La Biennale Cinema 2023 at Venice
Lido
The
lineup includes
octogenarians
Woody
Allen and Roman
Polanski.
The
80th Venice International Film Festival
organized by La Biennale di Venezia will
take place at the Venice Lido from August
30 to September 9. It is the oldest film
festival in the world and one of the "Big
Three" film festivals.
"Comandante,"
directed by Edoardo De Angelis, will
serve as the festival's opening film on 30
August and "Society of the Snow"
has been scheduled as the Festival's
closing
film.
Bradley Cooper's
Leonard Bernstein drama "Maestro," Sofia
Coppola's Priscilla Presley movie, Michael
Mann's "Ferrari," David Fincher's "The
Killer" and Ava DuVernay's "Origin" will
make their world debuts at the Venice
International Film Festival.
The Festival is
also set to headline films directed by
Woody Allen and Roman Polanski, despite
Hollywood's distaste for the directors due
to their histories of sexual misconduct
accusations.
Despite Polanski
being accused of sexual assault of a minor
in 1977, his film "The Palace," set in in
a Swiss Hotel on New Year's Eve, will be
featured in the festival as well as
Allen's film "Coup de Chance," a French
thriller, is to premiere at the festival,
regardless of being accused of sexual
assault in 1992.
The lineup for the
80th edition of the festival, which --
despite the flashy names behind the films
-- could have a little less Hollywood
glamour than usual gracing the red carpet
if the Hollywood actors and writers
strikes stretch on. As part of the
strike, actors cannot promote projects
from the studios and streamers with whom
the union is negotiating.
The prestigious
film festival already lost one
high-profile premiere to the labor
disputes in the U.S. in Luca
Guadagnino's tennis drama "Challengers,"
starring Zendaya, which had been set to
play in the opening night slot but has now
been pushed to 2024. But Alberto Barbera,
the director of the Venice Film Festival,
said that the strikes' effects on the
festival lineup had otherwise been
minimal.

Lorenzo Mattotti creates official poster
for Venice Inter'l Film
Festival
-
TVIMagazine
Italian illustrator and artist Lorenzo
Mattotti is, for the sixth consecutive
year, the author of the image for the
official poster, and for the fifth year,
of the opening sequence for the Venice
International Film Festival of La Biennale
di Venezia, this year in its 80th edition
(August 30 - 9 September 2023).
The image chosen for the poster this year
"is inspired by the tradition of on the
road movies," explains Lorenzo Mattotti,
and in this way seeks to express feelings
of freedom, adventure, the discovery of
new territories. I played with the
graphics - underscores the author - to
represent new worlds that can be explored
through Cinema.
We are convinced that there is a great
future for Cinema that looks forward and
ventures down new paths. Furthermore, the
Venice International Film Festival is
celebrating its 80th edition this year and
we wanted to commemorate that in the
number that appears on the license plate
of an imagined car. Naturally, many are
the films that can be evoked by this
image, such as Il sorpasso, Easy Rider or
Thelma and Louise. May each of us find our
own on the road movie. This is our wish
for Cinema, may it go far and sprint
towards the future. A future of
exploration, in search of new frontiers: a
colourful luminous Cinema".
Lorenzo Mattotti lives and works in Paris.
He began his career in the late 1970s as a
comic artist and in the early 1980s
founded the Valvoline group with other
illustrators. In 1984 he created Fuochi,
which was greeted as an event in the world
of comic art, and won important
international awards. In cinema, he
collaborated in 2004 on Eros by Wong
Kar-Wai, Soderbergh and Antonioni, and was
responsible for the presentation segments
of each episode. He was a creative
consultant for Pinocchio by Enzo
D'Alò. In Incidenti, Signor
Spartaco, Doctor Nefasto, L'uomo alla
finestra and many more books, all the way
to Stigmate published in Italy by Einaudi,
Mattotti's work has evolved following an
extremely consistent constant.
His
books have been translated around the
world. He publishes in newspapers and
magazines such as The New Yorker, Le
Monde, Das Magazin, Suddeutsche Zeitung,
Nouvel Observateur, Corriere della Sera
and Repubblica. He has illustrated many
books for children including Pinocchio and
Eugenio, which won the Grand Prix in
Bratislava in 1993. He has held many solo
exhibitions including an anthological
exhibition at the Palazzo delle
Esposizioni in Rome, at the FransHals
museum in Haarlem and at the Musei di
Porta Romana. He creates posters, covers,
advertising campaigns and is the author of
the Cannes 2000 poster and the posters for
the Estate Romana festival.
In May 2019, he presented to great acclaim
in the Un certain regard section of the
Cannes Film Festival, his first animated
feature-length film as author and
director, titled "La famosa invasione
degli orsi in Sicilia" (The Bears' Famous
Invasion of Sicily) inspired by the
fable/apologue by
Dino Buzzati.

Support
Strong for Striking Entertainment Industry
Workers, Poll
Finds
LOS ANGELES
(August 18, 2023) -- The public
strongly supports striking entertainment
industry workers and their fight for fair
contracts, according to the results
released today from a nationwide poll
conducted by Data for Progress. More than
two-thirds said they support the strikes
by SAG-AFTRA and the WGA, with only 18%
opposed.
Remarkably,
even among those who view labor unions
negatively, nearly half support the
strikes, with just 37% opposed.
The
results are even more dramatic when
respondents are asked to weigh in on the
individual issues over which the unions
are striking, with between 72% and 87%
agreeing on the unions' stance over
compensation, limits to AI use and other
issues.
"The
data shows that most people understand why
the union was forced to go on strike. I
suspect many are seeing the same dynamic
playing out in their own lives, with
employers undervaluing their
contributions," said SAG-AFTRA National
Executive Director and Chief
Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland.
"That's why this fight is so important.
Our demands aren't unreasonable, and it's
a fundamental principle of fairness that
workers should be fairly compensated for
the value they bring their employer -- in
every industry."
The
Data for Progress survey took place Aug. 3
to 5, among a sample of 1,124 likely
voters nationally, weighted to be
representative of likely voters by age,
gender, education, race, geography and
voting history. The margin of error is
±3 percentage.

SAG-AFTRA shares the following news from
NYFTUC
New York
City (August 21, 2023) -- New York's
film and television union coalition thanks
Senator Webb and Assemblymember Meeks for
their commitment to New York's film and
television production workers.
We strongly believe
in the inherent value of human creative
expression over generative artificial
intelligence. S.7422 (Webb)/A.7634 (Meeks)
rightly prioritizes workers and protects
against job displacement in the film and
television industry and will help prevent
misappropriation of the tangible and
intangible assets of the creative talent
we represent. We look forward to working
further with Senator Webb and
Assemblymember Meeks on this issue.
We embrace the
potential inherent in artificial
intelligence -- to improve lives, improve
jobs, and better our world; however, this
potential cannot be used as a tool to
replace workers and the creative value
they bring to the production of film and
television. We will not sit idly by and
let that happen. We will work at the
bargaining table and with elected
officials to protect our members and the
essential contributions they make to the
arts.

FEMA Web Page to Dispel
Misinformation
WASHINGTON
- (Aug 17, 2023) - FEMA Launches Web Page
to Dispel Myths, Address Rumors and Answer
Frequently Asked Questions Related to
Hawaii Wildfires.
After a disaster,
rumors and myths can harm disaster
survivors by causing confusion and can
even prevent people from seeking
assistance.
To address this
problem, FEMA recently launched a rumor
control and frequently asked questions web
page to keep survivors of the Hawaii
wildfires aware of rumors and scams, and
to help them better understand the federal
disaster assistance programs and
processes.
FEMA's rumor page
and Hawaii Wildfire web page are designed
to help survivors, their families and
communities access official information
from trusted sources. We are encouraging
all people to help stop the spread of
rumors by doing three easy
things:
1. Find
trusted sources of information.
2. Share information from trusted
sources.
3. Discourage others from sharing
information from unverified
sources.
FEMA's rumor
page addresses common myths specific to
the federal response to the Hawaii
wildfires, including:
One rumor claims
that if survivors apply for disaster
assistance, FEMA may confiscate their
property or land. This is completely
false. The truth is that applying for
disaster assistance does not grant FEMA or
the federal government authority or
ownership of your property or land.
Another rumor
alleges that FEMA and the Red Cross are
confiscating donations for Hawaii wildfire
aid. The truth is that FEMA is
coordinating donations with numerous
nonprofit and voluntary organizations,
including the Red Cross. After disasters,
large quantities of donated items can
actually hinder disaster response efforts
because it takes time and effort to sort
donations. By coordinating efforts with
nonprofits, FEMA and its partners can
determine how to distribute these items
effectively and efficiently. Learn more
about volunteering and donations.

FEMA, Federal Partners Provide Critical
Aid to Lahaina, Hawaii Wildfire
Response and Recovery
Efforts
WASHINGTON
- (August 13, 2023) -- As
fire containment
efforts continue in Hawaii, FEMA is
working with its federal partners to
provide immediate relief and lend support
to the state-led and locally executed
mission on the ground. More than 250 FEMA
staff are deployed and leveraging partner
agency expertise to help Hawaii
residents and communities jumpstart their
recovery.
FEMA Administrator
Deanne Criswell, U.S. Fire Administrator
Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell and U.S. Small
Business Administration Associate
Administrator Francisco Sànchez,
Jr. surveyed catastrophic damage on the
island today, as field assessments,
initial debris assessments and housing
inspections are underway.
As of Aug. 13,
2023: More than 250 FEMA personnel are
deployed to assist Hawaii residents in
their greatest time of need, including 45
Disaster Survivor Assistance staff who are
visiting shelters in Maui to help
survivors register for assistance and
identify and report any critical
needs.
The
U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and
Nutrition Service approved Hawaii's
request for impacted Child Nutrition
Programs and Supplemental Nutrition
Assistance Program benefits. The USDA is
also coordinating pet reunification
activities on the ground and is assessing
ability to supply food and water to large
animals in Lahaina.
The U.S. Department
of State granted a fee waiver for people
who lost their U.S. passport book or
passport card as a result of the wildfires
in Hawaii.
The U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services approved a
public health emergency effective Aug. 8
through Nov. 6, which provides greater
flexibility in meeting emergency health
needs of Medicare and Medicaid
beneficiaries in Hawaii.
The American Red
Cross and Maui County continue to staff
and support six shelters where food,
water, hygiene kits and other essential
resources are provided to survivors who
are unable to return home. Since the fires
began, the Red Cross and partners have
provided almost 2,900 overnight shelter
stays. As of today, approximately 240 Red
Cross personnel are responding or actively
deploying and around 100 volunteers are
participating in a virtual call center to
assist with shelter
registrations.
FEMA mission
assigned debris management and temporary
emergency power to the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers (USACE) to help clear up roads
and stabilize electric service as well as
the Environmental Protection Agency for
household hazardous waste removal
activities that are essential to begin
recovery work in the impacted areas. USACE
also completed its initial hazardous
materials assessment in Maui.
Hawaiian Electric
restored additional circuits in West Maui
and crews completed the installation of a
mobile substation at the Lahainaluna
substation, which is expected to help
restore power to customers in the
neighboring subdivisions.
The Cybersecurity
and Infrastructure Security Agency is
actively conducting assessments of
critical infrastructure and communications
systems and coordinating with private
sector partners to establish temporary
communications solutions.
Hawaii National
Guard has staff in Maui with another 200
staff expected in the coming days to
support Maui Police Department safety and
security activities in the impacted
areas.
The
Federal Aviation Administration has flight
restrictions in place in Maui to assist
emergency response efforts.
The
U.S. Coast Guard is conducting underwater
surveys of the Lahaina harbor using sonar
technology to identify structural
damage.
The U.S. Small
Business Administration encourages
homeowners, renters, businesses and
nonprofits to apply for low interest
disaster loans. Businesses can apply for
up to $2 million for physical damage or
economic injury. More information is
available by calling the Honolulu office:
808-541-2990 or visiting sba.gov.
Maui County
residents are encouraged to register for
federal assistance by
visiting DisasterAssistance.gov,
through the FEMA App,
calling 1-800-621-3362 or with
in-person with FEMA Disaster Survivor
Assistance staff. Residents who use
a relay service, such as video relay or
captioned telephone service, can give the
FEMA operator the number for that
service.
As response and
recovery efforts continue, Hawaii
residents and tourists should continue to
monitor instructions from local
authorities.
FEMA's
mission is helping people before, during
and after disasters.

Paul
Reubens, comedian who portrayed iconic
Pee-wee Herman character, dies at 70
-
TVIMagazine
Reubens died Sunday
night after a six-year struggle with
cancer that he did not make public, his
publicist said in a statement.
"Last night we said farewell to Paul
Reubens, an iconic American actor,
comedian, writer and producer whose
beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted
generations of children and adults with
his positivity, whimsy and belief in the
importance of kindness," the statement
reads. "Paul bravely and privately fought
cancer for years with his trademark
tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific
talent, he will forever live in the comedy
pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured
friend and man of remarkable character and
generosity of spirit."
Reuben shared a
statement on his instagram account to be
shared with his fans after his passing:
"Please accept my apology for not going
public with what I've been facing the last
six years," Reubens wrote. "I have always
felt a huge amount of love and respect
from my friends, fans and supporters. I
have loved you all so much and enjoyed
making art for you."
Born Paul Rubenfeld in Peekskill, New
York, Reubens grew up in Sarasota,
Florida, and developed an affinity for
comedy early on in his life that he
attributed in part to Sarasota being the
winter home of the Ringling Bros. and
Barnum Circus.
After high school graduation, Reubens
enrolled in Boston University's theatre
department before moving to Los Angeles to
attend the acting program at California
Institute of the Arts, the new school
founded by Walt Disney.

Herman {Photo: Getty images}
It was after college that Reubens created
the iconic character Pee-wee Herman while
a member of the famed Los Angeles improv
group, The Groundlings.
"The Pee-wee Herman Show" premiered at The
Groundlings Theatre in 1981 before moving
to The Roxy on Sunset Strip, where it ran
for an unprecedented five months.
The HBO broadcast of the show introduced
the Pee-wee Herman character to a national
audience.
Reubens
teamed up with Tim Burton for the 1985
film debut "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" "
which Reubens co-wrote.
The creator and
star of the subversive 1986 to 1990 TV
series "Pee-wee's Playhouse" revisited his
iconic, giddy character on occasion over
the years and updated revival of "The
Pee-wee Herman Show" in Los Angeles. The
production later traveled to Broadway,
opening to rave reviews at The Stephen
Sondheim Theater. Reubens revisited the
character in the 2016 Netflix
movie "Pee-wee's Big Holiday."
"Pee-wee's
Playhouse" ran for four years and earned
15 Emmy awards in its time, while Reubens
himself has been nominated for 14 Emmys,
winning twice. His star on Hollywood's
Walk of Fame was awarded in 1988.

base of the solid rocket boosters, will
mark the first Go for Stack milestone and
lay the foundation upon which the entire
shuttle stack will be built. This is the
first step in creating the world's only
display of an authentic, 'ready-to-launch'
space shuttle system; complete with the
orbiter Endeavour, solid rocket boosters,
and external tank.
The roughly
six-month Go for Stack process will start
with the installation of the aft
skirts, on top of which the solid rocket
motors will be stacked to form
the solid rocket boosters. This will be
followed by the move and lift of the
external tank, ET-94; then, Space Shuttle
Endeavour's final move across Exposition
Park and lift into place by a large crane;
and finally, the intricate mating of the
orbiter with the rest of the space shuttle
stack. Once finished, Endeavour will
be in a vertical configuration towering
200-feet tall. The Air and Space Center
building will be completed around the full
shuttle stack.
After more than
eleven years on display at the California
Science Center, December 31, 2023 will be
the last chance to see Endeavour on
exhibit for several years until the Samuel
Oschin Air and Space Center opens to the
public. While Endeavour is off exhibit,
the California Science Center remains one
of the largest science centers in the
nation, with
multiple hands-on exhibit galleries,
special exhibitions, and IMAX movies for
guests to experience.
"Endeavour will be
the star attraction of the Samuel Oschin
Air and Space Center, a launchpad for
creativity and innovation that will
inspire future generations of scientists,
engineers and explorers," said Jeff
Rudolph, President and CEO of the
California Science Center. "We are
grateful to be at this point in the
construction of the new Air and Space
Center, and thrilled to start Go for Stack
on July 20 to commemorate Space
Exploration Day."
NASA-KimShiflett
With an impressive
artifact collection integrated with
hands-on exhibits, the Samuel Oschin Air
and Space Center will be a major expansion
that will double the Science Center's
educational exhibit space, adding 100,000
square feet and 100 new educational
exhibits. Guests of all ages will be
encouraged to investigate scientific and
engineering principles of atmospheric
flight and the exploration of the
universe. The Air, Shuttle, and Space
Galleries will provide a unique
educational opportunity for our Los
Angeles community and guests from around
the world, general admission free. The
Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center is the
third phase of the California Science
Center's three-phase, three-decade master
plan to develop one of the world's leading
science learning centers. Building
construction is underway, and together
with artifact and exhibit installation, is
expected to take several years.
The California
Science Center Foundation is actively
fundraising to complete this ambitious
project with $320 million raised toward
the $400 million EndeavourLA Campaign
goal. Everyone can help realize this
exciting vision and donations at any level
are welcomed.

It's

the 40th edition of FILMFEST MÜNCHEN
held its opening gala in Munich. Some
1,500 guests from the arts, the film
industry, and local government attended
the ceremony at the Gasteig HP8 venue for
concerts and cultural events.
More than 20 members of the cast and crew
of the opening film "The Persian Version"
attended the opening gala at FILMFEST

Maryam Keshavarz and lead actresses Layla
Mohammadi and Niousha Noor.
For this year's
anniversary edition, the Filmfest has dug

woman named Lara, the daughter of deaf
parents, who searches for and finds her
own way through life. "Born in Flames" by

102- Wheel
of Fortune' names Ryan Seacrest as new
host, replacing Pat
Sajak

June - 27, 2023.
Weeks after longtime Whell of Fortune host
Pat Sajak announced his retirement,
Seacrest revealed Tuesday that he will
takeover hosting duties. The producer
shared the news in a statement posted on
Instagram."
"I'm truly humbled
to be stepping into the footsteps of the
legendary Pat Sajak," he wrote. "I can
say, along with the rest of America, that
it's been a privilege and pure joy to
watch Pat and Vanna [White] on our
television screens for an unprecedented 40
years."
He added: "Pat, I
love the way you've always celebrated the
contestants and made viewers at home feel
at ease. I look forward to learning
everything I can from you during this
transition.
The "Wheel of
Fortune" change of guard comes after Sajak
said on Twitter that "his time has
come."
"I've decided that
our 41st season, which begins in
September, will be my last," he wrote.
"It's been a wonderful ride.
Seacrest, who said
he is "grateful" for the opportunity,"
mentioned about how the move feels "full
circle" for him, as he reflected on one of
his "first jobs" hosting the short-lived
game show "Click" from Merv Griffin from
1997 to 1999. Griffin is a TV legend,
having created of both "Jeopardy!" and
"Wheel of Fortune."
"I can't wait to
continue the tradition of spinning the
wheel and working alongside the great
Vanna White," Seacrest said.
During
his tenure hosting "Wheel of Fortune"
alongside letter turner Vanna White, Sajak
has won the Daytime Emmy for outstanding
game show host three times, with 19 total
nominations. While Sajak will no longer be
the face of "Wheel," which he'd steered
since its 1981 debut, Sony Pictures
Television confirmed that he will continue
a partnership with the program as a
consultant.
Seacrest has guided
"American Idol" from its inception,
hosting the singing competition show since
2002. Seacrest has proven a steadfast
force on the show as it transformed across
the decade and judges cycling in and out
and amid its move from Fox to ABC.
He is also
well-versed in taking up the mantle from
another icon, after assuming hosting
duties for "American Top 40" from
legendary radio host Casey Kasem in 2004
and "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve."
Seacrest co-hosted and executive produced
the holiday special with Clark from 2006
until the renowned broadcaster's death in
2012.
One of his first
jobs was hosting a little game show called
'Click' for Merv Griffin 25 years ago so
this is truly a full circle moment for me
and "I'm grateful to Sony for the
opportunity," Seacrest added to his post.
"I can't wait to continue the tradition of
spinning the wheel and working alongside
the great Vanna White."

101- SAG-AFTRA
waivers are
questioned
Actors
are opposed to appear in movies amid the
actors' and writers' labor strikes and
come amid scrutiny over decisions to
except some productions from the strike
that are not affiliated with any major
studios or streaming platforms and have
sparked questions of lately.
Although
much of Hollywood has come to a standstill
amid the strikes more than 40 productions
have been granted waivers to continue
shooting during the mass work stoppage.
But whether actors are crossing a picket
line by participating in those productions
has become a point of contention in the
industry.
Under
the terms of the waiver said projects are
required to abide by the guidelines
SAG-AFTRA has presented to the AMPTP in
bargaining. The guild is fighting for
higher wages, greater shares of revenue
generated by streaming hits and
limitations on the use of AI, among other
benefits and protections. The exempt
poductions must operate under these terms
until the union and the AMPTP agree on and
ratify a new contract.
There
is a questions as to whether all the
exempt projects are truly independent.
However, it seems all want a swift end to
this strike and get back to work after
having won crucial new benefits.

101- SAG-AFTRA
union votes to strike after talks fail
with studios.
(Television Int'l
Magazine)
LOS ANGELES, July 13, 2023 - SAG-AFTRA
National Board's vote authorized a strike
to begin at 12:01 a.m. PT. on Friday July
14 (happens to be on Bastille Day in
France). The Negotiating Committee joined
the members on the picket lines on said
first day of the SAG-AFTRA strike,
including:
SAG-AFTRA President
and Negotiating Committee Chair Fran
Drescher, National Executive Director and
Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland
and the members of the SAG-AFTRA
Negotiating Committee.
The strike took
place at various locations at specified
times namely at SAG-AFTRA headquarters,
5757 Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90036;
Netflix, 1456 N. Van Ness Ave., LA, CA
9028; Paramount Studios, 5433 Melrose
Avenue, LA 90038; Warner Bros, 3772 W.
Olive Blvd., Burbank, CA 91505; and
Disney: 500 S. Buena Vista, Burbank CA
91506.
SAG-AFTRA move
follows TV and film writers' walkout in
further upending the industry Actors --
similarly to screenwriter already on the
picket line -- have been battling studios
for a pact that would deliver far better
pay and residuals from streaming,
including the use of artificial
intelligence, that have been roiling the
entertainment industry.
Despite the
last-minute involvement of a federal
mediator, the 160,000 member union was
unable to secure a deal with the Alliance
of Motion Picture and Television
Producers, (AMPTP) which represents
studios and in labor dealings. The old
collective bargaining agreement expired
Wednedsday night without a deal in
place.

Time
is ticking as the SAG-AFTRA contract is to
expire June
30.
SAG-AFTRA
leaders describe negotiation talks as
productive
Members of the
Directors Guild of America voted to ratify
their contract, which provides increases
in residuals and minimums as well as gains
on working hours, family leave and
creative rights.
The SAG-AFTRA
contract is set to expire next Friday June
30, and there has been some talk that the
negotiations might be extended if the
sides are unable to reach agreement on all
points by then.
Union president
Fran Drescher and chief negotiator Duncan
Crabtree-Ireland are optimistic saying
they hope to be able to achieve a deal
with the studios.
If
they do, that would avert a "double
strike," in which performers would join
the Writers Guild of America on picket
lines outside the major studios.
SAG-AFTRA
represents 160,000 performers. The union
is seeking robust protections around the
use of artificial intelligence (AI), as
well as increases in residuals and
regulations on self-taped auditions, among
other issues.
The
use of the word "strike" was avoided and
made no mention was made of the strike
authorization approved by 98% of the
membership just before talks began on June
7.
The
SAG-AFTRA strike authorization gives the
leadership the power to call a strike
beginning on July 1 if no contract has
been reached.

AMPTP
SAG-AFTRA Negotiations extended until July
12,
2023
LOS
ANGELES (June 30, 2023) -- The
Alliance of Motion Picture and Television
Producers (AMPTP) and Screen Actors
Guild-American Federation of Television
and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) have agreed
to an extension of the 2020 TV/Theatrical
contracts. The agreements, which were set
to expire at 11:59 p.m. PT tonight, will
now expire on July 12, at 11:59 pm PT. The
parties will continue to negotiate under a
mutually agreed upon media blackout.
Neither
organization will comment to the media
about the negotiations during the
extension.
Actors walkout looming
Hundreds of actors,
delivered a message this week that they're
prepared to strike if the union couldn't
deliver a "transformative deal."
For now, the
decision avoids a possibly painful second
strike for Hollywood, with the actors
joining in a national walkout for the
first time since 1960.
The last time
actors went on strike was in 2000 in a
dispute over their commercials contract.
The previous strike against major studios
was in 1988.
The extension
probably also means the writers' strike
could drag on as the AMPTP tries to secure
a deal with the actors.
SAG-AFTRA has been
in talks with the studios since June 7.
Negotiations got off to a contentious
start when leaders secured a strike
authorization even before bargaining
began.
Like writers,
actors want pay increases to counter the
effects of inflation, as well as increased
pay from streaming as more content shifts
away from traditional broadcast
platforms.
They're also
seeking more regulations surrounding how
actors' voices and images are used by AI,
higher contributions to the union's health
plan and curbs on the practice of
self-taped audition.

SAG-AFTRA And AMPTP Agree to Media
Blackout for 2023 Contract
Negotiations
LOS
ANGELES (June 7, 2023) -- Today,
SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP began formal
negotiations for a new contract, and with
the agreement that neither organization
will comment to the media about the
negotiations during the process.
SAG-AFTRA's current
contract with the AMPTP expires on June
30, 2023.
Writers' strike: What's
at stake and how it could disrupt
Hollywood
LOS ANGELES (June 6,
2023) - Like writers, actors have argued
that their compensation has been undercut
by inflation and the shift to streaming,
which pays less in residuals (fees for
re-aired shows) than traditional broadcast
models.
Other contentious
issues include artificial intelligence and
the lack of regulations surrounding how
actors' voices and images are used.
Additionally, the
union wants to bolster contributions to
SAG-AFTRA's health and pension plans and
curb the practice of self-taped auditions,
a trend that accelerated during the
pandemic.
Studios and casting
directors increasingly have required
actors to submit video of themselves
auditioning for roles, forcing them to
take on audition costs that have typically
been the responsibility of productions,
the union has said.
The last time
actors went on strike was in 2000 in a
dispute over their commercials
contract.
A previous actors'
strike against the major film and TV
studios was in 1980.

Members Approve Strike Authorization with

Results Set the Stage for TV/Theatrical
Contracts Negotiations
-
TVIMagazine
LOS
ANGELES (June 5, 2023) -- In a
powerful show of solidarity, SAG-AFTRA
members have voted 97.91% in favor of a
strike authorization ahead of negotiations
of the TV/Theatrical Contracts, with
nearly 65,000 members casting ballots for
a voting percentage of 47.69% of eligible
voters.
The strike
authorization does not mean the union is
calling a strike. SAG-AFTRA begins
negotiations on June 7 with the Alliance
of Motion Picture and Television
Producers. The affirmative vote on the
authorization empowers the union's
National Board to initiate a strike if the
AMPTP won't reach a fair deal with the
union. The current SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical
Contracts expire at midnight on June 30,
2023.
"The strike
authorization votes have been tabulated
and the membership joined their elected
leadership and negotiating committee in
favor of strength and solidarity. I'm
proud of all of you who voted as well as
those who were vocally supportive, even if
unable to vote. Everyone played a part in
this achievement," said SAG-AFTRA
President Fran Drescher. "Together we lock
elbows and in unity we build a new
contract that honors our contributions in
this remarkable industry, reflects the new
digital and streaming business model and
brings ALL our concerns for protections

Carlos Santana (Carlos), Cyndi Lauper (Let
the Canary Sing) and French Montana (For
Khadija, executive produced by Drake and
Diddy), with performances by each artist
after the screening of their respective
documentary. And Megan Thee Stallion will
participate in a live conversation.
The
closing night marks the 30th anniversary
of Robert De Niro's directorial debut with
a screening of a restored version of "A
Bronx Tale," starring De Niro and Chazz
Palminteri, adapted from Palminteri's
one-man play (June 17). The screening is
followed by a conversation with De Niro,
Palminteri, producer Jane Rosenthal, and

June 18, will include a keynote from Diane
von Furstenberg, Founder and Co-Chairwoman
of DVF, in conversation with comedian Seth
Meyers about the origins of her namesake
company, her predictions for the fashion
industry, and her advice for a younger

another keynote conversation, leaders at
two iconic American companies, General
Electric Global Chief Marketing Officer
Linda Boff and General Motors Senior Vice
President of Strategy and Innovation Alan
Wexler will discuss how both
experimentation and data-driven insights
impact their brand narratives, what role
corporate social responsibility plays in
business, and how they leverage the power
of storytelling to inform consumers during
their companies' moments of historic
transformation.
During

Furstenberg has exhibited an expert level
of staying power through savviness and
adaptation. From building a fashion brand
from scratch to pivoting to QVC and
relaunching her company to engaging a new
generation of women in the digital age,
her personal brand and businesses have
flourished, achieving global popularity

has empowered women all over the world and
her charitable donations have reshaped New

115- Pasadena
Playhouse will receive the 2023 Regional
Theatre
Tony
Award

The Pasadena
Playhouse, the State Theatre of
California, is only the second Los Angeles
institution to earn the honor
The prize, which
includes a $25,000 grant, will be
presented at the 76th Tony Awards on June
11 in New York.
Since the Writers
Guild of America agreed to not picket the
event, thus allowing the televised
broadcast to proceed in a revised
form.
The Mark Taper
Forum, was the first L.A. theater to
receive the Regional Theatre Tony in 1977.
Additional Southern California recipients
are the Old Globe in 1984, South Coast
Repertory in 1988 and La Jolla Playhouse
in 1993.
The
Pasadena Play House
doesn't lack the experiences of various
crisis. In 2010 it was close to shutting
down when most of the staff was laid off
and the rreminder of the season cancelle
while filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Rescued by the generous donors, the
theater was back when producing artistic
director Danny Feldman was appointed to
succeed long-term artistic director
Sheldon Epps in 2016.
Founded in 1917 by
Gilmor Brown, a resourceful theater
enthusiast, Pasadena Playhouse began as a
community theater. Early success inspired
more than a thousand community members to
buy the land at 39 S. El Molino Ave., on
which a state-of-the-art theater was
planned. In 1925, the attractive
Spanish Colonial Revival building, now
included in the National Register of
Historic Places, opened its doors
Under Brown's
leadership, the theater drew attention
through its programming ambition
Survival
of the Pasadena Play Playhas has been
touch-and-go but now brought a welcome
prize, The Tony Award.

Nathan B. Stubblefield, the Man History
Overheard
By
Harvey
Geller
In Life's current Bicentennial
issue, radio checks in, at #86 on the hot
"100 Events That Shaped America," 19
buttons behind Bell's telephone.
Erroneously, Life lists Guglielmo Marcon's
dots and dashes as the first wireless
broadcast, a fable echoed by the World
Almanac and Encyclopedia Britannica. It's
a forgivable mumpsimus, since the evidence
offered on the following pages has not,
until now, appeared in any national
publication.
The birth of broadcasting is a bizarre
soap opera saga, a lacrymal legend of
mystery, machination, ephemeral
enshrinement, decline, disillusionment and
disaster. It's denouncement dissolves six
miles north of Murray, Kentucky, in a
two-room shanty constructed of pine and
cornstalks, where radio's uncelebrated
architect is discovered 48 hours after his
death, his records scattered, his
equipment destroyed, his brain partly
eaten by rats. Even local radio fails to
mention his demise. He is Nathan Beverly
Stubblefield, the man history over-heard
and then overlooked.

Cory's Road to
China;
Troy Cory was among the first
international entertainers and the first
American entertainer to perform in the
People's Republic of China, beginning in
1988. In itself a notable
culture-historical feat, in view of
China's closed door policies of the late
70s and well into the 80s. The PRC's
administrative climate in comparison is
much less restrictive now and China's open
door policy enables many entertainers to
introduce themselves to the populace
Chinese audiences.

Back in the 80s, as a
goodwill ambassador representing the
U.S.A., Troy Cory and his back-up dancers
and singers, "The Brooke Sisters," were
the first entertainers from the United
States to appear in a full staged program
in the People's Republic of China during
the Shanghai TV Festival, and televised on
China's National Television (CCTV), viewed
by over 300 million
people.
It was there Cory met Jiang Zemin, then
mayor of Shanghai, and who later became
the 5th President of the People's Republic
of
China.
The '88 Shanghai Concert was the
beginnings of Troy's concert tours in
China for the next two decades. The
concerts, just to name a few, included the
following cities: Shanghai, Beijing,
Anshan, Harbin,
Fuzhou and and Tsingtao

Rice, Hawaiian Tropic founder in 2004
accompanied the Troy Cory Show on a
concert tour through China. -
Rice
died May 19, 2022 at the age of 81 in
Daytona Beach,
Florida
He grew up in the mountains of North
Carolina, and fell in love with the
beaches of Florida on a childhood visit.
He made his home in Daytona Beach, where
he worked as a high school chemistry
teacher and part-time lifeguard.
It was at his part-time job that Rice was
inspired by seeing people all over the
beach using Coppertone suntan lotion. He
became determined to create a unique
competitor, using his chemistry knowledge
to experiment with a suntan lotion
formula, scented with coconut and
fruit.
He famously mixed his first formula in a
garbage can, bottling it at home in his
garage with a $500 loan from his father to
launch his business. He named it Hawaiian
Tropic to evoke an exotic beach
locale.
His experiment was a hit making him a
multi-millionaire, with his Hawaiian
Tropic suncare brand creating sales of
$110 million per year.
Ricewith his Hawaiian Tropic brand became
known for sponsoring beauty pageants and
NASCAR racecars.
In 2004 he accompanied Troy Cory to a
concert tour through China.
After
selling Hawaiian Tropic to Playtex in
2007, Rice returned to the industry in
recent years with the suncare brand Habana
Brisa.

Scott B. Whitenack-Stubblefield Esq.,
great-grand son of wireless telephone
inventor, Nathan B. Stubblefield,
died
- By Troy
Cory
Scott Bryan Whitenack passed away
untimely on September 18, in Los Angeles,
CA.
Scott, aka Scott
Stubblefield, was one of four children
with siblings, Alden, Keith, and
Priscilla. (His brother Keith pre-ceded
him in death at the age of 32). His
parents were Troy Cory Stubblefield, an
entertainer and author and Dorothy
Swafford, owner of a furniture and
antiques retail store. Scott's children
are Steven, David and grand-children,
William, Bruce, Cora and Max, borne to
Steven and Skylark. Scott's
great-grandfather is Nathan B.
Stubblefield, the inventor of Radio, in
1882, and patent holder of the wireless
telephone (1908) and his great-great-great
.... grandparents were - John and
Priscilla Alden who were part of the
pilgrimage who sailed on the Mayflower to
Plymouth Rock from England in
1620.
(The
Stubblefield story is incorporated within
several photographs and denotes of and
about S Scott to show how their personal
ambitions and dreams parallel each other -
both died - before their dreams and
ambitions were
fulfilled)
During
the time he studied for the State Bar,
Scott lived with Josie and myself on our
family estate in Pasadena. He passed the
State Bar the first time and was among
only 33% to do so.
The balance of time was spent doing
cinematography for my TV shows, which he
considered an artistic outlet besides his
major life's work, in the field of law.
After he passed the State Bar he handled
numerous legal cases and ended up working
as an associate lawyer with Melvin Belli
with whom he engaged in several cases and
won a lawsuit that became precedent case
law. Whitenack was committed to his legal
profession for over three
decades.
r
If
you needed legal advice or help with a
motion filing, Scott was there with his
trusty law books. He was very intelligent,
outspoken and an independent thinker.
He
also was a family man, who loved hiking
and scuba diving, a good game of tennis
and enjoyed bringing his sons to Paramount
Ranch for regular family outings and
Father's Day get-togethers.
As
to his love for cinematography he
videotaped additional segments for the
movie "Christmas around the World." Scott
later became my producer and
cinematographer for "To Catch a Dream"
filmed in Europe. The video project
brought him and the production team to
Paris, Venice, Cannes, Munich and
Salzburg. Said footage with perfect
picture-book pans of the Eiffel Tower, the
Seine River, the leaning Tower of Pisa and
the Venice Bridge of Sigh, is a legacy he
left behind for us.
In the early 90s
during the writing of our 4-volume set of
books entitled "the SMART-DAAF Boys" about
the invention of radio and the the
wireless telephone, Scott lent a helpful
hand in giving his legal aspect of his
great-grandfather Nathan Stubblefield's
copyrighted and patented invention. He
also was the co-author of "Bank America,
the Tortfeasor."

Scott
as a teenager with John Wayne
at LA Herald-Express columnist Harrison
Carroll's Cinema Reporting Prize press
conference.
His
favorite poem is found on a card he
prepared for one of my Father's Days
titled "The Force That Through The Green
Fuse Drives The Flower."
He
leaves behind his father, Troy
Cory-Stubblefield, his mother Dorothy
Steele, sister Priscilla Stubblefield
Cory, brother and sister-in-law Alden and
Sara Stubblefield, step mother Josie
Cory-Stubblefield, sons David and Steven,
daughter-in law Skylar, and
great-grandchildren, William, Bruce, Cora
and Max; Nephew
Ryan White, and niece Jenny Wharton. His
brother Keith pre-ceded him in death at
the age of 32.
