Oscar Isaac in
Guillermo Del Toro's
'Frankenstein'
Guillermo
Del Toro's 'Frankenstein' Monster movie
receives 15-Minute
Ovation
-
TVI
Magazine
VENICE,
Italy - August 27, 2Oscar and Golden Lion
winner Guillermo Del Toro unveiled his
long-in-the-works Frankenstein at
the Venice Film Festival. Playing to a
very enthusiastic crowd, the monster movie
was greeted by a 15-minute
ovation.
Del Toro has
inspired the Lido before, winning the
festival's top prize, the Golden Lion,
with 2017's The Shape of Water,
which ultimately went on to sweep up four
Oscars, including Best Picture and
Director.
In the film,
Oscar Isaac stars as Dr. Victor
Frankenstein, a brilliant but egocentric
scientist who brings a creature (Jacob
Elordi) to life in a monstrous experiment
that leads to the undoing of both the
creator and his tragic
creation.
Ever since
he was a kid Guillermo del Toro has
dreamed of making two movies. The first
was accomplished in 2022 with Guillermo
del Toro's Pinocchio, which took
the Animated Feature Oscar. And now the
second, Frankenstein,, a new
adaptation of the 1818 literary classic
novel by Mary Shelley that the director
has been fascinated by ever since seeing
Universal's 1931 film version with Boris
Karloff.
As he has
proven in Pan's Labyrinth, Crimson
Peak, Pinocchio and certainly his Best
Picture and Best Director Oscar winner
The Shape of Water, it is hard to
imagine any other filmmaker who could
bring the enigmatic spirit better to this
genre than Del Toro. It is simply because
of his long-time love for monsters and
even though Frankenstein has been a horror
staple for nearly a century in cinema, del
Toro here turns it into a fascinating and
thoughtful tale on what it means to be a
human, and who is really the
monster?

LOS
ANGELES - (August
5, 2025) The Los Angeles County Museum of
Art (LACMA) has received a donation of
remarkable artworks from the Pearlman
Collection, including masterpieces by
Vincent van Gogh and Édouard Manet
representing one of the most distinguished
acquisitions in the museum's recent
history.
The addition of
these masterpieces reinforces LACMA's
position as one of the premier art
institutions on the West Coast and
significantly enhances its collection of
Impressionist and Post-Impressionist
works.
Among the most
notable works are paintings that showcase
the distinctive styles and techniques of
these master artists, as some of the
finest examples of 19th-century European
art.
The Van Gogh
painting in the collection demonstrates
the artist's characteristic bold brushwork
and vibrant colors that made him one of
the most influential contributors in
Post-Impressionist
art.
The Manet piece
represents the artist's innovative bold
use of light and shadow that helped pave
the way for the Impressionist movement
that would follow representing the
transition from Realism to
Impressionism.
Art historians
and critics have praised the donation,
recognizing its importance not only for
LACMA but for the broader cultural
landscape of Los Angeles. The gift

Can
AI Models Learn to Elude Human Control?
Expert Says
'No'
By Akli
Adjaoute
SAN FRANCISCO,
Calif., July 19, 2025 -- Citing concerns
that the recent Wall Street Journal
article "AI Is Learning to Escape Human
Control" could distort the public's
understanding of artificial intelligence
and fuel panic, leading AI expert Akli
Adjaoute is speaking
out.
"AI remains a
set of statistical models governed by
human-designed algorithms, data and
constraints. It cannot 'learn to escape'
anything," Adjaoute said. "These are
computer programs, not sentient
entities."
Adjaoute has
more than three decades of experience in
the development and deployment of
mission-critical AI systems. He distills
his educational and professional expertise
in his latest book, "Inside AI," in which
he provides a clear-headed, jargon-free
overview of the fascinating world of AI,
including a chapter devoted to answering a
question in the minds of many: "Can
machines match or surpass human
creativity?"
From those new
to the field to seasoned enthusiasts,
Adjaoute aims to equip readers with a
comprehensive understanding of what AI
truly is and what it can and cannot
achieve.
"There are many
books written on AI, but few that actually
give readers a framework for how to think
about AI, and its transformational impact
on every person in the world," said Karen
Webster, CEO at PYMNTS. "This is that
book. It is powerful in its simplicity,
and admirable for its
accessibility."
Within the
pages of Inside AI, readers will
gain practical insights, learning how
to:
· Understand
diverse AI techniques and
methodologies
·
Draw lessons from both successful and
failed AI applications
·
Identify the capabilities and limitations
of AI systems
·
Grasp the successful and unsuccessful uses
of AI in business
·
Recognize areas where human cognition
still surpasses AI
·
Dispel common myths, such as AI's threat
to jobs and civilization
·
Effectively manage AI
projects
"As we
progress, we'll also address ethical
questions surrounding bias, fairness,
privacy and accountability," Adjaoute
added. "Drawing from my three decades of
experience in developing and deploying
mission-critical AI systems, I will
outline the characteristics that, in my
perspective, will define the next
generation of AI platforms."

SAG-AFTRA
National Board Overwhelmingly Approves
Network Television Code
Deal
Members
will vote to ratify the contract; Board
recommends a "yes"
vote
LOS ANGELES,
July 2 - The SAG-AFTRA National Board met
Saturday in a one-day videoconference
plenary and overwhelmingly voted to
approve the tentative agreement reached
for the 2025 Network Television Code. The
agreement, which covers work on a wide
range of live and recorded programs
including soap operas, talk shows, variety
shows, award shows and sports, will now be
sent to the membership for
ratification.
Key gains in
the agreement include an increase of 1
percentage point to the benefit plan
contribution rate and a reallocation of
existing contributions that will together
result in effectively raising the AFTRA
Retirement Fund contribution rate by 3.3
percentage points, adding needed resources
to the Fund. The agreement would also
provide a general wage increase of 3.5% in
year one, 3% in year two, and 3% in year
three, (a compounded increase of 9.8% over
the term), with additional targeted
increases in specific performer
categories. Wage increases are subject to
a possible strategic reallocation to the
AFTRA Retirement Fund as needed to
strengthen members' retirement benefits.
High Budget non-dramatic entertainment
programs made for SVOD will also now be
subject to the scale minimums of the
Network Code.
SAG-AFTRA
said: "A large number of meaningful gains
were made in many performer categories,
including expanded streaming coverage for
sports broadcasters for certain sporting
events, improved protections around young
performers, better terms for dancers and
singers, protections for ensuring hair and
makeup equity, and earlier access to
disability accommodations." Background
actors, promo announcers, stand-ins, and
reporters also received improved
terms.
Importantly,
the new contract also requires the use of
intimacy coordinators for scenes involving
nudity or simulated sex and advance
notification to background performers when
nudity or simulated sex will be required.
The agreement also adds a commitment to
adopt future artificial intelligence terms
secured in the upcoming 2026 TV/Theatrical
Agreement negotiations.
SAG-AFTRA
President Fran Drescher said, "This is a
meaningful and future-facing contract that
raises the bar across the board. This
contract reflects the union's deep
commitment to dignity, fairness, and
progress in the face of increasingly
adverse times. I'm incredibly proud of the
work that went into this deal, and
wholeheartedly approve of what it
represents for our members working under
the Network Television Code."
SAG-AFTRA
National Executive Director & Chief
Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland said,
"This agreement delivers meaningful wage
increases, expanded protections through
the use of intimacy coordinators and
guaranteed access to disability
accommodations and A.I. safeguards, all
while securing vital gains in workplace
safety and retirement contributions. It
also adds additional needed resources to
the AFTRA Retirement Fund. I'm especially
grateful for the Network Television Code
Negotiating Committee, led by Chair Keri
Tombazian. Their insight and dedication
helped ensure this agreement meets the
evolving needs of our members in the
ever-changing media landscape. I also
commend our extraordinary negotiating
staff and especially lead negotiator Ray
Rodriguez for their efforts in achieving
this forward-thinking deal."
The current
contracts remain in effect during the
member ratification
process.
Member
informational meetings are being scheduled
and additional details will be available
at sagaftra.org/netcode2025 in
the coming days.
Postcards
will be mailed on Wednesday, July 30 to
eligible SAG-AFTRA members and they will
have until 5 p.m. PDT on Wednesday, August
20, 2025 to cast their vote on
ratification.

Bill Modernizes and
Strengthens California's Film and
Television Jobs
Program
LOS ANGELES
(July 3, 2025) -- Screen Actors
Guild-American Federation of Television
and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) applauds the
passage of California AB 1138. Championed
by Assemblymember Rick Zbur and state Sen.
Ben Allen, the bill modernizes
California's Film and Television Tax
Credit Program with an aim to restore jobs
in the state.
Among other
things, the bill expands the types of
projects that can apply to the tax credit
program to include half-hour series,
animation and large-scale competition
series. It also raises the per-production
cap to $120 million, enhances incentives
for filming outside the Los Angeles area
and triples funding for independent
films.
AB 1138's
passage comes just one day after Gov.
Gavin Newsom signed the state budget bill
expanding the Film and Television Jobs
Program, increasing annual incentive
funding to $750 million beginning July 7
through 2031.
SAG-AFTRA
President Fran Drescher said, "AB 1138 and
Gov. Newsom's expansion of funding are
enormous victories -- not just for
entertainment workers, but for the entire
California economy. A prosperous film and
television industry fuels tourism, retail,
real estate and small businesses across
the state!

CineMerit
Award for Swedish actor Stellan
Skarsgård at 42nd Munich
International Film
Festival
Arriving
on short notice:
Stellan
Skarsgård was honored by the Munich
International Film Festival for his
achievements in the cinematic arts as he
presents his latest film,
"Sentimental
Value."
The
Swedish actor has enthralled international
audiences in high-grossing blockbusters
such as "Pirates of the Caribbean" and
"Dune" as well as in acclaimed art house
films such as "Melancholia" and
"Dogville". His latest collaborative work
with director Joachim Trier, a tragicomic
portrait of a father-daughter relationship
titled "Sentimental Value", earned the
Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival
this year and will now have its German
premiere in
Munich.
"Stellan
Skarsgård is an extraordinary artist
who captivates, challenges, and inspires
audiences around the world. Every role of
his demonstrates his versatility as an
actor, whether it's in the biggest
blockbuster or a low-key art house drama.
Conveying the most complex thought
processes through his facial expressions,
he has made a deep impression on
generations of viewers.

winner 2025 - Foto: Megan

Stellan
Skarsgård is one of the most
versatile actors of his generation - in
art house cinema as well as Hollywood
blockbusters. At age 16, he was noticed
for his role in the Swedish TV series
"Bombi Bitt och jag". His international
breakthrough followed in 1990 in "The Hunt
for Red October" alongside Sean Connery.
Skarsgård
once said that he was not someone who
sought out major roles, but rather thought
of himself as a "bassline" that guided the
melody performed by others. Nevertheless,
it was a leading role that brought him
fame: as Jan Nyman in Lars von Trier's
"Breaking the Waves", he began to work
closely with the Danish director, who cast
him in nearly all of his films, including
"Dogville" and "Melancholia". At the same
time, Skarsgård also took mainstream
cinema by storm, starring in "Pirates of
the Caribbean", "Mamma Mia!", "The
Avengers", and most recently in "Dune" and
the Star Wars series "Andor". Regardless
of the genre, what matters to him is "that
the forcefulness of expression suits the
tone of the film." In "Sentimental Value",
which is having its German premiere at the
Munich International Film Festival, he
exhibits this inimitable mixture of
intensity and authenticity once
again.

Stirring
tales and dazzling worlds of
make-believe
This year,
the variety in the CineKindl section
includes eight feature films, one series,
and five short films. All of these deal
with the lives of children and teenagers,
without shying away from the painful
aspects. An example of this is the
American indie film "Omaha", in in which
two children are affected by a
life-changing decision their father makes.
This first feature film by director Cole
Webley was acclaimed at the renowned
Sundance Film Festival. The stop-motion
film "Tales from the Magic Garden"
(directed by David Súkup et al.) is
also about family relationships. Following
the death of their grandmother, Tom,
Suzanne, and Derek bring joy back into
their grandfather's house by telling
imaginative stories. Pure joie de vivre is
also found in the colorful animated film
"Hola Frida!" (directed by Karine
Vézina and André Kadi).
Imaginative imagery takes us into the mind
of Frida Kahlo, a famous artist who in
childhood was long confined to bed but did
not despair. Eleven-year-old Bobby O'Brien
also faces the adversities of life in
"Spilt Milk" (directed by Brian Durnin).
Setting out to find his missing brother,
he winds up on a daring
adventure.

Gillian Anderson in

Gillian
Anderson to receive the CineMerit Award at
the 42nd Munich International Film
Festival
Munich - May
29, 2025 - The Munich International Film
Festival announced the recipient of this
year's CineMerit Award. US actress Gillian
Anderson will receive this honor for her
achievements in the art of film. The Award
Ceremony will be held during a gala
evening at the Deutsches Theater that will
include the German premiere of her latest
film, "The Salt Path."
"Gillian
Anderson's incredible versatility never
ceases to amaze us: an FBI agent, a sex
therapist, an Iron Lady. "The Salt Path,"
adapted from a best-selling novel, reveals
a whole new side to her, which we will all
get to explore at the Deutsches Theater.
By honoring Gillian Anderson, we are
saluting a person who embodies much more
than an impressive career. She represents
strong womanhood and smart decisions, and
is a model of principles and
integrity."
Julia
Weigl and Christoph Gröner - The
festival's artistic
directors
Gillian
Anderson's breakthrough came in the 1990s,
when she took the role of astute,
assertive FBI Agent Dana Scully in the US
television series "The X-Files." As her
career progressed, she appeared in a
variety of motion pictures, but also
stayed in television. From 2012 to 2015,
she gave a powerful performance as
Hannibal Lecter's psychiatrist Dr. Bedelia
Du Maurier in the NBC series "Hannibal."
In 2020, her portrayal of the Iron Lady,
Margaret Thatcher, in "The Crown" earned
her several awards, including an Emmy and
a Golden Globe.
Viewers
became most familiar with Anderson through
"Sex Education" (2019-2023) for her role
as the free-spirited sex therapist, Dr.
Jean Milburn. Personal development is also
the theme of her current film, "The Salt
Path" (directed by Marianne Elliott,
screenplay by Rebecca Lenkiewicz) - a
drama about a married couple who lose
everything and defy fate by choosing to
follow a difficult path.
Gillian
Anderson's artistic achievements have
garnered widespread recognition, including
two Emmy Awards, two Golden Globes, and
three nominations for the prestigious
Laurence Olivier Award.
A
multitalented artist and committed
feminist
Alongside
her acting career, Gillian Anderson is
also a successful author, producer, and
voice artist. She compiled the book "Want:
Sexual Fantasies by Anonymous", produced
the television series "The Fall", and
narrated documentaries such as "The
Widowmaker." She was the first woman to
direct and write an episode of "The
X-Files."
Gillian
Anderson says that feminism is part of her
DNA. Her portrayal of savvy and
self-reliant Agent Scully in "The X-Files"
inspired an entire generation of young
women to pursue careers in science (the
"Scully effect.") Her books give a
platform to women and destigmatize such
topics as women's sexual desires. Anderson
is also actively committed to social
justice, supporting organizations such as
Women for Women International that enable
women to live better lives.

Promoting
a 'Multipolar' World at the 28th St.
Petersburg International Economic
Forum
Putin says
Russian recession must not happen 'under
any
circumstances'
-
TVI
Magazine
St.
St.
Peterburg, (June 20, 2025) -
Once dubbed the
"Russian Davos," the annual St. Petersburg
International Economic Forum (SPIEF) once
attracted top Western business leaders and
policymakers, serving as a platform for
major deals like the Nord Stream gas
pipeline.
This year western
officials and investors steered clear of
this year's St. Petersburg International
Economic Forum that for decades has been
Russia's premier event for attracting
foreign capital
.
The
Kremlin earlier also banned journalists
from countries that Russia regards as
"unfriendly" from covering the proceedings
that began Wednesday and continue through
Saturday. Moscow has imposed that
designation on scores of countries
including the United States, Canada,
European Union members and Australia in
connection with sanctions imposed over the
fighting in
Ukraine.
Since 2022, the
forum's lineup has reflected Moscow's
pivot toward countries in Asia and Africa
amid its isolation from the
West.
Some
20,000 guests from 140 countries were
expected to attend the forum in person and
online, the Kremlin said this
week.
Among
the around 50 countries sending government
officials to SPIEF 2025 were China,
Vietnam, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the Central
African Republic and Burkina Faso. Taliban
officials also arrived from Afghanistan on
Wednesday.
Vladimir
Putin delivered the keynote address during
the forum's plenary session
of the 28th St Petersburg
International Economic
Forum.
In a written
message to SPIEF guests earlier this week,
Putin said the 2025 forum would focus on
"technology and digital transformation as
key drivers of leadership in the modern
world," along with issues like
demographics, science and education, labor
productivity and social
protection.
Putin told
attendees, including government ministers
and central bankers, at the St Petersburg
International Economic Forum Moscow needs
'balanced growth.' Russia's economy must
not slide into recession, after economists
warned for months of a slowdown in
growth.
He touted the
rising economic influence of the BRICS
group of countries and Russia's pivot
toward non-Western markets, using the
plenary session of the annual St.
Petersburg International Economic Forum
(SPIEF) to promote what he described as a
"restructuring" of Russia's
economy.
"BRICS
makes up 40% of the global economy," the
Kremlin leader said during his
address. "And it's obvious that this
share will only continue to grow. As they
say, that's a medical fact. This growth
will primarily come from the dynamic
countries of the Global
South."
Putin has long
sought to highlight BRICS - a bloc of
countries originally comprising Brazil,
Russia, India, China and South Africa - as
a geopolitical counterweight to Western
power and influence. The group, which now
includes countries like Indonesia and the
United Arab Emirates, was also a major
theme during the president's address at
last year's economic
forum.
Before Putin took
the stage on Friday, the audience was
shown a dramatic video presentation
tracing the history of global economic
growth. The present day was depicted with
the United States as a declining financial
hegemon, symbolized by an apocalyptic
image of the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles
engulfed in flames. In contrast, the BRICS
group was portrayed as a new, more
equitable driver of global growth in the
21st century that some specialists and
experts were "pointing to the risks of
stagnation and even a
recession."
The plenary sessio
was moderated by Lebanese journalist Nadim
Koteich and featured a panel of political
leaders that, besides Putin, included
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto,
Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang,
Bahraini royal Nasser bin Hamad Al-Khalifa
and South African Deputy President Paul
Mashatile.
Koteich introduced
Putin by saying the panel's diversity
demonstrated that Russia is not isolated
internationally, but instead showed "how
multipolar the world has
become.
Russian
presidential advisor Anton Kobyakov also
announced that Saudi Arabia will be the
guest country at SPIEF
2026.

Memorial
Day
TVI's
Gary Sunkin poses with Flag at Forest
Lawn, Los Angeles
What
we now refer to as Memorial Day began as
Decoration Day just after the Civil War in
1868. It was established as a day to
remember the war dead by decorating their
graves with flowers. The North and The
South originally observed Decoration Day
on different days until the mid-20th
century when the last Monday of the month
was chosen to honor all Americans who died
while serving in the military.
On
Memorial Day, the flag of the United
States is raised briskly to the top of the
staff and then solemnly lowered to the
half-staff position, where it remains only
until noon. It is then raised to
full-staff for the remainder of the
day.
In
2000, Congress passed the National Moment
of Remembrance Act asking people to stop
and remember at 3:00 pm.

Celebrate
unofficial beginning of summer with
Memorial Day but always remember the
sacrifices of our service members in the

the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade or TWO
floats in the Rose Bowl Parade!
.....
That means that
every dollar that's contributed by a
generous American like you makes a
difference for this important
event.
.....
But I want to
reiterate that American Veterans Center
does not take ANY federal funding for this
event. It is funded entirely by private
citizens like you who want to honor those
who have sacrificed so much for our
country.
.....
Your support of the
American Veterans Center not only helps
the Parade, but also supports great
programs like:
Record hundreds of oral histories of
veterans from World War II to Today before
we lose these stories forever.
Hold
our National Youth Summit which allows
young students a chance to hear first-hand
from veterans from WWII, Korea, and
Vietnam.
Produce veteran focused T.V. documentaries
and specials that remind Americans the
price of our freedom.
Support
the National Memorial Day
Parade
.....
And no matter how
much you can give to this important cause,
I want to ask something additional of
you.
.....
On Memorial Day --
not just this momentous year of military
milestones, but every year - please join
me in honoring those who made the ultimate
sacrifice for our
freedoms.
.....
Come to the
National Memorial Day Parade in
Washington, D.C. Visit a local veterans'
cemetery. Send a note to a family of the
fallen. Or simply take a quiet moment to
think about the men and women who gave
their lives to defend OUR
country.
.....
I believe that
while we can never do enough to express
our gratitude to our defenders, veterans,
and first responders, we can always do a
little
more.
Friend,
thank you for your support of America's
heroes, and please -- if you're able, make
a gift to fund the National Memorial Day
Parade right now during its 20th
anniversary.
.....
Sincerely,
Gary

"It

Cannes
awards
Iranian
dissident filmmaker Jafar Panahi's
thriller "It Was Just an Accident" won the
Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival,
handing the festival's top prize to a
director who had been banned from leaving
Iran for more than 15 years. It has been
22 years after Panahi last attended the
film festival (though some of his movies
have screened in the intervening time.)
Has spent most of his filmmaking career in
the crosshairs of Iran's authoritarian
Islamic Republic government - including
more than a decade of multiple detentions,
prison sentences, house arrests and
filmmaking and travel bans.
Cate
Blanchett presented the award to Panahi,
who three years ago was imprisoned in Iran
before going on a hunger strike. The crowd
rose in a thunderous standing ovation for
the filmmaker.
This year's
Palme was presented by Cate Blanchett and
European Film Academy president Juliette
Binoche, who also led the Main Competition
jury. She was joined by Halle Berry,
Dieudo Hamadi, Hong Sang-soo, Payal
Kapadia, Carlos Reygadas, Alba Rohrwacher,
Leïla Slimani, and Jeremy
Strong.

Springtime in
Cannes
By Josie
Cory
A h h h . . . Spring in Cannes
where
mild breezes blow as the warm
Mediterranean sun smiles over this
beautiful spot on the Cote d'Azur. There
you can feel a timeless sensuality,
assuaging a nostalgia for the
Mediterranean which since as far back as
the 16th century has been a constant theme
in many a Northern European's life.
"Now give us
lands where the olives grow," Cried the
North to the South, "Where the sun with a
golden mouth can blow blue bubbles of
grapes down the vineyard row!" Cried the
North to the South. (to borrow a phrase
from the English writer Elizabeth Barret
Browning).
"Cannes,"
wrote Charles Lentheric, the indispensable
and erudite historian of maritime
Provence, in 1880, "is a town where you
feel no need to work," and "where the
inhabitants were not interested in the
world that lay beyond their shady gardens,
or the sheltered balconies of their
hotels."
Now the
world has come to Cannes, chosen it to be
their Mediterranean queen for its annual
events, and when you stroll along the
Croisette on some warm April day you will
hardly share Mr. Lenteric's sentiments.
Voila! Cannes! It has emerged truly
cosmopolitan.

CANNES remains the jewel among festival
towns
Cannes is host to the annual Festival de
Cannes, as well as MIDEM, MIP TV and MICOM
(Marché
International des Programmes de
Communication,
owned and organized
by Reed MIDEM).
It's been 39 years
since TVI under Cory's ownership first
covered MIPCOM in 1987.
Although Cannes has remained the
quintessential market place, despite
enormous changes in the cinema, television
and social media landscape, it was more
casual back in 1987, of course. You could
hang out with studio executives without
much planning or go see a performer in his
hotel room and spend the afternoon in
discussing the latest video. There was no
"French day," the interview period now set
aside so French journalists can get their
stories before everyone else.
And many things were simpler. Though it
sounds paradoxical, even getting stories
back to my TVI Magazine -- it was less
time-consuming in that pre-computer age.
The festival headquarters had a room where
telex operators who spoke not a word of
English -- took your typewritten copy,
grunted something unintelligible and
transmitted it to the U.S. without a
hitch.

Leo
XIV elected as the first American
Pope
-
(TVI
Magazine)
Rome, May 9, 2025
-- Pope Leo XIV celebrates his first Mass
today, Friday after his historic election
as the first North American pope, meeting
with the cardinals who chose him to lead
the Catholic Church and follow in Pope
Francis'
footsteps.
The
Chicago-born Augustinian missionary Robert
Prevost surprised the world Thursday when
he emerged on the loggia of St. Peter's
Basilica, as the first American
Pope.
Born in Chicago in
1955 to parents of Spanish and
Franco-Italian descent, he grew up in a
parish on Chicago's South side in suburban
Dolton. Prevost served as an altar boy and
was ordained as a priest in 1982. Although
he moved to Peru three years later he
returned regularly to the US to serve as a
pastor and a prior in his home
city.
Since arriving in
Rome, Prevost had kept a low public
profile but Francis tapped him to be head
of the Vatican's powerful Dicastery for
Bishops, which vets bishop nominations
around the
world.
Vatican watchers
said Prevost's decision to name himself
Leo was particularly significant,
suggesting continuity with some of
Francis' chief concerns: Brother Leo was
the 13th century friar who was a great
companion to St. Francis of Assisi, the
late pope's namesake. Leo has also cited
one of Francis' key priorities of making
the Catholic Church more attentive to lay
people and
inclusive.
The First Words
Pope Leo XIV spoke to the faithful from
the Basilica of Saint Peter after his
election were - 'Peace be with
you!'
Dearest brothers
and sisters, this was the first greeting
of the risen Christ, the good shepherd who
gave His life for the flock of God. I,
too, would like this greeting of peace to
enter your hearts, to reach your families
and all people, wherever they are; and all
the peoples, and all the earth: Peace be
with
you

Pope
Francis (1936-2025)
Pope
Francis has passed
away
- By Josie Cory - TVI
Magazine
ROME
- April 21, 2025 - Pope Francis died on
Easter Monday at the age of 88 in Rome's
Vatican City. The Argentine pontiff,
history's first from Latin America,
presided over the Catholic Church for more
than 12 years, since March 13, 2013.
He was born Jorge
Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires,
Argentina, on 17 December 1936 - the
eldest of five children. His parents had
fled their native Italy to escape the
evils of fascism.
The death of
Francis was announced by Cardinal Kevin
Farrell, the Irish-born Vatican
camerlengo, a position that will be
decisive in the coming weeks as he takes
charge of the administration of the Holy
See until a new pope is elected.
"At 7:35 this
morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis,
returned to the home of the Father,"
Farrell said. "His entire life was
dedicated to the service of the Lord and
of his Church."
The pontiff died in
the Vatican's Domus Santa Marta, where he
returned after his long hospitalization.
Pope Francis who suffered from chronic
lung disease and had part of one lung
removed as a young man, was admitted to
Gemelli hospital in Rome on Feb. 14, 2025,
for a respiratory crisis that developed
into double pneumonia.
Francis made his
final public appearance as head of the
Catholic Church on Easter Sunday, though
he had delegated the celebration of the
Easter Mass to another cardinal.
He blessed a crowd
of faithful from the loggia of St. Peter's
Basilica. "Brothers and sisters, Happy
Easter," he said from the same loggia
where Jorge Mario Bergoglio was introduced
to the world as the 266th pope.
Pope Frances met
briefly with U.S. Vice President JD
Vance.
"I was happy to see
him yesterday, though he was obviously
very ill," Vance, who converted to
Catholicism in 2019, said on Monday during
a visit to India.
As Pope and
spiritual leader he made great efforts to
heal the thousand-year rift with the
Eastern Orthodox Church. For the first
time since the Great Schism of 1054, the
Patriarch of Constantinople attended the
installation of a new Bishop of Rome.
Pope Francis also
worked with Anglicans, Lutherans and
Methodists and persuaded the Israeli and
Palestinian presidents to join him to pray
for peace by bringing together the Israeli
President, Shimon Peres, and his
Palestinian counterpart, Mahmoud Abbas, to
pray for peace in 2014.
He will be
remembered for his social and economic
issues, efforts to modernise the church,
his advocacy for the marginalized and
environmental causes and was known for his
great humility and also humor.
Pope Francis'
Funeral will take place Saturday, April
26th at 10:00 a.m. and laying in state for
public viewing in St. Peter's Basilica
starting Wednesday ahead of Saturday's
funeral.

Hollywood stars who
snubbed the Academy Awards
There have only been
three people that refused the awards,
actors George C. Scott and Marlon Brandon
and screen writer Dudly Nichols.
Not everyone in Hollywood enjoys the gala
event. Over the years, a handful of
Hollywood A-listers have refused to attend
the ceremony, and some who've sidestepped
the show did so when they were up for
awards of their own.
From Katharine

stars who snubbed the Oscars.

A
Child in Berlin: The Poignant Story of
Heidi Posnien and Her Mother Durig the
Fall of
Germany
A Survivor
of Berlin's WWII Atrocities Embodies
Childhood Resilience
OGDEN, Utah, March 15, 2025 -- Heidi
Posnien, now 88, enjoys a peaceful life in
a farmhouse overlooking a lake -- worlds
apart from her childhood in Nazi-occupied
Germany, where she and her mother survived
unimaginable circumstances. Despite the
immense hardships she has endured in her
lifetime, including outliving her husband
and children, Posnien chooses gratitude
for simple abundance, freedom and
safety.
Posnien shared her
strikingly clear memories with
professional biographer Rhonda Lauritzen,
recalling in vivid detail the fear and
uncertainty that permeated Nazi-infested
Berlin during World War II; memories of
her mother, Käthe, a rising star in
Germany's opera scene; and her remarkable
survival in a bombed-out apartment during
the final weeks of the war. She lived
alone at just 9 years old.

The Octogenerian - ATAS a glittering
dream
-
By
Syd
Cassyd
Permission was given by Syd Cassyd to
Josie Cory, TVI for publishing.
Hollywood, CA -- The glittering dreams of
the world for a new culture and perhaps
world peace through television and radio
turned to ashes when Hitler used all media
to destroy the dreams and bodies of more
than 30 million persons.
When
in 1946 seven industryites in
communications joined me in founding the
"first generation" of the Academy of
Television Arts and Sciences, we didn't
foresee that in 43 years we would get the
recognition that the "third generation" TV
Academy has today,
We
weren't naïve, for since Jan. 6,
1884, the first TV system had already been
patented. For those 62 years world leaders
had already visualized the impact of the
moving image of television on society. The
problems in America was not when, but who
would control the new technology.

John

L-R: John Dickerson,
Maurice DuBois and Margaret
Brennan
Nora O'Donnell,
longtime CBS anchor will bid farewell to
viewers on January 23, 2025. She will move
into an expanded role as a CBS News senior
correspondent focusing on longform
reporting and interviews across CBS and
Paramount, including primetime specials,
on "CBS Sunday Morning," "60 Minutes,"
Paramount+ and more.
"Norah's new role
will give her the opportunity to
contribute across CBS and Paramount,
allowing us to see more of the
groundbreaking stories and interviews that
have been the hallmark of her career. Her
superpower lies in her ability to secure
and deliver big interviews and newsmaking
stories that set the news cycle and
capture the cultural zeitgeist.
Nora
O'Donnell
After the
presidential election, award-winning
journalists John Dickerson and Maurice
DuBois will anchor the "CBS Evening News"
as the show returns to the CBS Broadcast
Center in New York.
Margaret Brennan,
CBS News' chief foreign affairs
correspondent and moderator of "Face the
Nation with Margaret Brennan," will
regularly lead coverage from Washington,
D.C., when news breaks on the political
and foreign affairs fronts.
Lonnie Quinn is being named chief
weathercaster for the show and will
deliver the latest weather reporting and
forecasts from the new AR/VR studio in New
York.
McMahon continued:
"With Norah's decision, we began
reimagining and redesigning the Evening

been in its ensemble of journalists, both
in front of and behind the camera, and our
goal with John, Maurice, Margaret and
Lonnie at the Evening News is to elevate
the best in their fields every night for
our viewers. In addition to this ensemble
team, we look forward to welcoming '60
Minutes' correspondents to file for the
'CBS Evening News' when they have news to
break; for decades this was routine, so it
will be again."
Lonnie
Quinn, Chief Weathercaster

Evening News" duties, Dickerson will
continue anchoring on CBS News 24/7, CBS
News' free national streaming service, and
serving as CBS News' chief political

Overheard
By
Harvey
Geller
In Life's current Bicentennial
issue, radio checks in, at #86 on the hot
"100 Events That Shaped America," 19
buttons behind Bell's telephone.
Erroneously, Life lists Guglielmo Marcon's
dots and dashes as the first wireless
broadcast, a fable echoed by the World
Almanac and Encyclopedia Britannica. It's
a forgivable mumpsimus, since the evidence
offered on the following pages has not,
until now, appeared in any national
publication.
The birth of broadcasting is a bizarre
soap opera saga, a lacrymal legend of
mystery, machination, ephemeral
enshrinement, decline, disillusionment and
disaster. It's denouncement dissolves six
miles north of Murray, Kentucky, in a
two-room shanty constructed of pine and
cornstalks, where radio's uncelebrated
architect is discovered 48 hours after his
death, his records scattered, his
equipment destroyed, his brain partly
eaten by rats. Even local radio fails to
mention his demise. He is Nathan Beverly
Stubblefield, the man history over-heard
and then overlooked.

Troy Cory was among the first

1988. In itself a notable
culture-historical feat, in view of
China's closed door policies of the late
70s and well into the 80s. The PRC's
administrative climate in comparison is
much less restrictive now and China's open
door policy enables many entertainers to

Rice
died May 19, 2022 at the age of 81 in
Daytona Beach,
Florida
He grew up in the mountains of North
Carolina, and fell in love with the
beaches of Florida on a childhood visit.
He made his home in Daytona Beach, where
he worked as a high school chemistry
teacher and part-time lifeguard.
It was at his part-time job that Rice was
inspired by seeing people all over the
beach using Coppertone suntan lotion. He
became determined to create a unique
competitor, using his chemistry knowledge
to experiment with a suntan lotion
formula, scented with coconut and
fruit.
He famously mixed his first formula in a
garbage can, bottling it at home in his
garage with a $500 loan from his father to
launch his business. He named it Hawaiian
Tropic to evoke an exotic beach
locale.
His experiment was a hit making him a
multi-millionaire, with his Hawaiian
Tropic suncare brand creating sales of
$110 million per year.
Ricewith his Hawaiian Tropic brand became
known for sponsoring beauty pageants and
NASCAR racecars.
In 2004 he accompanied Troy Cory to a

After
selling Hawaiian Tropic to Playtex in
2007, Rice returned to the industry in

Scott B. Whitenack-Stubblefield Esq.,
great-grand son of wireless telephone
inventor, Nathan B. Stubblefield,
died
- By Troy
Cory
Scott Bryan Whitenack passed away
untimely on September 18, in Los Angeles,
CA.
Scott, aka Scott
Stubblefield, was one of four children
with siblings, Alden, Keith, and
Priscilla. (His brother Keith pre-ceded
him in death at the age of 32). His
parents were Troy Cory Stubblefield, an
entertainer and author and Dorothy
Swafford, owner of a furniture and
antiques retail store. Scott's children
are Steven, David and grand-children,
William, Bruce, Cora and Max, borne to
Steven and Skylark. Scott's
great-grandfather is Nathan B.
Stubblefield, the inventor of Radio, in
1882, and patent holder of the wireless
telephone (1908) and his great-great-great
.... grandparents were - John and
Priscilla Alden who were part of the
pilgrimage who sailed on the Mayflower to
Plymouth Rock from England in
1620.
(The
Stubblefield story is incorporated within
several photographs and denotes of and
about S Scott to show how their personal
ambitions and dreams parallel each other -
both died - before their dreams and
ambitions were
fulfilled)
During
the time he studied for the State Bar,
Scott lived with Josie and myself on our
family estate in Pasadena. He passed the
State Bar the first time and was among
only 33% to do so.
The balance of time was spent doing
cinematography for my TV shows, which he
considered an artistic outlet besides his
major life's work, in the field of law.
After he passed the State Bar he handled
numerous legal cases and ended up working
as an associate lawyer with Melvin Belli
with whom he engaged in several cases and
won a lawsuit that became precedent case
law. Whitenack was committed to his legal
profession for over three
decades.
r
If
you needed legal advice or help with a
motion filing, Scott was there with his
trusty law books. He was very intelligent,
outspoken and an independent thinker.
He
also was a family man, who loved hiking
and scuba diving, a good game of tennis
and enjoyed bringing his sons to Paramount
Ranch for regular family outings and
Father's Day get-togethers.
As
to his love for cinematography he
videotaped additional segments for the
movie "Christmas around the World." Scott
later became my producer and
cinematographer for "To Catch a Dream"
filmed in Europe. The video project
brought him and the production team to
Paris, Venice, Cannes, Munich and
Salzburg. Said footage with perfect
picture-book pans of the Eiffel Tower, the
Seine River, the leaning Tower of Pisa and
the Venice Bridge of Sigh, is a legacy he
left behind for us.
In the early 90s
during the writing of our 4-volume set of
books entitled "the SMART-DAAF Boys" about
