.
The
101st Rose Bowl Game will be a
College Football Playoff
semifinal game which will be held
on January 1, 2015 at the Rose

Hackers
breached the Internet Corporation
for Assigned Names and Numbers
(ICANN), the organization that
coordinates unique web addresses
all across the world, but luckily
didn't hit the Internet Assigned
Numbers Authority, an important
leg that keeps the Internet
running smoothly.
Attackers
used "spear fishing" to break
into the system in late November,
according to a post on ICANN's
website this week. Staffers
received email messages that
appeared to be coming from
ICANN's own domain; several ICANN
staffers' emails were
compromised.
"Based
on our investigation to date, we
are not aware of any other
systems that have been
compromised," ICANN's post read.
It credits the relative
insignificance of the attack to
the organization's beefed-up
security measures.
Attackers
gained administrative privileges
in a leg of ICANN called the
Centralized Zone Data Service
(CZDS), which they used to gather
a slew of information entered by
users: names, postal addresses,
emails and phone numbers.
Passwords were encrypted, but
ICANN has still deactivated all
CZDS passwords as a
precaution.
"We
believe these enhancements helped
limit the unauthorized access
obtained in the attack," ICANN
said. "Since discovering the
attack, we have implemented
additional security
measures."

Cory's Road to
China>
First American to perform on Stage in
China, PRC.
Troy Cory was among the first
international entertainers and the first
American entertainer to perform in the
People's Republic of China, beginning in
1988. In itself a notable
culture-historical feat, in view of
China's closed door policies of the late
70s and well into the 80s. The PRC's
administrative climate in comparison is
much less restrictive now and China's open
door policy enables many entertainers to
introduce themselves to the populace
Chinese
audiences
Back in the
80s, as a goodwill ambassador representing
the U.S.A., Troy Cory and his back-up
dancers and singers, "The Brooke Sisters,"
were the first entertainers from the
United States to appear in a full staged
program in the People's Republic of China
during the Shanghai TV Festival, and
televised on China's National Television
(CCTV), viewed by over 300 million
people.
It was there
Cory met Jiang Zemin, then mayor of
Shanghai, and who later became the 5th
President of the People's Republic of
China.
The
'88 Shanghai Concert was the beginnings of
Troy's concert tours in China for the next
two decades. The concerts, just to name a
few, included the following cities:
Shanghai, Beijing, Anshan, Harbin, Fuzhou
and and Tsingtao (Qingdao)

He has been a staunch advocate of
companies and citizens paying their fair
share of taxes &emdash; so much so that
the administration's proposal to force
millionaires to pay the same share of
their income in taxes as middle-class
families is known as the Buffett Rule.

Stubtelephondelgreen108w.jpg
102c- Birthplace of the Wireless
Telephone®©,
and its NBS Wireless
Telephone®© registered
service marks.
The
NBS Wireless Telephone®©
organization, founded in Murray, Kentucky,
doesn't manufacture the present-day
Wireless Telephone®© . . .
"BUT DOES MAKE the iPhone and
CellPhones of today WORK," says
Troy Cory-Stubblefield.
As
chief executive of the NBS
WiTEL®© organization, Troy
Cory-Stubblefield closely watches over the
way the effects and elements of his NBS
WiTEL®© organization are
used and paid for by Telco providers, and
users.
Underlining each and every Wireless
Telephone®© sold today . .
. is a NBS WiTEL®© service
mark utilized by iPhone, and Cellphone
provider/users. Charging high-tech
batteries by its NBS EMW induction system,
or being assigned a WiTEL®©
phone number to connect each
WiTEL®© user together are
just a couple of the elements. The NBS
Wireless Telephone®© was
invented and developed at
Teléph-on-délgreen
Industrial School, Murray, Kentucky,
commencing in 1892.
The
once upon a time Kentucky industrial
school . . . is once again star-crossed.
But this time, with a happy ending.
Murray, Kentucky touts itself as the
birthplace of the Wireless
Telephone®©, and with ample
reason. Taking a throwback to 1907, the
Nathan B. Stubblefield Industrial School
was renamed to
Teléph-on-délgreen, and
again several decades later to emerge at
same location as Murray State University.
Still
a humbling sense of history so deep-seated
that residents often rattle off dates:
1892, 1898, 1902, then 1908.
That year symbolizes the granting of
all of the Service Marks needed for
Murray's monopoly of the Wireless
Telephone®©. 1910,
was the year NBS'
Teléph-on-délgreen WiTel
construction began in a big way. The years
1910 through 1914 also marks the
time of great change in American RF
WiTEL®© industry. The
managerial side of industry was growing
and American corporations were
reorganizing and becoming more efficient
with the help of the U.S.
government,
1914,
the NBSWireless Telephone®©
manufacturing ends, and one-way
listening devices Radios, begins. With
the enachment of Government regulatory RF
seizures.
Teléph-on-délgreen's NBS
WiTel®© EMW etherwave
pipeline is replaced with a new word --
"RF," and "RADIO." (see Mann-Elkins
Act of 1910, and the 1913 "Kingsbury
Commitment).
The
years 1907, 1929, and 2008 are all
asscociated with the great depressions,
followed by years of growth of the fabled
Murray State University, NBS
WiTEL®©, AT&T, GE, and
now -- the free for all Internet
user.
No
mater how you look at it, many obserers
believe it's just a matter of time before
lawmakers step in to decide once and for
all who calls the shots for the "freebie"
EMWs provided by the 1907 Wireless
Telephone®© service marks.
Will the winner be the Telco operator,
online users, or the rules of laws set
forth in writting to protect service mark
owners?
