FILMFEST MÜNCHEN - June 25 To July 4th,

Troy Sings: "I
Never
Knew" -The
Open Air will set the Gasteig
swinging
This year's Open Air at FILMFEST
MÜNCHEN is dedicated to Swing music, with
music and dance films reaching back eight decades.
Catchy rhythms and choreographies will swing the
Gasteig Piazza -- and leave the audience tapping
toes and humming along!
The unmatched classic among Swing films is
still HELLZAPOPPIN' from 1941, which brought Lindy
Hop pioneer Frankie Manning and the Whitey Lindy
Hoppers from Harlem's legendary Savoy Ballroom to
Hollywood for some of the most spectacular dance
routines and moves in movie history, which even the
best modern break dancers can learn a thing or two
from.
Director
Tim Whelan's SWING FEVER (1943) open the Hollywood
doors to "Cotton Club" star Lena Horne, who
supplemented an overwhelmingly white cast. It was
one of the rare movie roles for the Civil
Rights advocate Horne, who
was later blacklisted by McCarthy and unable to
work in Hollywood.
Jimmy
Stewart in THE GLENN MILLER STORY
After WWII, the glory days of Big Band music came
to an end with the ascendancy of Rock'n'Roll, Elvis
Presley and Buddy Holly. Director Anthony Mann's
THE GLENN MILLER STORY (1954) looks back on the
life story of the great American band leader,
played by Jimmy Stewart -- his first non-Western
for Mann.
Richard Gere and Diane
Lane in COTTON
CLUB
Swing was out of
fashion for 30 years, until Francis Ford Coppola
chimed in its renaissance with COTTON CLUB (1984)
&endash; starring Richard Gere as a trumpet player
who falls for a mobster's girl (Diane Lane, later
paired with Gere in UNFAITHFUL), along with dance
legend Gregory Hines and early performances by
Lawrence Fishburne (MATRIX) and Coppola's nephew
Nicolas Cage.
Dermot Mulroney and Harry Belafonte in
KANSAS CITY
By the 1990s, the Swing Renaissance was in full
swing: In 1996, Robert Altman returned to his
hometown in KANSAS CITY to weave a web of intrigue,
crime, love, opium and jazz around Jennifer Jason
Leigh, Dermot Mulroney, Steve Buscemi and Harry
Belafonte. In SWEET AND LOWDOWN (1999), Woody Allen
let Sean Penn, "second-best Jazz guitarist ever"
and hopeless egomaniac, vie for the hand of mute
laundress Hattie (Samantha Morton).
The SWING KIDS (directed by Thomas Carter,
1993) were youthful Jazz fans in 1930s Hamburg, who
rebelled against the Nazis und Hitler Youth though
modern "negro" dance and music -- starring Robert
Sean Leonard (DEAD POET'S SOCIETY), Christian Bale
and Kenneth Branangh. And 2003 saw director Martin
Guigui's steamy romance SWING, in which a young
musician (Innis Casey) falls for a mysterious older
woman (Jacquline Bisset) in a jazz club.

CineMerit Award for Michael
Caine The internationally acclaimed British
actor is being honored at this year's festival with
its CineMerit Award.
The
actor, who is being honored for his extraordinary
contributions to the motion pictures as an art
form, has played more than 150 roles throughout his
career. "Michael Caine is a legend. Not many actors
have had long lasting, wide-ranging and remarkable
careers such as his", says festival director Diana
Iljine. "We're incredibly proud that he is coming
to Munich to accept our award."
Sir Michael Caine will receive the 2013 CineMerit
Award at a gala on July 1. Writer-director Sherry
Hormann ("Desert Flower", "3096 Days") will be the
speaker. FILMFEST MÜNCHEN will be screening
five Michael Caine films in its homage to him,
among them Woody Allen's "Hannah And Her Sisters"
and Lasse Hallström's "The Cider House Rules".
Caine was awarded an Oscar for his performances in
these two films.
Michael Caine will also be on hand for the European
premiere of his latest film, "Mr. Morgan's Last
Love" by Sandra Nettelbeck ("Bella Martha"). Caine
plays a lonely American widower in Paris who meets
a young Parisian woman who changes his life.
Sir Michael Caine, born in 1933 as Maurice Joseph
Micklewhite, Jr., grew up in London. Using the
stage name Michael Caine he worked his way up to
become one of the most respected and sought after
actors of his generation - on both sides of the
Atlantic.
His breakthrough came in the mid-sixties with
"Zulu" and later "Alfie", which brought him an
Oscar nomination. He has also won numerous other
major international awards. In 2000, he was
knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
The list of actors and directors with whom Michael
Caine has worked reads like a Who's Who of
Hollywood: Sean Connery, Anthony Quinn, Omar
Sharif, Elizabeth Taylor, Shirley McLaine, Nicole
Kidman, Scarlett Johansson, Anne Hathaway, Leonardo
DiCaprio and Christian Bale, to name just a
few.
Since 1997, Filmfest München has honored
outstanding personalities in the international film
community for extraordinary contributions to motion
pictures as an art form. Previous recipients
include John Malkovich, Julie Christie as well as
directors Michael Haneke, Barry Levinson and Milos
Forman.

FILMFEST
MÜNCHEN is honoring the Munich-born director
with its CineMerit Award and is screening THE WHITE
RIBBON, winner of this year's Palme d'Or.
Another
exciting film region we are spotlighting is Munich.
This year's Cannes top winner will be our guest at
the 2009 FILMFEST MÜNCHEN - director Michael
Haneke, whose film THE WHITE RIBBON won the golden
Palm at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Haneke is
the recipient of this year's CineMerit Award, with
which FILMFEST MÜNCHEN honors outstanding
personalities in the international film community
for their extraordinary contributions to motion
pictures as an art
form.
"We
look forward to congratulating Michael Haneke here
in Munich and are exceptionally pleased that our
CineMerit Award winner has won the Golden Palm at
this year's Cannes festival." Festival director
Andreas Ströhl also pointed out that "Our
decision to honor Michael Haneke with the CineMerit
Award was made long before
Cannes."
THE
WHITE RIBBON will be screened at the CineMerit
Award ceremony on July 3. Five other films by the
Austrian director will also be screened at the
festival.
We
will be focusing on the heart of Europe this year,
on new films from Poland, the Czech Republic,
Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as
Serbia-Montenegro - films that will contrast old
clichés and new prejudices with the actual
realities of these societies today.
LAST YEAR'S SPOTLIGHT WAS ON: Makhmalbaf
Retrospective Director
Mohsen Makhmalbaf has single-handedly changed the
cinema of Iran with his poetic yet realistic film
parables. He has demonstrated, under various
administrations, that making oppositional as well
as esthetically innovative films can not only be
done but that the films can receive international
acclaim as wells as causing problems for the
director with government censors. His last two
films, however, could not be made in Iran and he
sees no possibility of continuing his work there
because of the present political situation. He
emigrated to Paris with the entire Makhmalbaf Film
House, which includes his wife Marziyeh Meshkini,
his daughters Samira and Hana, and his son Maysam -
an entire family of filmmakers in exile. Filmfest
München will be screening all available films
of the Makhmalbaf Film House and all members of the
family will be present. It is the first time that
films of the entire family will be screened at one
venue. Mike
Figgis - Retrospective We
are also honoring the cinematic work of British
director, writer and musician Mike Figgis with a
retrospective. Since his feature film debut
with
STORMY
MONDAY (1988), Figgis has constantly expanded
the borders of filmmaking. After his Academy
Award-winning LEAVING LAS VEGAS, Figgis has
continued to develop innovative forms of
storytelling which have a great influence on
contemporary cinema. Mike Figgis will be in Munich
as a guest of the Filmfest. CineMerit
Award 2006 Barry Levinson His
very first film, DINER, was a sensation and rightly
so. The native Marylander soon established himself
as one of Hollywood's most creative and versatile
directors. An Oscar-winner (for RAIN MAN in 1989),
he seems to combine artistic excellence and
commercial success with relative ease. There are
not many directors who have made over a half dozens
films that were popular with both audiences and
critics.
GOOD MORNING,
VIETNAM and TIN MEN (1987), AVALON (1990),
DISCLOSURE (1994), SLEEPERS (1996), WAG THE DOG
(1997), to mention a few, are among the most
interesting films produced in Hollywood in the last
25 years. We are proud to announce that Barry
Levinson will be in Munich to receive Filmfest
München's CineMerit Award for his
extraordinary contributions to motion pictures as
an art form. The
roughly 200 films that we will be showing in 2006
will be arranged in the sections that have
traditionally made up our program: International
Program, New German Cinema, German TV Movies,
Silent Classic, Open Air, Nouveau Cinéma
Français, American Independents and the
Kinderfilmfest. The
theme of this year's Open Air screenings on the
terrace of the Gasteig festival center is: Movie
Pirates! We'll
be showing classic pirate movies like THE CRIMSON
PIRATE but also more arcane jewels of the
genre.
Filmfest's Movie Mile runs from the RIO
Filmpalast past Gasteig (the festival center), the
Museum Lichtspiele, and the MaxX Cineplex all the
way to Munich's Filmmuseum.
The Press Center (with computer work
stations) is located in the Glass Hall on the upper
level of the Gasteig festival center (Rosenheimer
Str. 5).
We will continue to provide you with updated
information on the program and guests. Press
conferences will be held on June 12 in the
Vortragssaal der Bibliothek in Gasteig (the
festival center) and on July 6 in the Filmmuseum.
Invitations will be sent out separately. As of June
22 the complete program will be available on our
website. The catalog will be available as of July
8. Starting July 3, tickets can be purchased
online. Advance ticket sales begin on July 8 at the
box office in the Gasteig festival center.
Journalists who were accredited last year
received the accreditation application form by
e-mail. For those who weren't, info can be obtained
