Norman Lear, TV Legend and creator of 'All in the Family' dies at 101
LOS ANGELES (December 6, 2023) -- SAG-AFTRA today honors the legacy of iconic writer-producer and SAG-AFTRA member Norman Lear, a television institution, who died Tuesday at age 101.
•••• SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher said, "I grew up watching Norman Lear sitcoms that made me think and question so much about the way we look and feel about a myriad of topics that were never a part of comedy. He took real issues and made them a part of sitcom families, and he showed life as it was. Not white-washed, not oppressed, but real, for young people, for women, for people of color, for people with and without money.

• The first time I worked for him, the first day of the reading of the script, I was late and I was so nervous. I walked into the room, everybody was sitting around the table, and I said, 'I'm so sorry that I'm late,' and Norman said, 'That's ok, anyone that can look that good at this hour of the morning deserves to be late,' and I never forgot his generosity and his brilliant need to elevate people and to think differently with a greater capacity for understanding each other. I saw him as recently as one year ago when I was being honored at the Hollywood Museum and he was presenting. We sat together and talked about so many things. I marveled at how sharp his mind still was even at a few months shy of 100 years old. He was a great man, a great producer, and a great American who will be greatly missed but long remembered."

• The 91st Hollywood Christmas will air 8. P.M on December 15th, 2023

Cruising down Hollywood boulevard, the parade included more than 90 celebrities and VIPs, 14 pre-parade and parade performers, 10 bands, six four-story-high character balloons, three floats, 39 movie cars.

•••• Hollywood, CA (November 10, 2023) -- For the first time in history, an American War Hero, COLONEL PARIS D. DAVIS, has been announced as the Grand Marshal of the iconic 91st Anniversary of the Hollywood Christmas Parade Supporting Marine Toys for Tots. Associated Television International in association with The City of Los Angeles will present the parade in the streets of Hollywood, CA on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. PST. Colonel Davis is also the recipient of many other prestigious awards, including:  the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with "V" device, a Purple Heart with one Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, an Air Medal with "V" device, and a Soldier's Medal for his heroism in the military.

• About Colonel Paris D. Davis

•••• Colonel Paris D. Davis earlier this year on March 3, 2023 was the recipient of the Medal of Honor, which was bestowed upon him by President Joe Biden in The White House.  President Biden said, "This is an incredible man.  Today, after 58 years after he bore the battle, we honor a true hero of our nation.  The Medal of Honor, created during (Abraham) Lincoln's presidency, is our country's highest military award, recognizing gallantry above and beyond the call of duty." 
•••• Colonel Davis was awarded the Medal of Honor as a member of the Army's elite Green Berets for his heroic acts during the Vietnam War on June 18, 1965 when Davis was leading a group of South Vietnamese forces and American soldiers during a nighttime raid when the Viet Cong staged a counterattack.  Even after hours of fighting, Davis ignored an order to evacuate and instead rescued several of his injured battlefield, soldiers while suffering several gunshot wounds himself.

•••• President Biden said during his presentation of the Medal of Honor upon Davis:  "Just as the story of Paris Davis did not begin on June 18, 1965, it does not end there either.  Captain Davis went on to become Colonel Davis, serving more than 25 years in our military and earning a PhD on top of that.  At the time Captain Davis returned from war, the country was still battling segregation.  And although the men who were with him on that June day immediately nominated Captain Davis to receive the Medal of Honor, somehow the paperwork was never processed and not just once, but twice.  He never stopped believing in the founding vision of our nation….one where all women and men are created equal."  
•••• Paris D. Davis, now 84, who was born on May 13, 1939 in Cleveland, OH, and is now a retired United States Army Officer.  He was commissioned as a Reserve Component Officer on June 1, 1959, and received Airborne and Ranger qualifications in 1960, and Special Forces qualification in 1962.  His initial oversees tours included Korea, Vietnam and Okinawa, Japan.  He was deployed in the Vietnam War in 1962 and 1965, where he was promoted to Captain as detachment commander with the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces making him one the first African American Special Forces officers during the civil rights movement. 
•••• Colonel Davis received a Masters degree in Public Affairs from Southern Illinois University in 1973, and a Masters degree and Ph.D. in Public Administration from Northern Virginia University in 1977. After retiring from military service on July 30, 1985, Davis published the Metro Herald newspaper for 30 years in Alexandria, VA, where he now resides.  In 2019, Davis was inducted into the U.S. Army Ranger Hall of Fame. Davis is the proud father of three children, and a grandfather as well.

Hollywood, CA - November 20 - During a press conference in anticipation of the Hollywood Christmas Parade, colorful characters and city officials gathered at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue. It was a sneek preview at what parade-goers will enjoy on Sunday, Nov. 26 when the beloved longtime parade makes its way down Hollywood Boulevard.
•••• Santa Claus and the Grinch both spoke to the crowd, and the PAVA World Korean Traditional Ban performed for the VIPs, journalists and others.
•••• Mulan, the legendary folk heroine from Chinese history, was there, and so were the Lion Dancers, who perform traditional dance in which they mimic a lion's movements.
•••• Magicians Nick Dopuch and Mat O'Neill entertained the crowd, and Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman, who represents Hollywood and its environs, welcomed all to come to the parade.
•••• Keep in mind that many streets will be closed and "no parking" signs will go up starting on Saturday and remaining through Sunday. And at 3 p.m. on Saturday the 101 Freeway northbound and southbound off-ramps for Cahuenga Boulevard will be closed.

• SAG-AFTRA Statement to Members Regarding End of Historic TV/Theatrical/Streaming Strike

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 9 -- SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher and SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator sent the following message to members today: 

We did it! Our historic TV/Theatrical/Streaming strike is over as of 12:01 AM this morning. After 118 days on strike, we are set to change the future of our industry with a transformative contract that includes gains for every category of SAG-AFTRA member who works this contract. 

This revolutionary agreement achieves major breakthroughs in addressing compensation via residuals and protections from generative artificial intelligence technology while reaffirming the role human performers play in the production of film, television, and streaming entertainment.

Tomorrow, the National Board will meet to review the tentative agreement and vote on whether or not to send it to you, the membership, for a ratification vote. 

Although full details will not be shared in advance of tomorrow's meeting, we wanted to share just a few key deal points: 

• More than one billion dollars in new wages and benefit plan funding;
• A streaming participation bonus;
• Minimum compensation increases that break the so-called "industry pattern;" 
• For the first time, consent and compensation guardrails on the use of AI;
• Raised Pension & Health caps that will channel more value into our funds; and 
• Critical protections for diverse communities.

We're proud of the phenomenal efforts of our TV/Theatrical Negotiating Committee, and send our sincerest thanks to you -- the members -- who made these gains possible by granting a strike authorization prior to negotiations, and remaining resolved throughout the 118 days of our strike. Your solidarity helped us achieve the necessary leverage to secure these unprecedented gains.

We're also grateful to our union siblings who stood by our side -- literally and figuratively -- from the very beginning. We truly could not have succeeded without your unwavering support. 

Effective immediately, all SAG-AFTRA members should fulfill their contractual obligations and return to work. Members and influencers may resume services relating to publicity and the promotion of motion pictures produced under the CBA and Television Agreement, without consequence or conflict with the union.

••• She is presently working on a book about her Uncle Elwin, about whom she heard stories throughout her childhood and wrote about in college.
••• The working title is Never Stand Still, which she feels incorporates her uncle's genius mind as well as his ability to always move forward, especially after the many career disappointments that he experienced.

• THEY TOLD HIM TO BE QUIET - by Adria Manary Adams
When the government tells you to be quiet, alarm signals should go off in your brain. Only a chosen few know the full extent of its power, and my uncle, Elwin Laurence Peterson, regrettably found out the hard way.

During World War II, he worked at the Washington D.C. Navy Yard in the optics and machine shop. While there, he received several awards for his contributions to the war effort. One concern that he became acutely aware of, was the difficulty that all facets of the military were experiencing in communications. Methods of transmitting vital information to and from ships, submarines, airplanes and troops on the ground had become increasingly problematic since the Germans were intercepting and/or scrambling our signals. In exploring the situation, Elwin realized that varying the frequencies on which the messages were sent would disable the enemy from capturing our communications. Since frequency variation was a prominent component of a television system that he had conceived of in the late 1920's, and patented in 1928, he suggested that the government use this significant piece of his "Transmitting System and Apparatus," patent number 1,747,791.

He absolutely believed that this method would provide clear, secured and unencumbered communication in military operations, thus saving many American soldiers.

After explaining how FM would benefit the Navy to the manager of his department, his
suggestion made its way up the ranks. In handwritten notes written by my uncle in 1945, he states:

"I was interviewed several times by various officers and engineers. At one of these interviews, a man who worked for Edwin Armstrong was in attendance. He had been called in because of his claim that Armstrong (now a Major in the Signal Corps), had been working on variations of wavelengths since 1931. At that point I informed the officers that I was well aware of his efforts, because I had demonstrated my version to Mr. Armstrong back in

1929 and again in 1930, when Bell Telephone and the Postal Telegraph Company had requested his opinion of my invention."

What Mr. Peterson did not mention in this meeting was that after seeing these demonstrations, Edwin Armstrong later used what he saw to further his efforts in transmission technology, which eventually helped him to become who many refer to as the "Father of Radio". If Armstrong was to be given this title, then Elwin Peterson should have been credited for being the "Grandfather of Radio". (The Armstrong patent was filed in 1933. Peterson's patent was submitted in 1928, five years earlier, and finalized in 1930, three years before Mr. Armstrong's.)

• After 20 years in hiatus bycylists took over the 110 Freeway
Freeway closed to car traffic for second time in history for ArroyoFest
•••• The 110 Freeway from Pasadena to Los Angeles was crowed the morning of Sunday, October 29. not with car traffice but rather with a steady flow of everything-people.
•••• From folks riding bicycles, scooters, rollerblades, skateboards or just walking, more than 50,000 descened on the six-mile closed-off stretch of the Arroyo Seco Parkway to expereience LA's oldest freeway without cars from 7 a.m. to little after 11 a.m.
••••It marked the 2nd time the same the freeway was closed to vehicles. The first time took place in June 2023, when two professors from Occidenal college and several environmental and cycling groups pulled off the inaugural ArroyoFest drawing about 8,000 people who traveled the lanes of the emptied freeway.
••••A new generation will revive the magic. Some worked the first Arroyo Fest with their young children who arwe now grown and maybe experienced it a secon time. Others came from all parts of Southern California to take part in a spectacular event.

• 106- FCC opens process for reimposing net neutrality
PORTLAND, Ore. (Sept. 26, 2023) -- The International Center for Law & Economics (ICLE) offers the following statement from ICLE Director of Innovation Policy Kristian Stout in response to today's announcement by Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Jessica Rosenworcel that the FCC plans to open the process for reimposing net neutrality:
••••Despite dire predictions, the internet has thrived in the absence of utility-style net-neutrality regulations. When the FCC repealed net neutrality in 2018, advocates claimed that without these rules, innovation would cease and access would suffer. But the opposite has occurred: more services are available at faster speeds than ever before. During the COVID-19 pandemic, our broadband networks proved remarkably robust, supporting a massive shift to remote work and school. U.S. networks also outperformed those in many countries with net-neutrality rules. These facts demonstrate that heavy-handed regulation is not needed to preserve a free and open internet. 
••• Moreover, the FCC does not have clear authority from Congress to reclassify broadband as a common-carrier service or to impose utility-style regulations. As the U.S. Supreme Court has made clear through its "major questions" doctrine, federal agencies cannot make major regulatory moves without explicit authorization from Congress. Regulating net neutrality involves complex economic and political considerations that Congress has actively debated, without granting the FCC power to resolve them. Any attempt by the FCC to adopt net-neutrality rules through reclassification would likely be struck down by the Supreme Court as exceeding the agency's authority. Rather than wasting time and resources pursuing legally dubious regulations, the FCC should allow Congress to legislate on this major policy issue.

•••• In the latest edition of his Telecom Hootenanny series, International Center for Law & Economics (ICLE) Senior Scholar Eric Fruits looks at how the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) proposed Securing the Open Internet (SSOI) order differs from the original Open Internet Order (OIO) that the commission passed in 2015.
•••• Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Jessica Rosenworcel announced plans last week for the commission to vote Oct. 19 on whether to take the first steps toward reinstating Title II regulations on broadband providers. LOS ANGELES (Oct. 12, 2023) --  Sen. Chris Coons, Sen. Marsha Blackburn, Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Sen. Thom Tillis today announced the NO FAKES Act, a proposed bill creating new and urgently needed protections for voice and likeness in the age of generative artificial intelligence. 

The proposal offers historic federal intellectual property protection against the misappropriation of voice and likeness performance in sound recordings and audiovisual works. It prohibits the unauthorized use of digital replicas without the informed consent of the individuals being replicated. 

The world has seen what generative artificial intelligence can do, and witnessed the ease with which an individual can be replicated without consent. The damage to lives, and careers, is real and immediate. This proposal provides an invaluable tool for performers, allowing them to maintain control over their most valuable assets.  

"A performer's voice and their appearance are all part of their unique essence, and it's not ok when those are used without their permission. Consent is key, and I'm grateful that Sens. Coons, Blackburn, Klobuchar and Tillis are working to give performers recourse and providing tools to remove harmful material," said SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher.

"The explosion in popularity and capability of generative artificial intelligence has flooded the internet with AI-created songs, videos, and voice recordings which exploit the voices and likenesses of our members without consent or compensation," said SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland. "For our members, their voice and likeness is their livelihood. They spend a lifetime improving their talent and building their value. It is outrageous to think someone can undermine that value with a few prompts and clicks on a keyboard. Thank you to Sens. Coons, Blackburn, Klobuchar and Tillis for spearheading this urgent and important effort."

LOS ANGELES - (October 11, 2023) Some unusual cargo was hauled through the streets of Exposition Park on Wednesday, as a pair of large space-age Solid Rocket Motors were delivered to the California Science Center.
•••• Exactly eleven years after Space Shuttle Endeavour made its 12-mile journey across the streets of Los Angeles and Inglewood, the California Science Center invited the public to come out and watch the arrival of two large Solid Rocket Motors (SRMs), the next phase of Go for Stack--the complex, multi-phase process of moving and lifting each of the space shuttle components into place for Endeavour's upcoming awe-inspiring 20-story vertical display. The SRMs, donated by Northrop Grumman, are the final elements of the space shuttle system to arrive at the California Science Center.
•••• The move of the motors is also no small task. The rocket motors are each 116 feet long and more than 12 feet in diameter. And they both weigh 104,000 pounds•••• Due to the moving and construction process, the space shuttle Endeavour will be removed from public display, meaning the last chance for people to see the shuttle in its current configuration will be Dec. 31.

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 4 -- SAG-AFTRA today released the following statement:
"SAG-AFTRA members appearing on Saturday Night Live either as hosts, guests, or cast members are working under the Network Code agreement, which is not a contract we are striking. They are not in violation of SAG-AFTRA strike rules, and we support them in fulfilling their contractual obligations.

 "The program is a SAG-AFTRA non-dramatic production under a separate agreement that is not subject to the union's strike order.

 "The majority of our members who are regular cast on Saturday Night Live had contractual obligations to the show prior to the strike.  Many are under option agreements that require them to return to the show if the producers exercise their option which the producers have done.  

 "Our members are also subject to a "No Strike Clause" in the Network Code Collective Bargaining Agreement.  This means our performers agree not to strike during the term of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and to show up to work during this term (the Network Code runs through June 30, 2024). By not showing up to work, our performers can be held in breach of contract and the Union is prohibited from advising them not to work.   

 "It is important to recognize that SAG-AFTRA is fighting against the studios and not members who are required to go to work every day under other union contracts or personal service agreements.  We stand with our union siblings across the industry as we also recognize our obligations under federal labor law."

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Hollywood's writers strike was declared over after nearly five months when their union board member approved a contract agreement with studios, bringing the industry at least partly back from a historic halt in production.
•••• The governing boards of the eastern and western branches of the Writers Guild of America and their joint negotiating committee all voted to accept the deal, two days after the tentative agreement was reached with a coalition of Hollywood's biggest studios, streaming services and production companies. After the vote they declared that the strike would be over and writers would be free to start on scripts at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday September 27.

Besides these, YouTube and Barbie's film were also some of the most viewed pages. Throughout August, Wikipedia pages were visited nearly 7.8 billion times.

The report shows that:
• The Oppenheimer film generated nearly 7 million views on its Wikipedia page.
• A highly visited page, with 6.6 million views, was the Indian action film "Gadar 2".
• Cleopatra ranks third on the most visited page list with 6.1 million views.
• YouTube's Wikipedia page was visited 6 million times.

 101- SAG-AFTRA approves extention of active coverage to qualified participants
LOS ANGELES (August 30, 2023) -- The trustees of the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan have unanimously agreed to a one-calendar-quarter extension of health coverage for certain qualified participants who would otherwise lose coverage on Oct. 1, 2023. This extension accounts for work opportunities that may have been lost in May and June of this year due to the WGA strike.
•••• Qualified participants must be losing earnings-based or days-based coverage on Oct. 1, 2023, and have at least $22,000 in reported earnings (or 85 alternative days) from July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023. These reduced requirements apply only to continuation of existing active coverage and reflect a reduction that accounts for lesser earnings opportunities during May and June. 
•••• "This will come as a great relief to our members," said SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher. "I think it's important that we never forget that we are in a contract negotiation with the AMPTP and under no circumstances should the health and well-being of members and their families ever be weaponized against them because of this strike. The AMPTP is long overdue to return to the negotiating table with a fresh perspective on their integral relationship with SAG-AFTRA members. The ball is in their court to do the right thing on behalf of performers and accept the inevitable paradigm shift with grace and generosity."
•••• SAG-AFTRA's National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, who also serves as a trustee, said, "It's a shame the studios and streamers have put so many SAG-AFTRA members in a position where they have to worry about basic necessities &emdash; like whether they will remain covered by their health plan. The Board of Trustees' approval of this extension to some of those impacted by the AMPTP's intransigence will help alleviate some of that anxiety. The solution we're all hoping for, however, is that the AMPTP will return to the bargaining table."
•••• SAG-AFTRA health plan participants who lose active coverage but don't qualify for the extension will receive a COBRA offer from the Plan. COBRA premium payment assistance or other resources that can help members find affordable coverage may be available through their state or through one of the entertainment industry's charitable foundations.

LOS ANGELES, July 6, 2023 --The California Science Center will commence Go for Stack, the complex process of moving and lifting each of the space shuttle components into place for Endeavour's upcoming, awe-inspiring 20-story vertical display in the future Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, currently under construction. This technically challenging feat has never been done outside of a NASA facility. The installation of the two aft skirts, the base of the solid rocket boosters, will mark the first Go for Stack milestone and lay the foundation upon which the entire shuttle stack will be built. This is the first step in creating the world's only display of an authentic, 'ready-to-launch' space shuttle system; complete with the orbiter Endeavour, solid rocket boosters, and external tank.

Erroneously, Life lists Guglielmo Marcon's dots and dashes as the first wireless broadcast, a fable echoed by the World Almanac and Encyclopedia Britannica. It's a forgivable mumpsimus, since the evidence offered on the following pages has not, until now, appeared in any national publication.
•••• The birth of broadcasting is a bizarre soap opera saga, a lacrymal legend of mystery, machination, ephemeral enshrinement, decline, disillusionment and disaster. It's denouncement dissolves six miles north of Murray, Kentucky, in a two-room shanty constructed of pine and cornstalks, where radio's uncelebrated architect is discovered 48 hours after his death, his records scattered, his equipment destroyed, his brain partly eaten by rats. Even local radio fails to mention his demise. He is Nathan Beverly Stubblefield, the man history over-heard and then overlooked.

Rice died May 19, 2022 at the age of 81 in Daytona Beach, Florida
••• He grew up in the mountains of North Carolina, and fell in love with the beaches of Florida on a childhood visit. He made his home in Daytona Beach, where he worked as a high school chemistry teacher and part-time lifeguard.
••• It was at his part-time job that Rice was inspired by seeing people all over the beach using Coppertone suntan lotion. He became determined to create a unique competitor, using his chemistry knowledge to experiment with a suntan lotion formula, scented with coconut and fruit.
••• He famously mixed his first formula in a garbage can, bottling it at home in his garage with a $500 loan from his father to launch his business. He named it Hawaiian Tropic to evoke an exotic beach locale.
••• His experiment was a hit making him a multi-millionaire, with his Hawaiian Tropic suncare brand creating sales of $110 million per year.
••• Ricewith his Hawaiian Tropic brand became known for sponsoring beauty pageants and NASCAR racecars.
••• In 2004 he accompanied Troy Cory to a concert tour through China.
•••After selling Hawaiian Tropic to Playtex in 2007, Rice returned to the industry in recent years with the suncare brand Habana Brisa.

• 114- Scott B. Whitenack-Stubblefield Esq., great-grand son of wireless telephone inventor, Nathan B. Stubblefield, died - By Troy Cory
Scott Bryan Whitenack passed away untimely on September 18, in Los Angeles, CA.
•••• Scott, aka Scott Stubblefield, was one of four children with siblings, Alden, Keith, and Priscilla. (His brother Keith pre-ceded him in death at the age of 32). His parents were Troy Cory Stubblefield, an entertainer and author and Dorothy Swafford, owner of a furniture and antiques retail store. Scott's children are Steven, David and grand-children, William, Bruce, Cora and Max, borne to Steven and Skylark. Scott's great-grandfather is Nathan B. Stubblefield, the inventor of Radio, in 1882, and patent holder of the wireless telephone (1908) and his great-great-great .... grandparents were - John and Priscilla Alden who were part of the pilgrimage who sailed on the Mayflower to Plymouth Rock from England in 1620.

During the time he studied for the State Bar, Scott lived with Josie and myself on our family estate in Pasadena. He passed the State Bar the first time and was among only 33% to do so.
The balance of time was spent doing cinematography for my TV shows, which he considered an artistic outlet besides his major life's work, in the field of law. After he passed the State Bar he handled numerous legal cases and ended up working as an associate lawyer with Melvin Belli with whom he engaged in several cases and won a lawsuit that became precedent case law. Whitenack was committed to his legal profession for over three decades.•
r••• If you needed legal advice or help with a motion filing, Scott was there with his trusty law books. He was very intelligent, outspoken and an independent thinker.
•••• He also was a family man, who loved hiking and scuba diving, a good game of tennis and enjoyed bringing his sons to Paramount Ranch for regular family outings and Father's Day get-togethers.
•••• As to his love for cinematography he videotaped additional segments for the movie "Christmas around the World." Scott later became my producer and cinematographer for "To Catch a Dream" filmed in Europe. The video project brought him and the production team to Paris, Venice, Cannes, Munich and Salzburg. Said footage with perfect picture-book pans of the Eiffel Tower, the Seine River, the leaning Tower of Pisa and the Venice Bridge of Sigh, is a legacy he left behind for us.
•••• In the early 90s during the writing of our 4-volume set of books entitled "the SMART-DAAF Boys" about the invention of radio and the the wireless telephone, Scott lent a helpful hand in giving his legal aspect of his great-grandfather Nathan Stubblefield's copyrighted and patented invention. He also was the co-author of "Bank America, the Tortfeasor." •

••••• He leaves behind his father, Troy Cory-Stubblefield, his mother Dorothy Steele, sister Priscilla Stubblefield Cory, brother and sister-in-law Alden and Sara Stubblefield, step mother Josie Cory-Stubblefield, sons David and Steven, daughter-in law Skylar, and great-grandchildren, William, Bruce, Cora and Max; Nephew Ryan White, and niece Jenny Wharton. His brother Keith pre-ceded him in death at the age of 32.
