2011- Emmys TV-Show Winners - Was it A TV-ShowBiz
Event, or was it a MovieActor Event - minus the box
office?
The September 18th - 2011 event had everyone
wondering . . . were they auditioning future
Academy award winners at Sunday's 63rd Annual
Primetime Emmy Awards presentation? Or was the show
a preview of next year's Academy of Television Arts
& Sciences Oscar Event.
TV show greats all the way from "The Dave Letterman
Show," and "Jay Leno" to "60 Minutes," and "20/20"
didn't exactly make the winners list, did
they?
In fact, primetime TV-shows and their television
stars were not even mentioned. The
Reasons?
Perhaps it has to do with the sheer physicality of
the busines . . . no Movie actors, no Box office,
no ticket sales . . . then no TV show
awards! Television programing -- seems to be all about movie look-alikes, and a
"Blacklist." Movie Actors & Actresses vs
TV Performers? . . . "Why pay . . . when you

101-114 Actor Cliff Robinson Dies - 88. Blacklisted
By Industry For
Whistleblowing..
It was in 1977, that TV star Cliff
Robertson's Show Biz Career took an unexpected
twist. It was right after he received an IRS
form for "miscellaneous income" that indicated that
Columbia Pictures had paid him $10,000 the previous
year.
Robertson, however, hadn't done any work for
Columbia that year and had not received $10,000
from the studio.
After asking his accountant to look into it,
Robertson learned that a check for $10,000 had been
made out to him and had been cashed at a bank in
Beverly Hills. The endorsed check, bearing
Robertson's forged signature, had been processed
and paid out in American Express travelers' checks
to the president of Columbia Studios, David
Begelman.
After consulting his attorney, Robertson notified
the local police. But after months of inactivity,
he took the advice of Arizona congressman Morris K.
Udall, whom he had supported in the 1976 Democratic
presidential primaries, and contacted the FBI.
"I
was simply looking out for No. 1," Robertson told
People magazine in 1983.
"I
wasn't trying to be Don Quixote. If I hadn't done
what the law required, which was to give evidence
to the authorities, I would have been a party to a
crime."
The
ensuing Begelman embezzlement scandal, which came
to symbolize Hollywood corruption, was chronicled
in David McClintick's 1982 bestseller "Indecent
Exposure: A True Story of Hollywood and Wall
Street."
In
March 1978, Begelman was charged with grand theft
and three counts of forgery: for forging the names
of Robertson, director Martin Ritt and restaurateur
Pierre Groleau on checks written in the amounts of
$10,000, $5,000 and $25,000 respectively.
Three months later, Begelman was fined $5,000 and
placed on three years' probation. The judge, who
directed Begelman to continue the psychiatric
treatment he had recently begun, also accepted
Begelman's offer to make a documentary on the
dangers of "angel dust" (PCP) as a public
service.
Begelman, whose grand-theft conviction was reduced
from a felony to a misdemeanor in 1979, was hired
later that year to head MGM's motion picture
division, and he later became a producer. He
committed suicide in 1995.
For
his part in exposing the embezzlement, Robertson
said, he was blackballed in Hollywood for 3 1/2
years.
"I
broke the unwritten commandment: Thou shalt never
confront a major mogul on corruption," he told The
Times in 1998. "Suddenly, the phone stopped
ringing."
Robertson said his Hollywood exile ended in 1981
when director Douglas Trumbull cast him in a role
in "Brainstorm," a thriller released in 1983
starring Christopher Walken and Natalie Wood.
Robertson later appeared with Jacqueline Bisset and
Rob Lowe in the comedy-drama "Class," played Hugh
Hefner in Bob Fosse's "Star 80" and joined the cast
of TV's "Falcon Crest."
He
also launched a long run as the commercial
spokesman for AT&T.
The
son of the heir to a ranching fortune, he was born
Clifford Parker Robertson III on Sept. 9, 1923, in
Los Angeles.

101-IcahnQuitsMGMdeal.
Carl Icahn ends fight to seize control of MGM.
Under the agreement,
the corporate raider will sell 44.2 million shares
and both sides will drop pending litigation against
each other. Carl Icahn has given up on his long and
costly attempt to capture a Hollywood
lion. Ending a three-year battle that included
a trio of lawsuits and tender offers, and nearly
$25 million in legal costs for the shareholders of
the Santa Monica studio, the corporate raider has
reached a settlement with Lions Gate Entertainment
Corp. to sell almost all of his 33% stake in the
company. Analysts said the agreement was positive
for Lions Gate because it would allow management to
focus resources and investors' attention on the
company's core
business. "It wouldn't have been my first choice
to see them lay out capital for this, but it's
probably the best conclusion we could have hoped
for, given the situation," said Marla Backer, an
analyst at Hudson Square
Research. Doug Creutz, a vice president at Cowen
Group, said the deal probably would drag down Lions
Gate's stock in the short
term. "Why would an investor buy at $7.50 if
he can get it from Icahn at $7?" he asked. "Once
that is done, the stock can go back to trading on
its
fundamentals." With Icahn out of the way, the studio
will focus on drawing investors' attention to its
upcoming film slate, led by the first adaptation of
the bestselling novels in the "Hunger Games" series
that will be released in March. The studio is
hoping to spawn a new franchise with four movies
based on the books as it seeks to turn around its
underperforming run of movies that most recently
included the money-losing flop "Conan the
Barbarian.

July 9, 2011. The Problem? Amazon launched Appstore
for Android on March 22, one day after Apple filed
its suit against the online retail giant alleging
trademark infringement over the name of the
storefront, which sells apps for Google's Android
operating system found on smartphones and
tablets.
But . . .

Apple has
been denied a preliminary injunction that would
have halted Amazon.com's use of the term "appstore"
in a ruling by an Oakland federal
judge.
U.S.
District Judge Phyllis Hamilton ruled Wednesday
that she didn't agree with Amazon's argument that
the names "app store" and "appstore" are generic
and can be used by anybody, but she said Apple had
failed to show "a likelihood of confusion" for
customers who use the Apple App Store and the
Amazon Appstore for Android, according to a Reuters
report.
Hamilton has
set a trial date in the dispute between the two
companies for October 2012, reported Reuters.

$125M
Settlement.
+
June 31st Week: Wells Fargo & Co. agreed to
pay $125 million to investors in its
mortgage-backed securities who alleged that before
the Great Recession hit, they were misled about how
much equity the borrowers had in their
homes.
'WellsFargo']The
proposed settlement, filed Wednesday in federal
court in San Jose, ended consolidated lawsuits
filed by the pension funds of Alameda County,
Detroit, New Orleans, Guam, the Louisiana sheriffs
and other plaintiffs.
At issue
were mortgage-backed securities -- financial
instruments derived from a pool of mortgages --
whose value depended on borrowers' payments on
loans made at the peak of the housing bubble in
2006 and 2007.
Certain
other claims over mortgage securities filed by
Charles Schwab Corp. and the Federal Home Loan
Banks of Chicago and Indianapolis are excluded from
the class, Wells Fargo has said in regulatory
filings.
The
litigation named as defendants Wells Fargo and
about 20 trusts holding mortgages backing $8
billion in securities, along with various Wall
Street banks and credit-rating agencies involved in
issuing the mortgage
bonds.
The proposed
settlement, which still requires judicial approval,
did not include any admission of wrongdoing by
Wells Fargo. A spokesman for the San Francisco bank
said the intent was to avoid the expense and risk
of further litigation.

California Sales Taxes & AMAZON.
+/ Will the new
California tax collection requirement Effect Your
Monthly Phone Bill? YES, it might HAPPEN. Part of
California budget-related legislation -- is
expected to raise an estimated $317 million a year
in new state and local government revenue.
Other states currently are
considering similar sales tax collection bills.
California's new law was
drafted to circumvent a 1992 U.S. Supreme Court
ruling that sellers can't be forced to collect
sales taxes unless they have a physical presence in
the state.
The new statute would
establish that presence in two ways: when sellers
pay commissions to other Internet sites in
California, known as affiliates, that refer buyers;
and when sellers have a related company operating
in the state.
One affiliate, Ken Rockwell
of San Diego, the owner of a 12-year-old
photography website, said he planned to move out of
state.
"Will it be Las Vegas or
Scottsdale or Ensenada?" he said. "It's a question
of where, not if."
California tells online
retailers to start collecting sales taxes from
customers
Beginning Friday, July 1st,
2011, Amazon.com and other large out-of-state
retailers, like AT&T, Verizon, and Spring
utilizing California Area Code -- will be required
to collect sales taxes on purchases that their
California customers make online.

106-TVCopyrightLawTargeted"Bad"
-- An arcane but critical copyright law is under
attack by a key government agency. -
The U.S. Copyright Office, which advises Congress
on copyright issues, is proposing that lawmakers
phase out the cable and satellite statutory
licenses in the Copyright Act, calling it "an
artifact of an earlier era." -
The so-called compulsory license, established in
1976, allows cable and satellite operators to
distribute broadcast television signals in return
for paying a one-size-fits-all copyright fee to the
Copyright Royalty Tribunal (CRT). The CRT then
distributes the fees to copyright holders such as
Hollywood studios and sports leagues and local
television stations. Each year, the CRT collects
tens of millions of dollars in fees that it
distributes to rights holders. -
For example, if a Los Angeles TV station is carried
by a multichannel video programming distributor
(MVPD) outside the Southern California area, that
MVPD pays a fee to the CRT. If the distant signal
portion of the act was gone, the MVPD would go to
the individual suppliers of the programing to
negotiate an agreement, a much more costly and
tedious process. -
One company watching this closely will be Tribune,
the parent of the Los Angeles Times and owner of
WGN, a local TV station that is carried nationally
by MVPDs and hence would be most affected by any
change to the distant signal part of the
act. -
The Copyright Office suggested that after the
Distant Signal rules were gutted, Congress could
then consider how to gradually eliminate the local
rules.

The German T-Mobile - AT&T Deal . The
AT&T Inc. announced Sunday it would
buy T-Mobile USA in a cash and stock deal
worth $39 billion.
The
German T-Mobile - AT&T Deal would
combine two of the largest U.S. wireless
providers and build a telecommunications
behemoth that would tower over Verizon
Wireless, the other leading cellular
network.
The merger
would combine AT&T's 95.5 million
wireless subscribers with another 33.7
million from T-Mobile, a division of the
German communications conglomerate
Deutsche Telekom. With close to 130
million subscribers on a wireless system
that would combine the vast national
networks of both companies, the resulting
union would far outstrip Verizon and its
94.1 million customers.
AT&T
suggested that increased competition
resulting from the deal could benefit
consumers but did not explicitly say the
plan would mean lower prices for its
customers.

the 106
The German T-Mobile - AT&T Deal .
"This
transaction represents a major commitment
to strengthen and expand critical
infrastructure for our nation's future,"
AT&T Chief Executive Randall
Stephenson said in a statement.
AT&T
highlighted the efficiency savings it
would garner from a merger, given that
both companies use similar cellular
technology -- as opposed to a different
model used by Verizon -- and both are
planning to take similar steps toward the
next generation of faster 4G networks.
Part of
AT&T's gambit has to do with the steep
rise in the use of data services by
consumers with sophisticated smart
phones. With many more users
adopting video-ready, Internet-connected
phones such as Apple's iPhone and the many
Google-powered Android devices, demand for
wireless bandwidth among consumers is
quickly increasing, and the industry has
been struggling to stay ahead of that
demand.
AT&T
said data traffic on its wireless network
had grown 8,000% over the last four
years.
"Because
AT&T has led the U.S. in smart phones,
tablets and e-readers -- and as a result,
mobile broadband -- it requires additional
spectrum before new spectrum will become
available."
Critics
quickly warned about the perils of
conglomeration, saying federal regulators
should scrutinize the deal carefully lest
it actually lead to less market
flexibility.
"Don't
believe the hype: There is nothing about
having less competition that will benefit
wireless consumers," said S. Derek Turner,
research director at media industry
watchdog Free Press, in a statement.
"A market
this concentrated -- where the top four
companies already control 90% of the
business, and two of them want to merge --
means nothing but higher prices and fewer
choices, as the newly engorged AT&T
and Verizon exert even more control over
the wireless Internet." /

VoIP Inc., sued Google Inc., alleging
misappropriation of trade secrets
involving patented "click to call"
technology.
In late 2006 Google introduced "click to
call" which enables a person to place a
telephone call over the Internet by
clicking on a link, according to the
complaint filed I in the New York Supreme
Court.
In September 2005, Los Angeles-based VoIP
unit VoiceOne Communications agreed to
provide "click to call" technology to
Google, VoIP said.
In January 2007, Google said it was
terminating the agreement, citing a
purported unauthorized disclosure that
identified Google as a VoiceOne Customer,
according to the lawsuit.
A similar suit brought in July 2009 in Los
Angeles Superior Court was dismissed
without prejudice within five months.
This isn't the first
communications-related suit brought
against the search engine company, says
the NBS Wireless Telephone Org. In June
2010, Frontier Communications, a provider
of phone, Internet and satellite TV
services, sued over Google Voice, a
service that allows users to use one
number to connect to their multiple
phones. Frontier accused Google of patent
infringement on its inventions. That case
is still pendingi n the District Court of

BofA appointed on

The new unit will oversee "Problem Loans"
in a bid to sort out its ongoing
foreclosure, and Title issues, becoming
the first large U.S. bank to do so,
especially after the Country-Wide

The new unit
creates a seventh major division at the
bank reporting directly to Chief Executive
Brian Moynihan, an indication that the
largest U.S. mortgage servicer is
attempting to be more aggressive in
resolving its problem loan portfolio.
Analysts said the
move is a signal that major U.S. mortgage
lenders have not yet turned the corner on
dealing with the problem home loans on
their books.
Last fall, when the
FTC's Red Flag, anti-theft prevention act
came into play, the bank temporarily
suspended foreclosures after critics
alleged the industry cut corners on
foreclosure paperwork and used so-called
robo-signers, employees who signed
thousands of foreclosure notices without
reviewing the documents. CLICK

102 Larry Page, the CEO of Google
Reorganizes its Top
Ranks
SAN FRANCISCO, April 1011 -- Larry Page,
who returned as Google's chief executive
officer (CEO) this 17 week of 2011, has
completed a major reorganization of the
management team as part of his attempt to
streamline decision-making at the Internet
giant, U.S. media reported on Friday.
Page, the 38-year-old co-founder of Google
with Sergy Brin, has been trying to run
the company in the spirit Google had as a
start-up between 1998 and 2001, when he
was its founding CEO before handing the
role to Eric Schmidt, who now assumes the
role of executive chairman.
Page promoted six executives in
charge of some of Google's most important
divisions, who will report to the new CEO
directly, The Wall Street Journal said in
a report.
Four executives were promoted to senior
vice presidents, including YouTube head
Salar Kamangar, mobile-device software
Android chief Andy Rubin, Chrome Web
browser and operating system head Sundar
Pichai and Vic Gundotra, who is in charge
of Google's social-networking
initiatives.
Susan Wojcicki and Alan Eustace, two
current senior vice presidents, will
become heads of ads and Web search, a
person familiar with the matter was quoted
as saying.
Google has said that the change of CEO was
aimed at streamlining decision-making and
creating clearer lines of responsibility
and accountability at the top of the
company.
With the latest management shuffle after
Page took charge of Google's day-to-day
operations, the promoted executives will
be able to act more autonomously and won't
have to turn to the company's powerful
operating committee on every decision,
according to a report by the Los Angeles
Times.
The reorganization puts Page firmly in
charge of Google and its performance in
much the same way Steve Jobs runs Apple,
the newspaper noted.

Legends
of Poker - More Then Vegas / By
Pete
Allman
The game of poker is truly a game of skill
and in todays society, thanks to
television coverage and all those
celebrities indulging in the game, it is a
household word.
Legend has it, that poker dates back
to 900 BC in China when Mu-Tsung was said
to have played a form of '' domino
cards''. It has also been said
that poker evovled in the 1400's as
a European game. However, Poker
in America started in Mississippi on
riverboats and was a compliment
to three card Monti , which was dealt
with a 20 card deck that only
contained aces, kings, queens, jacks
and10's.
The big step in the evolution of poker was
in Neveda where it was declared
illegal in 1910.
In California the Attorney
General declared it a game of skill,
thus anti-gambling laws couldn't stop the
masses from playing poker. Then,
in 1931 poker was declared
a legal game in Nevada.
What's not to like with a chef from Italy,
a diversed staff, and an all new
State-of-the-Art Grand Poker
Ballroom. It's an impressive and
exciting place to visit. A place where
younever know who's playing poker or for
that matter Pai Chi.

| China's limits on entertainment imports
violate free trade practices, WTO
rules
The
ruling is seen as a win for U.S.
industries working to distribute films,
music and books in China. Still, trade
experts say not to expect big
changes.
Workers
make repairs to the display at a Beijing
movie theater near a model of a character
from the "Transformers" films. Wednesday's
World Trade Organization ruling could help
open the Chinese market to more U.S.
movies. (Ng Han Guan / Associated Press)
The
decision was seen as one of the toughest
against China by the WTO since it joined
the trade body in 2001 and agreed to give
equal treatment for domestic and foreign
companies. And it comes as the U.S.
continues to face a massive trade deficit
with China -- $103 billion through June of
this year -- an issue that the Obama
administration has yet to tackle head on
but which looms large in the coming
months. August
13, 2009 / Washington. The LAtimes
reported that . . . in deciding that China
broke international trade rules by
restricting imports of movies, music and
books, the World Trade Organization handed
the U.S. a victory in a contentious issue
that has long rankled purveyors of
copyrighted media products.
But
it doesn't mean Hollywood or Silicon
Valley will be cashing in any time soon.
The
ruling, issued Wednesday by a WTO panel in
Geneva, called on China to stop requiring
foreign media suppliers to go through the
costly process of distributing goods
through Chinese state-owned entities. It
also urged China to allow foreign
companies to sell music over the Internet,
a potentially huge opportunity for
companies such as Apple Inc., with its
iTunes. China has the largest number of
Internet users, but piracy online and in
the streets is rampant.
Although
China has complied with past WTO rulings
against it, analysts say Beijing could
appeal the latest decision, which could
drag out the case for many more months.
The complaint was first brought by the
U.S. in spring
2007.
